1-0 out of 5 stars Truly awful
Let me start by saying that I am not a Dennis Rodman fan. I can now say that I think he and the author were a perfect match. For about the first 2 chapters I felt some empathy for Ms Rodman, however, as I read further I discovered that she was an immature, self centered, physically abusive woman. She constantly trashes the other women in Dennis's life, while behaving the same way. By the end of the book I had lost all sympathy for her, and gained a true sense of pity for the child that she and Dennis have. It is a shame that trees were cut down to print this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars What people do for money, could just break my heart
America is truly the land of capitalism and opportunity. This chick has a baby by a known lunatic who abuses her, then writes a tell all story full of smut and filth, and then she has the audacity to expect us to feel sorryfor her.Sorry!!!! I had a hard time seeing her as the victim, that coveris pure filth and ought to be burned. If my mother had the audacity topose like that in a tell all smut fest like that I'd have a seriouscomplex. No wonder Dennis dies his hair and cross dresses, with hisdysfunctional upbringing and her as a wife and mother of his child I'd be awacko too!!!!!

5-0 out of 5 stars AWESOME!!!!!
this is a book that will keep you reading. I read it in a day.. and also read it again and again.. It's like a soap opera in a way, it makes you laugh, angry, sad, etc. It also makes you look at basketball (and sports in general) differently. I am a Dennis Rodman fan; but after reading this book, I'm more of a Anicka Rodman fan!!!! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A great, motivational read
This is a really good book about a basketball player who overcame his great height disadvantage to become an NBA superstar. This book takes you through the basketball career of Tyrone "Muggsy" Bogues. All his life he was shorter than everone on the basketball court. Can you imagine how it's like playing in the NBA when you are on average about 1.5 feet shorter than every one else? That's how Muggsy Bogues has played for his whole life.5-0 out of 5 stars I mainly talked about the great facts in this book.
i thougt that this was a great book for any fan of muggsy bogues, or basketball itsself.if you are a fan of muggsy and do not already have this book, you should definately but it.it all the facts you need to knowand great up-to-date pictures.this is a great atleast 5 star book. Themain reason i liked thisbook so much is because i am a long time fan andit told me things, or facts that i had never known about the great muggsybogues.all the information is great, and correct.also, the chaptershave very catchy titles, and you will never get bored of this book.iwould like to give mad props to muggsy, of course, and the author formaking such a great book.

4-0 out of 5 stars It was good, but sometimes boring
It hada good story behind it and it explained his life very well but it just kept going on and going on.It made me tired to read that book. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A Must Read
I literally couldn't put this book down. Upon receiving this book as a Christmas gift from my wife (who has endured my fascination with Jimmy V for years) I read the book within a day of opening the front cover. As a student at NCSU during the last year of his tenure I was touched by his gifts. This book shows the human side of Jimmy and his relationships with his family, players, fellow coaches, sportswriters. You will find yourself laughing outloud and moved at the same time. The book gives an informative look into the truth behind all of the myths surrounding his departure from N.C. State. This is truly a motivational book which provides an insightful look to the life of coach Jimmy V.

4-0 out of 5 stars Laughing Out Loud
While reading the Gifts of Jimmy V, I found myself laughing out loud while imagining the plots told by his brothers, coaches, and friends.Although I was too young to remember the Championship win at NC State, I do recall his ESPN days.I always thought he was a nut, and thought it was a shame that cancer took him away in such a tragic way.The book was great, and if you are like me and don't have time to read novels, it's a good short book that gives you a different look at life and how you should live it.

