5-0 out of 5 stars Queen Elizabeth I (Historic Lives)
Elizabeth I (The British Library, Historic Lives Series) by Susan Doran is a really superb book! Though I have read many books about Queen Elizabeth this one, though concise, thoroughly captures the essence of the history of Elizabeth and her England.Susan Doran provides us a captivating glimpse into the complicated world facing Elizabeth both in her personal and majestic life as she confronts the dynamic political and religious world developing around her and the England she loves.Elizabeth I was a complex person ruling in a complicated world. In a very even handed way, Susan Doran presents how a dynamic Queen Elizabeth, at her best and worst, navigates as best she can, through the perils and complexities confronting her and England.Susan Doran gives us an Elizabeth who is real. She shows Elizabeth as a Queen who has human frailities, who is adept in propaganda, can be as cruel as she is rewarding, yet whose monarchy enthralls and inspires us to this day. Susan Doran's adept use ofa superb collection of illustrations throughout the book really provides a wonderful dimension to her protrayal of Elizabeth as a dynamic queen of England. This is a book I recommend to anyone who has an interest in Elizabeth I, Queen of England.

5-0 out of 5 stars An Excellent Overview
This slim volume is only 144 pages including index. Susan Doran has written a complete, if brief, biography of Elizabeth I that hits all the main points of her life and rule. Nothing important seems to have been left out, and the narrative seems unhurried. One could read this book in a fairly short time, and have an understanding of Elizabeth's reign. However, for those who would like a bit more elaboration, Doran includes a Further Reading List at the end.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars The Reflections of A Smart Lady
The book may be a memoir of her life, but it really exemplifies the simple fact that Lynn Sherr is a smart lady. She's bright. She expresses so well not only the pain of loss, but also the joy of life. This is not only an excellent guide on how women can navigate the treacherous channels of a network news operation or business, but a guidepost for women and men on how to live.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Pleasant and Uplifting Surprise
I'm a fan of memoirs, but this one took me by surpriseIt is one of the best I have read recently, especially from a contemporary figure who is also a journalist. It is a coming-of-age story, of both an individual and an era.It is an insider's glimpse of some of the most important events of the last four decades, textured with details that place them in fresh context and present the human beings behind the sound bites. It is a love story; and it is a guidebook that will help steer many people through unexpected crises.I bought it to learn more about journalism and what seems to be the weakening of many of its standards. It didn't disappoint me in that regard, but it uplifted me through what I learned about life.

5-0 out of 5 stars Outside the Box: A Memoir
I loved this book! She brought me into the world of women in the media.I felt it was a true coming of age of a young woman coming to New York and making it despite the overwhelming odds against her. She crossed so many worlds and shared her experiences withthe reader. I think that this should be required reading for every young woman who comes to New York to make it in the Communications industry. ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars It's alright
The main thing to remember about this book is that it is a journal. So if you are looking for a beginning, middle and end you won't find it here.I kind of felt like "what is the point?" after I read it.It was also hard for me to understand how Anais Nin could write all these words of love about Henry Miller.I tried to read Miller's TROPIC OF CAPRICORN but I had to stop because he is such a misogynistic jerk. I couldn't believe the feelings of hate he had towards his poor first wife, and the way that he saw all women as trash.I had a hard time not thinking that Anais Nin was crazy to risk her marriage to a wonderful man for a horrible man like Miller. This is not a great book, but the one good thing about it is that it is very sensual and erotic.

5-0 out of 5 stars The sexual awakening of Anais Nin
Anais Nin is the author of over a dozen novels and a very famous diary that is now available in "expurgated" and "unexpurgated" form. All of her works concern one primary theme: women attempting to understand themselves and to make themselves complete human beings after having been psychologically and emotionally stunted in early life. An understanding of Anais Nin's life reveals why this theme preoccupied her: she had a very painful childhood. Her mother married a younger man of lower social pedigree, the parents were in constant conflict (" ... in the house there was always war: great explosions of anger, hatred, revolt. War." - WINTER OF ARTIFICE), her father frequently beat the children and allegedly molested Anais Nin, and her parents eventually separated. The mother took 11-year-old Anais and her two brothers, and the four moved from France to New York. It was on the ship that carried them to their new country that Anais began her diary.5-0 out of 5 stars And I'm not even done...
I was really excited about reading this book, hearing good things about it. I started to read it and couldn't put it down. I am not done with it yet, but I had to write a review before then. The desciptions Anais Nin puts into her journal are so heartfelt and real, you can't help but feel it's you. Her portrayals of the people she meets are so honest and so enlightening...the only thing I could complain about is her ranting about herself, but other than that it is a journey into a time where you wish you were around in. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars An interesting insight into the sport of ultra marathon running...
I enjoyed this book immensely. It offered a great insight into how ultra marathon runners can run to extremes and what truly drives them.It also makes you aware of the sacrifices athletes do make in order to be at the top of their game.Pam has a witty personality and you feel that you really get to know her from reading this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great book!
I read the reviews before buying and was a little reluctant; however, I decided a while ago I wanted to read it.I bought it anyway.Pam writes on a very personal level and tells of things many people would never have the courage to reveal to others.I thought this was a great book and am so glad I bought it.Be your own judge and don't let other people decide whether or not you will like something or someone. You might miss out on a lot of good things and people if you let someone else make the choice.I would recommend Dean K's book as well rather than compare this book to it.They both are great reads and very motivational!Any book that makes you want to get outside and take to the street, trail, etc. is a plus.

