3-0 out of 5 stars The story of one of golf's greats
This is the tale of Moe Norman, one of golf's greatest, but probably least well known heroes. Born into poverty, he used the extra time he had to turn himself into the greatest ball striker ever known. Overcoming financial problems, numerous brushes with the RCGA and other ruling bodies, he carved a place out for himself in golf history, and is now one of its immortal figures.

4-0 out of 5 stars Not bad for a girl!
I played golf years ago, and gave it up because I'm a tomboy--and got tired of hitting from the girls tees, scavenging for clubs in the "women's" corner of the huge golf store, and the fact I would never hit as far as my husband.Recently a GIRLFRIEND convinced me to take it up again.I scoffed at this book, when I saw it--but my husband mentioned it, after seeing her play in a golf tournament on TV.And you what?!I laughed out loud. She made me realize golf for women is different.Chauvinists still exist in the modern world, we can't hit as far (get over it), and golf with your husband can be enjoyable.I'm not sure the golf instruction was enough, or needed--but I'm going to try the stronger grip she suggests.I'm sure she paid the big bucks for some good instructors--so I'll try it.

5-0 out of 5 stars GOLF ANGEL AND MORE
I thoroughly enjoyed reading this book. I thought Cheryl Ladd wrote an excellent book. It was interesting, funny and inspiring. I took up golf to play with my husband. After reading this book, Cheryl inspired me to take some more lessons to improve my game, and hopefully play more golf with my husband. Cheryl Ladd told some funny stories in the book that actually had me laughing out loud. I would say this was my favorite book I read this year; ok it's early in the year, but I totally recommend this book for men and women. Enjoy!

5-0 out of 5 stars A fun book for any golfer at heart
A fun book to read on those wintery days when you can't go out for a round of golf. It's lighthearted and an easy read.Female golfers will definitely sympathize with Cheryl's Token Chick stories.I found myself nodding in agreement and laughing out loud as I read the book on my commute to work because any woman who's played at least one round with the boys will totally relate.

5-0 out of 5 stars Sir Walter, Out from the Shadow of St. Bob
This is a wonderful book, and an important American chronicle as well. Noted editor, journalist and golf writer Tom Clavin has gone where few have in the past, finally providing us with a stylish and authoritative biography of the great Walter Hagen, and of that man's lasting impact on the sport, both domestically and on the international stage. In doing so, Clavin has restored "The Haig" to his rightful place in the pantheon of golfing greats and as the true pioneer of American professional golf.
5-0 out of 5 stars A Bigger than Life Man
There are a handful of sports players who come into a game and leave it quite differently than they found it. I'm not sure that Hagen could be considered the intentor of professional golf, but I am sure that he is a major contender for the title. It seems like a lot of people in the time between the world wars lived life that was bigger than life.
5-0 out of 5 stars The Original Sports Celebrity
Even if you are not a golfer, you will enjoy this biography which vividly portrays a man who pioneered the role of the celebrity sports star. The Tiger Woods of his time, Sir Walter Hagen brought attention to the sport of golf as well as himself.Clavin brings alive the era of the roaring twenties and breathes life into his subject with numerous anecdotes which make you feel like you were there on the green in the tie-breaker with Hagen himself. And for someone like me who doesn't know a lot about the history or specifics of the sport of golf, it proved educational on the fine points of the game.Hagen also emerges personally as a real dandy, and a larger than life social figure who always created excitment wherever he went.He sounds just like the type of guy you'd like to hang out with at the pub. ... 3-0 out of 5 stars One Over Par
I ordered this book hoping it would be to Sam Snead what "Ben Hogan: An American Life" was to Ben Hogan and "Grand Slam" was to Bobby Jones.Unfortunately, it's clearly not in the same flight as those two exceptional biographies. While there are some spectacular photos that capture the brilliance of Snead's wondrous swing, the quality of the writing and scholarship does not quite make the cut.

