2-0 out of 5 stars Puzzling Accounting of Facts
I am puzzled at why Sampson would set out to deminish Jones and his family. I noted that some of "his" facts are actually completely different in other books that are exhaustively researched such as Mark Frost's book The Grand Slam and others I have read including Down the Fairway by Jones himself.Even if everything negative he came up with was true it isn't really very much in light of the great man that he was.He was a man of impeccable character but he was a human being. He was sensitive and conscientious, intellegent, honest and gracious above all.
5-0 out of 5 stars Best Book Yet by Sampson
I was pleasantly surprised with 'The Slam'.I have come to enjoy Curt's books over the years, but this one is his best, by far.(...)

4-0 out of 5 stars Interesting, enlightening, but with a certain tunnel vision
A marvelous look at the pressure that a champion athlete faces as he attempts to achieve something never done before.Few accounts offer the depth Mr. Sampson does as to the pressure Bobby Jones faced and the turmoil he experienced as he attempted to win the 1930 Grand Slam. The Bobby Jones of

5-0 out of 5 stars Where were you?
If old enough, you remember where you were when President Kennedy was assassinated. If a golf fan, you remember where you were when Payne Stewart died.I was in a restaurant having lunch with a couple ofother guys. We paid only occasional attention to reports on the televisionbehind the bar. A Lear jet was off course and expected to crash. Sadly, wesoon would learn its occupants. If you read no other chapter in thisexcellent account of Payne Stewart's life, read the one detailing how thegolfer's friends and associates learned the bad news. It's a dramatic pieceof writing by Larry Guest. And it creates a bond between any reader whoremembers that day and the golfer's friends in the book who talk about it. In another memorable chapter, Guest's detailed reporting makes you feelas if you're right in the aircraft during its deadly, and as yetunexplained, flight from Florida to a midwestern cornfield. This bookwould be a good read even for people who are not golf fans. If you dofollow golf, it's a must read. If you were a Payne Stewart fan, you shouldhave already read it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Inspiration for a trip with my sons
I lost this book while I was vacationing with my wife in Italy for her 40th birthday.I couldn't wait to get home to buy another copy and finish it.That was 9 years ago.I was so moved by the story that I made a pledge to try and take my sons on a similar trip one day.Well, I've lost 3 jobs since then and have been paying college expenses for 6 years, the last 4 years for 2 kids at a time. However, my current job allowed me to go to Aberdeen, Scotland 6 times last year alone. While reading the book again, I dog earred places I wanted to include on my trip.I have also been saving magazine articles as well as itineraries from acquainteses who have made similar golf excursions. And during my trips to Scotland I've developed friendships and they have helped with insights to add my catalog of information. 5-0 out of 5 stars A great story for father and sons regardless if they golf
I picked up this book at a used book sale on a lark.I love Scotland and thought a book on a father and son golf trip to the old courses would be fun. What I didn't expect was such a great book about the relationship between a very optimistic father and his earnest son.Just before the trip the father discovers he has cancer and not long to live. They go on the trip anyway and we get to know two interesting people and how life's lessons can come in many places including on a golf course.I lost my father a few months before I read this book.I took my time reading it, not wanting it to end.It helped ease the pain of my loss and to direct my energies and lessons I have to offer to my sons.

5-0 out of 5 stars Fantastic and Moving
I am scottish and learnt the game of golf from my father when I was 8. My father and I played courses all over scotland as well as in the united states. The game taught me much about myself, but also much about my father. Though nothing like "Opti", my father had his own valauble pieces of advice that he passed to me. I moved to Japan at 22 and two years later found out my father had a year to live. I was stunned and returned immediately to be with him. In fact he only lived 2 months, but in that time he and I played two more games of golf, only a stones throw from the course mentioned in this book, Gullane.

