5-0 out of 5 stars Inspiring!!
Remember This Titan, is a wonderful accounting of Bill Yoast's life, ups and downs, the expected and the unexpected. It is the story of a man who LIVED decency long before it was fashionable. The success of the team, both on the field and in their interpersonal relationships, was nurtured by the presence of this fine teacher, leader and coach. In a time when schools go out of their way to emphasize that character counts, this is a fine, enjoyable book to share with the children/students in your life. There are so many valuable lessons, from Mary's impact on Coach Yoast to the profound influence of Raymond Tetfeller on Yoast's young life. This book is beautifully written. It flows with astonishing honesty from humor to heart-wrenching pain.Sullivan has an obvious knowledge, understanding and respect for Coach Yoast. As if all of the above isn't enough, there are action plans and lists of invaluable facts in the back.Remember This Titan is a great read which has had a lasting impact on me.p.s.I had a student at the end of the year say, "Hey, Ms. Stewart are YOU reading a football book, cool!"Enjoy.
5-0 out of 5 stars Green Mountain Football Loves This Titan
"Remember This Titan" is an excellent story of an American hero. In a time when personal glory is mainstream, Bill Yoast was not only an inspiration to a community but to the nation as well.Absorbing every word of a simply beautiful story of a no-nonsense man, I learned that, "In navigating life, the best lessons are learned when the riding gets rough".Not only do I believe in the philosophy of life according to Coach Yoast but our entire youth organization and metro area are looking forward to having Mr. Sullivan and Coach Yoast motivate our young men for our 2006 football season.I look forward to meeting Coach Bill Yoast and Steve Sullivan in August, (www.greenmountainfootball.org) and showing them that the TITAN theory exists in Colorado. Steve Sullivan along with Bill Yoast are truly the cornerstone of INSPIRATION.

5-0 out of 5 stars This book is a winner!!

3-0 out of 5 stars Is it accurate?
As a Bears season ticket holder and lifelong fan who attended the same grade school (St. Emily's in Mt. Prospect, IL) as the McCaskey children and grew up their neighborhood, I was really looking forward to reading this book. Then, right on page 3 it says the McCaskeys lived in Arlington Heights when they actually lived in Des Plaines, and I am left wondering how many other inaccuracies this book contains. It seems very anti McCaskey.

5-0 out of 5 stars Just a marvelous biography
Pros: Everything you should know about Papa Bear (including everything the McCaskeys have spent years trying to hide from you)
5-0 out of 5 stars King of the Grizzlies
This is one of two books which I have read recently, the other being Let Me Tell You a Story: A Lifetime in the Game, John Feinstein's account of his close association with Arnold ("Red") Auerbach. Both Halas and Auerbach were obviously great coaches but also outstanding CEOs, each building a successful and profitable franchise while playing a key role in a multi-billion dollar professional organization. In this instance, the National Football League. Born and raised in Chicago, I was especially interested in what seems to be the definitive biography of Halas, the longtime owner and coach of that city's NFL team, Duh Bears. It must have taken someone with both his most attractive qualities (e.g. vision, generosity, perseverance, self-confidence) and his most unattractive qualities (e.g. duplicity, arrogance, stubbornness, and -- at times -- paranoia) to accomplish what he did...which was indeed a great deal.

Editorial Review

How good a coach was Knute Rockne? It hardly matters. Killed in a plane crash at the height of his fame, his 1931 death was dubbed "a national disaster" by President Hoover, and his fable was forever set as a leader of men and the father of the Fighting Irish. Still, this son of Norwegian immigrants was good enough to have deserved Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Brings the legend to life...
My ole man went to Notre Dame... so I've been steeped in the rich legacy of Fightin' Irish Football. This book is by far one of the better books on Notre Dame football in its heyday under Knute Rockne who forged that legacy. The team that brought us the forward pass left a rich history worth examing. This book captures the essence of Rockne, his leadership style, his character and his ambition to excel.

