5-0 out of 5 stars Healing for Parents dealing with loss
Until I real Dale Evans' account of her daughter's life, I didn't realize anyone felt the way I do.We lost our 2 1/2 year old daughter this year. She had "special needs," some similar to those of Robin in the book.We always felt that God gave us our daughter and she was our own angel here on earth. This book is a wonderful story of the love between a family, their God, and their special angel.I highly recommend it to any parent or family who have lost a child with a disability.

5-0 out of 5 stars I Want To Read It Again
I read this book when I was in 4th or 5th grade. The story of Robin Rogers has stuck with me for 35 years. While I have forgotten the details, I remember the essential message. All children are gifts from God, especially the ones that aren't everyone's idea of perfect.

5-0 out of 5 stars love and loss and a tissue box
This little book is a heartwarming love story and a heart wrenching tear jerker all rolled into one. Dale Evans Rogers shares the tale of little Robin, her Down Syndrome daughter who died at a very young age.The story is told from Robin's point of view, as if she is sitting on her heavenly father's knee relating what happened "down there." The heartache of a mother's loss, and the hope of a child's eternity are entwined in an unforgettable tale. I highly recommend this book to any one who has lost a young child, or has had to deal with special needs like Down Syndrome. Be sure to have a tissue box handy. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Because Of "The Banyan Tree"
I found my way to this book after I had read "The Banyan Tree" by Christopher Nolan. This was a book that I read and reviewed back in February, and ever since I have been mystified why the book never seemed togain the wide acceptance of readers. All of the reviews that have beenposted by readers for "The Banyan Tree" have been 5 star reviews, and the same is the case for "Under The Eye Of The Clock".5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderfully uplifting !
Christopher Nolan's "Under The Eye Of The Clock" is an autobiographical account of his incredibly awe-inspiring and miraculous life. Born a cripple, he could have been consigned to the rubbish heap butinstead and against all odds became a celebrated writer of this WhitbreadBook winner, "The Banyan Tree" as well as an early book of poems.Without taking anything away from Joseph Meehan (a self portrait of Nolan),he couldn't have overcome his debilitating handicaps to scale the heightshe did without the steady support and tender loving care of his family. Afather, mother and sister who are such warm and emotionally intelligenthuman beings anybody would be blessed and proud to have them as family. Theschool principals, teachers and fellow students who accepted him, nurturedhim and gave him the chance to prove himself equal to the best amongphysically whole human specimens are themselves shining examples ofhumanity who deserve as much recognition in Nolan's lifestory. Although ithas been compared with James Joyce's "Portrait of an Artist as a YoungMan", it is in reality nothing like it. Whereas Joyce's work is forthe most part depressing and full of pain and harshness, Nolan's story isso morally uplifting you almost forget its grave subject matter. Nolan'sdazzling and inventive writing style is also unique and something torelish. He coins and mints new words which have a yet found a conventionalmeaning but are so emotionally accurate you know they're right. Read thisif you're feeling down and need something to restore your faith in mankind!