5-0 out of 5 stars Absorbing and enlightening
Not QUITE the usual coffee-table sized book, this rich volume taught me more about golf course architecture - really, the thought behind a thinking-player's course - than anything else I've read.Yes, it's a professional biography of one architect, with a lot about his protege, Seth Raynor, but MacDonald was the consummate perfectionist, studying the subject and contemplating his creations perhaps more deeply than anyone else.
4-0 out of 5 stars Great National Golf Links Coverage
This is an awesome review of C.B. MacDonald but is mainly a book about the road to creating the National Golf Links.

I just read the first two chapters and have been laughing out loud!He has amazing creativity and is truly a wordsmith.Well worth the price paid.I hope Feherty continues to write more books because they keep getting funnier!

4-0 out of 5 stars If you read the column, buy the compilation
I only recently picked up on David Feherty and his writing. Being on the far side of the Pacific from where he plies his trade sets me back as to the happenings off the green in the golf world by, well, years. I found this one book helpful not only with catching up on golf in general, but also in getting aquainted with Mr. Feherty and his pen.Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Slight, wordy, but interesting, tale of golf's Bobby Jones
Bobby Jones is one of the most revered names in the rich history of golf. However, beyond the fact that all golf fans, and many casual observers, know that Jones won what was golf's Grand Slam in 1930 (U.S. Open, British Open, U.S. Amateur, British Amateur) and created Augusta National Golf Club and the Master's tournament, little is known about the man beyond a few blurbs. What better way to really learn about the man than to read the authorized biography penned by Jones' personal confidante, journalist O.B. Keeler. Unfortunately, a great opportunity seems to have been missed here. While "The Bobby Jones Story" does capture the amazing feats of golf career, it gives very little insight into the man himself. Keeler writes this biography less as a study of Bobby Jones and more as just an excited observer who was present for much of Jones' accomplishments. Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Inside The Champion's Mind
Great read, one all golfers will want to make, as Nicklaus suggests in the modern edition foreward.5-0 out of 5 stars Tradition
Bobby Jones shares his perspective on winning, losing, and his life-long battle against "Old Man Par".This is a must read for any serious student of golf history and tradition.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Great Champion and Charming Companion
If you not only enjoy playing golf but also cherish the game's traditions and values, and if you could purchase only one book about golf, this is it. Whether or not Jones is the greatest golfer ever is a judgment I eagerly entrust to those foolish enough to debate it. Suffice to say that he was among the greatest players and among the finest gentlemen ever associated with golf. Published in 1927 when Jones was just 25, three years before he won what has since been designated "The Grand Slam", this is a book in which Jones (in collaboration with Keeler) invites his reader to accompany him "down the fairway" of a life as well as a game. The first eleven chapters review the competitive process until what he characterizes as his "Biggest Year." In the final chapter of Part One, Jones observes that, "I started the year 1926 with one glorious licking and closed it with another. And it was the biggest golf-year I'll ever have." Or so he then thought. In that year, we're told, "Walter Hagen gave me the first drubbing, and of all the workmanlike washings-up I have experienced, this was far and away the most complete" and later, "George [von Elm] was too much for me....He simply outplayed me. It was coming to him....It was George's turn. So the biggest Year ended, as it began, with a beating. Still, I'll always feel kindly toward 1926." Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Well written, sensitive book about superb athlete
THis is one of the best sports biographies I have read. Its very well written, very unbiased, sensitive and portrays an accurate picture of this amazing human being. Its also a fun read and reveals a side of the Babe, her pranks, egocentric often annoying style, that few knew.In my mind she surely was the greatest woman,s athlete and this book truly does her justice. You won,t be disappointed

Amazing champion this lady was.Her accomplishments in a short life are dazzling.Like many others naturally gifted with athleticism and a burning desire to compete and win, Babe did just that.4-0 out of 5 stars Good.
Since I am from Beaumont, Texas (South Park) and a fan of the BABE, I found the book a very interesting read.I was unaware of the Babe's relationship with Betty Dodd; however, I feel that an individual's sexuallife is their own business.I can't help but wonder how the author couldhave been sure of their special relationship without ever being in the samebedroom with them???Changing her colostomy bag is hardly a sexual act,but the type of action from a nurse, close relative or friend. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars The Soul of Golf
This splendid little book is a double-edged Christmas gift: any intelligent golfer will love and benefit from it--and any gift-giver will appreciate having such an easy choice. "Passion for Golf" is not an instruction book, a how-to about better grips and reading greens. Instead it is a gracefully written (Merullo is a novelist) exploration of what golfers really battle on the course--not just the lies and bunkers and crosswinds but themselves and their demons: Ego, Anger, Fear, and others. Merullo writes of how to Read more