5-0 out of 5 stars A fast, funny read and inspiring too!
Jim Valvano is best remembered for two things--running around the court after NC State won the 1983 National Championship, and for the emotional ESPY speech he made, where he urged everyone "Don't Give Up--Don't Ever Give Up."This book goes beyond that to tell amusing and often touching stories of Valvano's life through the eyes of those who knew him best, starting with his brother Bob who author's the book.Bob has a radio show on ESPN Radio that is pretty funny (I have heard it late at night while driving mostly), and he tells some funny stories in this book. The book is a biography of Jim Valvano, but VERY liberally spiced with stories all throughout.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars I had a hard time putting it down-easy reading and unbiased.
I saw this book on the bottom shelf at a popular supermarket about two weeks ago. I had not done much free reading of late and thought it looked like a good book to get me back into a good habit and hobby. It reveals the good and the bad about coach Knight and covered a great deal of ground without getting into too much details about the incidents of Knight. Since I grew up on the Kentucky-Indiana border, I was able to watch more than a handful of Indiana's games on the Indiana basketball network and found Phil Berger's coverage of Knight's best and worst years exciting. The end of the book even has a glossary of all the IU players that made it through all four years without transferring(and tells what they are doing now). It even goes back to Knight's formative years as an assistant coach at Army and discusses Knight's shortcoming as a player at Ohio State(defense) lead him to stress defense and team-play the most as a head coach. Ex-player Landon Turner (who was paralyzed in a car wreck that cut his playing career short) praises Knight for benching him while his mind was more on having a good time off the court than being successful on the court. As far as the statements by ex-players that lead to the demise of Knight at Indiana, Mr. Burger just reports the facts and does not lash out any judgments against Knight. In summary, this is a very enjoyable book to read and will not bore the reader with too much details. Go ahead and buy it(you may finish it in one day).

3-0 out of 5 stars An Interesting Story Beset by a Biased Storyteller...
I read this book from the unbiased perspective of a college basketball fan looking to learn a little more about Bobby Knight, but Berger clearly didn't write it from an unbiased point-of-view.2-0 out of 5 stars Weak - maybe worthy of a magazine article... maybe...
I've read just about every book on Knight. As an IU alum who graduated one of the years that the Hoosiers won a national championship, most of the student body (myself included) - viewed RMK as a demi-God.Certainly he was blessed with one of the finest basketball minds in history.Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars A keepsake for desert dwellers
David Kniss, the author and former Butler player, readily admits that this book was somewhat rushed - 16 months in the making - considering Coach Butler's 32 year career. And while this is true, Kniss still delivers a cohesive timeline of Butler's life. 4-0 out of 5 stars From Ollie's Nephew

1-0 out of 5 stars A Sad Attempt At Legitimacy - Zero stars should be an option...
Is there someone you work with who can never succeed at one job before they promote him to another, circumventing all rationale concerning "the best person for the job"?Gregg Doyel somehow worms his way upward on his career path even though many bloggers - let alone other columnists - are superior writers and investigative journalists. This book confounds the mind. You constantly wonder "how did someone this poor at writing ever get a book published?".My brother gave me this as a Christmas gift.We are both Duke fans and have been since 1972.He had the best of intentions considering the title. However, my brother, who is an accomplished public speaker and teacher, would have vomited upon reading such incomprehensible drivel.

1-0 out of 5 stars Yawner

5-0 out of 5 stars His memoir celebrates their growth and provides a powerful leader's first-person experiences
Jerry Reynolds and Don Drysdale's Reynolds Remembers: 25 Years With The Sacramento Kings is for any interested in the evolution of a shortstring operation which couldn't compete to a model NBA franchise. The Kings are celebrating their 20th season in Sacramento, California - and Jerry Reynolds was part of them before their rise to fame. His memoir celebrates their growth and provides a powerful leader's first-person experiences.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Best Tuesday Night Team
Remember that? This is a must read/item for those that have lived the history. If you've been part of the ride, then you know the story. But Jerry Reynolds has filled in the blanks with information that you could only get from... well, from Jerry Reynolds:The front office background on the Terry Tyler and Derek Smith trades; Bobby Hurley's potential and toughness; the head coach candidates; actual Bill Russell conversations (apparently he could talk... and laugh). What? We could have "stole" Detlef Schrempf!?!?The book even helped explain my "unique" encounter with Jawann Oldham on the day he was cut loose by the Kings.
4-0 out of 5 stars I "Remember" Too
The details within "Reynolds Remembers" paint a vivid and entertaining picture of what life was like for a struggling and then reborn NBA franchise. It was filled with anecdotes and humorous observations of true events.I enjoyed it very much.

