2-0 out of 5 stars The chosen One
The Chosen one was a very interesting book . But it only told about Tiger Wood's career and his life when he was older , getting into golf tornments and training . But otherwise it is a very good book if you were just wanting to know how he won tournments and becomeing famous . Also it told about how Tiger Woods was ridiculed by his race and how young he was , which was a problem towards his career due to reporters and newspapers.Tiger was also known as one of the multicultrual icons . Also what was interesting to people is Tiger was guided by his father rather than being pushed on.

4-0 out of 5 stars This book is O.K
This book was very true about the life of Tiger Woods. It keep me reading page after page. The author was a sports writer so he knew what he was writing aout and it was great.Tiger Woods is the best golfer.

2-0 out of 5 stars Has some gems
A collection of few chapters with the authors own ideas and thoughts thrown in too liberally, it is more of the author's view of Tiger Woods. Does not qualify as an biography, just a bunch of articles. Does has a few gems which make it worthwhile. ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars I get it.....
The game of golf is racist and sexist.I get it.In fact, I got it after the first twenty times Sounes whines about it.

5-0 out of 5 stars A good overview of a socially stratified pastime
Tartly written, well researched, and consistently entertaining, I can't believe this book ranks so low on Amazon's list right now. I've been a casual golf fan for a very long time and played golf as a kid on the course Tiger Woods grew up on (Meadowlark, in Huntington Beach), and I found Sounes' book well worth the read. As a Tiger "fan" myself, being almost a hometown boy, I found the book to have a great deal of verisimilitude and accuracy. In fact, I have a lot less respect for Tiger now than I did before. Then again, I can't imagine what it's like to have such celebrity thrust upon you before you've even had a chance to mature as a person.
5-0 out of 5 stars A page-turning history of golf that stays with you
The story of men's professional golf since the 1950s is laid out in an easy-to-read, highly enjoyable style. The chapters are well-crafted, and lively and fun. The stories of the classic major tournaments are re-told in a fresh way, based on new interviews. But the heart of the book is what we don't usually learn about the likes of Palmer, Nicklaus and Woods (also Gary Player, Lee Trevino, Byron Nelson et al): the business deals, the politics, the personal lives. And some of these golfing heroes have feet of clay. Criticism is well-balanced and fair-minded, however, unless you happen to think pro' golf already has an open-handed attitude to women and ethnic minorities. Sounes obviously has a low opinion of the golf establishment, bodies like the PGA and PGA of America. But at the same time there is real affection here for the great tournaments and genuine appreciation of big characters like Arnie Palmer who are, whatever their faults, interesting men who have lived rich lives. Now I know exactly how rich. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars HIS BEGINNING
Sports Illustrated put together a collection of some of its articles chronicling the rise of Tiger Woods from the years 1992 through 1996. Writers such as James Garrity, Jaime Diaz, Tim Rosafore, Rick Reilly, William Reed, and Gary Sickle share their special insight on this young golf phenomena. Everyone has their say in this three act drama.Read more

Editorial Review

The opening sentences of Donegan's delightful romp through the European golf world sets its tone: "The first thing to understand about caddying is it's not brain surgery. It's more complicated than that," and the next couple of hundred pages prove the point. Put a hapless golf fanatic like Donegan, a journalist by trade, on the bag of another hapless golf fanatic-- British pro Ross Drummond, who would probably be more successful in another line of work--and the results, no matter how hard they try to play it straight, are as wayward as a duck hook off the tee. Funnier than writer Michael Bamberger's trenchant recounting of his exploits carrying Peter Teravainen's bag in Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Waste of money
I thought I was going to read about golf..Wrong..I am not interested to hear Mr Donegan's opinion's on world leaders.. Unfortunately I purchased it at an airport so can't return it and get my money back..

5-0 out of 5 stars Hilarious, insightful, and even touching
This is a very intelligent and witty book that all of us who understand golf's struggles must surely appreciate. But beyond a golfer's perspective, this should also be enjoyed as a story about any passion in life that proves to be extremely challenging or unattainable, and the humor of brushing aside all obstacles and pressing forward no matter how ridiculous the circumstances become.
3-0 out of 5 stars There are better stories on golf out there....
but this one is readable if only because it is a take on the Euro tour.It takes you to golfing venues and places that others dont.If you want a book about a player you know or courses and tournaments you are familiar with, then this is not your book. That, however, is the redeeming factor of this book.It does get dry because of that though, as it does the usual, painful breakdown of all of Ross Drummond's (Ross who?...exactly)shots and putts. This of course it what drops its rating down. A book like this on Tiger might rate 5 stars as we would all like to hear the inside scoop from his caddy. Where it does excel is with Donegan's wit, humor and exploits. When their relationship starts to sour Donegan takes more of an interest in his social life, and in places like Morocco you know it will get interesting.Chapter seven on his experience in Rabat ispretty dang funny. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars it makes you wish tiger had players he could duel with.
I am a 31 year old former college golfer. I am a history buff of all sports but I really didn't know my golf history as well as i should. This book really helped me. The book details Palmer, Player, Trevino, Nicklaus, Watson and a host of others. You also learn the detailed history of the British Open or as they call it "The Open" The detail of how the British cadies talk is alone worthy as a reason to read this. If you are a golf fan this is a 5 star book if you are not a golf fan I would not recommend it. Although I wouldn't want to dress like they did in the 1970's ; this book made you wish that you did grow up then.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great read!
Even the most casual sports fan will love this book.Like Laura Hillenbrand did in Sea Biscuit, Corcoran breathes life into an epic moment in sports history, the duel between Jack Nicklaus and Tom Watson in the 1977 British Open. The writing makes you feel like you're right there during the twists and turns of the tournament, getting to peek inside the heads of the athletes during the most pressure-filled moments. And the story is terrific... two golfers at the top of their game, battling a course that none of their competitors could handle. This book was really top-notch.