5-0 out of 5 stars A graduate course in the career of Sam Snead!
Sam Snead was a legend in every sense of that much-overused word and veteran golf writer Al Barkow has fashioned a biography that anyone will enjoy. However, if you're a serious student of The Slammer's career (that is, if you've already read 1962's "The Education of a Golfer" and 1996's "The Game I Love"), you'll find "Sam - The One and Only Sam Snead" absolutely invaluable for filling in gaps that have existed for years. In this book, you'll learn about the family relationships that motivated (and sometimes hindered) Sam Snead, including several quite poignant passages concerning his disabled son. You'll also learn about the only golf lesson Sam Snead ever had, the reasons he was viewed with some disdain by the golfing "establishment", and the heretofore unmentioned reasons that he never won the U. S. Open (including a possible conspiracy by longtime USGA director Joe Dey). You'll also learn for the first time EXACTLY how many U. S. Opens Sam Snead would have won if he could have shot 69 in the final round every time.An amusing bonus consists of a short chapter that "reconstructs" what he was thinking as he made that fateful 8 on the 72nd hole to lose the 1939 U. S. Open.If you're looking for an exceptionally informative course of "graduate studies" concerning the career of Sam Snead, this is the book you've been waiting for!

5-0 out of 5 stars Great book
Wonderful photos of Sam, many I had never seen before. Barkow is a great writer and if you haven't already, read everything he has written about golf. You can't go wrong. This book offered insights into Sam's personal life - his marriage and the tragic circumstance of his developmentally disabled son Terrance - that were a revelation to me, and I have been reading golf biographies and histories for 30 years.A great book. You will learn more about Sam than you had known before, which is something you can't say about many books. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars An awesome book that any Palmer fan will love
This is another type of book that any Arnold Palmer fan will love to read. This edition not only had my interest from Palmer's written words, but the clever inserts of about a dozen or so Palmer collectibles made it all the more intriguing. It was a book that once I picked it up could not put down. The story of his career and family life that was extremely interesting and insightful, yet entertaining. From a personal perspective I liked 'A Personal Journey' but was even more impressed with this one !

5-0 out of 5 stars Wat a Gift for a Golfer
Before there was Governator Arnie there was Arnie the golfer. It seems like golf has always had a shining star or two that go beyond the game to making a lasting impression on the world at large. And Arnie certainly fit that. He generated an image for a generation of people, inspiring to do better in their work, in their life. Not the world's best golfer, he's simply Arnie, the world famous guy next door. His approachability and down-home humility have secured his status as one of the most admired people in and out of sports.

4-0 out of 5 stars The story I would rather read or hear about
We often get a quick blurb by anouncers whenever an unknown makes it into the top running during a tournament. Some kid who has done nothing put play golf since he could hold a club, or some underadvantaged caddie who figured out how to beat a few of the best. We don't tend to hear much more than that, though.
4-0 out of 5 stars Good book
To simply put it, this was a very good book and an easy read too, however many typos and errors. But other than that i loved the book.

4-0 out of 5 stars Funny stuff
Maybe I'm biased because I think Caddyshack is the funniest movie of all time, but I enjoyed this book, even though it only took a couple of hours to read.It won't win any awards for composition, but that doesn't take away from the fact that it's a really funny, entertaining book...sounds like Caddyshack the movie, doesn't it?

