Static Apnea...
This book was amazing and inspiring.
Good Book, So Sad
I just finished this book.I read the whole thing in 24 hours.It is definitely a hard book to put down, I just kept wanting to know what happened next (even though I knew of Audrey's fate before I started the book).It makes you think of your own life and relationships. I truly feel for Pipin and can't imagine losing a love like the one he and Audrey had together.I don't think he would have ever put her in harm's way intentionally.At the end, you wish it was a book of fiction.I recommend this book to anyone, it is a fascinating sport.I want to read more from Pipin and see the James Cameron film, if it is still coming out?

She knew the risks
My first thought on finishing this book was addressed to Pipin--"You killed her!". I do feel that his obsession with the sport and attaining new records abused the trust of his less experienced wife and pushed her into a dive she may not have been prepared for. However, VeganGurl makes a good point that Audrey was herself quite aware of the safety precautions (or lack thereof) being taken on the dive and was free to pull out or insist on changes at any time. She was by all accounts an intelligent young woman and not a helpless puppet to her husband's ambitions. If there is any blame to be assigned for this tragic event, she must take her share. I can't imagine undertaking something so dangerous without checking and doublechecking my equipment *myself*, but then I've never been very "team"-oriented. Having said that, I found this a compelling read. Pipin is clearly a man of deep emotion and seems to have benefited from self-examination and soul-searching over the last few years. No, it's not literary, but it tells Pipin and Audrey's story simply, in Pipin's own words. Whatever one thinks of the circumstances around the fatal accident, or of the sport itself, one can't help but feel deep sorrow for everyone involved.

Good Read !
You don't have to be a fan of Ike to enjoy this book.You'll learn a lot about Mike and tournament fishing reading this book.I read this book in one sitting and have thought about picking it up for another round on several ocassions.

Garbage
What a total waste of time this book was. I read, or should I say endured, about 60-pages of it before wanting to throw it out a closed window. No story-line, just some incoherent ramblings. He would have been better to take the year off and do a creative writing course.

Over Rated
This book is ok - not excellent - if you give it 5 stars you really need to read some more books. It is somewhat interesting in describing the life of a surfer but its extremely repetitive, it drags on and its lacking in any action and that certain something that seperates the wheat from the chafe.

Elmer Keith was referred to as the dean of American gun writers and that may have been an honest title. He wrote about cartridges and firearms as much as about hunting and the outdoors.

Book does not live up to its catchy subtitle
"The Mind of Bill James: How a Complete Outside Changed Baseball" delivers better on the first part of the title.

One sign of a great, compelling biography, I think, is a kind of merging of the two voices - that of the subject of the biography and that ofthe biographer himself.When a kind of seamless interaction between them occurs on the page the result can be beautifully illuminating. Scott Gray's The Mind of Bill James: How a Complete Outsider Changes Baseball accomplishes exactly this and does so by focusing on the essence of James' contribution to the game rather than devoting too much time to more personal details of his subjects' history.That said, the book is, in it's way, intensely personal - again, from the both the standpoint of the individual as well as the author, for both make a deeply felt, strong case for the beauty of real, meaningful information over appearances, not only in baseball, but in ostensibly disparate subjects such as politics and crime stories as well.Essentially Gray's book supports James' method and approach to deciphering the actual and real strengths of a baseball team and of individual players by citing him extensively. But what makes the book such a great read is that Gray provides an enlightening and, at times, poetic, context in which sabermetrics takes on the broader scope of things.His particular form of prose is not ethereal or flowery at all however, on the contrary, it is rather calculated, surefooted, and certain, and possesses edges as sharp as the James analyses cited throughout the book. This book represents what I consider a perfect fusion, a great meeting of the minds.I think the thought that most struck me from reading it is that I'm sure James would have been an incredibly interesting voice in any pursuit - and Gray's book conveys that in a comparably staightforward and precise way and with undeniable enthusiasm and depth.

A cherished read
By reading this book I began to admire Bobby Jones, not so much for his golf but for his character and his strength in making it to the end.It would have been a lot easier for him in a folklore sense if he had died young instead of being tortured with a crippling, painful disease that challenged him physically and was a test to him mentally and emotionally.I admire that he never hid himself away like so many famous people do that want to be remembered as they "were".I believe that this is the most admirable thing about him.That and his willingness to serve in WWII, landing on the same beach the day after D-Day.Not just a "for show" tour of duty.His devotion to his family, his country and his friends and his hometown are quite amazing.He is a role model in many ways that I don't even think of golf as one of them but for his tenaciousness, his intellect, his well roundedness and his extreme graciousness.He could have derailed many times but he never did in life.It's a loss that there isn't more to read about his life to know how he managed to adjust to everyday life and his illness, how he kept putting one foot in front of the other.The criticism seems unjust re: Chick Evans, Jones was very kind in all his correspondence to him which I have read in other books.Also, so much is made of his temper which he defends and explains in "Down the Fairway" by Jones, as not worse than any other player of the time and shortlived as a childish display that was never witnessed again at least publically for the rest of his life.Bobby Jones accomplished an amazing number of feats that most of us would feel proud to do even one of such as the many languages he spoke, the degrees, his many intellectual skills, a good family man and most of all his grace in a life.

