4-0 out of 5 stars Good Synopsis of Joe Paterno and College Football
I hesitated picking up this book because even though it was published only one year ago, it is arguably outdated since Penn State football finally bounced back and had a very good year. That said, I am glad I read it because the book goes beyond the marketed "A Season with Penn State" storyline and provides a very good historical synopsis of Joe Paterno and his role in the history of college football.
5-0 out of 5 stars fair and balanced
ok, get past the fact that this is a book written by a sports writer, and understand there will be one or two malaprops and one or two missed typos.it's actually fairly well written.more importantly, it gives us something rather unusual:an even-handed look at joe paterno, and an even-handed retrospective of the program he has created.it's hard to find- so often we see bland - and blind- praise; other times, we see negative press from those with the opposite agenda.this book gets it right, and it's a must-read for anyone who considers himself a fan of penn state football.

5-0 out of 5 stars An Inspiration of Passion and Leadership
This is a must read for anyone interested in understanding what leadership is all about. In a profession where winning is everything and a world where loyality and tradition are no longer valued, this book chronicles what happens to a highly successful Division 1A football coach when he is no longer winning games.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Heart Warming Story about a Wonderful Man
This is one of the most wonderful books that I have ever read.5-0 out of 5 stars Great book aboutvery Special Person
I can't believe nobody reviewed this book so I'll take a crack at it. Brook Berringer was one of the greatest Nebraska quarterbacks ever and he was really considered a back up. Sadly his life was cut short in an airplane accident. I haven't talked to anyone here in Nebraska that doesnt know where they were when they heard, he had that much of an impact on everyone. The book does talk about his football days but I think more importantly it shows how he came to find God and how his faith helped him through trying times. It is a very moving book and it is very inspirational, it will bring a smile to your face and make your eyes well up in tears. I hope you'll read this book if only to learn how good of a man he was and maybe you'll find a little comfort in knowing God will always be there when you are ready to accept him. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Keep it Simple
In this book, Terry Bradshaw recyles some of his stories from his book/audio "It's only a Game." The book is simple and repetitive but still contains some of the Bradshaw humor. Itincorporates what he says when giving his motivational speeches at business functions. I enjoyed it for light recreational reading, but probably would not have purchased it if it hadn't been discounted.

5-0 out of 5 stars I Needed Something To Read
I worked over-night at an amusement park for security. For 6 hours a night, I would read.I bought about every book in the store that existed, so I had to settle for this one.I hate Terry Bradshaw.
4-0 out of 5 stars Keep it Real
"We are all searching for the same thing: a hand to hold and heart to understand...Keep it simple. Smile a lot. Be nice to other people.... Life is a joy. (8)" This quote pretty much sums up the attitude of Terry Bradshaw's Keep it Real.

5-0 out of 5 stars A GOOD READ
THIS IS A COLLECTION OF SHORT STORIES ASKING VARIOUS HALL OF FAMERS TO DESCRIBE THEIR GREATEST MOMENTS IN THEIR CAREERS. THE LIST OF PLAYERS INCLUDES TERRY BRADSHAW, JACK HAM, Y A TITTLE, GALE SAYERS AND MANY MORE. THE AUTHOR DOES A VERY GOOD JOB MAKING THIS A MUST READ. ONE OF THE MOST COMPELLING THINGS I LIKE ABOUT THIS WAS THE MANY PLAYERS FROM DIFFERENT ERAS. A GREAT COLLECTION OF INTERVIEWS AND STORIES. VERY RECOMMENDED.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great Players - Great Memories
McCullough had an interesting concept for this book.He picked great professional football players (Hall of Famers) from each era of the game and asked them to tell about their greatest day in professional as well as college football. In addition, he asked them about their greatest opponent and their greatest teammate. All in all, twenty-nine of football's greatest were interviewed. It is a group of players sure to bring back fond memories of great players, great teams, and great games.Included among those interviewed are Bart Starr, Terry Bradshaw, Chuck Bednarik, Raymond Berry, Frank Gifford, Lawrence Taylor, and Y.A. Tittle.Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars A PLEASANT JOURNEY THROUGH ROCKNE'S LIFE
Michael Steele has been doing books on Notre Dame football for many years. Some, like Rockne: A Bio-Bibliography (1983) are very detailed, but most, especially this book, are more in the coffee table genre. But that's o.k.because Steele is modest about his books, and makes no special claims forthem.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars This is a Great Book
This book is good for anyone whether you are a football fan or not.I personally am a football fan, and I would especially recommend this book for those football fans out there. This book is inspirational and well documented. It is also at a good price now, and it is a quick read.