5-0 out of 5 stars An enchanting autobiography
Under the Eye of the Clock is the autobiography of Christopher Nolan, the talented young poet with cerebral palsy. He can't walk or talk or write in the usual manner.Since Nolan lacks the use of his hands, this book likeDam-Burst of Dreams, the book of poems that preceded it, was written bymeans of a typing stick affixed to his head. The book succeeds both aspure artistry and as a window into the world of the disabled.Nolan hasre-named himself Joseph Meehan and told his story entirely in theobjectivity of the third person. This brilliant stroke allows him to avoidexcessive self-pity while making his sufferings and triumphs real and deep.Nolan's use of language had earned him comparisons with James Joyce, Yeats, and Dylan Thomas.Nolan stretches the meanings and implications of words, rearranges their spelling, and even invents new ones to communicate hismoods and perceptions and illuminate life, his own and those he observes, with his unique poet's sensibility. ... 3-0 out of 5 stars A Very difficult case
I hate trying to assign stars to a book like this. It's a very controversial topic, and one that I have strong opinions on.Still, I don't assume that everyone who disagrees with me is wrong, wrong, wrong.I have too much sympathy for all the combatants.I wish there had been a way to work it out peaceably.
1-0 out of 5 stars Don't bother with this one........it's a real bore
If people want to read a book that is more objective about this case please read, "Unplugged, Reclaiming Our Right to Die in America" by William Colby.Mr. Colby is the lawyer for Nancy Cruzan, a case very similar to Terri Schiavo's, so he is very knowledgable about this topic. He does not denigrate either family and approaches the subject of dying very even-handedly.Reading either the book byMichael Schiavo or the book by the Schindlers is an exercise in futility to me.Both sides have their own opinion of what happened and are obviously very biased to their own point of view. This is a very dysfunctional family that will never agree with anything the other says simply because they do not like each other, and readers should understand this when they read their books. In between all this name-calling and accusations lies the real truth, as it usually does, and no one, especially the public, knows that real truth.
5-0 out of 5 stars A Captivating Testimony of Love and Compassion
In today's world, the culture of death is continuously growing stronger in its influence on the media and the way we think. They try to convince everyone that the disabled should be killed--that they are "better off dead," "vegetables," and "not worthy of life."When we think of such arguments, the most recent case that comes to mind is the case of Terri Schindler-Schiavo, a disabled woman that, due to an activist judge and her adulterous husband, was cruelly dehydrated to death for two weeks, and was denied the right that should have been undeniable to her: the right to life. The culture of death ever since has labelled Terri's death as "a blessing" and "heroism."Even when Terri's autopsy showed that her collapse was not caused by a heart attack or bulimia, the culture of death has automatically concluded that "Saint Michael Schiavo is always right," and that Terri had been "PVS and dead for fifteen years" and a "burden on society." (Despite the fact that a persistent vegetative state cannot be diagnosed by an autopsy, and the immense brain damage seen during the autopsy could have easily been caused by Terri's extended dehydration period.) The Schindlers, Terri's family, were labelled as "freaks" and "evil bigots."

Editorial Review

The psychology underlying eating disorders is fraught with contradictions and uncertainties; researchers are just beginning to formulate the exact biochemical and emotional combination that impels a woman to binge and purge, or starve herself, or chronically overeat. But the familial forces behind such self-destructive behavior are what Margaret Bullitt-Jonas focuses on in her ultimately graceful memoir, Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars An Amazing Book
Margaret Bullitt-Jonas has written a compelling account of her addiction to binge eating and the arduous process of recovery through a 12 steps program. She describes with great insight the poison of family secrets, based on her years growing up in a cold household where feelings were buried and everyone ignored her father's destructive alcoholism. During her own recovery, Bullitt-Jonas connects with a deep Christian faith, which is the subject of another book one hopes she will write one day. Bullitt-Jonas provides powerful descriptions and insight into the nature of addiction. This is a beautiful book, well written and filled with memorable stories about family secrets, a daughter's complex relationship with her mom and dad, and her deep need for connection and acceptance.
5-0 out of 5 stars Bravely and beautifully told.
It angers me that a couple of smug and snippy reviewers may have prevented this beautiful story from getting to all the people it could help.In my own twelve-step struggle, Margaret Bullitt-Jonas has become a strong companion on the uphill climb.

