5-0 out of 5 stars well worth the trip for everyone
My Dear Mr. Morgan, I can't thank you enough for writing the definitive book on the phenom that is LeBron. I learned so much about him, his friendships, his ability to overcome so many obstacles, and because of your book, I can't wait to see what the future holds for him. After reading your book, I was fascinated enough to catch the rest of his games, and have learned much about basketball and life from LeBron. My favorite passage is about Sr. Night. I have read this warm, sensitive passage several times, and never fail to cry when I read it. I have found the book to be a great read for all ages, and as a middle-aged woman who knew nothing about basketball before I read this book, I found that through LeBron and this book, I have learned that through basketball, you learn about life. How is that? Read the book and find out. I am eagerly looking forward to your next book, and thanks again, for the trip!

5-0 out of 5 stars APerson of Interest
I purchased this book to encourage my middle/high school special education students to read.I must admit that when I first added the book to the classroom library all the students did was look at the pictures, but eventually they began reading and became hooked. The best way to get reluctant readers to read is to find a book that interests them. This book really caught on!

2-0 out of 5 stars the magic is not in the book
A good book as far as it goes, but it doesn't go far into truth. Although Johnson recalls his early years, the lessons he learned about hard work, etc. this book reads like a fluff job.It would have been a lot better if he told the full truth.Anyone who has some experience with life knows that there is another side to the story.Intrestingly, this side is seldom heard.Pro athletes and other celebrities are usually portrayed in a glowing light that hide dark truths.Johnson claims that in the cities he played in there were usually many beautiful women who waited for the athletes. In the book it is implied that this is one of the perks of being a pro. Really? You hear of other athletes who take advantage of this and are slapped with paternity suits, the women are given hush money, the athletes pay for their education and then are dropped by the groupies,or the groupies are set up for life by the athletes. With all the thousands of women Johnson supposedly slept with you hear nothing about this, and outside of AIDS he didn't get any other sexually transmitted disease sleeping with all these women?I find that incredible, since anyone else would be seeing the doctor pretty often. Most of the groupies are beautiful because its easier to trap the athletes money with. Does anyone really believe that athletes will sleep with ugly women? These groupies aren't stupid. The hard truth is that people are selfish. They don't sleep with athletes or other celebrities because of their status, but what it will get for them ie, bragging rights, paternity suits, etc. Most athletes are notoriously tight-lipped about this. But sometimes the truth comes out.One nameless athlete said "If the public knew what's going on with groupies, the payoffs etc. sports would lose a lot of money."Its all about the money. This is why opposing evidence is suppressed and why you seldom hear about the dark side.Does anyone seriously believe that vested intrests who profit from the athletes image, who make money selling sports merchandise and everthing connected with it want the truth out? Yeah, right. This book is little more than propaganda. If Johnson were serious about helping people out, he would tell the full truth.Save your money.

5-0 out of 5 stars Magic
Earvin Johnson a.k.a Magic is a regular guy who is a nba legend who has aid, that' s what we all know, but at the reading of this book i found out, Earvin the man , how he felt when he found out he has aid , how much he got respect for other NBA players like Michael Jordan or Larry bird, it's a very interesting book,..., just buy it and enjoy it!

5-0 out of 5 stars A Must Read for all Sports Fans
I purchased a copy of this book after hearing Mr. Love speak to a crowd of over 300 people.I was engrossed in the book from the start and completed the read on my flight home. It is a definite must read for any athlete or person who enjoys sports and believes that life is more than just a game.It provides a human look at the sports world that is so often overlooked, candy-coated and glorified. The poignancy of this book is driven home when you are priviledged to hear Mr. Love speak, see his conquest over his disability and feel the passion he has for youths.

4-0 out of 5 stars Stunningly honest story thats too painful to believe...
It's amazing that a one-time NBA super-star ends up mopping floors, waiting on tables and enduring major abuse and embarrasment while trying to make ends meet...every NBA executive should read this to ensure that League policy does not allow this to happen again. I bought this to hear some inside details on one of my favorite NBA players of all time (I remember in 1974 going out to buy "Pro-Keds" sneakers for my season because that's what Bob Love wore)and came away stunned at what Love went through before re-claiming his life. I was vaguely aware that he'd had hard times post-retirement, but not at this level and this account, quite frankly, makes me admire him more. In brutally "straight-forward" writing he details all the problems that beset him and how his inner-strength and formidable character allowed him to keep his sanity and, ultimately, allowed him to get a semblance of dignity back. You won't get too much basketball detail here (his career takes on surprisingly few pages), but I think that this is Love's intent. This is the success story of a man resurrecting his life from the depths, some of which he helped make (failure to face his stuttering problem) and speaks to a higher level than basketball. My heart truly goes out to him and I'm very glad to hear that he's now doing well. An inspiring read!