4-0 out of 5 stars An Olympian god comes closer to human.
While acknowleging the legends surrounding one of the greatest coaches in any sport anywhere, but not attempting to pass them off as fact, Ray Robinson does not stoke the inspirational fires of the mythological demigodKnute Rockne.Still and all, we see Rockne as he developed from a boygrowing up in Chicago to the young man at Notre Dame eventually becomingthe coach who, in turn, became larger than life.4-0 out of 5 stars Stirring football stories & insights into the life & times
The most enjoyable sports book I've read since, well, "Stirring Football Stories", this book gives the reader not only such favorite moments in the history of the game as the winning forward pass (Dorais toRockne, against Army), the Gipper, the Four Horsemen, and back-to-backundefeated seasons, but insights into the life and times of Notre Dame'slegendary coach. Rockne championed & embodied the immigrant strugglefor a place in the sun - the "fighting Irish" being a monikerbestowed on a polyglot group of newcomers to the American dream. On thegridiron it was possible to prove yourself - and show your talents - on anequal footing with older, more established schools and traditions. Thisconscious inclusion of the larger story gives this book an important placeon the shelf, alongside Rockne's own unfinished autobiography, "WeRemember Rockne", "Knute Rockne, All American", and othermemoirs and studies. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Dad gummit good leadership book!
I'm a Penn State grad and fan, but I enjoyed Bobby Bowden's leadership book. It's very easy to read and has lots of good advice. Also, I respect his religious beliefs and that he openly shares them throughout the book. This is a good leadership book!

5-0 out of 5 stars Best Leadership Book I Have Ever Read
I have read Maxwell and a host of other leadership books, but there is a world of difference between a consultant or a middle-manager telling you about leadership...and the winningest coach in college football telling you about leadership!5-0 out of 5 stars Bobby Bowden is a Legend..
On the football field Bobby Bowden is king! He is also a very inspirational and motivated person. This book is amazing, in ALL aspects. You don't have to be a Florida State or even a football fan, this book goes so far beyond any sport. This book basically tells you how too live a better life, and Bobby Bowden obviously has a awesome one. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Big Ben!!
Big Ben: 27-4 as a starter (2004-2005 seasons)---only losses (3 of which were injury-related): Patriots, 2004 AFC Championship game (if Plax holds on to sure TD pass, we are only down 7 with about 7+ minutes to go in that game; Ben did some good things and was battling thumb and toe injuries) and also in 2005 (if Randle El doesn't get `cute' and lateral that pass to Ward, we probably win; again, Ben did some good things), as well as the Bengals in 2005 (Ben has beaten Carson Palmer's Bengals 3 times: twice in 2004 and big-time in the AFC Wild-Card game in 2005; Ben had 3 TD passes in this lone defeat and was battling a thumb injury) and Indy in 2005 (as we know, he got revenge in the AFC Divisional Playoff game; Ben threw a TD pass to Ward in this Monday night defeat and was coming off an injury-induced layoff).

4-0 out of 5 stars interesting for many reasons
The whole book is great. As a gay parent myself, I love to see more gay people telling their stories. But aside from that, the most interesting part of the book was the influence of religious conservatives on NFL players. As a sports fan, I found those sections alarming. Not because I think players should not express their faith, but because of the strong-arm tactics that may be in use to influence people's careers.
5-0 out of 5 stars Esera Finds Peace & Happiness
I give this a 5 because he deserves it.This poor guy was so paranoid and afraid of being caught or outed beforehe chose to do so himself. It is the predominant theme in the book and gets tiresome at times-but I suppose he had a lot to lose being a football player. He's gentlemanly enough to leave out all the juicy stories he could probably tell, but it's always interesting to read how one evolves from a closet case.

5-0 out of 5 stars read for all
what i got from esera tuaolo's book was so much more than i ever expected.tuaolo's story tore at my heart, the pain of his self identity that drove him to the edge...that in the end became a source of his strength was very powerful.i feel that those, who are in a place where there orientation has to be kept hidden, will now find comfort in knowing that others have been there and that life can, and often is, a wonderful place outside the closet.i see this as a tool to help educate, and make those who feel gays don't have a place in our society, to rethink just how much pain and destruction that they have helped fuel by creating the environment where so many feel the need to hide in the shadows of fear. maybe this man's story will help to bring more people together. the book was a very quick read, the story pulled me in and i felt like esera was reading it to me.his amazing positive energy came through as i read.however, it did not make the darkest parts of the book easy to read.