4-0 out of 5 stars Truth
Okay so Annie has lived a life that no one would like to pursue. Well I guess you can learn a lot from her book, but it's probably also good to know Dennis' side also. Annis does a wonderful job in this book telling it how it is and never leaves out the juicy details.

3-0 out of 5 stars Say What ???
Anicka Rodman's "Worse Than He Says He Is" is subtitled "White Girls Don't Bounce". Who is she kidding??? Her sordid story reads just the opposite. This attractive, white girl with a model's credentials inexplicably submitted to Dennis Rodman's drubbings ( or should I say "dribblings" ). An attractive white girl who he bounced all over the place: off the bathroom wall, down the apartment steps. An abusive and unfaithful excuse for a man with severe mental shortcomings, is loved and regulafrly forgiven by the woman who bears his child, suffers four abortions, has her face smashed with his backhand so badly that she suffers TMJ and needs to where a jaw brace, suffers through bouts of clamydia that he brought home to her from his various wanton interludes with strippers and assorted low-lifes , along with Herpes I and Herpes II, a permanent reminder of his infidelities. Shades of antoother blond, former model, Catholic, white girl named Nicole Brown who also suffered abuse at the hands of a black athlete, and continued to come back for more, bouncing all the way. Only the endings are different. What I missed in Anicka's tale is a "moral to the story". Why does she reject the nice guys that pursue her? Why does she not only submit to this treatment, but continually comes back for more? Why did she reject her Catholic upbringing and values and submit to abortions and how can she now raise her daughter as a Catholic? She mentions that she is now in therapy but gives no hint as to what she moght have learned avbout herself, about her attaction for "bad boys", about the possible root causes for this type of behavior. Can this type of behavior be avioded? Are there just certain females that need the "juice" of this type of roller coaster relationship that the "bad boy" provides? Is this an addition? For all the parents, brothers and sisters out there who see loved ones following a similar route of attraction to the "rascal", some advice would have helped. Alas, Anicka gives n ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Unique account of a coach and his 2 sons
This book is a treasure for anyone who has a link to college basketball in new jersey.I personally know at least 5 people mentioned in the book. The day by day account of mr. hurley's life as a coach and father is great, butsome of the 'harsher' realities of grooming inner city young men to besuccessful basketball players are missing.

4-0 out of 5 stars A View into Wilt's Head!
Some of the reviewers have given Wilt's book a hard time, but I felt he accomplished what he set out to do. He has given us a glance into his thoughts and ideas about so many different things. We truly have a look at the way he thought, whether we agree with his opinions or not. I certainly did not agree with everything he had to say, but gained insight into his life and saw that some of his opinions were filled with good insight. I found it interesting to see how he and other NBA stars interacted according to him. I'd love to hear their opinions as well. I enjoyed hearing about some of the stars from the old days. Wilt stood up for them and how they should be better recognized today. I'd love to see DVD's available with clips from all of the old stars. Wilt thought highly of himself and that is obvious. But, let's face it, who else ever scored 100 points in a game? He does deserve some recognition. Wilt certainly did not live a perfect life, but he enjoyed himself and experienced much and you can learn about many details if you read this book. You'll find it interesting.

3-0 out of 5 stars INTERESTING
WILT HAS MANY OPINIONS AND THOUGHTS. IN THIS BOOK HE EXPRESSES THEM FROM START TO FINISH. I AGREE WITH MANY OF HIS INSIGHTS. HE WAS A VERY INTELLIGENT GUY WHO ENJOYED THE FINE THINGS IN LIFE, CARS, WOMEN, FINE WINES, LARGE HOUSE ETC. WILT LIVED LARGE. THIS IS A NICE READ FOR FANS OF THE GREAT WILT. NICELY PUT TOGETHER.

