If you have plans for the day, do not begin reading this book. You will not be able to put it down! The author tells of her experiences caring for and learning to train Alaskan sled dogs to run in sled dog races. In the process, she introduces the reader to the winning sled dog team for the 2006 Iditarod. When the reader meets the winning team, they are just a group of engaging puppies. If you love puppies, Alaska, or the Iditarod, you will want to make the acquaintance of the charming author and read her delightful story.

5-0 out of 5 stars A midlife adventure, told with wit, spirit, and respect for the loyalty of man's (and woman's!) best friend
Running With Champions: A Midlife Journey On The Open Trail is the memoir of an ordinary Alaskan fisherwoman whose journey to see the finish of the 1,049-mile Iditarod Trail Sled Dog Race transformed her life forever. Observing the musher's devotion to their dogs and the strenuous demands for competing in an epic race, she began volunteering at checkpoints, became an apprentice to Iditarod champion Jeff King, and at last dared to mush her own dog team. A midlife adventure, told with wit, spirit, and respect for the loyalty of man's (and woman's!) best friend.
5-0 out of 5 stars Thoroughly entrancing
Wow, what an adventure! To take on the 1000 mile Iditarod across half of Alaska. Lisa Frederic has written the completely enjoyable, totally honest and surprisingly exciting story of how she entered the world of long-distance dogsledding. Her courage, endurance, her terrors, successes, accidents and setbacks, the camaraderie she found with other sledders, her love of Alaska and her incredible love of the dogs themselves comes through beautifully in this well-written book. I read it cover to cover in three nights, as I couldn't wait to read what was going to come next. Very inspiring, lots of fun & drama, and quite amusing. Highly recommended. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Her brother Sen. George Allen is a Vicious Bully
Haven't read this yet, but am getting it.This book isn't just about George Allen the football coach, but also about her brother George Allen the Republican senator. She details numerous examples of severe abuse by George Jr. against his siblings.Sen. Allen is being talked up as a Presidential hopeful, so I am reading this book to find out what a sick psychotic freak he really is (in addition to a notorious racist)
3-0 out of 5 stars Appalling, but very Republican

1-0 out of 5 stars Hypocritical
He clearly does not practice what he preaches. This book is just a facade for arrogance and self-serving attitude. He's probably looking for more money since he wasn't able to get it out of Philadelphia.Once a fan of his in his early Niners years, I have learn to not respect someone who does not respect the game, his teammates or anyone else he works with but himself. He's miles below the great players of this game in terms of character and sportsmanship.
4-0 out of 5 stars This book made me believe he was the victim, for awhile
Living as an Eagle fan in CA can be trying. When the Eagles signed TO all of my 49er friends said that it wouldn't last.TO's true colors would show sooner or later.I then read the book and encouraged them to do the same.TO does an excellent job of portraying himelf as the victim. He claims to need the money for his family and his future. My family could easily live off his paycheck now and well into the future. After reading this book, I was sold on TO and as an Eagle fan I thought he was the answer but then his true colors came out just as my 49er friends said they would. This book should be changed to fiction.

5-0 out of 5 stars ONE OF THE BEST
DICK ENBERG DOES A GREAT JOB IN THIS BOOK ABOUT HIS BROADCASTING CAREER. HIS RELATIONSHIPS WITH AL MCGUIRE, BILLY PACKER, MERLIN OLSEN, DON DRYSDALE AND MANY MORE ARE SOME OF THE HIGHLIGHTS IN THIS ENTERTAINING, INTERESTING AND WELL WRITTEN BOOK. HIS INSIGHTS ABOUT AL MCGUIRE IS ESPECIALLY NOTEWORTHY. I HAVE READ MANY SPORTS BOOKS BY BROADCASTERS, THIS IS ONE OF THE BEST I HAVE COME ACROSS. I ALWAYS RATED DICK ENBERG AS AN EXCELLENT SPORTSCASTER NO MATTER WHAT SPORT SUBJECT HE COVERED. ONE OF MY FAVORITES SHOWS HE HOSTED WAS SPORTS CHALLENGE (WHICH IS OCCASIONALLY ON ESPN CLASSIC CHANNEL). HIS COVERAGE OF COLLEGE BASKETBALL AND PRO FOOTBALL IS LEGEND. I HIGHLY RECOMMEND THIS FOR ALL SPORTS FANS. A GREAT READ.

5-0 out of 5 stars Oh My!is right on !!
For anyone who has had the privilege of listening to the smoothest, most knowledgeable, and "easiest to take" sports broadcaster of them all, this book goes down as a must read. I devoured it in two sittings (which is rare for me) and the only reason I put it down the first time was because I had to go to work!Warm, insightful recollections from a wonderful gentleman (and as you will discover, sometimes prankster!) who has seen it all, and has the unique ability to make every amazing story come to life in the friendly and cozy style that anyone who has followed his remarkable career over the years has come to know and appreciate.(Now I look forward to viewing the bonus dvd!) Mr. Enberg, thank you so much!! (and Oh My!)