Editorial Review

Tim Green is proof that all football players aren't meat-headed Neanderthals. Green, an ex-player who has made his mark as a commentator on National Public Radio and the Fox Network, shows both his love of the game and his insights into its problems in this collection of some 70 essays on his experience in the National Football League. From the physical brutality of the sport -- he suffered 12 concussions as a player -- to the use of performance enhancing drugs, to the sport's connections with the mob, Green writes clearly and evenly about the dilemmas and deals the most professional football fans know nothing about -- the dark side to America's favorite pastime. ... 3-0 out of 5 stars Dark Side Not Up To Hype
This book does tell somewhat of what its like in the NFL, but on most of the accounts its based on one persons view.I am sure the writer had first hand knowledge, but he paints a picutre of the NFL that makes it look bad.In a time where image is everything the writer seems to paint a bad picture of the NFL.I found the book hard to read and it too me a long time to read it.There are other NFL books out there that I am sure are better, but I have yet to find one. This book is ok, it takes you behind the scenes in the locker rooms, the training rooms, the hotels and travel. It gives you a first hand look at what the players do on the field and off the field. However I don't think it was written all that well.

4-0 out of 5 stars The Dark Side of the Game : My Life in the NFL
Excellent insight into big time football. Tim Green is on his way to the writer's Superbowl.

1-0 out of 5 stars there's no meat in here
This book would be great if Tim Green actually named a few names aside from the guys he's talking up (see Dion, Steve Young).

3-0 out of 5 stars Good Read
This is overall, a good read. The book gave me a different perspective of J.C. Watts and resulted in more respect for the former Congressman. My only complaint is the numerous football analogies: too many. It became overkill after a while and I was annoyed by his constant references to the game. Other than that, I enjoyed reading the book.

1-0 out of 5 stars Another example of dishonest conservatism
Watts, football player turned politician, indicates his obsession with racism and politics by trying to defend political conservatives as non-racist even when it's obvious that these were the same lunatics in both parties that allowed the racism wackiness to spiral out of control in the south back in the 1960s and still does today nationwide albeit more subtely. The only reason rural voters in his area ever kept the guy in office was because he was a corporate conservative who enjoyed the art of bait and switching voters on culture hot button issues such as guns and abortion all the while keeping the economic mess as silent as possible. Sorry Mr. Watts, but good conservatives would never have sucked up to your cultural bait and switch tricks if it weren't for political in-correctness. You know you're just a neoconservative radical and not a honest conservative and you're not fooling most African Americans anyway.

4-0 out of 5 stars Heart-warming and heart-breaking
This book is the basis for the fantastic movie 'Brian's Song', about Brian Piccolo and his battle with cancer and his friendship with Gale Sayers.Jeannie Morris was the wife of Johnny Morris, a teammate of Brian Piccolo's.She does a splendid job of balancing the football aspect, with the friendship part, with the cancer battle.
4-0 out of 5 stars A look into the mind of Brian Piccolo
This book enables the reader to empathize for Brian. He was a pro football player who battled with cancer at a time when there wasn't a lot known about cancer.Even if you don't like football you can appreciate the book for what it is.It is good for lots of ages as well. The book is good about explaining what was known about cancer at the time.It includes medical analysis of his hospital visits as well as interactions with his family and teammates.

