Thorough, well-researched bio of Lombardi
This is a very good book, but not a great one.Vince does well describing Lombardi through his actions and the impact he had on those around him, especially his former players.Everything is written in a clear and easilyunderstood manner, especially his paradoxical nature.Read more

Courage
I turned 40 six months ago and suffered my first panic attack shortly aftewards. I was rushed to the hospital, thinking it was a heart attack. I was lucky. The ER doc diagnosed it correctly as a panic attack.
Inspiration to Me!
Ithought the book gave good detail on Panic Disorder and how it can affect anybody. The first couple of chapters went on to long about how he grew up and gave no information on his disorder until later in the book. I believe the book should have began when he started to develope Panic Disorder.

disappointing
Be forewarned that panic does not come into this book until page 83 (of 208).Also be forewarned that it's written at maybe a sixth-grade reading level.(Neither of these is necessarily a bad thing.) Read more

Good book, important book, but apparently flawed
I hadn't expected to enjoy the account of Jones' early days leading up to his pro football career. But that was the best part of the book. Once I got halfway through his career I started skipping large chunks of text. HeadSlap
I have idolized Deacon Jones all of my life, and this book really made The Deacon out to be everything I thought he was.The reason I liked the book so much was the fact that it not only covered his unrealistically impressive football career, but also covered his entire life from childhood all the way through his retirement from the NFL.It really gave you a real feel of the hard, grueling times he went through back in the days of racism and presidium.I recommend this book for anyone, even those who are not interested in football, fore is a book far from only being about football, but a book of struggle, anger, distress, and overcoming all obstacles in order to succeed greatly in life.

This is a not a self-serving biography. I learned a lot.
I met Deacon Jones about two months after I read this book. I felt like I had actually known him for a long time and even played with him. The author did a great job in describing the man, especially his youth in Florida, during the fifties. If you like sports and understand the discipline and dedication that a good athlete puts into his profession you will experience it in this documentary that reads like a novel. In some ways, this book is a history of the NFL as seen through the practical eyes of a humble and sincere young man who came from a small town in the "old south" and was never groomed for college or the NFL. This is the first biography that I read completely without getting tired of all the subject's glories. The book is not self-serving. Buy it
Straight forward, no nonsense book about everything from Johnson's college coaching days to the Cowboy's first super bowl under his staff. He spends several pages scattered through the book almost whining about certain calls of the official in certain games, but what coach doesn't (even I'm guilty). However, I read the book in one day because I just couldn't put it down. He does give insight into how he became (in my mind) the master motivator of NFL football. Recommened to any football coach or player who loves the game and loves learning pychological aspects of the game.

Still good 10 years later
I read this book when I was 12 years old and the Cowboys had won their first of 3 Super Bowls in the 90's.I loved it but, then again, I would have loved a bottle of poison if it had a Cowboys star on it.

The Voice of the Clemson Tigers
I miss Jim Phillips. As the voice of the Clemson Tigers, Jim filled the rooms of my house growing up more often than some of my relatives did. In fact, for the first 30 years of my life, Jim Phillips was the only "Voice of the Tigers" that I knew. His genuine warmth, friendliness, and passion for Clemson athletics made him the perfect ambassador for the university.

