5-0 out of 5 stars Alex Smith--A Modern Cinderfella Story
The story of Alex Smith and his meteoric rise to the number one NFL draft choice is a superbly inspiring story, written by a very talented young author. It is laced with humerous anecdotes and interesting insights into Smith's homelife and his first 20 years.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Read: Story of an Emerging Star
Wow! This is a compelling story, for young and old. Heather is an amazing storyteller, and does a masterful job of sharing the story of Alex Smith as he follows his dream of playing football in the NFL. It is full of fun and anecdotal excerpts from his childhood, and a detailed review of his march to an undefeated 2004 season, leading the University of Utah football team. I couldn't put it down, and read the whole book in one sitting (two weeks before his going first pick in the NFL draft). Now, I can't wait for the sequel covering his 49er years! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Dennis Byrd is a stud
this book kept me wanting more Dennis and Angela Byrd are truly inspirational people.I highly recomend this book to any one who has had any kind of setback in their life or career.Dennis never asked "whyme?" when he paralyzed playing football.Dennis used faith in himself and God to rise above it.

5-0 out of 5 stars The most inspirational book I have ever read.
I had a brush with paralysis when I was in training camp in my second year of University. The injury I suffered ended my days as a football player but I was fortunate enough to not be paralysed as a result of it. I can still, however, relate to many of the thoughts Dennis shares in his book. Hisstory is without a doubt, one of the most inspirational I have ever heardand I admire him for his courage. Nothing I have ever read has helped me toput my life in to perspective better than "Rise and Walk". Hisbook is among my favorites and I enjoy reading it more every time. I wouldrecomend it to anyone.

4-0 out of 5 stars A Good, Easy Read
If you know someone that is having a hard time adjusting to adverse circumstances get them to read this book. I have a newly adopted son that was having a hard time adjusting to his new family situation. He is not handicapped physically or mentally but the system he was in handicapped him emotionally giving him an entitlement mentality. I read the book in one sitting and then gave it to my son to read. For the last two years I have been trying to find a way to help him see that with hard work and dedication he can become anything that he wants to be. With him being a huge football fan, this book was just the ticket to help show him that he is not the only one that has had it tough. Not only will you enjoy the message of this book, so will your family and friends that need to know someone else has beat the odds and made it, inspite of and because of their difficulties and handi-caps. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Perspective
This is one of the best books one can find about John Elway.Sure, it misses much of the autobiographical details, but it gets down to business quite well, distilling John's football life into its essential components. Its strength arises from diversity of perspective. Not only do you hear Mike Shannahan's memories and opinions, but also Dan Reeve's and the words have a healing effect for us long term fans.Likewise, hearing not only from key Bronco team mates but also from his rivals gives one the complete story.

5-0 out of 5 stars Was a birthday present
I got this book from my wife as a birthday present, and immediately sat down and read it cover to cover. I knew a lot ofthe info in the book already, having been a Bronco fan since 1972, but it did refresh a lot of old (and somewhat painful) memories. I feel this book is a "must have" for any Bronco/Elway fan.

4-0 out of 5 stars good keepsake

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Book
Wow...what a book and story by Josh Heupel. He is truly an outstanding young man with his head on straight.A must read for all, even if you are not from Oklahoma.I don't live in Oklahoma and just heard about the book.

3-0 out of 5 stars The story of an extraordinary young man
Josh Heupel is a cut above your average athlete, not in terms of physical ability, but in hard work, dedication, and faith. He was the biggest key (along with Coach Bob Stoops and his staff) to the resurrection of the Oklahoma Sooner football program to national glory. As a diehard Sooner fan, I found this a very enjoyable read. As a Christian, I found it inspirational. Although Josh is listed as the author, it's clear that most of this book was written by his collaborator, who interviewed friends and family to get the full picture of this remarkable young man. There are a few chapters penned by Heupel, including a message he gave at church the Sunday morning following the Big 12 Championship game. The last section details each game of the Sooners championship run, which admittedly will probably only be of interest to Sooner fans (me!) I would like to have seen Josh talk more about the day-to-day experiences, the interaction with teammates and coaches, that type of thing. Maybe it will be up to someone else to write that book. I recommend this book for young people, Oklahoma Sooner fans, and Miami Dolphin fans (the Dolphins drafted him in the sixth round, and if they read this, they'll have no doubt that Heupel will be a great player for them in the NFL). Josh Heupel will be a success in whatever he does, and this book shows you why.

5-0 out of 5 stars Heupel is first class all the way
This book will be treasured by Sooner Fans forever. We are very lucky to have had such a great guy lead our team to the NC.Josh is such a wonderful guy and a great leader.Seeing the pictures in the book brought back great memories. This book is a MUST HAVE for any Sooner fan. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Nitschke is Football
Ray Nitschke is a symbol of a football era that has passed. He played the game for enjoyment not for money.Unlike current players, he was grateful to the fans and never passes up an autograph seeker.Truly, there will never be another Ray Nitschke.5-0 out of 5 stars A Great Book about a Great Man
My brother got to meet Ray in San Diego at the Super Bowl in 98'. His account of the meeting and of course an autograph is totally in line with Ed Gruver's account of this fine human being. In my opinion, Ray exemplifies everything that was great about the NFL and the great Packer teams in the early years of Pro Football.A great warrior on Sunday and gentle giant off the field. Kids these days could learn alot from his example of committment, hard work, dedication and sense of duty to the fans and people in general.A must have for Packer Fans and fans of Pro Football.