Interesting insights on Jones
Most sports fans have heard that Jones won the Grand Slam, but few (including myself) realize the temper that Jones had or how the quest to win ate him up. Also the story of his later life was unknown to me as well.

Interesting, But Not Gripping
I must agree witht he reviewer who commented about the book being written by committee. The narrative is choppy and lacking not only key details, but also historical background. Because it's an autobiography, I don't necessarily think that it's fair to damn the book for being self-centered; it IS about him. I do feel, however, that the book needs better editing and a bit more self-examination.
Written by a Committee
It's an enjoyable, occasionally exciting, read, yet a flawed and problematic work. For one thing, Breashears, who never went beyond high school, and by his own admission isn't much of a writer, had the help of a stable of ghost writers and editors. The book has the feel of having been pasted together by a committee. The narrative often flows, but as often drops away or skips over important points. For example, Breashears mentions a falling out with his friend Geoff Lowe but never tells us why. He seems to accept some blame for his failed marriage - he admits he was seldom home - but gives only a very sketchy account that hints at issues without providing answers. His mountaineering exploits are impressive; sometimes there is ample detail, at other times the narrative just cuts off seemingly in the middle of a story.
A Quiet Intelligence
I was prepared for stories of physical prowess, for tales of overcoming the elements and vicious forces of nature, and even for another perspective on the now famous 1996 Everest disaster.What I didn't expect-but found as a wonderful thread throughout this multi-layered and surprising introspective and humble work-is the high level of thoughtfulness and intelligence that Breashears brings to his writing.He isn't afraid to place blame where it belongs, especially if that blame belongs on himself, as he demonstrates as he gradually reveals the deterioration of his marriage.Most men can't do that, especially those who lives routinely depend upon physical capability over emotional vulnerability.Despite his career triumphs and rise to the epitome of mountaineering accomplishments, Breashears presents a self-effacing and modest work which calls little attention to the incredible feats he accomplished...and therein lies the only fault I have with this book.In the natural reservation of his character and his modesty, he nearly glosses over the physical difficulties and demanding situations of mountaineering, making it seem as if anyone could do what he has done, if they only possess the same caution and determination.Not true.Not by a long shot.

Barry Sanders Highlight DVD...... FINALLY!!!But.......
I've been looking for a Barry Sanders highlights DVD for years.... good news - there finally is one, it comes with the book. Bad news? It's only about 20 minutes long, and doesn't show many of his spectacular runs. The book is outstanding, as it's written pretty much by Barry himself, and has great comments from other players in the NFL, giving him the praise he deserves. Michael Jordan, Wayne Gretzky, they have entire 60 minute DVD's (and more) on their lives.... if any player in the history of football should have one, it's Barry Sanders. All in all, if you like football at all, and appreciate magic, this is a must have, from the most talented running back in the history of the game.

Avid football fans who are also readers will be engrossed.
THE LAST COACH: A LIFE OF PAUL 'BEAR' BRYANT comes from a noted sportswriter who offers up a fine survey of the life of college football's finest coach, leader of numerous college teams who went on to victory. THE LAST COACH not only recreates Bryant's life, but offers up a history of his times and college football's winning moments - avid football fans who are also readers will be engrossed.
A Legend Remembered
I read this book from cover to cover very quickly. The book was both revealing to me about the more human side of Coach Bryant as well as a wonderful opportunity to walk down the memory lane of Alabama football in the 1970s. To me the book was more of a compilation of thoughts, notes, and interviews through the years, but in its own way provides a unique kind of insight to the John Wayne of college football coaches.
COMPREHENSIVE WORK
In researching my book about the 1970 USC-Alabama game, SEPTEMBER 1970, I interviewed Allen Barra. In that interview, in this fine book, THE LAST COACH, and in media interviews, he has demonstrated that he is not provincial. Rather, Barra knew as much about the USC angle as the Alabama angle. Obviously, THE LAST COACH goes well beyond the 1970 Trojan-Crimson Tide game and its segregation-ending implications, but Barra does not try to whitewash what it was or was not. The fact is, Bear Bryant and John McKay teamed up to do something great, and in losing that day, the "real winner was Alabama," as Jim Murray of the L.A. Times observed.