3-0 out of 5 stars pass on it
This is the first time I've felt compelled to leave a review.I'm planning to try my first ultra event next spring and myquest for inspiration, motivation and information hit the wall by chapter two in this book.I found her writing to be flat, with a selfish edge that was most unappealing.I found the added quotes from her boys and others to be a feeble attempt to add a rosy hue to a womans story that is less than inspiring. Finally, I'd like to say that while Pam's many accompishments are impressive, and I do appreciate her efforts to level the playing field among women and men, by making herself appear "ok" with anorexia and so much talk about herself as what appears to be less than nurturing mother she doesn't do the female athlete justice. ... 3-0 out of 5 stars "Perfect families, indeed".
This book is about "perfect families". Ms Heche, and the other Christian families referred to in the book, mostly come from "perfect families". Families in which personal needs and desires are basically subsummed to church teachings and expectations.Over and over, the women attested to the fact that "how can my husband/my son/my daughter be gay", when "I always thought we were a 'perfect family'".
5-0 out of 5 stars The Truth Comes Out
Written honestly, from the heart, not sparing the details of a heartbroken wife and mother. Appreciated it.

1-0 out of 5 stars A huge disappointment to genuine fashionistas
I couldn't disagree more heartily with those who recommended this book as a "beautiful coffee table book." At this price and with this subject matter this could have been a truly amazing look at the history of the House of Chanel and it's transition from the early years of Coco to the present leadershiop of Karl Lagerfeld. The text is mediocre and the photos are terrible. The general visual quality of the book is absolutely reprehensible. The dresses are all reproduced in a poor quality "Liz Taylor in the White Diamonds commercial" fake fuzzy lens. There is not one really great photo of an actual garment in this entire book. As someone who saw the actual exhibit the book is based on, I feel the Metropolitan really missed on this one. The exhibit itself was magnificent, this poorly concieved book is a complete dud. Save your money for one of the many other books detailing the life and work of Coco Chanel.

5-0 out of 5 stars FABULOUS BOOK
Well worth your money.Beautifully done. Not only is it a lovely coffee table book, it is a book you will look at many times.

5-0 out of 5 stars Something to pass on!
I just Read Spragins amazing collection of letters and had to post this message about it.If you're looking for a meaningfull thought provoking gift this is it!This book will be cherished not just because it reveals the inner thoughts of some amazing people on our planet, but because it confirmations the inner voice in all of us that is often ignored.
5-0 out of 5 stars A Lesson in Reflection
I found this book as I was looking for a gift for my daughter's college graduation. The concept seemed incredible to me so I grabbed it up and brought it home. Reading the letters inpired me to write my own letter. I wrote a letter to myself 23 years before, pregnant with my daughter. The process of reflection was intense for me. I cried as I remembered the fears I had--the uncertainty. My sister called as I was writing this letter and the two of us went even farther back than 23 years. We remembered each other as children--when we were unable to communicate our fears. Our conversation helped our relationship and helped me to finish my letter to myself. In the end, my letter to me became my gift to my daughter. Without this book, all this reflection would be lost.

