2-0 out of 5 stars I didn't love it
She's Got Handle is an inspiring story. It conveys very important themes, including the idea of a strong family background, hard work, and love. However, I do not believe that the book was very well-written. It used a large amount of slang, and had several grammatical errors. The book also often went off on tangents about irrelevant information. This made the book difficult and tedious to finish.

4-0 out of 5 stars She's got handle is a winner.
Being in high school was never like this for me!I played sports but was never recruited from any colleges, much less a top ten Division I school. Its amazing to learn about what these kids go through while being recruited to play at that level. The story of Nicole Louden is the story of very bright and motivated young women making her way through her inner-city high school basketball career and the recruiting process.5-0 out of 5 stars A touching journery that makes you love basketball even more
The author does a terrific job chronicling the journey of a young girl whose dream it is to play Division I college basketball and then the WNBA. The book takes you through the struggles, the victories, and everything in-between about a high school female basketball player attempting to beat some very long odds. Growing up in a violent, poverty stricken, drug-infested New Jersey neighborhood, SHE GOT HANDLE describes how an extremely ambitious girl uses her enormous basketball talents, overwhelming support from her family, and terrific smarts to get an athletic scholarship from a top educational university. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Rags to Riches
From Michael Jordan's humble beginnings to his NBA superstardom, Jordan: the man, his words, his life by Mitchell Krugel is a brilliant account of the life of Michael Jordan on and off the court. At first, the book hooked me instantly because it told you what to expect and the information was presented very well. The author's introduction was phenomenal. What really interests the reader is how the author includes his own opinions about the events of Michael's life. For example, the author expresses his emotions in such an intense way about the tragic murder of Michael's father, James Jordan, in downtown Chicago. After the halfway point of the book, I concluded that this biography goes into a lot of depth as far as his spectacular college and professional basketball career. Overall, this book is an excellent account of Michael's public as well as his personal life.

4-0 out of 5 stars My review
The Man, His Life, His Words, by Mitchell Krugel. This book showed the many ways Michael Jordan became the great player he did. This shows his most memorable moments and his worst ones. One of his worst was when he didn't make the basketball team in his sophomore year in high school. After he was cut, he got every morning at 6a.m. to work with the varsity basketball coach and worked on all his areas he was lacking in.He ended up being an all-american at Laney High School. One of his most memorable moments was when he won 3 straight national championships with a team that did not even have a winning record the year before he came. This book also shows his struggle with trying to balance super-stardom with fatherhood. It also shows his struggles he had with him being too impatient with his teammates.I recommend this book to anyone into basketball because this book is inspiring and fun to read.

4-0 out of 5 stars A Great Biography of MJ Himself
I like to read biographies of athletes but so many times they do not explain the athlete's life, game, how he gets ready for a game or how he deals with all the critism. This biography is just the oposite and I feel they explain every thing about what Michael Jordan does and who he really is.Another reason why I give this book 4-stars is because it is not often that you get to hear what the athlete really thinks about the critism or how they handle it, or any thing to deal with there life outside the game. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars an ex-player must
This is the second Bill Reynolds book that I have read.Loved them both.I found his descriptions taking me back to high school and the playground. It brought back a lot of memories and also made me think about how Iprioritized basketball for so many years.5-0 out of 5 stars An engaging personal memoir of interest to all ex-jocks.
Bill Reynolds is certainly one of America's finest sports journalists. "Glory Days" addsto that luster. While some may dismiss it as a purely personal account of one's growing up, it is a lot more. It is a bookto be read and enjoyed by all former star athletes, high school orcollege, who realized at some subsequent point in their life that they hadto move on but did not want to let go of the one thing that they had workedat while growing up A disclaimer: Bill was a fraternity brother of mineat Brown. ... 1-0 out of 5 stars kobe is a baby
i don't care if you like this review or not, but kobe should realize now what he had w/ shaq: the best player in the game, and now that it's his team they are not even going to make the playoffs- and kobe cares too much what the media says about him- blaming everyone else and telling on shaq and his "hush money" and karl malone "harassing" his wife-shut up kobe and just play your selfish game