4-0 out of 5 stars Compelling, but to drawn out
I'll be honest. The book compelled me for the most part. I couldn't put it down for the most part. I truly felt pain for poor Adam, and can't imagine going through anything like this story and still bouncing back. The only complaint I have is the book is too drawn out towards the end. Pehaps it was written to soon, perhaps the author felt the need to repeat himself 3 or 4 times. Still, once you get past this, the book is a good read and an amazing story. I would recommend it to anyone that wants to be inspired. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars The Rocky of the NFL
This book is like an NFL Rocky type story.Except there are 10 different Rocky's that are the focus of this book in the form of football players. Not to say that it is a ripoff in anyway. It's a book that truly stands on it's own.The author seems to be very talented. His first? Are you kidding me?Sometimes I laughed and sometimes I felt sad for them.Especially knowing that all this really happened to real people makes the impact even stronger.Don't let it's setting of it being preseason football make you think it's boring. It's a book of hope, determination, preserverance, and the cold reality of life that we all have to face. This book was so good it's compelled me to write my first review for Amazon.Congratulations Woody F. and I'm looking for your next book!

5-0 out of 5 stars What every NFL fan wants to know
This book is precisely what every NFL fan wants to know about what it takes to make a professional football team's roster.Woody does an excellent job at grabing your attention within the very first pages and holding it to the very end.If you are a fan of the NFL, this is a must read and Woody will have you turning each page anxiously awaiting the fates of the players struggling to make the Saints team. This book is masterfully written and you will find yourself rooting for the underdogs.Woody is a gifted story teller and makes you feel like you are sitting along side him at the Saints training camp.At times, I was rooting for Woody himself as he describes the difficulties the media encounters from the Saints organization during training camp.I highly recommend this book and only hope Woody has his second book in the works.

4-0 out of 5 stars Cowboy, Up
For Dat Nguyen, "quit" is the worst of the four letter words. He didn't take rejection well, just kept getting right in the face of the bigots. And when Becky Foster, the prettiest girl in town, excused herself from the vertigo dancefloor, saying she had to use the bathroom, and then left the club entirely, well, that just made Dat more interested in the cute, perky winner who went home, and boasted to her girlfriends, "I just danced with the biggest Chinese boy you've ever seen!"
4-0 out of 5 stars Interesting Life Story
I received a signed copy of this book for free after seeing him speak for my high school. The novel was written very well, and the story was very interesting. It starts from before he was born, when his parents fled war-torn Vietnam, to his glory days with Texas A&M and the Dallas Cowboys. With his career finally over, this is a good note for him to leave on. As a casual fan, I thouroughly enjoyed this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Story, Great Guy
I've been following Dat's career since his college days, not because I'm an Aggie, but because I'm Asian American (who also happens to be a lifelong Cowboys fan). Watching him play and seeing him accumulate tackles has been thrilling. But as he notes in this book, he has never granted many interviews, so I've always wanted to know more about his life story, his family, and how he came to be an exceptional football player. So for me, this book really delivers. The story is really quite an incredible tale of courage, determination, tragedies, and triumphs big and small. It's also written very well in terms of structure, clever turns of phrase, and the balance between detail and movement. I tip my hat to Dat, Rusty Burson, and even to Darren Woodson, who contributed a very eloquent and insightful foreword. I believe that Dat's sense of humor (pretty goofy), decency, candor, and passion really came through consistently throughout the book. After finishing it, I felt glad to have rooted for such an admirable and giving individual with such an interesting tale to tell. Now I'm really curious what he's going to do with the rest of his wonderful life. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent summary of #7's NFL life and career
This book is a great read for Bronco and Elway fans of any age.Itchronicles the life of John Elway from the time he was a child, throughcollege and his joining of the Broncos, to his victory against the GreenBay Packers in Super Bowl XXXII.Black and white pictures are includedwith each chapter, and the center section 14 pages of color photos, aswell. The author (Clay Lattimer) is a sports writer for the Rocky MountainNews, and he also draws on Sports Illustrated, Becket Football Monthly, andeven Newsweek, as well as several other sports sources, so he packs a lotof information, dates, and statistics into each chapter. He also packs alot of superfluous detail, too -- the writing meanders a bit and doesn'talways stay on focus. But hey -- if you're an Elway fan (like me), whocares? The book is fun to read even in the places where it goes off topic. If there was such a thing as a "definitive" biography of anElway, this would probably be it.If you're an Elway fan, get this bookand enjoy it!