5-0 out of 5 stars An inspiring account of the life of a dedicated game player
Nitschke is the first biography of accomplished professional football player Ray Nitschke (1936-1998), who won the Green Bay Packers five NFL titles and the first two Super Bowls. Constructed from thorough research and dozens of interviews by biographer Edward Gruver, Nischke is the impressive portrait of a courageous man who lost both his parents at age 13, played a legendary championship "Ice Bowl" game in sub-zero weather, was inducted into the Pro Football hall of fame in 1978, and earned lasting memorials and tributes after his unfortunate death from a heart attack. Nitschke provides the reader with an inspiring account of the life of a dedicated game player and is "must" reading for Packer fans in general, and those who remember Ray Nitschke's performances on the field in particular. ... Totally amazing book. My Wife & I were season ticket holders from day one of the Milwaukee Mustangs (3rd row at the 5 yard line) and we were in attendance at both games.
5-0 out of 5 stars A new perspective
People often wonder what it would be like to live life over again - what they might change if they knew what they know now.I used to think that maybe I could have been more of an athlete and maybe a football player...but this book made me happy to be where I am, which is in the stands, where I belong. This book provides you a fabulous firsthand look at the life of a football player from inside the locker room and on the field. It's sometimes humorous, sometimes serious, but very entertaining the whole way through.Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Pittsburgh's Finest
Myron is unquestionably the king of Pgh. Reading this book brought back a ton of fond memories from when I lived in the 'Burg. I highly recommend to anyone who has Pgh ties or is at all familiar with Myron.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Touchdown!
To grow up in Pittsburgh during the 1970s a Steeler fan is to grow up loving Myron Cope and this book is a great example of why we love Myron. It is Cope at his most honest and revealing. He does not portray himself as something he is not, but as a flawed man who has worked hard and lived a great life. Of course there are the terrific tales of the Steelers' teams that Cope has covered from the broadcast booth and the characters that have populated them. Any Steelers fan will enjoy this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Myron's the Man
Double Yoi is the one of the best books that I have ever read. It is truely an entertaining read. It is a well written biographical look at Myron Cope's career in journalism and broadcasting as well as a combination of some of his favorite anecdotes. Any one who loves Myron Cope should read this book as well as those who hate him. I think that they will find a new appreciation for the Pittsburgh Icon. Cope also threw in some criticisms of things and people he doesn't really care for but he does this in a classy way.I am a huge Steeler fan but I don't think that one needs to be to enjoy this book. Grambling State's Eddie Robinson started coaching college football when FDR was in the White House and didn't stop until Bill Clinton's second term. Along the way, he racked up 408 victories, but his real legacy isn't in the stats. A black man coaching black athletes in the Deep South for 57 seasons, Robinson witnessed and took part in amazing changes in society and in his sport, battling prejudice and hatred to earn respect for himself and opportunity for his players. 5-0 out of 5 stars Outstanding Autobiography!!
Eddie Robinson is truly one of the greatest pioneers in the history of athletics. The way he transformed a football program at a little known (if not unknown at the time) black college in the piney woods of north Louisiana, into a program of both national and international notoriety, is a true testament to his greatness. It is amazing to see what this man has overcome and how he has perservered throughout his 56-year coaching stint. With 408 victories under his belt, he is the all-time winningest coach in college football history at any level. He taught his players how to be champions both on and off the field. As a Grambling State University alumnus, and former Grambling Sports Broadcaster, I was fortunate to witness, first hand, what a class act Coach Robinson is. He transcends the word "committment".This autobiography takes you on a journey of overcoming obstacles on the road to success.I highly recommend this book to everyone, not just athletes, who want to understand what it means to perservere!

5-0 out of 5 stars wonderful autobiography
I'm a big fan of football, so of course i wanted to read, this book aboutGrambling's great coach. i'm a big fan of grambling except of course whenthey play Jackson state, or Alcorn. After reading the book, i found EddieRobinson, to be a wonderful person who cared so much for his team, and hiscoaches. I felt bad for robinson when i read that a divison 1 school nevereven contacted him about a job, but what I liked best of all about thisbook, was he and his wife's Doris love for one another.

As a whole i thought this book was very good.Im not a big reader but i enjoy reading on sports history, and who better than the most famous coach in the NFL.It does a very good good on keeping you entertained. In the start of the book it kind of talks about his life when he was in highschool. It shows that he was very intrested in sports at a young age.His highschool was on the the best highschools around in football. Then it tells some great stories about when he was in college and then of course, tells about some of his best NFL games when he coached for the Packers.I really thought this was well written and it really kept me intrested through out the entire book. Then also another nest thing is in the back of the book it shows a bunch or stats that are just cool to look at.If you are a sports fan of any type, or just intresed in Vince Lombardi, then i really recommend this book. ...