5-0 out of 5 stars Author of "Live in the Moment" wishes every HS Grad would receive this book!
I read about this book in the newspaper and ordered it right away, even though I already get it when it comes to "wishing we knew then what we know now".I wrote my book for the same reason - if only I'd had a book like "Live in the Moment" or "What I Know Now" to read as I entered into the adult world.Learning things that other people wish they'd known at a younger age only helps to reaffirm my belief that it's up to us to help open the eyes of the next generation. They've got the world by the tail, if only they would realize that and make the most of it!Brava Ellyn Spragins. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars A Millions Little Pieces, Jr.
I am currently in Kabul, and have read almost every English-language book on Afghanistan that is popularly available. I have also lived in Kabul and traveled to Feyzbad, Kandahar,Mazar-e-Sharif, Jalalabad, Kunduz and along the Uzbek Border. I speak mediocre Dari. Among the books that I enjoyed were those by Saira Shah's grandmother (try "My Khyber Life") and her father, Idris Shah. The same cannot be said for Saira Shah's. Shah' work, however. Part of my complaint was that the book isn't about anything much - its just a list of what she claims were her experiences in and near Afghanistan.I would compare them to a series of interesting letters detailing what I did on my afghan vacation. What they don't provide is insight into what was happening in Afghanistan or Peshawar, why, or what is going on now, or much cultural or historical information.
5-0 out of 5 stars Myth, identity, realities . . .
Part memoir, part reportage, this beautifully written book is also an inquiry into the nature of myth, identity, and the limits of human endurance. Born in England and raised on the memories of her Afghan father's homeland, the author journeys as a young journalist to Afghanistan during the Soviet Occupation in the 1980s, traveling with the mujahidin rebels, who with massive infusions of weapons from the CIA eventually drive out the Russians and then quickly succumb again to an equally destructive civil war and the inevitable tyranny of the Taliban. A witness to these struggles and the widespread human misery they caused, Shah is present again in 2002 as the Americans retaliate in response to the 9/11 attacks.
5-0 out of 5 stars Absolutely amazing!
This book is one of the best books I have read.It was touching and made me realise what an amazing life Saira Shah has led. After I closed the book, I could not pick up annother book for a couple of days - I did not want to spoil the feeling it had left me with. This book will move you, make you think and touch you.

4-0 out of 5 stars The intellectual overview of a political science genius
It has been a long time since I went to a baseball game, but trying to keep track of the intellectual action in the biography of Hannah Arendt by Julia Kristeva reminded me of the game.Eventually, I even thought of a song, "Catfish" by Bob Dylan (Words by Bob Dylan and Jacques Levy) recorded on July 28, 1975, an outtake from the album "Desire" that was finally released in a three-CD package called "The Bootleg Series Volumes 1-3 [rare and unreleased] 1961-1991."There was once a pitcher called Catfish Hunter, million dollar man, and Dylan's chorus said, "Nobody can throw the ball Like Catfish can."I have had the words since "The Songs of Bob Dylan" was released in 1976, but I didn't hear the song until 1991.Having an English translation from 2001 of a feminist biography of a political scientist of the mid-twentieth century captures the intellection activity that interests me about as well as "Catfish" captures the action of a baseball game.Read more

There is a clarity, elegance, and beauty to Conway's Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars no title
I related to and thoroughly enjoyed this book. Conway's descriptions of Australia are beautiful. She has written a follow-up book which I would like to read also. And on second reading, I feel more and more that perhaps her mother had some chemical imbalance, because she changed so drastically.Either that, or her repressed emotions after the deaths of her husband and her oldest son in the space of five years, led her to the bitter old woman she became.

4-0 out of 5 stars An Excellent Choice - The Road from Coorain
I'd recommend the The Road from Coorain anytime.I thought Jill Ker Conway's description of Australia was wonderfully descriptive. I felt I was there as she described her life in the bush as well as the city. Her ability to convey her feelings and her understanding of her situation growing up in a less than idealic life came through the pages as each situation developed. The book left me admiring her strength of character and understanding.
5-0 out of 5 stars I loved this one and loved Sujoya Roy's novel too
If you enjoyed this book, try For Ganesh: Remover of Obstacles, by Sujoya Roy. It has a wealth of useful information in the back and is designed to get a group to discuss and confirm that God's word is applicable in the lives of women today. We have seen remarkable growth in our class by both numbers and spiritually.

4-0 out of 5 stars Women of the Bible
After personally using the companion devotional book last year, I recommended that our ladies' Sunday School class try this workbook in between other studies.Since each week focuses on a different woman, we can easily continue later with the following chapter. So far, the response has been excellent. The questions provoke personal comments from the whole group, although occassionally I find the queries to be oversimplified.Theaccompanying history and scriptures show that much study went into this book.
5-0 out of 5 stars Amazing Results
This product was ordered for our Women's Fellowship, and the results have been way above expectations. The women's group has open up and started sharing and caring with more vitality than ever before. I can't say the book has done anything, but it sure was used by the Spirit of Jesus to cause them to open up to each other.

5-0 out of 5 stars Short but beautiful book . . .
Gift of the Red Bird, a Spiritual Encounter, reads like a journal from Paula D'Arcy's life. On August 18, 1975, on a return trip home to Connecticut, Paula's car was struck by a drunk motorist. Her daughter, Sarah, died of head injuries on August 20, and her husband died three days later from a ruptured spleen. Paula was alive and three months pregnant with her second baby daughter, Beth. For this reason, she went on living.