5-0 out of 5 stars Kobe the story of NBA's young...
The book Kobe is one of my all time favorites. It talks about the life of Kobe Bryant. Kobe is my all time favorite basketball player along with Michael Jordan. I see a lot in Kobe like in mj. This book talks about the life of the young rising star Kobe Bryant and how he got to where he is now. It is a great book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Love Basketball
"The Story of the NBA's Rising Young Star Kobe Bryant" great for Lakers' fans. If you like basketball you will like this nonfiction book. Joseph Layden .I thought that the book was very easy to read and young children could read it by themselves. In my mind he is the best player ever. It the best book I ever read. I like the book, because I like to play basketball too.Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Solid, but lacking the 'Thunder'
If you want an entertaining look at Darryl Dawkins and basketball, this is a good choice to read.Dawkins takes the reader on a fast-paced, fun ride through the many stops on his roller-coaster career. This is not to say thet Dawkins isn't honest about the sometimes painful truth. He does admit some less-than-flattering things, but mostly he just glosses over his own weaknesses or shortcomings.Given his history and reputation, this was pretty much expected.
4-0 out of 5 stars AN ENTERTAINING READ
DAWKINS TELLS THE STORY OF HIS LIFE IN THIS EASY TO READ TALE. I FOUND HIM TO BE FUNNY, CANDID AND INTERESTING. HE USES A LOT OF WORDS AND TERMS THAT MAY NOT BE FOR ANYONE UNDER 18. DAWKINS WAS PURE POWER FOR THE 76ERS DURING HIS CAREER WITH THEM. HE COULD BREAK BACKBOARDS AND SHATTER THE GLASS AROUND THEM. HE WAS STRONG AS A BULL BUT GOT IN FOUL TROUBLE VERY OFTEN. HE CAME TO THE PROS STRAIGHT FROM HIGH SCHOOL. VERY UNUSUAL FOR THE TIMES. HIS LIFE OFF THE COURT IS MORE INTERESTING THAN ON. HIS VARIOUS ADDICTIONS TO ALCOHOL, DRUGS AND SEX HURT HIS PLAY WHICH SHOULD HAVE BEEN MUCH MORE THAN IT WAS. I LIKE THIS BOOK BUT BE AWARE OF THE LANGUAGE AND SEX TERMS.

4-0 out of 5 stars solid read

3-0 out of 5 stars Are America's Book Editors On Strike?
This is the third consecutive book I've read that is badly in need of some editing.Let's start with the front cover, which displays the following quote from sportswriter Dick Schaap: "The definitive biography . . ."Really? The book's copyright date is 2004 . . . Dick Schaap DIED in December of 2001.
5-0 out of 5 stars One Of The Best
Being a loyal Laker fan of the 70's, I had to read this book on one of my favorite players. This in-depth book will not disappoint. The book does reveal alot that went on behind the scenes and not all of it is in a positive light.Still, Wilt was not just a great basketball player, he was a warm, genuine human being. They just don't make them like this anymore.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Best Wilt book ever
If you want to learn about Wilt Chamberlain and can only pick up one book, this is the book. The most factual account of his life ever written, and unlike Wilt's autobiographies, this one isn't interested in putting forth a myth.Much of Wilt's life was indeed larger than life, and the book covers them, and at the same time, the author doesn't cover up Wilt's faults. He interviews countless people who knew Wilt and covers his life from all of the angles. You learn about his achievements, his greatness, and his faults.Too bad all biographies can't be this good.

3-0 out of 5 stars He's jealous, but not in the way you think
If the game's fixed, then how is Charles Barkley any better than Micheal Jordan by getting money, power and fame from it-- or at least, how does he have any room to talk, just because Jordan profits MORE?He should be suing the NBA for running a crooked game, not blaming one of its pawns. I think that he just doesn't want to bite the hand that feeds him, so he instead acts like a jealous dog and bites a pampered pet.

3-0 out of 5 stars one more word
I have mixed feelings about Michael Jordan. On the one hand, he is a great athlete.I respect his work ethic. He has turned in a number of great performances and is no doubt one of the greatest to have ever played the game of basketball.1-0 out of 5 stars JEALOUS

