3-0 out of 5 stars Waist Deep
I can see why fans of John Daly would love this book - he portrays himself as the good ol' boy that many golf fans know and adore. But the BS here is waist-deep. The book actually made me sad - there is absolutely nothing to admire about this guy. He has squandered his talent and his money. He tries to portray himself as a champion, but anyone who follows the Tour knows he is the biggest quitter of all time. Whenever he is playing poorly or is out of contention, he throws in the towel - he has probably shot more final rounds in the 80's than any Tour player in history. Bottom line - if you're already a Daly fan, you'll probably love this book. But if you read it wanting to find out more about him, it will reveal him as one gigantic, pathetic waste of talent.

4-0 out of 5 stars A True Character
Though not particuarly well written, this autobiography is nonetheless engaging and entertaining. Many of Daly's personal faults are already well known, so there is not too much in this book anyone will find shocking.Despite what another reviewer wrote, I never felt that Daly was making excuses for his behavior, giving his side of the story and providing more context to the myriad of situations he has created and found himself in over the years. He is by and large unapologetic, which in a way is refreshing. He seems mostly at peace with who he is and his take me or leave me attitude is sad in some respects. His ongoing gambling problem, poor diet, poor romantic choices, binge drinking, etc have kept him from regaining his position as a great golf player. If you like Daly buy the book.He is a definite character and overall a likable one who seems to generally appreciate his fans and those less fortunate than himself.

4-0 out of 5 stars putting it all out there
I enjoyed reading this book. You feel for John. He's a good guy. Some of his unwanted drama is self-inflicted and some not. I can't imagine anyone to be as good as he is with all the distractions. Bottom line, he lives large and doesn't just amble through life. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Heaven On Earth
This book is fantastic, and the only thing better than reading it was to experience Bandon Dunes in person a year ago!We were there just before Bandon Trails opened so we only got to play Bandon Dunes and Pacific Dunes.I've played Whistling Straits and have been to Pebble Beach. They're great but nothing compares to the pure golf experience at Bandon.Goodwin's fascinating story of how Bandon came to be is an incredible tribute to the vision and perseverence of Mike Keiser in building his dream. ... Editorial Review

Arguably, Ben Hogan was the most technically precise striker ever to hit a golf ball. Revered and feared throughout a marvelous career, he was his sport's most complexly dark personality, as well. This opulent coffee-table homage to the "Wee Ice Mon" combines the Spartan imagery of Alexander's photographs with a trio of perceptive essays by Dave Anderson, Ben Crenshaw, and Dan Jenkins to capture Hogan's rare, imperial essence and the powerful authority of his game with majesty, but without fawning. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Be sure to understand what you are getting
Whether you find this book worth the money will depend on whether you think Ben Hogan was the God of Golf (or at least one member of the Trinity). It is a large-format book, and the quality of the photographs(all black-and white) is excellent.I believe they were all taken on thesame day, when Hogan allowed Jules Alexander to accompany him. They prettymuch just show Hogan at work on the course, and they do capture who he was.The accompanying comments and essays are interesting, but the photographsare the stars of the book.Just make sure you realize that you are gettinga series of photographs taken on one day -- this isn't a retrospective ofHogan's career, and there are no swing sequences or anything like that.Ifyou are a Hogan worshipper, however, this book is a must.