2-0 out of 5 stars Yikes! This was BAD....
I was at the local library looking at books in the golf section.I've read a couple by Tommy Armour and one by Ben Hogan, both were good and informative.
5-0 out of 5 stars Cinderella Story: My Life in Golf By: Bill Murray
Not only is Bill Murray a great comedian, he is also a good writer.I found this book very enjoyable and extremely funny. For a man who has never written a book before, I believe Bill has done an excellent job. From the very beginning you can tell that Bill has his very own style of writing, the dedication page says it all.(Pg. V to VI).In my opinion, Bill also puts a lot of voice into this book because he is reflecting on his own personal experiences.(Pg. 4, second paragraph).Bill, much like in acting, never has a serious moment throughout the book; it's all about the laughs.(Pg. 3).Above all though, I noticed that when reading this book, it's as if you aren't reading the book, but listening to Bill give a stand-up comedy routine or sitting at a bar sharing a drink with him. There is no book, its just stories. He is just reminiscing about the past, be it about golf or otherwise.Bill's stories really have no start or finish, but just lead into another, funnier one.(Pg. 210 to 211).If I had to sum this book up in one word, it would be simply hilarious. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Good Inside Look at the Majors and the Golfers Who Play in Them
Good read, especially good at giving an inside view of the golfers themselves, who they are, what they value, how they interact with each other and how they, individually and as a group, view the Majors.Very good read, especially about the golfers, how they they encourage and compete with one another--Lee Janzen's exchange with Scott Stricker is particularly memorable--and about how they approach and play the Majors.Readers may have a concern about this book being dated, and from a historical standpoint, it may be---But it is also like the old television series from long ago--"You Are There"--which effectively recreated great moments in history as if we, the viewers, were in deed there when it was happening. So it is with this book. Yes, we know who won the tournament, but when the final putts fall on these pages, there is still a sense of wonder, pride and accomplishment for the golfer.Feinstein has done his job well. Reading this book makes us feel like we are there when it happened, even though it happened several years ago. The "you are there" part is what makes this book a must read for golfers, for would-be golfers and for those who love and appreciate the game and those who play or try to play it.
5-0 out of 5 stars An interesting read to this day!
Feinstein's book chronicles the 1998 PGA Tour Season highlighting the Majors which are the Masters, the US Open, the British Open and the PGA.
5-0 out of 5 stars Inside the Ropes at the Majors in 1998
The year was 1998 and the winners were Mark O'Meara (The Masters at Augusta National and The British Open at Royal Birkdale), Lee Janzen (The U.S. Open at the Olympic Club), and Vijay Singh (The P.G.A. Championship at Sahalee Country Club). Although all four Majors are conducted under the collaborative supervision of the U.S.G.A. and the Royal and Ancient Golf Club organizations, each has its own terms and conditions for participation as well as stages of qualification to compete with those who, for various reasons, are automatically eligible. For me, one of this book's most fascinating subjects is the qualifying process to which many are called but few are eventually chosen. Perhaps only the annual process to earn a P.G.A card creates greater tension and frustration for those involved. Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars So so.
The story of Sifford is a very inspiring one. The book was just written in a horrible way. Every other sentance starts with the word "hell". It gets boring afterwards. The first half of the book moves very slowly, but the second half picks up a little more speed. This book will let people know that before Tiger Woods, there was Charlie, Lee Elder, and a lot of other guys too. It is a very good book. What Sifford went through was just horrid, but that's the reality of the world we live in. I could never blame him for being so bitter after all these years of obstacles and not being praised for what he has done. Never mind praise - just for not being allowed to play the game of golf. My limited grasp on golf parlance probably made it a little boring to read this book. But it's a good book, although it may make you a little sleepy.

5-0 out of 5 stars A great book!!!
I read this book a few years back before it was offered through normal distribution channels.Mr. Sifford was actually distributing this book from his home.Being from Greensboro and a golfer, I was extremely impressed by Mr. Sifford's commitment to the game and his determination to play as a PGA professional. You truly wonder what the golfing world has already missed by not allowing Mr. Sifford and other African American golfers to pursue their dreams. When Mr. Sifford was attempting to break the "color barrier" there were more black professional golfers than there is today! His story is heartbreaking and encouraing, what he and other black golfers experienced (to include in my hometown of Greensboro NC) is almost beyond belief!I would strongly recommend reading this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Any hacker worth his putter should read this one !
This book took me to a time when all african -americans could look to their heritage with pride. Jackie Robinson was a great man and I placethe accomplishments of Charlie Sifford right along side of his. He showed us what real intestinal fortitude is all about. This should be required reading for all youngsters interested in participating in sports. I would highly recommend this book to anyone looking for a great story of courage under enormous pressure. This book teaches us about the strength and character we all posess inside. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent for use in classroom.
An excellent work to understand the cultural and historical issues facing blacks in pre civil rights history and beyond. It is a penetrating and inspirational look at overcoming obstacles in pursuit of a dream. It is not contexted solely in racial struggles of minorites but goes beyond this to the courage and deliberation required for any of us that have dreams and aspirations to accomplish something to make this a better world.

