4-0 out of 5 stars A Story of Confindence
I don't know how to express how Chamique's book has given me confindence. Knowing Chamique is succeeding over come obstacles in her here life has given me inspiration. The book has taught me to work hard in school and on the basketball court. If you work hard you will success in great things. It could be changing the world or graduating from High School.

3-0 out of 5 stars NOT AS GOOD AS THOUGHT
Chamiquqe did a good job writing about her life, but it wasn't as good applying it to her life.It was about her family, basketball, but wasn't very much on focus. It was an okay book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Must Read For Anyone Battling Extreme Obstacles
Thoroughly enjoyed this book, not only from the basketball perspective, but even more from the human aspect. Chamique is a great example for children coming from broken homes and dysfunctional situations. I think it's a must read for anyone battling extreme obstacles. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A Great Book on Isiah
I have always dug Isiah Thomas. The Brother overcame alot of Obstacles&still does to this day.he doesn't always get the Credit&Love he so deserves. He was a Great Player.I Loved it whenHe&The Pistons Beat The Over-Inflated Bulls.ZEKE was always the man.HePlayed with So Much Heart&Determanation. Now as Coach of The Pacers itwill be Interesting to see where the Next Journey Takes Him.I Really Digthe Fact that he is about Black Ownership.it's Time to have a Sayon&Off The Court. He has had his Ups&Downs but has still Remained aClass Act.this Book Reflects so Much About this Man.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent biography of Isiah.
I have been a fan of Isiah and the Pistons for a long time now. This was the first biography of Isiah that I have read and I enjoyed it very much.I knew a lot about Isiahs childhood but also found out a lot more readingthis book. The writer seems to spend a lot of time discussing Isiahs timewith the Raptors, I would have liked to read more about his time with thePistons.I also would have liked to see a mention of the 70+ students thatIsiah put through college out of his own pocket.Overall I really enjoyedthis book, if your an Isiah fan you need to pick this one up.

5-0 out of 5 stars very well written it tells of both the good and bad of a sup
I thought the book was very well written. It allowed the reader to see that Isiah is a superstar that pulled himself up out of poverty and despair, but he is also a human being (which we sometimes forget about staratheletes) with human failings, fears, and needs.I is the best 20 bucks Ihave spent in a long time.I would suggest to anyone who has ever lookedat athletes in a negative light to read this book it details the life ofgrowing up poor and not allowing it to rule your life.Isiah, like so manyof our black males in America grew up poor and without his father, but hedid not allow himself to wallow in it, and that is a lesson that many ofyoung people need to adhere to.Read more

Any book or anything with Michael Jordan is great because he is the best of ALL time! And all his books like Rebound are great books to read. And they have great pictures.

3-0 out of 5 stars Soso book
It explored some issues, like is Jordan a ballhog, but not in depth. It is average quality. I wouldn't recommend it, but I wouldn't disparage it either.

5-0 out of 5 stars An excellent source on the "Bad Boy"
This book was awesome. I have read just about all of the sports books out there and I liked the way this one got right down to the basics of Dennis, his life, his childhood, and how he became what he is today. It laid outfor me how all the events in his life lead to his present self.Furthermore, the author doesn't attempt to over-analyze Dennis on his own,but rather gives you all the info to let you form your own opinion. I wishall the sports bio's were written like this!!! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Great basketball book
Pallette has written a smashing, detailed, well written slamdunk of a book about an almost forgotten giant of basketball. The young Italian kid from San Francisco rose to the heights as the finest player of his generation. The book explains in fascinating detail his rise to fame, and includes amazing play by play accounts of many of the games, pieced together from many newspaper accounts at the time.Besides being a brilliant piece of research, it is a fast paced book to read.If you love basketball, you will love this book. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Swee 'Pea
This is simply my favorite book ever. I have read approximately 100 sports books and no single book ever made me feel as the authors (Valenti and NYC high school coach Ron Naclerio) were so close to and affected by the actions of their subject. Daniels has been labled as one of the greatest high school basketball players ever and his legend is probably even larger. He came from a broken home and became a victim of drug abuse at such an early age that his career never amounted to anything close to what it should have been. He did eventually play in the NBA only after years of drugs and a critically wounding gunshot robbed him of the potential he had when he was young. I met him in a bar at the New Jersey shore (close to where he and his family now live) on a chance one night years after I read this and was still simply awed by him as a result of this book. If you are a sports fan, please read this.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Fall Of Ball
MAGIC JOHNSON WITH A JUMP SHOT, that's what they called him, who am i talking about? Read on my friend. In this grippin and tear jerking story of street ball, we learn the true goods and evils of the game. In this story, the main character, Lloyd "Swee' Pea" Daniels, struggles againsthis addication to "the rock". This story will give you the truevision of what it takes to be a great, and the situations young urban kidshave to go through to make their dreams come true.

