5-0 out of 5 stars History of basketball as seen through the eyes of a player
Outside Shooter: A Memoir is the personal autobiography of professional basketball player Philip Raisor. The pressure of serving in a team sport in the 1950's is aptly recalled (especially since this was an era when American society first took steps toward integration in professional team sports), steps as hotly resisted in the area of athletic competition as anywhere else. Both Philip's physical struggles and difficulties of conscience are astutely and honestly detailed in superbly insightful work which is especially recommended to the attention of anyone interested in the history of basketball as seen through the eyes of a player on the front lines. ... 1-0 out of 5 stars If you need help sleeping, read this!
The author wrote this book by compiling quotes from lots of others. In Hokkian, there is a saying, "Kong2 Ye3 Sou1", which can be roughly translated into "preaching high principals". I can't stand the writing, and I believe it would put anyone to sleep. Good luck!

5-0 out of 5 stars An innovative biography & a read well worth your while
I'm a big basketball fan and a friend recommended this book to me. I really found it very interesting, informative, and yes, insightful. As opposed to a standard rehashing of a celebrity?s biography, or predictable blow by blow travelogue, this book takes a more dynamic approach to looking at why Yao has become such an international phenomenon. By seamlessly blending current events with basketball history, Chin explains what this athlete symbolizes, how he represents so many diverse fans, and why this all matters in today?s global village. Now I can see how some people might not get the subtler messages - the relevance of the 2,000 year tradition of Chinese philosophy with modern life isn?t headline news in the US. But the author does a worthy job of making these links, and supporting the larger case that Westerners have to be more aware of Eastern perspectives (just as Asia has followed America), since this "alternative" awareness actually can help us lead more well-rounded lives. And in our crazy world, I think that is a lesson well worth reading.

5-0 out of 5 stars Chin's book is worthy while also being cutting-edge.
If you are expecting to read "The Tao of Yao" because you are a Yao Ming fan, you will come away with some good & funny info about this gentle giant. But, this book is so much more as you progress from chapter to chapter! I often wondered why my hair would rise whenever I watched Yao play basketball on TV, but, I just thought it was because I was watching a very good "tall" basketball player with some skills. 5-0 out of 5 stars Get 2 copies...one to read, one to cut pictures out of.
You will want to get two copies of this book - because you're gonna wantto cut out some of the great, great photos and frame them.
5-0 out of 5 stars The best collection of photos of the best player of his time
Hoop junkies rejoice! If you are a basketball fan than you are a Larry Bird fan and this is the one must have book of arguably the greatest basketball player of this or any generation.Dramatic photos and lively, informative text, chronicle Larry Legend's unforgetable career with theBoston Celtics. There is no better collection of photos of LarryBird...period.Steve Lipofsky's photographs have captured and preserved, for basketball fans everywhere, the storied career of one of basketball'strue legends.A great holiday gift for the true fan or anyone who wants toknow what all the fuss was about.

4-0 out of 5 stars Extraordinary photographs; adequate prose.
Any basketball fan interested in one of the greatest players in thehistory of the game will peruse this book with interest -- much more forthe striking photographs than for the copy, which covers Bird's biographyin chronological fashion, concluding with his successful first year ascoach of the NBA's Indiana Pacers. The photography, however, is worth theprice of admission. Lipofsky has covered the Celtics since very early inBird's career and his artist's eye has caught and framed some remarkableimages not only of Bird but of the game -- among the stunning photographsin the book are wonderful game shots of Bird vs. his greatest competitorsover the years, the Lakers as a whole, Michael Jordan, and Julius Erving, and many striking images of the Celtics in their heyday. The temptationwith this book is to tear out and frame a few of the photos; they're thatgood. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A very revealing book
I agree with back and forth. People who slam the book are biased. MJ has a good and bad side, and the people who whine are probably his fans or have shares in his company. The problem is players from different eras can't be compared. How do you compare Oscar Robertson to Earvin Johnson? You can't...but you can compare them relative to the players in their era, to players they played against, and compare their relative greatness to the relative greatness to the players from other eras. Compare Michael to others relative to his contribution of others...don't just compare scoring, or Dominique Wilkins would be surely better than Bill Russell...only a misinformed or ignorant NBA basketball fan would think something as preposterous as that. Kudos for Sam Smith and taking off the kid gloves. If the book is all trash journalism, why didn't Michael sue for slander or defamation of character? There must be some truth to it.