5-0 out of 5 stars This Book, Like Enberg, Delivers!
Dick Enberg has always inspired trust in me.I always felt that he really cares about what he is doing, and that he is just as excited about the event he is broadcasting as any die hard fan watching or listening at home. He calls each game with such grace and class, that it is easy to take his talent for granted. This book allowed me to get a broader look at the man himself, and to find out that I have not misplaced my trust.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great motivating story that will inspire you do follow your dreams...
P.H. Mullen's Gold in the Water is a story that i first came into contact with a couple years ago.It is a fast paced true tale about average men trying to accomplish their goals.Reading the story over and over has helped me get through the hard times in and out of the pool. You don't need to be a swimmer to appreciate this story, but it does help.As I am in film school now, this is one story that can inspire more people then Remember the Titans with the Olympic power of Miracle.I encourage every athlete, Olympic fan, parent, or anyone who has a goal to accomplish to buy a copy of this book and one for their coach or mentor. It is a book to read over and over again.

5-0 out of 5 stars Gold in the Water - Extraordinary Story!
As an athlete and the parent of a swimmer who's "Gold" is making it to the NCAA Championships one day, I believe this book is one of the few that truly captures the highs and lows of the swimming world.P.H. Mullen brought tears to my eyes with his compassionate, yet brutaly realistic retelling of SCA swimmers going for the gold. This story helps you appreciate what happens everyday with every swimmer who truly dedicates themselves to being the best! The emotional and physical sacrifices made by swimmers all over the U.S. are not paralled in very many other sports. This book should be read by every athlete who has a dream!

5-0 out of 5 stars The Essence of Swimming
If you are not a swimmer already, you will want to be after completing this book.If you are a swimmer, then you will be thankful that someone has captured the essence of what those elite athletes at the other end of the pool do while you slog it out at 5 AM in the morning.

4-0 out of 5 stars Allen Iverson Fears No One
This is a book a bout a young man who is born into poverty but overcomes all challenges he is faced with. Allen practices all his life and is able to make it to the NBA.This book is great because it tells you about alot of basketball games that Allen played in. The author really gets you into the game it feels like you are in the fans watching the game. There was nothing about this book that I didnt like. A part that I really liked was when Allen said "This was a perfect ending to a day" I liked it because i could get excactly what he was saying. If you love basketball you should get this book as soon as possible!

4-0 out of 5 stars Allen Iverson: The Feared One
If you like sports books then this is the book for you.The book about Allen Iverson tells about a young man who grew up in the flums. He became a great basketball player, and retires and has a great life and family. This book attracted me because there was tons of basketball, and it's always interesting to find out about someone's life from when they grew up in a tough neighborhood. One thing that i didnt like about this book was that it talked to much about his college carrier instead of his more interesting pro carrier. Allen Iverson was obviously my favorite character because of what he had to go through in his though neighborhood with all that violence and drugs and how he stayed away from it and became one of the NBA's greatest players. My favorite line was when Iverson said "This is a great ending to a day!" He said that after he hit the winning buzzer beating shot on page 132. It just made me feel good inside because you know that anything could happen. If you like basketball then you will love this book! One question i have is that why did he do some of those foolish things as a child?I recomend this book to everyone because it teaches that if you try your hardest you can suceed.

5-0 out of 5 stars Allen Iverson Fear no One
This story is about a famous basketball player named Allen Iverson. He was born in Virginia Hampton. He lived in a bad neighborhood where people sold drugs and killed people for no reason.Iverson had two sisters. He was the oldest one. he went to Georgetown when he was in college and was a point guard. In college he was the mvp on his team and is the mvp on his team right now in the NBA.Allen Iverson plays for the Philidelphia Sixers. In the 2001-2002 Allstar game Iverson was the mvp.He led his team to the playoffs and then to the championship to play against the L.a. Lakers who was number one on the western cenference.Although the Sixers lost the championship Allen Iverson and the other players on the Sixers Played a heck of a game. The Lakers were impressed to see how good Allen Iverson was and how a little man like Iverson played with sush a big heart. Even though the Sixers had a chance to win the championship in a long time they still kept there head up and waited until next year.I recomend this book people who like Allen Iverson. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Positively Biased
It is a well known fact that DDP is a no talent in the wrestling business who got to the top by kissing Eric Bischoff's ass. They were next door neighbors for godsakes. DDP's book is full of crap. He never drew flies. His workrate sucked. He was over, but not to were he drew money. The book itself is bad. 400 someodd pages of his life. 200 of it on wrestling. He writes about how he was a bar manager for 200 pages. This was incredible dull. He puts himself over so much that it is tiring and he positively sucked. He was a product of the WCW Bischoff era and we now know why WCW went under. DDP you will never be in the Wrestling Observer Hall of Fame. And that's not a bad thing, that's a good thing.

