Awesome Book!

Love this book, and I didn't even attend Notre Dame
This is an absolutely wonderful accounting of a man who had a vision of the proper place of athletics in American life. By the end, I had a tear in my eye, even though I have no direct connection to ND.

Inspirational

Good read
This is a follow-up to Bird's book Drive.It takes up at the end of his playing career and focuses on his post-playing career.He goes into the Olympic experience and the back pain that ended his career long before his skills had eroded.

Well Written
This is a very well written book of what happened in the Kobe case last year. Its incredible the case never went to trial after everything that happened.

Amazing
that a rich athlete can get away with rape by throwing money at the problem.

Hard to find -- but worth the read.
Jennifer Stevens and Jeffrey Scott Shapiro's summary of the Kobe Bryant drama will most likely be immortalized since the case has been settled and all parties -- including Bryant, the victim and their lawyers are bound to silence. Stevens and Shapiro covered the case up until February of 2004, but very little happened afterwards, leaving the reader with all the pertinent information, including what happened the night of the alleged attack and the police interviews with Kobe. It's a fast turning read, but good luck trying to find a copy in an actual bookstore. Either they're all sold out or maybe there was a recall for a new edition or something. It's pretty hard to locate a copy now. I remember seeing them in Borders when the book first came out, but ended up borrowing a copy from a friend after I had a hard time relocating the book offline. This book reads easily, but almost all of the authors bombshells including the police interview and 3 other women Kobe had strange encounters with has been verified by other sources. It's a fun read and unfortunately it's all there is since no one else has written another book on the case. I'm glad there was at least one book out there that covers all the main points and stories. I'd definitely recommend this book to anyone interested in a broad overview of the case and an inside look at who the main players are. ... Read more

Cracked Sidewalks and French Pastry
I purchased this book on Al McGuire as a gift for my father's 71st birthday.As a former basketball coach, he had been a strong admirerer of one of the most unique individuals in sports. Both me and my father highly recommend this for lovers of college basketball, especially for those who tend to march to the beat of a different drummer.I'm sure that even though Al McGuire isno longer with us he will be remembered whenever some young person is making the sign of the cross on his/her forehead before shooting a critical freethrow with his immortal statement that the "Nuns are Working the Beads."
An unusual coffee table-type book
This is a strange coffee table-type book.Author Kertscher apparently did not know Al McGuire personally, and this book is the product of a posthumous project of collecting McGuire-related photographs and quotes.Yet despite the lack of direct personal connection, the book does a good job of communicating the odd combination of street-level wisdom, humanity, and whimsy that made McGuire such an intriguing and compelling character to a generation of basketball fans and non-basketball fans alike.

Al McGuire has been truly captured through this book.The photos and quotes truly capture the man, the charachter, and the coach that was AL.Anyone who grew up around the legend, understood what he meant to the game, but I don't believe anyone has a true grasp until they have turned the pages of this book. ... A shining example
Clyde Drexler was always my favorite player not only for his on the court play but for his off the court demeanor.He was always friendly and a perfect gentlemen.This book just reenforces those attributes and shows a man who is content and proud of his career.

Great Book
Clyde the Glide was One of My Favorites when I was a Kid. he was always on point from Phi slamma Jamma to His days with Portland to Houston. He was a champion a Winner on the Court&Off the Court. this Book is cool because it gives his takes on various stages of his career also it has former players,coaches,etc.. who speak on what they thought of his Great career. Clyde Drexler is One of the Greatest Players Ever.

An Oregon native who loved watching The Glide
This was a great book about one of the nicest, classiest players the NBA has produced. Very insiteful, lots of good comments from family, friends, former coaches and players. I also have always loved reading anything that Kerry Eggers writes -- one of Oregon's best sports writers of all time.

Knight - good role model
This book gives an objective account of coach Knight at the beginning of his remarkable and continuing career.Isenhour's book is based on firsthand accounts and grounded in actual experiences and not best guesses.Knight is an extraordinry role model in perseverance and integrity despite the constant barrage of media critics.Coach Knight is a remarkable coach, demanding what more parents should demand -- academic excellence and personal excellence.

A Compelling Read
I've heard of Coach Bob Knight, but I am not a basketball fan. I got a strong recommendation of this book from a friend and I can't say that I'm disappointed that I read it. West Point not about celebs
Just the fact that this book is written tends to hold Bob Knight up as a role model, unfortunately. It needs to be said, he is not a role model for anyone, nonetheless for West Point. While it is nice to have known someone who has become a celeb (infamous celeb, concerning all that West Point is supposed to stand for), West Point is not about celebs. Great civil rights story reads like a novel
This book is an incredibly well written and well documented story that should be more widely read.It is an important history that many sports fans, and non-sports fans, will enjoy tremendously.It is an inspiration to us all, and offers many lessons and insights about overcoming racism.Thank you to the father-daughter authors for getting out this story!