5-0 out of 5 stars Best I've Ever Read on Golf
The storytelling and the quality of writing in this book are excellent. You won't want it to end. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars I could not put the book down. James was me.
As James and his Dad take a final trip to Scotland, he and his wonderful Dad get to know each other and the love for each other, which had always been there becomes very personal. Golf is the game each loves and becomesthe expression of their love for each other. They communicate and connectfor long or short drives, it doesn't matter. The game of golf is therespoken and unspoken language. Opti, Jame's dad, has a few months to live, and his pain is numbed by playing and being near his son. They truelyconnect and James reads his dads words and remembers every detail of hislife. The man is certainly teeing of with Bobby Jones, Julius Boros and OldTom Morris. Waiting and watching are Love, Strange, Watson and a host ofothers who have shown the same respect for the game. Every golfer who wastaught the game as a child by a parent (my Mother was my Opti) will relateand cry thru the last chapter, just as I did.

5-0 out of 5 stars One of the most touching stories I've ever heard.
Truly an outstanding story wonderfully told.A love story about Dad's and son's that anyone with a heart will enjoy. 5-0 out of 5 stars Poignant and relevant to father-son relationships and golf
Even though I'd read the book, I recently bought the audio for a new long commute.James Dobson's reading of his own words is a poignant description of the journey he and his father make towards the end of their relationship. As with many aspects of life, golf and this journey reflect upon each other. The goals on the course mirror those in life; balance, harmony, relaxation while trying to achieve important goals.James Dobson narrates this journey, on and off the golf course, with compassion and humor. It has helped me in my thoughts about both golf and my father.. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Great photo essays
This is a wonderful book for those interested in a photographic journal of Jones' life. Many images are rare and this book is a treat to read.Jones' career record is also recorded, which, as strange as it may sound, is hard to come by in one book, as most focus only on his major championships.Matthew has done a great job capturing the man and the player and all I can say is that in my 30 years of golf and research into golf's history, you won't find a better single volume that graphically portrays Jones. His return to St. Andrews in 1936 is particularly poignant.

5-0 out of 5 stars Fun book
An excellent book and the perfect gift for a golfer.Anyone that appreciates the history of golf will love it.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good content, a little disorganized.
This book includes anything and everything on Jones, his family, O.B. Keeler etc.And the book itself is divided into several sections for the various stages of Jones' life and career. There is a great deal ofinteresting material presented within. My only criticism is that thebook is frankly a little tough to follow at times. The writing seems tomeander in a stream-of-consciousness manner, somewhat like a "what Idid this year" letter from an aged relative. The photographs (whichare the main reason many will buy this book) are dispersed without much ofa theme, and there is also some repetition of the photos. Many photosinclude no captions, leaving you to wonder what the significance might be. The random arrangement of the photos almost give one the impression you areleafing through a scrap book.Don't get me wrong. There is a lot to behad here, it's just not the most polished piece of work you're going to runinto. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Touching Story of a Real Legend
As avid golfers, my husband and I looked forward to reading this book -- and what a treat it was. We've never met Cotton and never been to Bethlemen PA, and certainly never to the hallowed halls of Saucon. But there is really something in the soul of the man, Ross "Cotton" Young, that is both inspiring and intriguing.
5-0 out of 5 stars The intriguing tale of one man's seventy-seven year career as a golf caddie at Saucon Valley Country Club
Life Long Looper: The Story Of A Caddie Legend by Cindy O'Krepki is the intriguing tale of one man's seventy-seven year career as a golf caddie at Saucon Valley Country Club in Bethlehem Pennsylvania. Readers will be enthralled with the caddie's stories of comedy, drama, and intimate relationships between golfer and caddie as O'Krepki superbly details the history of the long lived caddie. Life Long Looper is very highly recommended to non-specialist general readers who appreciate biographies of interesting people leading interesting lives (and most particularly those readers with an interest in golfing) for its involved and personal telling of every given aspect of an inspirational life.

4-0 out of 5 stars A fine exit
This book is the story of the Jack Nicklaus's farewell tour of the 4 majors. After hip replacement surgery, Nicklaus decided that 2000 would be the last year he would attempt to play in all 4 of professional golf's major championships. In a way, the timing worked out great. He was not normally exempt for the U.S. Open, and he assumed that 2000 would be the last year he would be granted a special exemption to play. I guess I am of the age that I really don't quite remember him when he was at his dominant peak of golf in the 70's. I just remember his great wins at the U.S. Open and at the Masters when most people had written him off as being too old. So this book is confirmation of his role as probably the greatest golfer of the 20th century, but is is sort of sad at the same time that it isn't until the age of 60 (!) that Nicklaus has to admit to giving into father time.
