Thrilling book by this popular and talented striker
It's such a nice and refreshing change to read a book on the subject of football(soccer to Americans and Canadians out there) that's not all to do with high-flying clubs, rich players and tycoons.This is about a 'real' footballer.Whereas most people are happy to read about the great lifestyle players like Beckham have, I'm much more interested in the nitty-gritty life of the footballer, the one that maybe reaches the Premiership(highest league) one day, but on the whole he starts at the bottom, works hard and toils in the lower divisions.These are the real heroes, the players that fans adore, no matter if they are supremely talented or not, these are the players who try and give everything for their club, and one of these such men is Steve Claridge.Read more

A VERY good adventure book!!
I've read this book at least 10 times and every time I enjoy it just as much as before!This book has a lot of adventure and some suspense.Each time you read it you find something new and interesting.The book has some interesting facts because Sam (one of the kids) writes reports for school and you get to read them.All around I think this is one of the best books ... A huge disappointment
You might think it would be hard for a former manager of the England soccer team (and a good one at that), a former England player as well as one of the best club managers of his generation to produce a boring book about his exploits, but Bobby Robson has done just that. This has all the hallmarks of a work which was slapped down onto paper with no planning at all. We jerk around from his playing career (we never learn how he became a player) to management of Ipswich, then a backwater club in England. He wins a major European soccer title (something little short of astonishing) but gives us no idea how he did it, how he managed to inspire a collection of largely obscure players to great heights. Instead we have a boring list of "We beat this side, and then that side, and then another side" and before we know it he's in Holland, then Spain and then a chapter later he's back in England, always whining on about money. The man must be a millionaire many times over but we're treated to endless paragraphs about how he fought for the money he felt he was entitled to. In short, this is an awful book. ... Read more

The Mavericks: Why English Football went wrong
An interesting look at the development of hard-tackling, work ethic footballin England and how it marginilized the truly gifted players. The author points to Ramsey's '66 Cup team as the beginning of the problem when Jimmy Greaves was excluded from the side. The author tells the story of Charlie George at Arsenal, Peter Osborne at Chelsea, Rodney Marsh at QPR and so on and why these players were rarely selected to play for England in internationals. England's total lack of sucess in the 70's can be chalked up to Don Revie and Joe Mercer's refusal to select these unique footballers. His traces the career of each man as they were tranfered to the smaller clubs and labelled as "lazy" and "undisiplined".