Two Lives Inextricably Entwined

Sound and Fury (14 hours, 11 cds, unabridged, Blackstone Audio) is a duel biography of Howard Cosell and Mohammed Ali.
The Odd Couple
David Kindred has written what amounts to a duel biography of the controversial odd couple that is Muhammad Ali and Howard Cosell.The author tells us that Ali elected to not join the military because the Muslim Nation told him not to.To cross them was to literary toy with his life.The assassination of Malcolm X being used as an example.While not necessarily agreeing with Ali's decision Cosell supported Ali stating that taking his heavyweight championship away from him without any semblance of due process was completely wrong.There appears to be evidence that Cosell may have already been experiencing dementia when he came out with his second book entitled I Never Played the Game.Aware of the criticism in his book of his cronies in the TV booth for Monday Night Football Cosell was asked before publication whether he wanted to include these strong opinions.Since he always prided himself on telling it "like it is" he felt it would be hypocrisy of him not to do so now.Cosell was a devoted family man while Ali ventured into nocturnal delights.It was hard for sports fans to be neutral in regard to either of these men, but boxing was the ingredient that brought these two men together first in mutural respect and then in friendship.Incidentally, page 247 has a hilarious anecdote of Howard using his colorful vocabulary in breaking up fisticuffs involving teens in Kansas City.Whether you are a fan of either man or the part they played in sports you will find this to be an extremely enjoyable book to read. ... One of a kind!
In a few words Jim Corbett can transport you back 60-100 years & make you feel like you are right there beside him tracking a Tiger in India. There is no bravado, he comes across as very humble. I had read his "Man-Eaters of Kumaon" several years ago & thought it was without a doubt one of the best books I had ever read. Even knowing how good his books were I was still highly impressed with this book as well. It isn't just the tigers he describes but the whole Indian country-side & the people & animals that habitat the place. He takes you there. Don't hesitate to read one of his books.
Words cant describe my respect for this man
Once again in this book Jim Corbett has proved it, he was a awesome incredible gentleman. I have never seen anyone who could write like him. Amazing man with amazing courage. His modesty is revealed throughout his book. He goes through so much suffering and pain, but never once writes about it. From his book you can feel how much concern he had for people. People trusted him with with their lives. His book teaches us a lot about jungles. I would recommend this to anyone who likes animals. Once again Jim Corbett you were and still are the best writes of adventures.

Good Read
The Basketball Diaries is sad because it's honest.It's gripping because it's real.I recommend this book that captures the life of talent gone to waste through the fall of addiction. Although it's not one of my all-time reads - you won't be dissapointed that you picked it up.

ok
at the end of the book i actually disliked Webb. it was a story about someonewho was not patient enough and thougt of himself as above everyone, i actually think him running such great times as a highschooler hurt him,he did not give the coach at michigan a fair chance and found ways to make everything a drama. the part i did enjoy though was reading about the other people from michigan and the fact that chris lear is such a great writer and really connects with the reader.

So Much Potential, So Little Patience
In a space of several months in 2001, Alan Webb ran the fastest indoor mile by a U.S. high school athlete and then set a national high school record for the magical distance, breaking a mark that reigned supreme for 36 years by the legendary Jim Ryun.
Reaching the PRO's
Alan Webb in this story strikes me as more a baby than a runner who has ran under 4 minutes in the mile. He whines about being hurt and not getting trained right. Warhurst is one of the greatest american distance coaches, if you can't run under him don't run at all. Nate seemed more likeable and more of a team player than Webb did in this book. Being for Illionis I love how Webb lost to Don Sage in 1500 meter final. Towards the end of the book, you knew he was going to quit michigan, now granted Webb has become very big in the sport but for a while he struggled after leaving Michigan and going back to his old coach. Wonderful!
If you like adventure literature, you should find this piece really wonderful. I read it while I was alone at home for a week and I started to "feel" leopards all aronud the house at night. Very well writen, hard to stop reading.

Reading his books is not just following a maneater with a gun but a journey into the days of theBritish Raj where you will be transported into the remote jungles of Northern India, read about the simple people and their unsophisticated lifestyle. There are no villians, no suspicious characters lurking around and nobody to provide humour. You just have some village folk trying to eke out a living which is sometimes interrupted by a feline with a taste for humans.
Corbett Classic
Another excellent book from the corbett library. Its true that fact can be stranger than fiction. And no where is it more evident than in the story of the maneater of rudraprayag. Read more