3-0 out of 5 stars back and forth
I have mixed feelings about Michael Jordan. On the one hand, he is a great athlete.I respect his work ethic. He has turned in a number of great performances and is no doubt one of the greatest to have ever played the game of basketball.4-0 out of 5 stars Michael Jordan book review
"Second Coming:The Strange Odyssey of Michael Jordan - from Courtside to Home Plate and Back Again," by Sam Smith, is a biogarphy about Michael Jordan. It starts out a little before he won his first NBAchampionship with the Chicago Bulls. It tells about the seasons leading upto his retirement in October of 1993.Through that time, the author talksabout the next two seasons. It talks about Jordans' personality at thetime, and some of the problems he was having to deal with.It profilesJordans' gambling troubles and the troubles he was having with the media. This book is similar to the book "Tiger Woods:The Makings of aChampion."These two books are very similar because of their genre. They are both biographies about famous sports stars. The only differencebetween the two is that the Tiger Woods book talks more about his childhoodthan the Michael Jordan book does.I thought that this book was very good. I liked it because I really liked the structure of it.I thought that itwas really easy to read because it goes in a logical order.I think thatsince it has good order, this serves as a good model for writing.Therereally is not much imagery in the book because it is a biography.Ithought that this book was very good because it tells a lot of good stuffabout Michael Jordan'sprofessional career.I think that one thing thatthis book lacked was information on his personal life.I think that Icould have realated better to the story had there been more personal infoon him.I think that anybody who likes to follow Michael Jordan wouldenjoy this book very much.Overall I liked this book a lot and I hope toread more books by this author. ... 3-0 out of 5 stars Good, but not quite enough

3-0 out of 5 stars KARL DELIVERED THIS BOOK DOES NOT
THIS BOOK IS SUPPOSED TO BE ABOUT KARL MALONE NBA SUPERSTAR. BUT ALOT OF THIS BOOK IS SPENT ON THE HISTORY OF THE JAZZ AND MANY OTHERS PLAYERS. IT IS NOT A BAD BOOK BUT NOT WHAT I EXPECTED. OK READ.

5-0 out of 5 stars Karl Malone shows that Mark Beekman is a purple belt...
That Karl Malone fellow has been on the man show, movies, W.C.W, and knows Maxercise purple belt Mark Beekman. What else can a superstar basketball player accomplish?! The book is great, just like my girlfriend Joelle Fillipo and that Barry Sanders guy the dude mentioned when reviewing the book. Karl Malone should break the all-time record in a few years for points to show that Jason Haines from Parkway Manor kissed Jennifer Sue Frisch!

1-0 out of 5 stars If you have never heard of Karl Malone...
...then this is probably an okay book to get started.Probably more for teenagers.I was in Salt Lake when K.M. was drafted and the then owner of the team had really wanted Keith Lee but the fans gathered at the Salt Palace were happy Malone was still available. Before his name was announced fans were chanting "Mailman, Mailman..."That draft began a long and very good relationship with the Utah fans. Both have benefited greatly from the union.Unfortunately that part of K.M.'s story isn't in the book.Neither are a lot of things you'd like to know, such as the details of Mr. Malone's famous off-season workouts that make his workout partners puke, although it is touched on.I wanted to know how he developed it and who can keep up with him and what else he does to maintain his high durability in the modern game.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Bruce Weber's book
Everything went like clockwork from the time I ordered "Through my Eyes" by Bruce Weber until it arrived in perfect condition in the mail.Thank you so much.

4-0 out of 5 stars A Review Of the 2004-2005 Season Via Weber's Perspective
This is very quick, easy and light reading, but it's a wonderful walk of remembrance through the 2004-2005 basketball season. It's sprinkled along the way with revelations about Bruce Weber, the man. I truly recommend the book to any Illini fan who would enjoy "reliving" that dream season.
