5-0 out of 5 stars Wondering how the business aspects of the game have evolved?
Tracy Sumner's Karsten's Way is the fascinating biography of Karsten Solheim who was a visionary pioneer in the design of golf clubs, the founder of PING, and for whom The Solheim Cup was named. Karsten's influence and ideas were to profoundly influence both golf and the golf equipment business. If you've ever held a golf club in your hands, or wondered how the business aspects of the game have evolved, this Karsten's Way will prove to be as inspiring as it is informative.

4-0 out of 5 stars Hear the PING??
A good book to read when you feel like things aren't going your way....there's a reason why things happen in people's lives (i.e. GOD)...after i read the book i now know why i felt PING golf equipment is the best...never sacrifice what you believe in

5-0 out of 5 stars I sincerely commend this book.
Friendship and respect are two of the most precious assets in a man's life.Karsten Solheim enjoyed both in large measures throughout the golf world. We shared a very special relationship, owed to my now having played Ping clubs for 20 years.I sincerely commend this book, "Karsten's Way," for it is above all, the story of a far-sighted pioneer, and an essential record of how he revolutionized golf with his exceptional passions. ... Whether or not Sam Snead sits atop the leader board as golf's greatest is no gimme, but there's no question about his ability to communicate. His storytelling was always as much a part of his game as his smooth, melodic swing, and he tells wonderful stories in Read more

Editorial Review

Given the sweep of two-time Masters' champion Ben Crenshaw's career, there's an irony to the fact that he'll be better remembered for captaining the1999 Ryder Cup team to its cardiac comeback than for anything he accomplishedbetween the ropes. It's an irony not lost on Crenshaw. He devotes a full fourthof his graceful memoir, Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Saccharine
As one of Ben's biggest fans, I so looked forward to this book. How did it feel to have so much adulation so young, the frustration of his many near misses, his personal ups and downs, and insights into his peers ?
3-0 out of 5 stars A missed opportunity
As a lifelong golfer and Ben Crenshaw admirer, I waited in anticipation for Crenshaw's story, both of his development in the game as well as his version of the 1999 Ryder Cup. After finishing "A Feel for the Game," my first question is: did co-writer Melanie Hauser do ANYTHING on this book? There is no writing style; it's as though Crenshaw simply rambled into a tape recorder and Texas golf writer Hauser merely did the transcribing. The end result is a cliche-ridden effort where friends and associates are described with little more than banal generalities, such as Crenshaw's portrait of former Augusta National Chairman Bill Lane as "a very nice man." Believe me, that's as much texture as you'll get when trying to learn about some of the most powerful and fascinating people in golf.3-0 out of 5 stars Hey here's a bandwagon lets jump on it
It is a great pity that someone who I have no doubt has the highest integrity and honour should feel the need to jump on the Brookline Bandwagon.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful biography of two great golf legends
Beautifully written and factual.
4-0 out of 5 stars Know what you're getting!
This is a serious work by a professor of history. It ISN'T filled with anecdotes ("And then Walter said to Bobby ..."), descriptions of shots ("Bobby then drilled a quail-high mashie between the towering pines ..."), gossip, swing analyses, etc.If this is what you're looking for, you'll be sorely disappointed. It's fairly dry -- make that extremely dry -- but is well-researched (hundreds of endnotes) and will be fascinating for anyone with an interest in the history of American golf. The format is a dual biography of Jones and Hagen in which their respective careers are compared and contrasted to give the reader an understanding of the rise of American golf in the era 1900-1930.The two men were so different in virtually every respect that this approach is very effective. Those who think golf began with Palmer, Nicklaus or Woods will gain an appreciation of what "gods" Jones and Hagen really were during the era in which they played.Hagen especially tends to be overlooked, but this book is an important reminder that he was one of the true greats of the game in addition to being one of its two or three all-time "characters."I didn't have the feeling that the author was particularly knowledgeable or avid about the game -- instead, this is a work of historical research, just as you or I might produce a history of badminton if we were willing to spend the time to do the research. When you're done, you won't "know" Bobby Jones as well as you'd know him if you read his and O. B. Keeler's own voluminous writings, and you won't be a fount of anecdotes, but you will have a solid grasp of Jones' and Hagen's place in history, how golf became an American obsession and how American golf eclipsed British golf. All of this for the price of a couple of dozen Top-Flite x-outs.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great read
After reading this book, I found that Dr. Stephen Lowe really brings to life the lives of Bobby Jones and Walter Hagen. This book is written in a descriptive oriented reading. Before reading this book, I found that golf was not much of a sport. I found that there is truly a rich history in golf that I have come to respect and want to learn more about. I applaud Dr. Lowe and hope to read future writings. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars A good read
This is an exceptionally well written enjoyable book to read on a rainy afternoon when you can't get out to the course. The only downer were periodic eruptions of Hallberg's boomer arrogance. Also disappointing was the fact he told all his golf partners that he was writing a book and he was going to put them in it!