5-0 out of 5 stars Inspiring & Profoundly Spiritual Book on Overeating
I could not put this book down.As a person who struggles with compulsive overeating and I have joined Overeater's Anonymous and found the program most effective. The author of this book has also benefitted from the life-saving work of OA and the help of God.A truly beautiful book, it should be read by all women! But especially those struggling with any eating disorder. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars A candid, heartfelt family story
What an excellent book!Susan Senator gives us an authentic, honest view of her family as they learn to cope with - and love - their autistic son and brother, Nat.
3-0 out of 5 stars A journey for some whose children have autism, not all
What we call "autism" is obviously caused by many different things. While this author's child didn't respond to biochem therapies, my son did. Our stories, and everyone else's, are true and valid and deserve to be heard. We need to respect other parents and believe what they experience. My son pointed for the first time at the age of 4, within hours of taking DMG (and there are research explaining why). He stopped echolalia after Auditory Integration Training. I have a friend whose son at age 7 started singing after a dose of Lauricidin. My son stopped hitting his head against the floor when we treated him for Clostridium Difficle. He stopped running around like a maniac after being put on the Gfcf diet. So we have to keep an open mind and respect the experiences of parents whose children do respond, and parents whose children don't. If my son's problems were only "quirkiness" I would never have tried biomedical approaches. But his problems are physical and he has physical symptoms. He has been recovering, and the child who was rejected by preschools at age 3 is now welcomed in mainstream kindergarten. My heart goes out to those whose children DO not recover in this way, and I honor them for realizing the gifts we get from these beautiful children, as this author has.

THIS BOOK WILL TOUCH YOUR HEART AND SOUL AND HELP YOU BETTER UNDERSTAND WHAT A MAGNIFICENT CREATOR WE HAVE. HERE IS RECOUNTED THE AMAZING LOVE SHARED BETWEEN A SAVANT SON AND A TOTALLY DEDICATED FATHER WHO ARE SHARING A BRAVE NEW WORLD TOGETHER. I LOVE THE BOOK AND THE SUBJECTS!!

5-0 out of 5 stars Simply Unbelievable
Kim Peek was, of course, the real life inspiration for the character Dustin Hoffman played in the 1988 movie Rainman, but in reality, I found Kim's abilities to exceed those of the Hollywood construct he inspired. This man is truly extraordinary. Not only is he the closest thing to a human encyclopedia that we know of, but going beyond his feats of memory, Kim's story is one of triumph, survival, and inspiration. Diagnosed as mentally retarded, given slim odds of ever reaching adulthood, Kim Peek not only beat the limitations of his condition, but met the challenges asked of him and grew in time to be someone who found pleasure in demonstrating his awesome talents in front of audiences and scientific panels. This book amazed me, made me happy, and left me humbled and awe-struck. It's a story everyone should be able to appreciate.

5-0 out of 5 stars Worth any price!

5-0 out of 5 stars Education and Hope
I have helped train family practice physicians and I have used the play "W;T" to try and sensitize young physicians to the viewpoint of the patient.I was asked to read this book for a graduate course in spirituality and healing called: Suffering and Hope.I found it even better than "W;T" for training purposes.I think it should be required reading for all medical students and residents.Physicians are much more than just technicians trained to "fix" bodies. The viewpoint of the author was most helpful in suggesting ways to approach a very difficult situation.I have ordered copies for friends who are suffering from cancer that it may help them on their journey!

5-0 out of 5 stars Awesome
This was one of the best books I have read in the course of my dissertation work.I'd say it is a must read for anyone in the health care profession, as well as patients battling chronic symptoms. The book is areminder that we need to remember the PERSON who is the patient.

5-0 out of 5 stars He gave me the courage to risk hangin in there for others..
Arthur Frank doesn't deny any aspect of his experience, and through his demonstration of bare-bones honesty and self acceptance, I connected with myself, which is where the answers, if there are any, are to be found. I saw my own fear of cancer patients played out on these pages, and I recalled with anguish the number of times I disappeared from the lives of people I cared about because I was so afraid of their disease, their pain and the possibility that they'd die. ...and I also saw the ways in which I've protected myself from my own fear of cancer by wondering what it was in their psyches that caused them to be stricken by this terrible disease. ... and I saw how frightened I've been to be present in my own body. His honesty gave me the courage to change, and I'm incredibly grateful. Editorial Review