1-0 out of 5 stars Why?
I guess everyone and their mother decided it was time to write their gripping life story. This poorly written book is yet another discredit to the wrestling business. This is a business where so many people have given pride back to the business and then Page Falkenberg produces a book written on a third grade level full of wrongful facts. 5-0 out of 5 stars Only a Jersey Girl understands a boy from Jersey

4-0 out of 5 stars A well balanced look at Joe Paterno and the politics of college football.
For most sports fans, the name Joe Paterno is a familiar one.The images conjured up by the name may vary...some see a living god while others see a need for change.Regardless of your views, this book is informative and well balanced. As a loyal Penn State fan, I found this book to be well written and objective. The writing style is not too stuffy or "textbook" like, yet the author is able to remain insightful as well as entertaining. This book focuses on the work of Penn State football coach Joe Paterno during the 2004 season; the bulk of the story is a tale of the ups and downs that took place during that season. However, there is also a great deal of exposition when it comes to the privilige, politics, and power of Division I college football. In some sections of the story, Penn State University and the town of State College, PA become a unique world where attitudes can change like the seasons. What I found to be the most informative was the description of Paterno's interactions with the media.
5-0 out of 5 stars Great subject matter makes a great book.
I have always said that if I had a son worthy of playing big-time college football, I'd send him to Penn State to play for Joe Paterno. My thoughts haven't changed a whip since reading this book. Michael O'Brien does a wonderful job in detailing the life and philosophy of one of the most colorful and downright good people to ever live.3-0 out of 5 stars Don't Buy This One if you Own Other Paterno Books
If I had bought this book first, I probably would have been happy with thebook. But as an owner of four other books relating to Coach Paterno Ifound this one to be a repeat of the other writings.I really learnednothing new from this book at all.Maybe I expected too much or maybePaterno's story has already been told. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Skywalker soars
David Thompson was a great basketball player in college and had a great start in his pro career.Unfortunately, David gave in to the lure of drugs and his career and life suffered.Somehow, through his belief in God and his love of family, David was able to eventually overcome his demons. His rebound was too late for his basketball career, but not too late to save his marriage.
5-0 out of 5 stars David Thompson: Skywalker
Enjoyed this look into the life of David Thompson, both the good, the bad the really bad and the good again. The chapter recalling the 1974 NC State/UCLA semi-final game was so detailed, it was like watching it all over again. Additionally, the book did not shy away from the dark side of David Thompson's life and although he may have not fulfilled his full professional basketball potential, it is gratifying to see his life is now at peace. Not just for hoops fans, but hoops fans will throughly enjoy !

4-0 out of 5 stars Skywalker comes down-to-earth...
The essence of David Thompson's impact on the NBA and it's fans is captured in the following memory...a playoff game in 1980 with Thompson's Denver Nuggets playing the Seattle Supersonics in the Seattle Kingdome...the game was in it's closing minutes and the outcome was no longer in doubt (Seattle had the game well in hand). Most TV viewers (especially those of us on the East Coast) had already undoubtedly turned off the TV, but I noticed that DT was still in the game. Telling myself to keep watching as Thompson may do something memorable, I kept my attention focused until with about 30 seconds remaining, DT had the ball at the top of the key. Faking left and driving right, he took off from just inside the dotted circle...cuffing the ball in his right hand (at 6' 4" his hands were too small to palm the ball), he sailed in and threw down a one-handed windmill tomahawk slam over two amazed Sonics that brought me and the remaining crowd in the Kingdome to it's feet. My mission then complete, I felt it was safe to then turn off the TV and go to bed.

I think Jack Walsh, and Marshall Cook have captured the heart and soul of Baseball's greatest players. Editorial Review

It seems somehow fitting that the first pass Peyton Manning, the $48million man, threw as a professional went for a touchdown. His father ArchieManning, in this team effort from two of football's more interestingquarterbacks, stresses that "My only hard rule [with his sons growing up] wasthat they finish what they start." Peyton, the All-American Phi Beta Kappagraduate of Tennessee, obviously listened to his All-American from Ole Missfather, whose strong right arm almost made the Saints competitive over 12seasons in New Orleans.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Best Autobiography I've Ever Read
This is an excellent book, written by Archie and Peyton Manning. It starts of with a really painful experience for Archie, and it goes through Archie's entire life and career, and it talks about the begining of Peyton's career and most of his childhood. I would recomend this book to anyone, and to everybody who loves the Manning family, like I do.