This is a story of triumph over discrimination based upon the color of one's skin.5-0 out of 5 stars Inspirational history
Once I began reading "Clearview:America's Course" I simply could not put it down. It is a personal historical account of the transition of our country from a place where only some enjoy freedom to a country where finally we can boast that all people are free. We see the past 7 decades through one man's vision, uncluttered by resentment and bitterness at the unjust treatment he endured simply because he was black. Dr. Powell is an inspiration to all. If you are serious and passionate about golf, you must read this book. It's a quick read and you have nothing to lose.

4-0 out of 5 stars great read for the right golfer
This book should be read in conjunction with taking lessons from a qualified professional instructor. Its message is a valuable one, but not so much for the beginning golfer, and the book is quite clear in stating as much..At no time does the book pretend to be an instructional guide for those who've never played the game.

5-0 out of 5 stars TAKES ONE TO KNOW ONE
Only someone who does not suffer from alcoholism would question the ability of a small woman to drink insane amounts of alcohol. I have no doubt that Laura Baugh drank every drink she says she did - I have been there.I, too, abstained during my pregnancies, it was the one time when I didn't struggle with myself over drinking or not drinking. This is a great story and I admire Laura for pulling herself out of the despair she felt - I know, I have felt it also.

1-0 out of 5 stars This bio seems contrived.
I find it very, very hard to believe that anyone, especially a small woman, could drink to the degree that Laura Baugh did and not sustain liver damage. She also says she abstained during her pregnancies...did she know the instant she was pregnant? I think not. I guess writing is an easier way to make a buck than playing golf.

5-0 out of 5 stars A VERY DRAMATIC STORY
THIS IS THE STORY OF LAURA BAUGH, RECOVERING ALCOHOLIC, PRO GOLFER, AND MOTHER. SHE DOES A GREAT JOB DESCRIBING HER LIFE AND CAREER. HER STRUGGLE WITH INNER DEMONS, BROKEN MARRIAGES, AND PRESSURES IS VERY INTERESTING. HER STORY IS A MIRACLE. AN EXCELLENT EXAMPLE OF THE 12 STEP PROGRAM OF AA AT WORK. LAURA HAS BEEN BLESSED BY GOD AND THIS IS A GREAT READ FOR ALL RECOVERING AND PRACTICING ADDICTED PEOPLE. I REMEMBER WHEN LAURA FIRST CAME ON THE PRO TOUR IN THE EARLY 70'S, SHE WAS THE HOTTEST HOTTIE IN SPORTS. GLAD TO SEE SHE HAS CONFRONTED HER ADDICTION AND DEALS WITH IT ONE DAY A TIME. SHE IS STILL HOT AND CERTAINLY PROVEN TO BE A BABY MACHINE. MUST READ. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Hardwood Magic
The NBA today basically ignores the NBA that was home to places like Syracuse, Cincinnati and Rochester. That is why first-person recollections are so important as the history of those seasons fade with the passing away of former players and owners.
4-0 out of 5 stars Hey, did I ever tell you about...
Imagine being invited to lunch with Red Auerbach and having him start a conversation with that line - maybe it's Larry Bird; maybe Wilt Chamberlain and Bill Russell; maybe Bob Cousy.Over half a century in the game of basketball and all the stories that come with it.I'm not even a Celtics fan, but still enjoyed the stories. You can't help but just sit back and enjoy listening.Combine Red Auerbach's character with one of today's best sports writers/authors, John Feinstein. You have a great formula for a really good book.An easy and enjoyable read for any basketball fan.