Editorial Review

The great Ben Hogan cast a long and complex shadow. A complicated and misunderstood man, he was so consumed with the solitary pursuit of excellence that the camaraderie of his game passed him by. Yet, he was utterly revered--for his consistency, his perseverance, his dedication, his mystery, and his courage. He was the one golfer his fellow golfers held in awe. Curt Sampson does a fine job of hacking through the rough of the Hogan mystique in search of the enigma who held the world at arm's length. His biography of Bantam Ben is as probing as it is solid; it aims for the man, and finds the bottom of the cup. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Hogan the man, the golfer, and business founder

Editorial Review

The problem with most authorized biographies is just that--they'reauthorized. They praise, adore, defend, excuse, inspire, whitewash, and lovetheir subjects, which, in the end, conspires to keep the reader at a distance.Tracey Stewart's homage to her late husband Payne Stewart does all of that. Itrarely allows a closer view than that available from where she witnessed most ofhis stirring final round victory in the 1999 U.S. Open: on TV.Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Well, I have ADHD and it kept my attention.
Hat's off to Tracey for her work in getting this together.Though lacking in specific details of his past behaivors enough is said to allow the reader to understand the change in his character once he accepted Christ. This book is not another Christian testimony. It contains the elements of a what makes a good man.We are all sinners and a perfect picture is not painted here.Payne was a great golfer and a great man that many could learn from. Then again, just act like you think Jesus would have and you will be close to the mark of Payne. Thank you for a great book Tracey.

5-0 out of 5 stars Payne Stewart, the best
I have recently finished the biography of payne stewart. It was one of the best books I have ever read. From start to finish of the book I was always interested. The best parts of the book is when it talks about all the tournaments he has been in and winning the U.S. open in 1999.

5-0 out of 5 stars One of the best.
When I first started reading this book I had a tough time putting it down. It takes us back to Tigers early golf days right up to the winning of his first Masters Tournament in record numbers. Tim Rosaforte really makes this book come alive. You will not be disappointed in this one.

3-0 out of 5 stars A CHAMPION RISES
At age twenty-one, Eldrick "Tiger" Woods became the youngest individual to win the Masters Tournament. This young phenomena ushered in a new age for golf and sports fans all over wanted to know, who is this rising champion? Sports writer Tim Rosaforte provides that answer by penning one of the first biographies of Tiger.4-0 out of 5 stars A Very Well Written Book
Although the story dragged in the beginning, I found the book Tiger Woods The Makings Of A Champion very interesting and entertaining. It was also a very well written book.It struck me with awe when I read that Tiger started swinging a golf club at 10 months. The book also shows people how hard Tiger's childhood was. That he couldn't even play at some golf courses because he was black. It showed how great a golfer Tiger Woods is, and how he could possibly be the player of the future. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars A splendidly written biography
Tiger Woods first came to fame in 1997 when he won a spectacular victory at the Master Golf Tournament in Augusta, Georgia. He went on to be one of the most successful professional golfers the game has ever known and won the admiration of a whole new generation of young men and women for the game. Indeed, because of Tiger Woods, the game of golf has a degree of popularity within minority communities that it has never before held in its entire history. Libby Hughes' Tiger Woods is a splendidly written biography of their remarkable young man's career from when he hit his first golf ball at the age of 9 months, through his days as a junior champion in grad school and high school, on to his years at Stanford University (when Tiger turned pro in his second year of college) and down to the present with a representative sampling drawn from his spectacular pro tournament victories. Tiger Woods is a great biography for young readers and will serve to inspire children with one of the most genuinely praiseworthy young men in professional sports today! ... Read more