5-0 out of 5 stars Her brother Sen. George Allen is a Vicious Bully
Haven't read this yet, but am getting it.This book isn't just about George Allen the football coach, but also about her brother George Allen the Republican senator. She details numerous examples of severe abuse by George Jr. against his siblings.Sen. Allen is being talked up as a Presidential hopeful, so I am reading this book to find out what a sick psychotic freak he really is (in addition to a notorious racist)

4-0 out of 5 stars Great Read
All told, "Coach: The Life of Paul 'Bear' Bryant" is probably the best in-depth analysis of Bryant as not only a coach but as a man. Although "The Last Coach", a new Bryant biography, may eventually take this particular book's place in that regard, this is nonetheless the standard text for those seeking an in-depth look at Paul "Bear" Bryant.
2-0 out of 5 stars B. Harris
Dunnavant just doesn't deliver with his enamoured account of Bryant.
1-0 out of 5 stars Pathetic
Bryant was a great coach, but Dunnavant is a Bryant fan, plain and simple. He tells a sweet and sugary account of Bear's storied life, and leaves out the true tales of Bear's excessive drinking and also of his extra marital adventures. A "fan" should never write a "biography" about his or her hero. I think Bryant was an outstanding coach, but you'll have to look elsewhere if you want any REAL enlightenment about the life and times of Bear Bryant..... ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Good book but not great
I am an Ohio State Buckeye Football fan and found the book to be interesting, but not in the top 20% of books that I've read. There are a few other books about Woody, but I have not read them. The author could have interviewed more former players and colleagues of Woody. Most interesting is how Woody originally got the Buckeye head coaching job and the discussion of his life immediately after his firing.

3-0 out of 5 stars A broad brush look at Coach Hayes
Mr. Lombardo seems intent on being overly objective in his book by always finding a way to knock Woody even when paying him compliments. Some examples:
4-0 out of 5 stars Very Good Story"Poor Editing"
This was a book I looked forward to reading from the moment I heard about it.I received it for Christmas and read it immediately. The book is very hard to put down and could easily be read in one or two very long sittings. What took away from the very pleasant story line and delivery was the extremely poor editing. Many times in the book I had to suffer through either double or missing articles or dates that contradicted each other.Often times words were mixed up such as "the of" instead of "of the".These were minor annoyances but still distracted from my reading pleasure.

Editorial Review

This inspiring autobiography from two-time NFL Most Valuable Player Brett Favre provides an honest, detailed look at the author's personal struggles along the way to becoming a successful pro quarterback. After overcoming an injury from a serious automobile accident in college, drug addiction early in his professional career, and persistent doubts about his ability to lead the Green Bay Packers to a Super Bowl, Favre met his challenges head-on and established himself as one of the sport's superstars. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars For The Record!(...)
First I want to say something about the book. It's great!! If your a true fan of the Packers and want to know about one of the teams, and NFLs greatest players, buy this book. It shows you the kind of person Favre is on and off the field. He takes you through the ups and downs of his life and career that have made him the person and player he is today. Now, for the other reviews I read before writing this one. What promted some numbnuts to write about the packers loss to St. Louis in the playoffs in a book review?? They must be a Bears fan! Another one decided to write that Brett and his family were (...) That's intelligent. I know when I go to read a review about a book that interests me, I want to have to wade through the garbage that idiots like that jerk take up space with. For those of you with a brain in your head, trust me, Farve: For The Record is a great read!!

3-0 out of 5 stars Book for the T.V.soaps fans
This is a good book ,the problem came from the fixation they put on his painkillers addiction and the problems it bring with his wife and teammates. You also have a lot of details about the health problems thisaddiction caused to him,a little bit like "Drugs is bad to you, seewhat it do to me."His wife almost let him down for that, his teammatesare tired of him askingfor Vicodin and others painkillers. The two orthree first paragraphs talk about that, but chapter after chapter they comeback with it.The book talk to much about his "post popularity"life and not enough of him when he was unknown. His "postpopularity" life are report in all the daily newspapers, that why Iexpect to learn more about Bret Favre before he was a star. They pass tofast on his teens years, his collegiate years. The reason to write abiography his to talk about the unknown parts of someone life, but in thisbook you just found what everybody read on the last five yearsnewspapers. That a good but incomplete book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Best book ever written!
Favre for The Record is the best book I ever read.It is totally a must buy. ... Read more