5-0 out of 5 stars Sad dramatic story of fallen legend
Great book about could-have-been basketball legend Lloyd Daniels.A great inside look of how the glory of basketball corrupts youth.Inspirational because of Lloyd Daniels' limited success in the NBA and CBA.I loved thisbook because of its rags to seemingly riches to rags story about theSwee'Pea Lloyd Daniels. ... KURTZ' BIOGRAPHY IS EXCEEDINGLY RECOMMENDABLE FOR BOTH PEOPLE WHO HAVE JUST HEARD ABOUT THIS GREAT COMPOSER AND WANT TO KNOW MORE AND FOR THOSE WHO LOVE HIS MUSIC BUT DON'T KNOW ANYTHING ABOUT HIS LIFE EXCEPT STRANGEMYTHS (RELIGIOUS GURU WHO COMPOSED MASTERPIECES IN HIS EARLY YEARS BUT WENTMAD AFTER HE HAD COME IN TOUCH WITH EASTERN RELIGIONS). HOWEVER, THE PHOTOSAND KURTZ' MORE THAN JUST ENTERTAINING STYLE (ALTHOUGH PROFESSORS WILL MISSAN ANALYTICAL APPROACH) GIVE A GOOD IDEA OF STOCKHAUSEN'S CHARACTER AND HOWHE WORKS. UNFORTUNATELY, THE BOOK LOSES MUCH OF ITS FASCINATION ANDRICHNESS WHEN IT COMES TO THE "LICHT-OPERN". Editorial Review

Basketball is only the starting point for novelist John Edgar Wideman's meditations in this genre-defying book, which announces its difference in the opening paragraph. Some other author might have written the sentence, "Playing the game provided sanctuary, refuge from a hostile world." Only Wideman would follow it with, "Only trouble was, to reach the court we had left our women behind," and only Wideman would close a book about playground basketball with a letter to his grandmother. In between, he contrasts the sport with the craft of writing; mingles memories of learning to play with recollections of growing up in Pittsburgh; invokes the lover he found after his 30-year marriage broke up ("Turning this into a basketball game, aren't you, Mr. Hoopster?" she says at one point during their affair); talks about minstrel shows and African American music; and pits the purity and democracy of schoolyard ball against the professional sport, in which "a chosen few, players certified to be the very best, perform for pay as entertainers." You'll need to read it all to appreciate the way Wideman masterfully weaves together these diverse strands; suffice it to say that the importance of basketball to black men in a racist society, though a crucial subject here, is too straightforward to be the entire topic. "The deepest, simplest subject of this hoop book is pleasure," he writes, and he conveys that sensation to his readers on several different levels: the excitement of a superb description (men playing on a Greenwich Village court); the satisfaction of shrewd cultural analysis (why poor kids wear expensive clothes to play); the power of metaphor (the searing chapter titled "Who Invented the Jump Shot (A Fable)"); and most of all the thrill of watching an artist at the top of his game. 5-0 out of 5 stars Not for the low brow...
May be the best novel about the inner experience of an aging athlete. An autobiographical novel by an accomplished writer and a complex man, Hoop Roots is a challenging read.Wideman demands something of his audience, a rarity these days, and those looking for a mindless basketball book will likely not be up to the task.As in his other books, Wideman occasionally gets carried away with his command of complex language, and some passages are a struggle even for the most commited readers. However, overall this is a first rate novel, by a first rate writer, on a subject with which he is singularly expert.

