4-0 out of 5 stars Joe Namath : A Life of Extremes
Joe Namath-a man that conjures an image that few people in this world could ever match. Although this book tends to be a bit of a long read and gossipy at times, it provides some real insight into the life and legend of a hero to many and a bad influence to others. Mark Kriegel does a thorough job in helping us visualize the complexities of a man who always seems to live a life of extremes.
5-0 out of 5 stars A Super Read On A Pop Titan
Take a 1960s pop icon who refuses to cooperate with an author wanting to write a complete picture of his life; that is as long as a nice check isn't cut so he can share stories on the media creation, not the real person. Then have friends of the pop icon clam up when word gets out the the biography will be "unauthorized."
5-0 out of 5 stars One of the best sport bios ever
This is a very interesting book and it takes you through Joe's entire life up to and past his Suzy Kolber interview.Few sports biographies do that.Like Paul Hornung Joe serves as an alter ego for guys who wish they could have had Joe's life in their younger days.I wish that there would have been more pictures of Joe's serious girl friends (there were several), as only Susie Storm & his wife Deborah are pictured in the book.It would have been nice if they were some pictures of where Joe had lived.

4-0 out of 5 stars Packs a punch, but poorly written
I was wandering around a Gold Beach, Oregon book store last week and just happened to pick up Deion Sanders' book.I vaguely knew who he was.For some strange reason, I purchased it.Although, riddled with grammatical and spelling errors, I found his message very compelling.I am just new to the world of Jesus and have had many folks in my life talk to me about living a Christian life, but I have to say that Deion's book really TALKED to me about this issue.More than anyone else.He just broke it down in plain terms and related his story in a way that spoke to me loud and clear. Thanks Deion.

4-0 out of 5 stars A GOOD READ BUT WANTED MORE
I FOUND THIS BOOK TO BE QUITE INTERESTING AND WRITTEN WITH HONESTY. DEION HAS ALWAYS BEEN FLASHY AND FLAMBOYANT. HE PRESENTED HIMSELF AS BEING THIS WAY ALL THE TIME. HIS "PRIME TIME" PERSONALITY IS NOT WHAT I CONSIDER TO BE A MODEL CITIZEN ON HOW TO PRESENT YOURSELF. HE SAYS UNDERNEATH HE IS A CHRISTIAN AND HUMBLE, I HOPE HE IS. I HAD HOPED HE WOULD HAVE GIVEN MORE DETAIL TO HIS CAREER. THIS IS WORTH READING AND ENJOYABLE. KEEP UP THE GOOD WORK DEION AND PLEASE WRITE ANOTHER BOOK WITH MORE DETAIL AND INSIGHT INTO HOW TO LIVE LIFE.

3-0 out of 5 stars Prime Time's Years of Slime Time
Let me start off by saying I like Deion Sanders, otherwise I never would have purchased his book. And I admire the fact that the man has come a LONG way and overcome many obstacles to accept Christ into his life.Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Disappointed
The book was written by a Spurrier fan who told me nothing new about the great coach. It was 204 pages long and the author did not get to Spurrier's Florida coaching exploits until page 143.His legendary status as a coach BEGAN atFlorida.Spurrier's Gator coaching accomplishments made him the star that he is today and I was hoping to get a detailed look at HOW he was so successful at Florida. I was left wanting SO much more.It was a good look at his younger days growing up and as a player in college and the NFL.It also explored his days as a small time college coach, but the contents regarding his tenure at Florida was rather pitiful. Still, a must read for any Gator or Spurrier fan, but not a real complete work. This, I hope, will NOT be considered THE definitive Spurrier biography when it is all said and done.

5-0 out of 5 stars One of the best sports bios I've ever read
With all the media buzz about this book, I was afraid it wouldn't live up to the hype, but I gotta admit that it's one very good book. Chastain really gets into the mind and heart of a remarkable and complex man. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars A Season to Fulfil a Dream
The one thing that Jonathan A. Gottschall, who reviewed Dream Season, and I agree on is that Cowser did point out the many different aspects of sociology of those that play the game of football. Even though Cowser was a professor, it did not stop him from wanting to fulfill his dream. Cowser brings to life the brutality and violence of the game. In the chapter "Building the Beast," Bob Cowser even went as far as to describe his own fears on the field and what others thought of him.The one idea that helps me understand a guy and his sport is truly pointed out in Bob Cowser's book. Men will do about anything to complete a dream or continue a dream. The men that Cowser talks about can be viewed as those that he looked up to and hoped to gain their respect in the game.
5-0 out of 5 stars A great book about life and football
For anyone who played the game and had it end way too early, or for anyone who ever had a crazy idea but was hesitant to act upon it, this is your book.
5-0 out of 5 stars A Love Poem to Football
There is a lot to recommend in this book, which chronicles the stint of a creative writing professor (with soft "poet hands"), playing the manliest of positions (defensive and offensive line), in the manliest of games, for the nation's oldest semi-professional football team.Cowser writes with welcome simplicity and gripping forward momentum.I sat down with the book at 5:30 PM and hardly lifted my nose until, at 9:30 PM, I had read it straight through. It is not only the kind of book you CAN read in four hours, it is the kind that you WILL read in four hours-it keeps you turning pages.