Nancy Mairs, a gifted essayist who is fierce and funny by turns, landed in a wheelchair years ago due to degenerative multiple sclerosis that has sapped much of her strength. She bends an agile mind and sharp tongue around the daily tasks of seeing eye-to-navel with a world that clearly prefers nondisabled "normals." One candid, pained essay tells of longing to give care, not just accept it. Others describe the shifting line in the sands marking limits she could live with; teeth-grinding frustration at foolish building practices that keep even public bathrooms out of her reach; and a discomforting adventure as an undercover agent exposing a drug fraud aimed at people with diseases like MS. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Touching, moving and very sad
I had to read this book for one of my women's study's classes nearly 7 years ago. It has been too long to remember much of the detail but what I do remember is the depth of the impression that was left upon me. It is a very difficult task to look at someone's life, through their eyes, and experience their total destruction of being...slow....poignant...and startlingly real.

3-0 out of 5 stars Worthy reading
Nice story of the experience of premature birth and motherhood. My heart goes out to anyone who has had to face such trying circumstances, and I'm very glad the story has a happy ending.
5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful story which touches on all the feelings of a preemie mom
I gave birth to twins at 32 weeks in NYC this year and they spent 6 weeks in the NICU.About a week before they came home, I was sitting on my bed, crying and feeling sorry for myself because I couldn't have them home with me, when I saw Jenny on TV discussing her new book.I immediately picked it up from the library and read it in 2 days.It was so similiar to my own experience and I thought she did a wonderful job of sharing all aspects of life during this time. The major difference being my twins were spontaneous (not from fertility treatments). There were many similiarites in the small details like her husband looking for a job when they were born (mine was too) and her father in law's struggle with cancer (my mother in law was in the midst of her cancer battle at the time as well). Also her feelings about moving out of NYC to a house in the suburbs closer to her husband's new job(we did this about a month after they came home, too)This side information may have seemed irrelevant to some, but when you are so intent on focusing on your babies survival from a premature birth, the other things going on in your life can add such an extra stress that you don't know how you can handle it all.So thank you Jenny for putting together such a wonderful story.I'm so glad you did it because I am such a poor writer. If anyone ever wants to hear how I felt through my experience I can point them to your book and tell them to read it because it says all that I would have wanted to say in an effortless, easy to read format.

4-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful honesty, ironically could use editing!
I came very close to giving this book 5 stars, as I so much appreciated and related to much written in it.I too was a mother of a preemie, and I have had so many of the worries with each of my three children that Jenny had with hers.I loved hearing about her struggle to decide whether to go back to work or not.So many times, mothers make this out to be such a cut-and-dried decision---they are sure they want to, or they would never consider it.I think the process for many women is much like it was for me or for the author here---a hard decision to make, despite loving both the kids and the job so much!I was touched by hearing about how Jenny felt sad whenever she started pumping milk---my 3rd child would never nurse, and I had a horrible wave of sadness every time that machine turned on!

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Book
I just finished reading this book and found I could not put it down.It is one of the most enlightening, well written, importantbooks on living with a disability that I've ever read. The author's descriptions are so precise I really feel as if I'm there or following behind her. I can almost smell the food as she describes it or see the cobblestones on the uneven surface as she tries to manuver. 5-0 out of 5 stars True to Life
I read this book in one sitting and I really enjoyed it.I was impressed with the author's honesty and really appreciated her candor in reactions to each new development in her disease.5-0 out of 5 stars Live life to its fullest

4-0 out of 5 stars Another survival story
If you are looking for another most inspirational story about a cancer survivor, read Tapestry: The Journey of Laurel Lee. CBS turned her hospital journal into a movie several years ago. Tapestry is her entire life story - it is filled with laughter, tears, hope and grace.

5-0 out of 5 stars Telling It Like It Is.
I am a cancer survivor and a personal coach for cancer survivors (rle444@yahoo.com).I have recommended this book to all of my clients. The stories tell it like it is: the good, bad and ugly. It's so important for current cancer patients to see the possibilites through the angst of having cancer and cancer survivors to have examples of the various tribulations and exhilaration of "cancer after life."cancer (little "c") is what you have, not who you are.I thank the authors for this beautiful and powerful evidence of the human spirit.