1-0 out of 5 stars Spare yourself from this one
I had to read this book for a college course. Too bad for me, since it's the worst book I've had to read from cover to cover. HoRrIbLy boring, mostly incoherent, the book takes very promising themes and turns them into very stylish junk. Loaded with clichés and overused images. Blah, blah, blah, it goes on and on. If I wasn't being evaluated on it for class I would have stopped reading it after the first 15 pages. It's the only Wideman book I've read, and of course I don't plan to read any others, but if this is proof of his best work, I hope he is a better creative writing professor than his writing would suggest.

In a sports world of inflated salaries and even more inflated egos, Grant Hill is a refreshingly modest voice for change.Young players especially will enjoy this book about what it was like to grow up as the son of a pro football great and how Grant himself became a star basketball player at Duke and then Rookie ofthe Year in the NBA. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Changed Game
This book is mainly about the life of Grant Hill and his basketball career. Grant Hill's Basketball career started in jr. high and went through high school. Grant Hill got his NBA scholarship in high school, and he now plays for the Pistons. He is not like any other basketball player. When Grant Hill does something good he doesn't rub it in the opponent's face, he just keeps playing. I think that Grant Hill is a very inspiring athlete to younger kids.
4-0 out of 5 stars Change the Game book review
Overall I thought the book Change the Game was pretty good. One of the things I liked most about the book was that Grant never talked about all the money he made.I also liked how Grant expressed his feelings about problems kids face today. However, one thing I didn't like about the book was it was sort of short.Grant also moved from one topic to the next very quickly.Other than thosethings the book was good.

I picked up a copy because I heard Pat on a radio interview and felt I could use a book on "finding your passion and pursuing it".Boy!I never thought I would enjoy the book so much...I couldn't put it down. Thanks Pat for sharing so much of your life with us! I am a Latin girl who really doesn't get much into American sports, I admit I read it for the "success" part, but I learned so much about sports and the front office operations that now I enjoy keeping up with the trades, drafts, etc.My husband has been impressed!I recently re-read it!

4-0 out of 5 stars An In Depth Walk with Mr. Williams
This is a well-written and enjoyable book to read.Contains interesting stories that make you really feel like you know Mr. Williams by the end. Great reading for a sports enthusiast. You sense the enthusiasm in whichMr. Williams lives his life. However, you also sense that this enthusiasmstems from his ego, which literally oozes off the pages. This leaves thereader questioning whether Mr. Williams, despite all of his religiousspeaking engagements, is a humble Christian or an ego-driven peoplepleaser.5-0 out of 5 stars An Extraordinary Book by an Extarordinary Person

4-0 out of 5 stars Giant Book
The only thing bigger than the chip on Mr. Abdul-Jabbar's shoulder in this text is the grand and engaging story he tells. For fans or just the curious observer (as I was), he takes us on an insightful journey into his motivation, his doubts, his difficulties, and his dreams. It sometimes seems that the persona behind the person is revealed more to the reader than to the writer.

4-0 out of 5 stars A NICE READ FROM SPECIAL K
KAREEM TELLS OF HIS LIFE GROWING UP IN NEW YORK IN GREAT DETAIL IN THIS BOOK. BUT I THINK HE SHOULD HAVE TOLD US MORE ABOUT HIS PLAYING DAYS AT UCLA, MILWAUKEE AND LOS ANGELES. THIS HAS A LOT OF GOOD STUFF LIKE HIS FIRST MEETING WITH WILT, HIS TEAMMATES AT UCLA, AND HIS RELATIONSHIP WITH CHERYL PISTANO. I REALLY FOUND HIS BUDDAHISM AND ALL THE PEOPLE INVOLVED TO BE VERY WEIRD AND UNINTERESTING. KAREEM IS AN INTELLIGENT GUY WHO ENJOYS THE MATERIAL AND SPIRITUAL THINGS IN LIFE.