An exemplory life
Whe you finish this book you wish it was longer. Like a good movie you do not want itto end. It describes a man who has done some great things to help others. How many college football coaches would turn down 3 head coaching opportunities at big-time schools to stay in "Happy Valley". A couple who could not have their own children. Then adopted 6. Not all in infancy. A man who took in foster children and at the same time ran the defense for one of college football's elite teams for 23 years. A kid who never grew up. A perfect illustartion of the greatest football coach ever !! Yes, even better than Me Lombardi himself.First of all, it was a wonder Bill continued to write this book when his team was 1-8. Almost every story has a happy ending right ?? Well not exactly. Being a Parcells fan (followed him fron NY, to NE and back to NY) I followed this season closely.For a team to go 1-8 and win ther next 7 in a row with nothing to play for, is amazing. Parcells is the greatest motivator ever.The book talks about his relatrionship with the players. Yes, he actually got along with his players, well some of them. Devoted Steeler Fan
Being a Steeler Fan, I have read both Terry Bradshaw's and Rocky Bleir's books, and while I found them interesting, I didn't get quite the feel for the individual as well as the game from their books as I did from Andy Russell's.I am not just a fan of the sport of football, but a fan of theplayers. As a fan of the individuals, I like to know as much about them aspossible.Everything from their childhood and family life, through highschool and college, because all of that has an effect on their footballcareer and what they bring to the game.Andy's stories about his lifeafter football give us a perspective on the good effects that thecommraderie and competitiveness of football can have on the rest of yourlife.I particularly enjoyed the chapter which tells of his visits tocombat areas in Vietnam. The American soldiers in the various hospitals hadthe same reaction to American football players.I totally understand thatreaction - meeting A Pittsburgh Steeler so far away from home helped thesoldier forget the harshness of war for just a few moments and go back toall that is good in the world - good old American Football!

Memory Lane
Bob Cowser takes a real life hard nosed look at what it means to sacrifice.I relived my youth with his visions and ideals on the gridiron and I felt his conflict with having a family and going through the monotony of work and life getting in the way.People tend to get caught up in a whirlwind and forget who they are.This book looks at that inner turmoil of change and wonder."The Professor"finds a way to blend the worlds of blue collar society and academia which is hard just to think about.This is done with quotes before chapters and personal synopsis of living with commitments and desire.
Great book about someone who actually fulfills their dream
I picked up this book with much intrigue, as I myself am a football junkie. This well-written, first-person account of joining a semi-pro football team is not only inspiring, but entertaining as well. Cowser (the "Professoer", as his teammates refer to him) describes his lifelong dream of playing football after his high school and college years, and how the idea to play in the nation's most storied semi-pro team was met with much resistance. As a husband, father, professor, and now semi-pro football player, Cowser learns to balance all the duties accompanied by each role, and at times, barely by the skin of his teeth. A great book not only for people who are interested in football, but for those who long to re-live a childhood dream. Well worth a read! ... Read more

truly undefeated
Bob was my childhood hero, and so seeing that he had written an autobiography was like a dream that I never thought would come true for this private man in the public setting. However, he and his recently famous son Brian felt compelled to write a book that doesn't brag about their on-field exploits, but as a beautiful tribute to the person that appears to be their hero, Bob's first wife and Brian's mother Judi. This book is a heartwarming story of how a family survived the tough times and came out on top.If you like football or not you will enjoy this book and be able to see the love of family between each line.If you think football can't be applied to life, you will find out differently by the end of this book.Truly inspiring!

Dan Marino: The Making of a Legend
This book is the greatest book i ever read.Growing up in Pittsburg and eating those peanut butter and jelly sandwhiches turned a boy into a man and not just an ordinary man, Dan Marino THE GREATEST quarterback EVER and this book will prove to you that he is the best person on and off the field.Its a shame how video games are taking over kids life so we will probably never see anyone that comes close to Marino in every aspect of life.He donates his time to help children in need and on the field he throws the ball super-human like.I live in New York and i'm a Jet fan but theres no way i can deny him being the best ever and if you deny it its really because your jealous.This book shows the ups and downs dan had in his life and carrer.Dan is a loyal and caring man to his wife and kids.Theres never been a man with a greater will to win, and when you see him play and the fire in his eyes you will agree.After reading this book it will turn any man into a Dan fan.I recomend this book to football fans and Dan Marino fans all over the globe.
Funding
Dan Marino was one of the great all-time quarterbacks.His quick decision making, and quick release revolutionized the game.But we never could have seen this athlete perform, had there not been NFL funding.Yes, without contributions from government subsidies, we never would have been able to see Elway play.I mean Marino.Do you guys realize that George Bush is thinking about cutting NFL funding.He has already voted to reduce quick release-throwing-funding.Without this funding Marino can't make the comeback he keeps talking about.