5-0 out of 5 stars A must-have work for the Hogan fan
This book is appropriately titled. The photos are truly classic and do a wonderful job of portraying the on-course Hogan, particularly his steely focus and gorgeous swing. The accompanying text is solid.I most enjoyed Ken Venturi's comments which accompanied the photos, as well as Dan Jenkin's recounting of the man behind the mystique.I was somewhat disappointed that the photos are all from the late 50s, mostly from the same tournament.Yet, this is only a minor issue.Every true Hogan fan should add this work to his or her collection. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars The Bible is no longer in print!
For anyone who is interested in golf course architecture, this book is a must for your library.Contains a complete index (a continuous work-in-process) of architects and their courses. Essentially every course in the world (including those which are no longer in existance), is listed including its location, date of orgin and the architects who created it also the provider of any known substantial (professional) renovation work.It must take a tremendous effort for the authors to keep this book up to date. I hope the fact that this book is no longer in print indicates that the authors are hard at work.If you do not have a copy find one, if you have to go the the library and photocopy theirs (but bring a stack of dimes its very long). ... 1-0 out of 5 stars No mas!
This is at least one book too many for Peter. Most of the stories are old and too many involve farts. If you find this funny, your sense of humor has not developed since the second grade. The book is full of errors.Peter tells how Riviera is one of his favorite courses and then tells about his hole-in-one on the 15th hole. Sorry, Peter but the 15th hole is a par four. You made your ace on the 14th hole.It is evident that Peter not only did not write the book, he didn't even read it.
2-0 out of 5 stars Real lightweight
There's nothing really bad about this slim book, but the writing is bland and cliches abound.I found the book neither enlightening nor funny.I'm a big golf fan and like Peter Jacobsen as a player.I always like to see him win or do well.I think that the problem with the book is that Peter is simply too nice a guy, at least in print (and that does not mean to imply he is not otherwise a nice guy), to be very interesting.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great writing team
Once again Jacobsen and Sheehan have outdone themselves writing a book about their love of the game and the great stories that have ensued from the fairways worldwide...

Editorial Review

The first thing you'll learn in this book, which details how Earl Woods raised his son, Tiger, to become probably the greatest golfer who ever lived, is that your child will never be another Tiger Woods. Tiger is a prodigy in the sense that Mozart was a prodigy. But even if your child has completely ordinary abilities, Read more

This moron is a jealous racist.Everything he said is wrong. He should know what he is talking about before he speaks.Earl never asked Tiger to go golfing with him.The only way he would take him is if Tiger asked to go.Tiger is Stanford educated, insanely rich, the best golfer in history, never been in trouble and calls his dad his best friend.I would give anything to be sure my kids were half the person Tiger is.If you read this book and got nothing from it I feel bad for your kids.By the way he is the best dressed person on tour!!

5-0 out of 5 stars A plus book
This book is great!Anytime you can read about wonderful parenting, it is a highllight in your day.As the mother of 2 boys I can only hope to be so self sacrificing as Earl Woods.Whether you are into golf or not,all children could benefit from more attention from their parents. This book is about putting the child first and helping them make their dreams a reality. While so many children watch tv all day, it sure is refreshing to read about a parent who demonstrates the real meaning of parenting-take the time to train the children up right and they will end up as you trained them.Earl is truly an inspiration.Thank you for writing the book if you read this email Mr. Woods.

5-0 out of 5 stars Reflections from Largely Ignored Golfing Foundation
Little publicity gained from club pro, other than the infamous club pro's students who do good. These pros (male and female now) are true backbone of the sport, feeding the sport. In this case, Claude Harmon Jr. reflects on his father, famous club pro and player who wore the coveted Green Jacket.
5-0 out of 5 stars A most remarkable budle of stories about golf
Highly recommended book a few super nce stories about one of golf's lost hero's the club pro that copeted at international level. And a tribute to a father from his sons.

This is the type of book I wish I had available growing up. It is a wonderful source of advice on golf and life. Butch blends the right amount of information on his background and famous students along with a touching tribute to his Dad.