5-0 out of 5 stars You Gotta Love It, Baby
This is a refreshing and amusing book about a man who has made the NBA a more entertaining place for the basketball fan. You do not have to be a Rod Hundley fan, a Utah Jazz fan, or even a basketball fan to enjoy hisopinions and experiences. From his troubled childhood to his golden years,Hundley speaks his mind in a fresh and honest manner. The effort put in byMcEachin to edit and organize 60 years of Hundley's stories and anecdotesis obvious, and the result is a thoroughly enjoyable book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent book about Hundley's basketball experiences.
Hot Rod Hundley was the first player drafted in the 1957 NBA draft. He played six years for the Lakers in Minneapolis and Los Angeles.Following his playing career, Hot Rod has remained active is the sport. He iscurrently the play by play announcer for the Utah Jazz.Since 1957, he hasseen or played with or against almost every great NBA player. In his book, which is basically his basketball autobiography, Hundley analyzes the gameand its great and not so great players.Hot Rod Hundley was a showybasketball player;he was fancy and "cool" long before theybecame essentials in the professional game. His writing is much the sameas his game was.His book is a good interesting read. His style is bothconversational and informative. He gives his opinions freely andunhesitantly. He can be lavish with his praise and unsparing with hiscriticism. If you are a basketball fan or a Hot Rod Hundley fan, you willenjoy this book. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars A warm and entertaining young basket ball story
I really liked the Jameer book. I found it a fun and easy read, that had a story with lots of energy and drive. I enjoyed the many page-long stories from family and friends of Jameer as a suplement to the exciting main story. Together they presented a close and personal picture of a young athlete, at the same time that it did not become your standard, one-dimensional "from rags to riches"-story. The story is told by people who love and care about Jameer, and their sentiments make the book the hart-warming story it is.

5-0 out of 5 stars Jameer - Personal, Informative and Highly Recommended
Simply put, OUTSTANDING!Elaine and Pete, bring Jameer to life! From his early years all the way to the NBA the reader receives an up-close and intimate look into the life of Jameer Nelson. This is simply one of the best sports biographys that I have ever read. This book is not only for the sports enthusiast or Jameer fan. For, it is also takes a personal look at his family and friends. We see his/their dedication and his/their devotion that helped shape the person we all know as Jameer. As a side note, it also has a very positive message about Chester, Pennsylvania, Jameer's hometown and the mutual love and respect they (Jameer and Chester) have for one another.Overall, a wonderfully informative and personal read.I highly recommend this book to anyone. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Especially for girls with an interest in sports
A Drive To Win is the biography of Nancy Lieberman-Cline who, as a tomboy, was better at baseball and as fierce as any boy on the football field. Nancy had always been a sports enthusiast. But when she discovered basketball, she knew she had found her sport. Overcoming her mother's objections and the other kids' taunts. Nancy played every chance she got and when she heard the announcement that the U.S. Women's team was holding tryouts for the Olympic team, she snuck out to the tryouts -- but even if she made the team, would her mother let 15-year old Nancy play? Highly recommended reading, especially for girls with an interest in sports, A Drive To Win is the debut title for Wish Publishing's "Anything You Can Do...New Sports Heroes For Girls" series and focuses not only on one remarkable young woman's struggle to become a competitive athlete, but shows how participation in sports can help girls to grow up and become successful women.