4-0 out of 5 stars A wonderful restoration of a remarkable story
This is a beautiful 100th year anniversary edition of Helen Keller's The Story of My Life, originally published in 1903.In his introduction, editor James Berger stresses the importance of offering Helen Keller's text in its original form, but he has greatly enhanced the original story by including additional background information, a section of Keller's own letters from the age of eight, and finally, commentaries on Keller's personality, education, speech, and style written by Annie Sullivan and others.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Inspiring story of hope and the strength of human spirit
Brooke Ellison's magnificent achievements, both because and in spite of her disability, can't help but inspire the reader. Her biography is both a tribute to her and to her loving family, especially her mother. I didn't find the story lacking because it didn't discuss her daily life and limitations in depth; I think perhaps she wanted to maintain SOME privacy in a life that of necessity has sacrificed so much of it, and the whole point of her story is that Brooke is not defined by her disability. I think the true tragedy of her accident was not that she was so severely changed, but that we were all so nearly robbed of a remarkable and gifted human being. I wish Brooke and her family well, and hope to see her on the speaking tour. Five stars for an inspiring story.

5-0 out of 5 stars Inspiring An Unbelievable Mom
Brook Ellison really could be an inspiration to us all.Her positive outlook and her "go get em" attitude really is inspiring. That said, her mother Jean is a phenonmenal women. I cannot imagine getting up everyday,7 days a week,24 hours a day at 4;00 am to bath, dress, feed, and groom another human being. Would I do it for my daughters? Of course, but it is easy to say that when you are not in the same situation. Let's face it,we have all griped about having to drop them at friends homes, going to pick them up at school when they are sick etc....This woman is one to definitly be admired. The other day I was on a message board reading all these nitwits gush on about a certain mobsters daughter and how much they admire her...WHY???I posted about this book and this extrodainary woman, truly God blessed Brook with having Jean as a mom. I also think she was blessed by all the sacrifices her brother, sister and father made as well to make her dream come true. Brook's sister stated in an interview that the movie does not have their Grandmother in it and they should have, as she was the one who cared for the rest of the family when Brook and her mom were away. Jean is truly a modern day hero. God Bless the whole Ellison family.

4-0 out of 5 stars The Brooke Ellison Story - a wonderful book!!
This biography/autobiography was amazing. It pulls you in right from the beginning and keeps you there. It is a sad book, but it has happy times and it can make you laugh and cry. The Brooke Ellison Story was very well written. Each chapter switches back and forth from the daughters' perspective, to the mothers' perspective. It was absolutely wonderful.

This book is the basis for the fantastic movie 'Brian's Song', about Brian Piccolo and his battle with cancer and his friendship with Gale Sayers.Jeannie Morris was the wife of Johnny Morris, a teammate of Brian Piccolo's.She does a splendid job of balancing the football aspect, with the friendship part, with the cancer battle.
4-0 out of 5 stars A look into the mind of Brian Piccolo
This book enables the reader to empathize for Brian. He was a pro football player who battled with cancer at a time when there wasn't a lot known about cancer.Even if you don't like football you can appreciate the book for what it is.It is good for lots of ages as well. The book is good about explaining what was known about cancer at the time.It includes medical analysis of his hospital visits as well as interactions with his family and teammates.

What a wonderful book.I have noticed that many who review this book are intimately involved in Alzheimers, be they professional or private care-givers.I don't have anyone in my immediate family with Alzheimers, but I read this as a potential gift to a friend who does.I am grateful that I was motivated to read this lovely, loving account of a disease and the way if effects those who are near it.The author and her family serve as reminders that love comes in all forms, and may be asked of you at the most inconvient moments.Don't wait until you have Alzheimers in your family to read this book.So much gentle learning to be done, so much joy to be given, so many miles we go, travellers through life.

I cross-referenced it with the opinions of other readers from Amazon.com and decided it'd be an interesting overview of this incredible disease - schizophrenia.