A Masterful Job of Writing
Tom Graham and Rachel Graham Cody have done a masterful job of writing a book that will be enjoyed by anyone with either an interest in basketball or an interest in what transpired in the civil rights movement after World War II.If the reader like myself has an interest in both subjects then this book will be among the most interesting books written on the subjects.Written by highly educated and intelligent people the authors have approached the subject with diligence, energy, and passion.While nearly every sports fan knows of Jackie Robinson, few people know of Bill Garrett and his journey from a segregated grammar school in a small Indiana town to national acclaim as an All American at Indiana University.I loved this book.

THIS IS A BOOK BY SHAQUILLE O'NEAL CENTER FOR THE LOS ANGELES LAKERS. HE TELLS US SOME OF HIS LIFE AND CAREER IN THE NBA. MOST OF THE BOOK CONCERNS WINNING HIS FIRST CHAMPIONSHIP IN THE NBA. HE TOUCHES ON HIS TEAMATES, COACHES AND LIFE IN GENERAL IN THE NBA. I LIKED THIS BOOK AND I LIKE SHAQ, EVEN THOUGH HE IS A BIT FULL OF HIMSELF. HE ENJOYS LIFE AND IS VERY HUMAN. I RECOMMEND THIS BOOK TO LAKER AND BASKETBALL FANS.

Chick: His Unpublished Memoirs and the Memories of Those Who Loved Him
This book really brought Chick Hearn back to life for me...I LOVED IT!It contained so many facinating memories from Chick and those close to him.Also, the accompanying CD with excerpts of Chick's calls from many games cleverly strung together...his Chickisms....was an added treat.For anyone who followed Chick during his career I highly recommend this book!

Buck O'Neil and I
I was sorely disappointed.It was very poorly written to the point that as I read, I began to wonder if Ms. Hurtt had an editor.I expected more on how one deals with a May - December relationship; but instead what I got was a clothesline full of her dirty laundry. Why is Buck O'Neil bucking
Why is Buck O'Neil bucking the truth. This only makes him look veryfoolish. Why would he give this young ladies book his blessings and turnaround and say to the public that some of the things in the book a nottrue? he would be better off saying to the public/press he has no comment!rather than trying to make her look like a liar. It's almost as though heapprently still can not own up to the truth!! are he is trying to hidesomething? this young lady wrote her story and continued to have respectfor Buck O'Neil by even allowing him to read her manuscript after all hesubjected her two, before it was published. I beleave her story, and wishher much success and for her to remember that the TRUTH always prevails.She wrote the book to bring closure of him and all she went through intheir time together and he does not even have the decency to give closureto her. Buck O'Neil really needs to come out of denial. his presnt behavoirreally holds a familiar similarity upon which she had already described inher book of him (DOUBLE MINDED).

Great insight into women's game and top coach
This is a fun and easy read for any fan of the women's game, centered around the pivotal 1996 Olympic gold medal-winning team, which in many ways marked a turning point in establishing the foundation upon which the modern game is built.

(Especially if you're female!!) I think I will start reading the book from the beginning again tomorrow. It also meant more to me then maybe someone else because I have been to Tara's Camps and been able to interact with Jennifer Azzi and Katy Steding, and other players as well. Hmm...
This may look odd but I was trying to post someone else's review of my book that they e-mailed to me.I mean, why would I review my own book?I didn't even read it.

What a joke!
NBA players have no respect for the art of tattooing or the history of it-- they simply get tattoos to look tough and/or get attention. This book is about as superficial as the tattoos it portrays.

Tattoos and Sports
I was'nt that impressed with this book.I thought it was going to go into alot more detail and show better array of pictures.Most of the pictures you can see on the internet already.The pictures that new were very few and far in between.It is a nice book to add to a collection,if you like tattoos or sports.Not a hreat book to learn about the players tattoos and meanings or even to see pctures of them.Some pictures shown didnt even get explained in the book. ... dorothy parker writes a basketball book....
just wanted to say I loved Ms. King's book, " she's got next." it was refreshing to read about basketball written from her perspective. like ms. king, i grew up down south, which is sports-mad; but my alma mater was more of a football school. that is not to say my school's basketball team didn't have its moments; they made the final four a couple of times, plus they had shaq and chris jackson, so they did ok. some of the scenes which ms. king writes about basketball being played on the playgrounds of chicago and l.a. made me misty-eyed, they were so nostalgic. ms. king's self-depricating humor made her story more accessible and fun.plus the scenes which she coaches a youth team were also fun to read about. the urban flava comes through the prose easily. it's as if dorothy parker wrote a basketball book and tricked it out with some hip-hop beats...