4-0 out of 5 stars Inspiring reading for kids - librarian's 4 star award
If the first book is indicative of the series, then kids can look forward to an exciting time.It is a rare treat when an author can take the life of an athlete who has had a singular pursuit of their sport and make it an enriching, enjoyable story.5-0 out of 5 stars A Real Trail Blazer

5-0 out of 5 stars Great read
This should win a Pulitzer this year. The content is tremendous, full of insightful garb about the most cantankerous coach to ever pace the hardwood sideline. Plus, one writer in particular really bolsters this literarymasterpiece, James D. Horne. Buy this book while supplies last.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good view of the career of Norm Stewart at Mizzou
This is a very good view of the overall career of Norm Stewart at Mizzou. It is unique in it is a compilation of articles from the Columbia Tribune starting with a game in February, 1956 through his retirement this pastApril, 1999.For the avid Missouri basketball fan it will bring back alotof fond memories and things long forgotten. For the newer fan, it willpoint out just what kind of coach Norm Stewart was and bring out a side ofhim alot of people don't know about. For just the rabid basketball fan, itis an interesting look at some of the great upsets by Missouri basketballteams, such as over Notre Dame in 1980 in the NCAA and Louisville in 1982,along with the battles within the Big 8.It's an easy read with alot ofgood pictures. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars It's Awesome, Baby!
This is a must read for any college basketball fan. "Dickie V" lets every reader know what it feels like to experience big time college hoops from the best seat in the house. Also includes stories about Jim Valvano, Rick Pitino, Coach K, MJ, and everyone who has influenced his life in broadcasting over the last 25 years. Funny, heart-felt, inspiring, and down right a good read. You won't regret it.

4-0 out of 5 stars The Wonderful World of Vitale
If you like college basketball or Dick Vitale you'll enjoy this book. Dick spends quite a bit of time going through his humble beginnings at the embryonic Espn.Hard to remember it being a start-up.Actually he goes back further describing getting fired as a coach and what a mental challenge that was.
4-0 out of 5 stars He's not just any Dick. He's Dick Vitale!
I found this to be a fascinating review of the college basketball scene from a viewpoint rarely taken, from inside the "Coach K Waste Disposal Tunnel at Cameron Indoor Stadium," where many Duke fans in the media hang out, and discuss matters of interest to Duke athletic supporters. Dick Vitale really dares to go where no other living soul would. Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars interesting
This book is a good book, but don't buy it if your just a fan of Vince Carter. It's more about the franchise of the Raptors and the business of sports and the NBA. Chapter 5 is the best chapter in any book I've ever read, if you interested in the business side of sports and advertising. So to a sports fan this is a very interesting book, but to someone thats only in it to find out about Vince Carter, it's not a good choice.

5-0 out of 5 stars Review For Drive: How Vince Carter Conquered the NBA
This is a very good book showing what the world of the NBA, Vince Carter lives in. It goes a little into the problems of Butch Carter, the Raptors organization , and Tracy Mcgrady's rise to stardom. Mostly it involves what Vince Carter, a rising superstar, has done to get where he is in the NBA. Overall it shows the side of the NBA you don't normally see. It' a very interesting book. I enjoyed this book very much and I think you will too.

2-0 out of 5 stars No need to bother with this one
As an avid sports and basketball book reader, I'm glad to say that truly great sports books (ie. A Season on the Brink by John Feinstein or David Halberstam's Michael Jordan and the World He Made) actually exist.Sadly though, Chris Young's effort at documenting Vince Carter and the Toronto Raptors' history does not even come close. In fact, in terms of both content and interest sustainability, it pales in comparison even next to Shaquille O'Neal's lighthearted autobiography, "Shaq Talks Back."Young is certainly a decent newspaper journalist, however, the book offers little beyond typical newspaper sports journalism.Essentially, what you get is a montage of newspaper articles about the history of the Raptors and not very much about Vince Carter. His life story, significant relationships with other people, and important events are all neglected and instead we get page after page of description of Carter's otherworldly leaping ability. Thanks Chris, but we could get that by watching TV.Also, the identity dilemma that appears to be the thrust of Young's portrayal of Carter, that of being a star athlete while trying to be a nice guy at the same time is imminently laughable.Read more