Editorial Review

Together with companion tomes on Ben Hogan and Byron Nelson, this oversize homage to Bobby Jones forms golf's most imposing threesome of photographic celebrations. The only golfer ever to win the elusive Grand Slam, Jones was among the most dominant sporting personalities of the Roaring '20s and early '30s, an athlete of unsurpassed grace and charisma. As much as the photographs capture Jones's enormous accomplishment, the forward by Alistair Cooke, and accompanying essays by Dave Anderson, Ben Crenshaw, Peter Dobreiner, Nick Seitz, and Larry Dorman put those accomplishments in perspective and offer insight on the man and his legacy. "What we are left with in the end," supposes Cooke, "is a forever young, good-looking Southerner, an impeccably courteous and decent man with a private ironical view of life who, to the good fortune of people who saw him, happened to play the great game with more magic and more grace than anyone before or since." Thankfully, Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A cherished read
By reading this book I began to admire Bobby Jones, not so much for his golf but for his character and his strength in making it to the end.It would have been a lot easier for him in a folklore sense if he had died young instead of being tortured with a crippling, painful disease that challenged him physically and was a test to him mentally and emotionally.I admire that he never hid himself away like so many famous people do that want to be remembered as they "were".I believe that this is the most admirable thing about him. That and his willingness to serve in WWII, landing on the same beach the day after D-Day.Not just a "for show" tour of duty. His devotion to his family, his country and his friends and his hometown are quite amazing. He is a role model in many ways that I don't even think of golf as one of them but for his tenaciousness, his intellect, his well roundedness and his extreme graciousness. He could have derailed many times but he never did in life. It's a loss that there isn't more to read about his life to know how he managed to adjust to everyday life and his illness, how he kept putting one foot in front of the other. The criticism seems unjust re: Chick Evans, Jones was very kind in all his correspondence to him which I have read in other books. Also, so much is made of his temper which he defends and explains in "Down the Fairway" by Jones, as not worse than any other player of the time and shortlived as a childish display that was never witnessed again at least publically for the rest of his life.Bobby Jones accomplished an amazing number of feats that most of us would feel proud to do even one of such as the many languages he spoke, the degrees, his many intellectual skills, a good family man and most of all his grace in a life.

4-0 out of 5 stars Interesting insights on Jones
Most sports fans have heard that Jones won the Grand Slam, but few (including myself) realize the temper that Jones had or how the quest to win ate him up. Also the story of his later life was unknown to me as well.

5-0 out of 5 stars Not just a golf story an excellent Historical Narrative
Historical Narrative in the spirit of Seabiscuit or Jeff or Michael Shaara's works.Excellent story interwoven with the characters, times, and actions that surrounded Bobby Jones. ... Read more

Editorial Review

The title sets the tone for David Owen's delightful romp through golf's mysteries, marvels, and malevolences: "Just once," goes the traditional Scottish lament, "I wish I would play my usual game." Owen, who turned away from golf as a kid because Richard Nixon played it and Jerry Garcia didn't, sets out anew to find his game in all the usual--and not so usual--places: he searches for a swing at golf school; pursues golf's enigmas in Scotland; explores the secrets of club design at the Ping factory; follows Freddie Couples at the Ryder Cup; and, once he gets his handicap down to a respectable single digit, sets out to tear up some of the best courses in the land. This is a wonderful odyssey into a maddening game, and Owen covers his course with sharp insight, prose as smooth as Augusta's greens, and wit as inviting as the bottom of the cup. But don't let his sense of humor lull you; Owen is serious about his quest to come to terms with this game. His ability to accept "the difference between a slice and a draw is a certain number of beers" is--no kidding--sober testament to that. No hacker on the planet would disagree. Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Book
I laughed (Myrtle chapter).. I cried (Top Ten chapter).. A roller coaster of action and suspense (Disney Pro-Am Chapter).. a Thriller (Ireland Chapter- or more specifically, Irish cuisine)...Humorously captures theemotions of anyone who suddenly (and dramatically) becomes smitten withthis game. Only true golf lovers need apply.