2-0 out of 5 stars The Bob Love Story If it's Gonna Be, It's Up to Me
The book was a slow read in the beginning.I feel to much writing was spent on his early childhood and tended to be a bit boring. The sequence of events during that time didn't flow well, seemed as though you weregoing back and forth.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent and No Typos!
I think Mr. Willingham is reviewing the first edition of this book. I have seen a copy of that and there are many typos in that edition. I should know as I am a professional proofreader. But I have a copy of the second edition, the one that has the cover shown on this page, and I have found very, very few typos, and most of those small grammar things that you might find in any book. Considering this book is well over 400 pages I think it is presented very well. I do agree with Mr. Willingham that this book gives a lot of new information about the people around Coach during the Wooden Era. All in all, I find it an excellent read and a must for any Wooden follower.

3-0 out of 5 stars Informative, but what's the deal with the typos and errors ?
This book has a great deal of information about John Wooden, UCLA basketball, and many of the people who were involved with Coach Wooden during the "Wooden Era".However, this book is also FULL of typographical errors, grammar problems, and such. While it does not severly impact the content, it is frustrating and irritating for such a product that has so much potential.

4-0 out of 5 stars Must Read for "Bird" Fans
A great and truly under-rated sports book. Bob Ryan (the actual writer) is a long-time Boston Globe columnist and a terriffic writer. He captures the essence of Larry Bird, from his childhood to his journey through high school and college to his emergence as both a basketball legend in the NBA and a larger-than-life sports hero in Boston. You may like this book even if you don't care for basketball. You will definitely enjoy this book if you area a hoops fan. And if you are a Larry Bird fan and you haven't read this book... shame on you!

4-0 out of 5 stars Book review for Drive
Book review on Drive
4-0 out of 5 stars Lacks the "wow" factor.
This book is a good read about one of the greatest players to ever lace 'em up, but....it reads more like a review of his basketball career rather than a true look inside the man Larry Bird. It's a must read for any Bird or Celtic fan and would be a great addition to any personal library. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Tark
Great book.I was in LV, NV during Tark's tenure at UNLV.Tark originally got crosswise with the NCAA when he criticized them in his basketball column at Long Beach State. The NCAA never let go after that.UNLV administration unfortunately bought into the argument that a school can either be academically or athletically based and never understood the vision of a powerful synergistic relationship (i.e. USC, Notre Dame, TX, etc., etc.).The administration and anti-Tark boosters basically invited the NCAA in for an audit that took years. The end result was a severely truncated basketball dynasty and a huge hit in academic and adminstrative credibilty from UNLV's President Maxson on down.UNLV has not achieved significant academic standing and and has never recovered athletically. However, Tark is $2,000,000.00 richer secondary to prevailing over the NCAA in a court of law, in addition to his 1990 NCAA basketball court championship.

1-0 out of 5 stars Wetzel's facts not trustworthy - beware!
I have not and will not bother to read this book, as I would not trust any of the facts. As an example, Wetzel recently (Yahoo!, 4/2/06) published an article bashing the UCLA basketball program. The entire basis for this was a "quote" that Wetzel attributes to Bill Walton.Nothing could be further from thr truth!
4-0 out of 5 stars I suggest you buy it and read it, for it will make you laugh...
Boy, I was a huge UNLV fan while Tark was there, and I loved that team that beat Duke by 30 in the finals. Thus, I bought the book, and I enjoyed it.In virtually every chapter, there is a funny story or a simply outrageous story that I'm sure is true.Tark tells his story, and he seems to hold nothing back.Tark is truly unique.

5-0 out of 5 stars The day of 100
One of the more interesting points of this book is that the day of 100 points kind of became forgotten. The authir attributes one of the reasons to Wilt himself who stopped talking about the game.
5-0 out of 5 stars The Big Dipper
As you have probably read by now: In a basketball game back in March of 1962, Wilt Chamberlain, scored one hundred points for Philadelphia in a game against the New York Knickerbockers, an amazing achieve-ment in any era. Back in 1962, the National Basketball Association was undeveloped and the players traveled on buses and trains. Along came Wilt Chamberlain a strong and coordinated seven-footer and changed the dynamics of the NBA. The author conducting more than 250 interviews to recreate in detail this amazing performance that had not been televised at the time.

5-0 out of 5 stars Gary Pomerantz has written a truly outstanding book
I thought I knew a lot about the NBA in the early 60's until I read this great history of not only a great player, but of the NBA when it was going through a period of change.

5-0 out of 5 stars Playing for Keeps Michael Jordan and the Wolrd He Made
This book is the best Jordan book I ever read. Lots of great details about JOrdan was included. This is also my first time reading David Halberstam's book. After I read "Playing for Keeps Michael Jordan and the Wolrd He Made" I think I will read more books by David Hablerstam. This book not only showed about Michael Jordan's life but also mention about how NBA change over time in the 80's and the 90's. This book is just amazing so i highly recommand people to buy this book and read it!