4-0 out of 5 stars Despite losing, Conroy scores
Although I'm not a basketball player or even a sports fan, I couldn't put this book down. The book is really about the coming of age of a young man, as seen through the experience of an intense basketball season at a military academy. The writing is full of wonderful metaphors, and smooth and easy to read. The emotional journey--like other Conroy books--is intense. The difference here is that the experience is so real. He's describing real people, and the narrator is Conroy himself. The depiction of what goes on at The Citadel may shock you with its brutality. Its amazing that Conroy can recreate his senior year in college so clearly thirty years later. Thoroughly enjoyable. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Fascinating subject slowly delivered
I love basketball and always thought Al was a great guy. While I looked forward to this book and am glad I read it, I cannot recommend it.Al is an interesting funny guy but that doesn't come out in the book. The bookreads clinically without the emotion of Al McGuire felt through the writer. I did enjoy hearing of his early life but it was too long.Same forBelmont Abbey.Along the way you do learn interesting facts like he had alosing record when hired at Marquette. But, generally, as much as I likedthe subject, the book did not live up.2-0 out of 5 stars Missing
Mr. Moran does an excellent job of recapping the Al McGuire era at Marquette University. He also tracks the career of Coach Al especially well. The book was a labor of love, but the author should have more closelylooked at the "whole" Al McGuire. That's why the book is, atbest, average.5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent recap of the life and career of a true character
The book is must reading for those of us who only remotely knew of the specifics of the Coach. It provides wonderful insight into a great leader, who never gave up his individuality, and certainly has made a permanentplace for himself in college basketball. The author did an excellent job ofresearch and provides a throughly researched journey into Al's life.Congratulations, Declan.I look forward to your next venture. It is goodto see success coming from St. Pascal's ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Great if you're a Purdue fan or Keady fan/follower
As a Purdue fan and graduate, I really enjoyed the book.I thought that he gave some interesting insight into player stories and other off court issues, both personal and coaching related, that were unknown to me for the most part.I also found out some interesting things about his relationships with Bob Knight, Michael Jordan, and his summer Olympic colleagues and players.
2-0 out of 5 stars Dissapointing
This was disappointing. It's only 180 pages, and it's not a full sized book. It reads like a Cliff Notes of Purdue basketball history under Keady. I remember most of the big games (at Purdue) that Keady discusses in the book, but he adds little that I didn't already know. The whole thing feels rushed, like they were way behind deadline and had to get it done, or maybe his heart wasn't really into the project in the first place. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars nice companion piece to Smith's memoirs
Nice companion piece to Smith's own memoirs ("A Coach's Life").A less complete portrait of Smith's inner life and interests off the court than the autobiography, but a more complete, and in many ways a more compelling, account of his public life as coach/power broker of what amounts to a multimillion dollar franchise. In this sense it is more entertaining than Smith's book -- a more open treatment of the recruiting process (including the ones that got away), the management of the Nike contract, the rivalry with Duke etc.5-0 out of 5 stars As a life long fan, the greatest book I've read.
I have been a tarheel fan for my whole life, I met "THE MAN" as a kid. He is just as portrayed in the book. This was a book that I could not put down. The best book I've read. Great work Art.

4-0 out of 5 stars Hard Core UNC Fans will find new information
I recommend this book to true, long-time dedicated UNC fans.Probably no one else could read the whole thing. You will remember each game from your own perspective but Chansky gives you the details from behind the scenes. Many tid-bits and juicy morsals to satisfy your curiosity about the programand about the man.If you like Smith, this book will affirm your respectfor him.If you don't like him, this book will not change your mind. Smith is presented mostly sympathetically, but his flaws are too numerousto hide, yet for the true fan, they are expected and when seen within thecontaxt of his life, they are forgivable.I was pleasantly surprised byhow much I liked it.Also, I recently read "Playing for Keeps"about Jordan. There is no redundancy here. ... 3-0 out of 5 stars A Hoosier Prospective
I bought this book recently for something to do and being from Indiana, im always interested in high school basketball. This book jumped around and gave me infomation about the NBA and different aspects of the game that you can not began to compare to the high school game in Indiana. Yes the high school game in Indiana has changed but no where near the NBA game. I recommend this book for you are an out-of-state person wanting a good basketball book but as far as an in state person wanting to know more about the game we love in our backyard this is not it.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Great Read!
I bought this as a gift for my dad.I'm always looking for a good sports book for him for his birthday and I've read Wertheim's articles and his tennis mailbag in Sports Illustrated. But when this book came in the mail I picked it up and I couldn't put it down.I'm not even a basketball fan!I loved the writing- Wertheim is witty and perceptive, and I never realized how fascinating Indiana basketball is from a sociological point of view. When my dad finally got to read his gift (after I finished) he loved it and sent a copy to my uncle in Boston, a big basketball fan.Highly recommend this book!

Wetheim's book is told in a series of vignettes, alternating chapters that detail the final season of an Indiana high school coach with chapters that address individual issues that effect the way basketball is played today around the country. Some of the areas covered include: agents, women's basketball, the globalization of the sport, college basketball, professional basketball, violence, and racism. We meet some of the players on the high school team, and see where they come from and why they play. Not all of the chapters are entertaining, but most of them are.

5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful reading!
Pistol Pete was my childhood hero and this book tells me an awful lot about him from people who knew him during different parts of his life. It's people talking about Pete in their own words and the stories and memories are rich and interesting. I especially like the Christian angle to the book, telling of Pete's conversion to Christianity and his evangelical work. Most of the stuff I've read on Maravich downplay that stuff, but I think it as important as anything else he ever accomplished. Nice bookfor sure.

4-0 out of 5 stars oral history
This biik is an oral history of Pete Maravich, the player and the person. It recounts the memories of various people who knew Pete as the Pistol and as just plain Pete.It gives a balanced view of his past and is especially interesting in recounting Pete's later days and his conversion to Christianity.A good read for people who may have read Pete's biography but want to see him through others eyes. ...