5-0 out of 5 stars A must for the Elway fan
John Elway: Armed and Dangerous, by Clay Latimer, is a must for the John Elway and Denver Bronco fans.It is an easy to read book on Elway's career and personal life filled with quotes from players and unknown stories about other football greats. It sometimes drags a little as it gets off the subject quite a bit. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars I love Haley!
I read the book when it was first released and actually I just "happened" upon it. I was and am still the BIGGEST Charles Haley fan and I was just looking to get any memorablia that I could. I thoughtthe book was great because it explained why he played so hard and why hefelt the way he did about things going on in the NFL. I think that he is agreat player and he is just misunderstood by players, coaches and fansalike. If you read the book then you would gain more insight on him and histhinking. And being one of his biggest fans, I guess that I am a bit biasedon this review. But he was very frank and candid in his portrayal of theNFL. He didn't sugarcoat anything. Also it showed how committed he was toplaying the sport and committed to his personal life as well. The onlything that could have changed was some of the foul language but again Ithink that that was just him being Charles Haley. Anyone knowing anythingabout him knows that he does not hold his tongue, not even on livetelevision. So you would have to expect that from his writing. I would lovefor him to read this so he will know that he has one devoted fan in me!

4-0 out of 5 stars A great book for the true Dallas fans!
Haley expresses his views (openly) on everything from racism in the NFL tothe physical and emotional toll the game takes on its players. He doesn'thold anything back and just tells it how it is. Not many players get toplay for two great teams (like the Dallas Cowboys and the San Francisco49ers) and win Super Bowls with each. He's a legendary player and thatexplains why he's the only man to earn five Super Bowl rings. This is avery well-written book and a great one for the true Dallas fans!

4-0 out of 5 stars Very blunt, but very good.
I enjoyed Charles Haley's book very much.He talks VERY openly about the NFL and the pressures put on every player.Pressure from the coaches, the media, and the players themselves. Not to mention the disregard many players show for their own health to keep playing, and the drugs they take to do so.I enjoyed Charles' style very much. Some may find it offensive, but if you expected anything different from him what were you thinking when you bought the book? ... 5-0 out of 5 stars A GOTTA HAVE
We bought this for my brother for Christmas, but I have to admit several of the biographies were read before it was wrapped. My brother is a die hard cowboy fan.He loved reading the short biographies of where some of the OLD DAYS and NEW players are now.The only thing I wish is that there had been a short biography for TOM LANDRY because to me he is the HEART of the Cowboys.

5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful book
This book was an awesome read. Many interesting short stories about lots of MY childhood heroes. The book took me back in time and also let me catch up on what has happened to so many of the players I grew up with. The successes and failures, the happy stories and the sad. Stories from Hollywood Henderson, Mike Clark, Harvey Martin, Ralph Neely, Roger Staubach, and many more. It is a MUST read for any fan of the Dallas Cowboys!!

5-0 out of 5 stars The Good, The Bad and the Ugly of the Boys!
This has to be the best biological collection of any sports team ever! My father, my brother, my friend, my mother and I- we all thoroughly enjoyed this book. My family often corresponds by way of sharing book reviews and this one quickly made it through the family. My father loved reliving all of his favorite players, my brother read it and loves debating with my father, my friend is just so happy that he can now understand the comparisons given during the telecasts of games today, but my mother and I had the most fun trying to quiz each other.Honestly, a great read for the sports enthusiasts and those crazy few inmy family who want to discuss sports in anthropological terms. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Must Have....
If you are a true fan of Ohio State or Michigan, this book is a must have and a very good read.Unbelievable attention to detail in this book as the author really got inside each and every game in the 10 year war.I have been to THE GAME in person 3 times and the intensity of the crowd and teams exhibited today was all set up by the great rivalry of the 70's between Bo and Woody. ...