4-0 out of 5 stars dribbling redundancy
for those who tire easilly when tales are told, retold, rehashed, and generally lobbed around like tennis balls, this read should be avoided.however, if one enjoys the spoils of old-school hoops, bland jokes, thoughts on the decorum, feinstein offers an engaging bout.if i'm not mistaken, red nearly left the celtics in the late 70's (or so we were told at least 3 times).many of these little anecdotes appear several times throughout the tome.i'd be one to believe that a session at the china doll would be priceless...but that's it.one session...nothing more, nothing less.i get the impression that after several weeks at the lunch table, one would suffer from severe deja vu.my hunch is that the topics are rarely fresh and if a current event comes up, somehow red will relate back to something that occured back in the day.so, while feinstein reveres the sessions and somehow fancies himself as "in", i wouldn't be willing to go beyond this at face value.bottom line, they spend a morning eating egg rolls with the greatest basketball coach in world history. it translates well for a solid pile of words.one might even suggest that red is surrounded by a group of parrots. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Greatest Sports Book Every Read!
Mark Frost's book, "The Greatest Game Ever Played," is a must read for anyone interested in reading a real life drama-thriller.Even if you're not a golf fan or a sports fan in general, the book will grab you from the start and tug at your "heart-strings."Well written and developed, the storyline covers the full range of the human condition. From poverty and class division to eventual champion, Francis Quimet's story is uplifting and almost spiritual. Oh, by the way, if you happen to be a golf fan, you'll love the book's attention to detail of golf's early years and development. And if you're a spots fan in general, Hollywood could not have created a better story. Just think if some relatively unknown amateur defeated Tiger Woods and Phil Mickelson in an 18-hole playoff for the US Open Championship; will that's exactly what happens in this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars summer reading
I bought this for my daughter. She is reading this for one of her summer reading books. She loves it! Would recommend.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Book on Golf and Friendship
I've read several of John Feinstein's books, and have never been disappointed. This was one of his better efforts. It's the story of Bruce Edwards and Tom Watson.Edwards was a caddy, and was lucky enough to hook up with Watson back in 1973.He spent most of the next 30 years caddying for one of the best golfers and best people in the game.
4-0 out of 5 stars Glimpse Into Humanity
On several occassions, I found myself getting choked up while reading this book.It is intensly personal and we're lucky to be provided with an up close view of what Bruce Edwards and those who loved and worked with him went threw.Experience is a hard thing to acquire, unless you actually have it.This book offers a rare exception to its reader.

5-0 out of 5 stars A tale of golf, friendship and courage
Perhaps my only mistake was choosing to start reading this book the same night I had finished John Feinstein's most recent effort, "Let Me Tell You a Story," his book about the legendary Celtics figure, Red Auerbach. For that reason and that reason only, it took me a little longer to get into this one. After all, following that one is almost impossible.

Editorial Review

Since storming onto the PGA Tour in 1996 and winning the Masters in1997, Tiger Woods has topped golf's leader boards in most of the importantcategories, including ink. No golfer--indeed, no athlete, except maybe MichaelJordan and Muhammad Ali--has been the subject of so many words in such a shorttime. In Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Tiger Woods
Rising The Bar is a book about a famous golfer named Tiger Woods by Tom Rosaforte. This book follows Tiger as he makes his professional golf career.Tiger was 2 when he started picking up the game of golf.He would watch his father when he would go golfing. When Tiger was 12 he won his first state golf tournament and by the time he was 19 he was in the Junior PGA (professional golf association).By the time Tiger reached the age of 23 he won his first professional golf title.3-0 out of 5 stars SHALLOW STUFF HERE
I enjoyed the book simply because I enjoy reading just about anything about Tiger. That said, I must say I was rather disapointed in this particular read. Not much original thought or insight to be found here.I was rather amused at the author's efforts to use every arcane and obscure golf term he could think of.He was a bit like a "name dropper" but in this case, he used "golf jargon" rather than celebrities. I also found I extremely difficult to follow the sequence of events. The chronology did not always work out.(I do wonder why publishers do not use editors anymore????If I had one I certainly would not be misspelling so many words).Often times I found one event or one bit of information referred to differently, even in the same paragraph. All in all, I have read better.