1-0 out of 5 stars Birdie on descriptions of golf, double bogey on the rest.
I looked so forward to reading this book after it was recommended by afriend, also an avid links lover. However, getting past the authors liberalgenre and his views towards certain people of the "christian"persuasion left me disappointed. As a Christian, I wish I could have readthe book without the typical liberal diatribe of"religion-bashing" and received more inspiration of how one canlearn of life through the study and playing of the game. Too much of aslice to the left side of center for me.Bill, just stick to the vivid andwell laid out descriptions of the course and leave the anti-christianprosletizing to someone else (that is, if you want to sell books.) Can Iget my money back?

5-0 out of 5 stars insightful, evocative writing
This is my favorite golf book.Well, it's not really a "golf book" per se -- obviously, it revolves around a golf trip, but Hallberg's descriptions of the value of family, friends, and the kindnessof strangers are priceless.Contrary to what other reviewers have said, Ithink it's obvious that Hallberg cares deeply about his family -- abortinghis trip would have done nothing to cure their health problems; but itwould have deprived us of a beautiful, sensitive book.Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Insightful, accurate, and quite readable
This is an approach to golf books that I would really like to see more of. The author has a very keen perception and attention to detail when it comes to describing the best that Scottish golf has to offer, but so have many others that have come before him. The wonderful part about this book is that Kilfara also opens up a part of his soul so that the reader can try to relate to or understand him as a person while he describes this journey. Many times have I read a book about sports and wondered about personal details of the author that determine his perception of what he is desacribing. Kilfara lets us in to a part of his psyche and should be roundly applauded for it. Anyone that did not enjoy this book I believe does not like, understand or appreciate golf or is plainly jealous of the wonderful courses the author has been able to play.

3-0 out of 5 stars Hey Mr. Author!
OK, parts of the this book were really enjoyable. The author's portrayal of the town of St. Andrews and the characters that roam its ancient streets and the oldtimers who haunt the Old Course are priceless. Also, several of the courses the author describes (Machrie and Dornoch come to mind) make me want to book a trip right away.5-0 out of 5 stars A Must Read
Kilfara really captures the essence of the game in a must read for all avid golfers.Kilfara's narrative tells an enchanting story of golf, personal growth and romance all while on an academic sojourn from Harvard. The prose is imminently readable and will capture the hearts and minds of most golfers and non-golfers alike.I wholeheartedly recommend this endearing book to all who might need a trip to the old world. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars When True Heroes Appear Forgotten -- Then What?
I was simply window shopping at Amazon.com and came upon one of my favorite books of all time. To my dismay, it appears, well, frankly as if we all abandoned this monumentally courageous man. Because of Casey Martin's decision (not an easy one) to take on The PGA in federal court (and won after a long legal battle) for the right to use a golf cart during competition (due to an extremely painful and disabling degenerative condition since birth), he paved the way for countless differently-abled to be included in our society from sea to shining sea. I know of no one personally who ever stood against a fierce firestorm-of-a- legal-battle (while trying to compete in golf) to show not only what is right but what a real man is. I still remember you and your story from this book, Casey Martin! And if America forgets the real heroes like yourself, then where in heck are we going? Oh right...the video store or movie theatre to see someone playing-the-hero, who is just a name-on-a-stage. ... Read more

Includes interviews with Senior andWomen's tour golfers as well. Interesting introduction by Byron Nelson, ofall people.