5-0 out of 5 stars The best sports book I have ever read
This book doesn't just tell you why Michael was such a great athlete, it tells you why. From his ultra (and I mean insane) competitiveness to his landmark athleticism. I began to understand that Michael Jordan is an argument for theism. There seems to be no way Jordan could have existed without God specifically forming him to be a basketball player. Many people talk about Jordans jumping ability but few speak about his olympic-type speed. Combine that with the ulitmate desire to win and you have a guy that could remain the greatest ever for a LONG period of time.5-0 out of 5 stars Michael Jordan is *awesome*
This is a book about a nearly textbook case of a type A personality. Michael Jordan is the consummate perfectionist and competitor. From his early days as an unknown kid at Laney High in Wilmington to his days with Dean Smith at Carolina to his days of scoring championships and NBA titles with the Bulls, this book has the entire history, and it makes fascinating reading.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Overall a very good read
This was quite an enjoyable read. I was fascinated by the rise and rise of this basketball prodigy due to all the hype surrounding him. There is no doubt that Lebron James is one hell of a talent after seeing many of his highlight plays on T.V, and on the net. This book details his performances in school for ST Vincent-ST Mary and other events, the frenzied interest from fans and media wanting to see him perform, sport commentators and coaches raving about him being the best thing in the sport of basketball, hummergate, speculation about his future career plans, and the fight for his feet between Adidas and Nike in which the latter won because the former could not offer huge amounts of money in the bidding war with its major rival. Great stuff.

5-0 out of 5 stars Winnebago!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
This was a AWESOME book.It really looks into the real life of LEBRON JAMES and shows you his trip into stardom. This book is great if you like watching basketball careers grow because is probably the most popular young basketball players in the world today and this book did a really good job of showing how LEBRON is always improving his game.I have read a ton of sports autiobiographies and this one was probably the most inspiring because it took an indept look at the personal and also basketball part of LEBRON JAMES life.

1-0 out of 5 stars not good
The Book totally skips from 1948-1962.As successful as Wooden was, he did have some failures. The book failed to mention them.I am a huge UCLA and WOoden fan, but the book needs to shed some light also on his failures as coaching. He was not a perfect coach.Bisheff is writing pretty much a biased book.I think he did cover Wooden very well, but left out over 20 years.

5-0 out of 5 stars FinestJohn Wooden Biography
This splendid biographical study details many obscurely known facets of John Wooden's public and private life such as that he was a schoolteacher at one time. It especially excels on describing Wooden's family life and his continuing friendship with his former players after he retired from coaching at U.C.L.A. in 1975. It also updates the reader on what activities have transpired in the lives of Coach Wooden's former players after their collegiate basketball playing days.
5-0 out of 5 stars Best on Wooden
This bio by Steve Bisheff of the OC Register is the best on Coach that I've read. I've read everything on Coach Wooden and couldn't put this one down. It took me back 40+ years when I first began to take notice of the Coach and his Bruins. What a great celebration of the career and life of the greatest coach and teacher there's ever been. Without painting him as perfect this bio highlights the character of a man who didn't just coach basketball players, but taught youing men about life. What's amazing is that40-50 years later his boys are successful in life because of his influence and not afraid to proclaim their love for their Coach. This is a must read especially for Wooden/UCLA fans ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars About Allen Iverson
This book is about Allen Iverson and his life and how it was like to grow up where he lived. Iverson lived in NYC where people that he hated would try to start a fight with him. His friends would have to keep an eye on him. Allen Iverson then tried out for a team to keep him out of trouble. Then he started to play basketball and that worked because they weren't able to mess with him. Then Iverson grew up to be a professional basketball player. Iverson then played for the Sixers and became MVP. His life was really hard because his mom would stay on top of him but his mom was nice. Iverson then met a girl and she became his girlfriend and then they had a baby. Iverson just kept playing basketball and his wife was proud of him because he played so well and that's all about Allen Iverson.