4-0 out of 5 stars He is every avid golfer
If you think of golf while at the office, in the car, on the can; if you perform practice swings whenever you are sure you will not hit a wall, furniture or another person; if you dream of playing every course that hasbeen mentioned just barely favorably in print, you will love this book. Isaw myself and every golfer I have ever met in this book. And I couldn'thelp but laugh at most of those golfers that Owen met including himselfsometimes. I also felt much envy for the courses he was able to playespecially in the UK. He moves from subject to subject as smoothly as aputt on the number 1 green on the first day of the Masters. This bookbrings an understanding to the game for hackers that you don't get fromwatching pros. Loved it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Comfortable Conversation with Golfing Great
Nelson truly is a golfing gem, one that gets somewhat lost in all the current player hype. But this is likely due to media hype, not the players; they are humble around the like of Lord Byron, and most if not all big names play the King's, the Bear's and the Nelson's tournaments.
4-0 out of 5 stars Worth your time
This is simply a straightforward account of Nelson's life by The Man himself. It's primary focus is his poor-as-dirt childhood and rise to stardom on the PGA Tour, culminating in The Streak of eleven straight wins in 1945 (he retired the next year). His television work is also covered, as is the death of his wife of 50 years and subsequent remarriage, but the primary focus is on his rise to stardom and retirement to ranching. It turns out that he doesn't have hemophilia as I'd always heard, nor did he retire because his "nervous stomach" couldn't take the stress of competition. The big virtue of the book is that it's written in a homey style that makes you feel as though Nelson is right there speaking to you in his Texas twang. It was written with assistance from his second wife, and it reads as though she must have been transcribing tapes. There is very little discussion of swing theory and no tips to help your game, but it's fascinating if you have an interest in what it took to make a living in professional golf in the 1930s and 1940s.It should be required reading for today's pampered pros who make more for one fifth-place finish than Nelson made in his entire career as one of the all-time greats. He comes across as an extremely decent, religious man that you would've liked to have known. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars An honest, compelling, literary accomplishmentfor more than just Hogan fans
As both an avid golfer, and Ben Hogan admirer, I was more than satisfied with this book. Once i turned the first page I couldn't put it down. The information shared on the life of who I consider to be the greates golfer ever is unparalleled. Although this will instantly become a cherished part of any Ben Hogan fan's book collection, anyone who enjoys American history, sports history, sports in general, and golf in particular, as well as those who like true stories of sucess against all odds, will enjoy this book. It's a well-written portrait capturing all the good and bad of Ben Hogan and his life, and there was plenty of both. Anyone who thinks they know anything about Ben Hogan the man owes it to themselves to read this book. As Arnold Palmer himself said of the book: "I thought I knew Ben Hogan pretty well, until this book came along...".If you were interested enough in this book to read the reviews, you should buy it. You will not regret doing so.

5-0 out of 5 stars Outstanding
I would greatly recommend this book. It is a very comprehensive study into the life of a true legend and is also a very incisive insight into America during the thirties and forties. In the course of reading about such an outstanding career the name Tiger Woods inevitably enters one's thoughts. Just how would Hogan have compared to Woods during the prime of his career. Woods continues his gallop into history but Hogan's name will always be the one who was responsible for taking golf out of the country clubs and into the municipal courses.

5-0 out of 5 stars The truth be known
An outstanding insight to the life and times of Mr. Hogan. So much was presented that never came to the public eye.And even though a discredit was given by one reviewer in his May 9, 2005 review, based on the fact that 10 birdies in an US Open on a par 74 course was not possible, this individual did not do his homework. The US Open was played on a par 74 course in Savannah, Georgia in the early 1930s.A great book, a wonderful revelation, a must read for those interested in golf history. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars She's Right - It Could Happen to You
This is an honest, funny, and sweet memoir of pregnancy and the first year as a parent. Brockenbrough takes us along on her journey as she lives the ups and downs of life as a new parent. It's sometimes funny, sometimes endearing, but always entertaining. Brockenbrough is not as outrageous as Jenny McCarthy, which is a good thing, because her book will appeal to everyone. It could be you in this book, for all intents and purposes, and reading someone else's first experience with parenthood is sure to arm a new mom with insights and hope.
1-0 out of 5 stars Absolutely without humor or insight and not well written
This book is NOT funny. It just isn't. Using the word "barf" a million times in a nonpun- not amusing. In fact the only time I laughed during the book was from a Rita Rudner quote. Rita Rudner- funny. The writing style is overly chatty dear diary. Annoying. I'm not interested in her dull life, only her pregnancy. I could get more insight talking to a random pregnant woman. It isn't even sweetly funny. I would love a good pregnancy book, I'm sick of the medical guides. But this isn't it. I welcome recommendations. PAss on this one. I fell asleep to it.

4-0 out of 5 stars Very cute.
You'll enjoy this book. It's like talking with a chatty woman about parenthood, pregnancy, etc. The segments on many topics make it easy to read quickly. Colorful and funny photos with comic-like humor.