4-0 out of 5 stars Dignity Restored
This is an illustrated account of the tragic life of Audrey Munson (1891-1996) who modeled for leading American sculptors (e.g., Daniel Chester French, A. Sterling Calder, and Sherry Fry) in the so-called"guilded age" of art. She posed for both the head and tail of the 1916 U.S.dime (the Mercury dime); as well as for statues that stand at the front ofthe New York Public Library and the Brooklyn Museum of Art, on the fountainoutside of the Plaza Hotel, in the pediments at the entrance to the FrickCollection, and (as the figure of Evangeline) at the Longfellow Memorial inMassachusetts. When the Beaux Arts tradition in sculpture was quashedby the rise of Modernism, she tried to survive by performing in films aboutartists' models, resulting in a great scandal because she appeared on thescreen totally nude. In 1919, when rumored to have been involved in themurder of her landlord's wife (she wasn't), she collapsed emotionally(described back then as "mental blight"), was ostracized as "Crazy Audrey,"and, after a quest for a husband that failed, attempted suicide.Atage 39, she was committed to an asylum, where she remained in obscurityuntil her recent death at age 105. This book is a belated but sincereattempt to restore her dignity. (Copyright by Roy R. Behrens, fromBallast Quarterly Review, Vol 15 No 2, Winter 1999-2000.) ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Good Read
This book was not better then the first book in the series but definately beter then the 2nd one. I found the story boring at time as some issues that were already discussed in the fist book where discussed again in the 3rd book. Other then that it was a good continuation.

5-0 out of 5 stars For Goodpasture
Goodpasture, I simply had to share with you that I happen to know that the princess supports over 700 needy families, from feeding them to educating their children to tending to their health care.In fact, in the book, if you finished reading it, tells how her son bought a business in Pakistan and set the young woman up as the owner, where she is prospering.Although she did stay in the princess' sister's home for a while, it was explained in the book that they were afraid to send her home, that her parents might resell her.Everything takes time.I know two princesses extremely well, one from Saudi Arabia and one from Kuwait, and both are extremely generous and help people all over the world.I'm sorry you had such a negative opinion of the princess, but like I said, I'm confused that you didn't read on to see that indeed she did change the young woman's life in a very wonderful manner.Just because the princess is extremely wealthy and does enjoy her personal wealth, she gives away a mind-boggling amount of money, and for good causes.I just thought you would like to know, as well as others, so you would not feel so disappointed and angry at the princess over an impression that is not reality. Also, many things are not told in the books as some things would give her identity away on the spot.

1-0 out of 5 stars Circle needs to extend radius beyond Princess's delusional microcosm

Editorial Review

In the decades that have followed Sylvia Plath's suicide in February1963, much has been written and speculated about her life, most particularly about her marriage to fellow poet Ted Hughes and her last months spent writing the stark, confessional poems that were to become Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars An idiosyncratic pure beat and melodic force
Whether you read The Journals of Sylvia Plath as a writer's notebook, as scenes from a marriage, as social history, or as daily bulletins from one of the most star-crossed love stories of all time, the journal's words help to keep alive the writer who has been called "the literary girl's Elvis" while also bringing us news of how she thought, how she taught, what she read, how she wrote, along with the most primal news of her legendary marriage, a marriage that so often seemed golden, closer than close, but whose ardent claustrophobia was more precious to Sylvia than it was to Ted, and whose tragic aftermath also turned out to be notorious, horrible, with Assia Wevill (the woman Hughes left Plath for) killing herself in a copycat suicide, and also killing their little daughter, and with even Hughes's final wife (the non-writer and therefore the one who was supposed to be stable) threatening to kill herself when she discovered, not long before Ted's death, that he not only had a mistress, he had also over the years been the lover of a fair (no, make that unfair) number of others.
4-0 out of 5 stars Great Book , but Wish Ted Hughes had not destroyed parts....
I love this book and read it again and again. It gives deep and detailed descriptions of life in 1950s England and to a lesser extent the U.S.
5-0 out of 5 stars Mesmerizing Read
This book offers an interesting glimpse into one of the more mysterious minds of our time.So much has been said about Sylvia Plath over the last forty or fifty years, and this collection of her journal and diary entries makes for a fascinating, and honest, look at the person behind the name. ... A fantastic book showing God's faithfulness to us.Very, very interesting and I think everyone should read.It is also a must for any church library.

5-0 out of 5 stars Faith Tested to the Utmost Survives
Darlene's story could be included in the New Testament book of Hebrews, where the heroes of faith and their deeds are listed. It impacted me as much as reading "The Hiding Place" and "God's Smuggler". What kept her sane in captivity and isolation was the Scripture and hymns which articulated her faith. God showed her that He was there.

4-0 out of 5 stars Brought tears to my eyes
Darlene suffered terribly in the prisoner of war camp, but her faith remained strong throughout. God answered her prayers in wonderful ways. Fed only rice or gruel while in solitary confinement, one day she prayed for a banana, a single banana. She considered all the ways God could answer her prayer and deliver that banana. Through the guard? No... The night watchman? No... As she began to doubt that God could grant her that request, she was delivered an armload of bananas - 92 of them! - from the most unlikely source.