3-0 out of 5 stars A Good Biography, But Nothing New
Those interested in reading about former Green Bay Packers' quarterback Bart Starr for the first time will find this to be an interesting biography. However, if you have read previous books on the Packers such as Jerry Kramer's "Instant Replay" and David Maraniss's definitive biography on Vince Lombardi entitled "When Pride Still Mattered", you will not find anything new here.Author David Claerbaut relies heavily on Maraniss's book on Lombardi in addition to having a similar title "When Leadership Mattered."Claerbaut does delve into Starr's nine years as the coach of the Packers in addition to Starr's son, Brett, who suffered from drug addiction. As far as Starr's years as a player for the Packers is concerned what this book has to offer can be found in several other books on the team. However, if you have not read a previous book on Bart Starr or the Packers of the 1960's then you will enjoy this book. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars A QB for History
Calling all LSU, SF 49er, and NY Giants fans. This book is a fun read, and leaves one with the feeling of having intimately known one of the greatest quarterbacks to ever wear a football uniform. As opposed to many sports books, the author's vantage point allows her to tell the story of this football icon with refreshing sensitivity. The author, through her lively descriptions, tells the story of how from his humble beginnings in East Texas, Y.A. Tittle rose to become the toast of New York, and a member of the NFL Hall of Fame.4-0 out of 5 stars THE BALD EAGLE SOARS
I LIKED SEVERAL THINGS IN THIS BOOK. I ALSO DISLIKED A FEW THINGS IN THIS BOOK. IT WAS INTERESTING WHEN IT STAYED FOCUSED ON THE CAREER AND LIFE OF Y.A. HIS EXPERIENCES WITH THE COLTS, 49ERS AND GIANTS IS EXCEPTIONALLY WELL DONE. THE BOOK IS WRITTEN BY HIS DAUGHTER WHO DOES A GOOD JOB OVERALL. BUT SHE RAMBLES ON AND ON ABOUT SOME BORING CHILDHOOD MEMORIES AND NEVER REALLY DOES A GOOD JOB OF TELLING US WHAT KIND OF PERSON AND FATHER TITTLE IS. SHE TRIES TO BE TO TOO DEATILED AND CREATIVE DESCRIBING THINGS OF MINOR IMPORTANCE. BUT SHE IS TALENTED AND VERY SWEET. I DONT WANT TO BE TOO HARD ON THIS BOOK. I RECOMMEND IT FOR ALL GIANT FANS AND FANS WHO WANT TO READ ABOUT A GREAT QUARTERBACK. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Exceptional Story About University Life and Top-Level Athletics
When I joined the University of Georgia faculty in 1969, I kept hearing about Vince Dooley, the university's very young head football coach. The previous year, he had led the team to the Southeastern Conference Championship, resulting in a Sugar Bowl bid.Clearly, Dooley had assumed leadership of a nearly defunct football program and restored a degree of glory quickly.
4-0 out of 5 stars Candid, but Classy
Good book by a good man who happens to also be an outstandingfootball coach...Vince Dooley has always been a classy man and this book follows that mode...It is written in keeping with his personality. While it is candid and nothing is held back---see his comments on his favorite players, etc.---it is written and presented in a classy, courteous style, the style of a Southern Gentleman who loved football, was a part of football, an integral part of the Southeastern Conference for more than 50 years, yet had a vision and perspective beyond football....parts on his disagreements with Georgia President Michael Adams should be especially revealing to the reader in terms of campus politics, the most vicious politics of all...even here, Dooley, while being candid, handles the "controversy" in a genteel manner. Tony Barnhart's deft touch is present, but never obvious...He guided and directed--coached--Vince Dooley well...A valuable book to the history of southern football, Georgia football in particular. Anyfan of SEC Football will enjoy it. ... Read more