Delightfull Story of a Trip We All Had to Take
This is a funny and inciteful book that looks into the life of a young lady as she moves from rural Arkansas to Chicago. Following a course that a lot of us have had to take she was lonely, bored, and generally unhappy. Eventually she remembered how much she had enjoyed playing basketball and turned to playingas a way to pass the time, meet people, develop a life.
I was forced to read this
and, boy, I'm glad I was.My grown son brought this to me thinking I would love it because he's played basketball all his life and I've played with him and coached when he was younger.This a great story about the way sports can effect a life.If you've ever known the pleasure of casual play (of any game, not just basketball and not just sports) you'll find this familiar, fun, and inspiring.I'm going to hit the local Y today and shoot around and try test my powers of observation against King's amazing ability and I can't wait to talk to strangers and strange people again as we work towards a common goal (across race, class, gender, and, at times, skill), an experience I've not had in years and now hope to make part of my retirement.Be forewarned there is some explicit language, but nothing shocking or gratuitous--the author is clearly a master of the language and using just the right words at just the right moment.What gifts some of us get!To have her basketball skills and writing abilitiy. . .this writer has been blessed. ... A man for Two histories
Unfortunately the media influences a lot of people to focus on the "perfectionist" Bob Knight.
Alford teaches that hard work and a good attitiude, pays off
Indiana basketball legend Steve Alford, describes what it was like playing for the General, Bob Knight. Alford shows us in the book the genius of Bob Knight. He also talks about the temper tantrums, mind games, and manipulations he and his teammates had to go through while playing for the General.In the book, he describes some of the war stories about coach Knight. Alford, talks about the brilliance of the General and how he made him become a better player and person. Pulls some punches
Alford admits that he cleaned up Knight's language in this book.Bob Knight was famous for swearing up and down the court and all around, sometimes even when the camera and microphone were on.Alford probably also had some selective memory since being a professional in basketball who would eventually go on to be a coach, he didn't need Bob Knight as an enemy.Alford and some other players admitted as much when Knight was fired from Indiana a few years ago that they weren't always as honest about what went on as maybe they could have been. I love it, but why doesn't Bevo?
I loved the book and found it very flattering of Bevo!I think that anyone interested in college basketball would find this book highly entertaining and informative!Unfortunately, when I asked Bevo to sign my copy, he refused and said it was unauthorized?Is this another case of someone taking advantage of Bevo?

Ohio "Hoosiers" at a tiny college
For fans of traditional basketball -- where the tradition means tiny uniforms, lousy floors, crowded gyms, transport by station wagon, and honing skills in a barn -- this is literally one for the record books. The college with 100 students took on the establishment and won the hearts of America's basketball fans and the general public through the person of one of the sports' most tragic figures. From scoring 116 points in fron of fewer than 200 people to playing to packed arenas from Boston to Kansas City, the ride was short, not always sweet, but memorable.

A GOOD EXAMPLE OF DIGNITY AND CLASS
LENNY WILKENS DOES A GOOD JOB RELAYING HIS LIFE AND CAREER. HE HAS ALWAYS BEEN AN EXAMOLE OF CLASS AND GOOD WORK ETHICS. I REMEMBER HIM WITH CAVALIERS IN THEIR EARLY YEARS TRYING TO MAKE THE TRANSITION FROM THE BOTTOM TO CONTENDER. HE HELPED ADD SOME LEADERSHIP AND EXPERIENCE FOR ALOT OF YOUNG PLAYERS. LATER ON HE WOULD BE THE MOST SUCESSFUL COACH IN CAVALIER HISTORY. I LIKED HIS BOOK AND AGREE HE WAS OVER LOOKED AS A PLAYER AND COACH. A VERY CLASSY INDIVIDUAL AND INTELLIGENT. A classy memoir from a classy individual
I was drawn to "Unguarded" primarily because I grew up with the Sonics coached by Lenny Wilkens. I remember the championship season he guided the team to, and have always rued the day he left the Sonics for other coaching endeavors. A classic (and classy) point guard