4-0 out of 5 stars A good read
I bought this book with skepticism but overall I liked it.I thought it was pretty truthful to the Manning legacy. The SEC's most famous bloodline's story is here.I recommend it as I do "A Tailgater's Guide To SEC Football" which also showcases the Mannings. ... Read more

Editorial Review

Frankly, this literary critic didn't expect Mick Foley's memoir of his life as Mankind (and his other wrestling personas, Cactus Jack and Dude Love) to hit No. 1 on Amazon.com's hardcover nonfiction bestseller list in its first literary bout. The cover is cluttered and confusing, and do we really need 500-plus pages of Foley's boasts? Yes. Foley gives his all for his calling, and he burns to tell his adventures. Take the famous tale of how he lost most of his ear (the bloody result is depicted in the 16-page color-photo section). It was in his 1994 bouts with Vader (Leon White): after getting a broken nose, a dislocated jaw, and 21 stitches in the first match, Foley did his "hangman" routine, wherein he catches his neck between the second and third ropes and spins them into a twist. "The end result is the illusion of a man being hanged by his neck while his body kicks and writhes in an attempt to get out... the man actually Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars The best wrestler/writer to come from the WWE

5-0 out of 5 stars Great book, pick it up when you have a chance!
Have a Nice Day! by Mick Foley is the best biography I have ever read.It is the story about a wrestler from the beginning of his career in the late 1980's through 1999 (when the book was published).I watched WWF wrestling during the "Attitude Era" (1996-2001) and really thought this book captures not only wrestling, but the man behind most of the most dangerous stunts during this era.
5-0 out of 5 stars Have A Nice Day:A Tale of Blood and Sweatsocks(Chris Soza)
I read this book originally in 2004 when I was a major fan of the WWF and I found this book to be one of the most entertaining reads I had ever picked up. I don't usually scream through books but Mick Foley's tale I couldn't put down as my thumbs turned the pages at a frantic pace. It's quite evident that this book alone is what got Mick Foley his opportunity to write for Random House and if you are a wrestling fan, this is impossible not to thoroughly enjoy. If you don't like wrestling I think that you would find Mr. Foley's writing style to be very entertaining, humorful, and you WILL feel for Mick as you learn how he got to climb the top of the wrestling world.

Editorial Review

One of baseball's more popular personalities, Joe Torre had to wait more than three decades as manager and player to finally reach his sport's Promised Land. His autobiography is an insider's account of how he led the New York Yankees to a championship, but it's more than that; it is also a heart-warming story of a close-knit Brooklyn family that ends in emotional triumph on and off the field. ... 1-0 out of 5 stars The Yankees
While I am a Yankee hater I admire Joe Torre.
4-0 out of 5 stars An Ordinary Book About an Extraordinary Accomplishment
I was born in the Bronx, not far from the Stadium. I'm a Yankee fan and a great fan of Joe Torre as their manager. Perhaps that's why I am so disappointed in this book. I expected much more than just an un-elaborated listing of what happened in Torre's life. It is as though the writers used Post-its on a large bulletin board on which to write a few spare sentences for each event and then arranged the Post-its to make a book. There isn't much art there. I compare it to Tony LaRussa's book, "Three Nights in August" which is beautifully written. LaRussa's writer makes you feel what he (LaRussa) was feeling. You are with him in the dugout, watching him when he is alone in a restaurant after a game, and enjoyinghis thoughts on baseball and its participants. On the other hand, even Torre's recital of the sadness in his childhood didn't really affect me. I suspect that part of the difference may lie in the differences in personality between the intellectual and passionate LaRussa and the working class Torre. And I was disappointed in "Chasing the Dream" even before I began reading it. Part of the fun when you open a baseball book to read it for the first time is to check the index to find your favorite players. You read the parts about them first and then go back and read the whole book. I checked for an index to read about Tino. No index. I see that other reviewers like this book a lot better than I do. I don't think the book is really bad - it's just too ordinary. It doesn't do justice to its subject. I gave it four stars instead of the three I really think it should get, because I like Torre.

5-0 out of 5 stars King of the Hill

3-0 out of 5 stars The story of one of golf's greats
This is the tale of Moe Norman, one of golf's greatest, but probably least well known heroes. Born into poverty, he used the extra time he had to turn himself into the greatest ball striker ever known. Overcoming financial problems, numerous brushes with the RCGA and other ruling bodies, he carved a place out for himself in golf history, and is now one of its immortal figures.

5-0 out of 5 stars Sir Walter, Out from the Shadow of St. Bob
This is a wonderful book, and an important American chronicle as well. Noted editor, journalist and golf writer Tom Clavin has gone where few have in the past, finally providing us with a stylish and authoritative biography of the great Walter Hagen, and of that man's lasting impact on the sport, both domestically and on the international stage. In doing so, Clavin has restored "The Haig" to his rightful place in the pantheon of golfing greats and as the true pioneer of American professional golf.