3-0 out of 5 stars Honest self appraisal
Starks does a good job here detailing his life and whats most rewarding is his confession of his errors and failures on and off the court. That is this book's strong points.
5-0 out of 5 stars Great book about a great man
john starks was my idol growing up.Before he came to the knicks they were very mediocre. As he says in the book his rise coincided with the knicks title contension throughout the 90's.The book was very good and gave great insight into the man before his career.I was shocked when i read that he used to sell drugs and had been in jail.i followed everything about him back in the day and i remember never hearing about his father so it surprised me to hear that he met his father a couple times.anyway i lived and died with starks the dunk was this city's highest high and 2-18 well u do the math.i recommend this book to anyone who loved a good underdog story about a man with a heart as big as the big apple

5-0 out of 5 stars Why I Love John Starks
I raced through reading this autobiography of John Starks, mainly for personal reasons. The rise of John Starks as a New York Knick corresponded with a lot of overcoming personal struggles in my own life, and I've always felt a deep connection with his story, his explosiveness as a player and as a person, his perpetual teetering on the edge of self-wreckage, and with his continuing maturity and enormous heart that he always brought to the table. This book is hardly a sophisticated read, so if you're looking for that, go elsewhere. But if you look at John Starks as I do, as a true phenomenon of character and class, as someone who broke through barrier after barrier, tripped over his own bad habits along the way and still always remained deeply resolute in his belief in himself, then you'll love hearing how his voice comes through the writing of Dan Markowitz.Learning about the chaotic and reckless background of John's life reminded me of how gritty and passionate he was as a player, how his unstoppable desire shook the NBA world. But even in a moment like "The Dunk," John always remained a humble, down to earth man, someone undisturbed by the glow of fame, even more human because of the doubt that always followed his brilliant success.I wish he could have won a championship and have his number retired at the Garden, but in a way, even though his "2 for 18" night left fans like me forever hungry, the dramatic ironies that occupy his life story and the peace that he discovers within himself allow me to savor the tales he tells in this book, as I will forever be inspired by one of the most unique and lovable characters in the history of New York sports. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Yao story interesting; broader Chineses history is fascinating
I am NOT a huge sports nut...you know the kind who rattles off stats and knows all the players, but I really enjoyed this book. The story of Yao Ming was very interesting especially as it interlaces with China's history.I think it gives a very interesting look into the evolution of Chinese sports, politics and government. It kept me interested and I really looked forward to picking it up again every evening to read.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good But Hardly Profound Bio of Yao Ming
This book is a very readable biography of Yao Ming.
1-0 out of 5 stars Unsubtantiated Racist Drivel
This book is full of unsubtantiated racist drivel. The premise is that the Chinese can't play basketball.Lamaar does not source his claims - it's just like that he's making up stuffs from thin air.

5-0 out of 5 stars just a great life!
i start loving the NBA because of dennis!! i saw him ones in tv in europe!! and i start to watch the NBA !! i was reaqding the book the first time 1997 in german!!i gave it to a friend and never got it back!! i love the story about his life and all the questin he ask people and what he have done before he was a superstar!!!
2-0 out of 5 stars Pretty much a solid heap of pity party and rogue bragging
As a longtime basketball fan, I was at first anxious to see what I would find in a tell all novel of one of the best rebounders and all around defensive players of the game. What I found was horrible talk about women and other players.Rodman's racist comments against white people are enough to scoff at no matter what color a persons skin is.His comments of "black" players being better than whites is just a terrible shameful label to put upon all of those who play the game.Would have loved to hear what Larry Bird, John Stockton, and Jerry West had to say when they heard that one!
3-0 out of 5 stars It has ceased to be relevant
Dennis Rodman was a fascinating bad boy who wasn't afraid of mouthing off about anyone. His book is full of a very few good stories and plenty of complaints about fellow players, basketball management, coaches, everyone. He's bitter and angry, not full of interesting anecdotes. Most of this has ceased to be relevant as his heyday of shock value has passed. For someone not intimately involved in the mid to late 1990's basketball scene, none of the information retains relevancy as time passes. This might be good as a history book for a true fan, but if you lived through the Rodman heyday, you probably picked up his memoir back then.

4-0 out of 5 stars Sir Charles Shoots and Scores!
I read this book over a year ago, and continue to recommend it to friends (people of color and non-people of color alike). It is among the best books that I read last year (certainly the easiest read about issues of race/ethnicity). It exceeded my expectations: I could hardly put it down! While some chapters are somewhat informal, that is part of its charm. It reads as though Charles is sitting in the living room telling the story. I appreciate the diversity of celebrities that he assembled for this book. While it may remind some of "People Magazine", there lies its strength. Sir Charles' book will touch every person who is affected by race issues in America, be they an educator, a rabbi, or President of the United States, if they make themselves available. I recommend it highly!

5-0 out of 5 stars Required Reading
This book should be required reading for every African American family in this country and particularly our schools. It speaks candidly about the things WE need to do to pull ourselves out of the downward spiral we find ourselves in. Anyone who does not like this book is because it gives us accountabiity for improving our position. It clearly spells out that this is about economic diversion and that is from where all power and financial wealth is derived. And, it shows that even the likes of Tiger Woods suffered rascism; perservered and over came. I am buying multiple copies to give to my adult sons and to other friends and family.

5-0 out of 5 stars Sir Charles on point!
As a non-sports fan, books by athletes tend to bore me silly aside from ones with strong historical value. A co-worker recommended this to me and I could not put it down.
