The Confession
I know that a lot of people in the gay community do not think that James McGreevey should be classified as a hero.But as a gay man who struggled with trying to be the "Best Little Boy in Town", I can emphasize with him.Trying to live in a straight world all the while knowing that you are different takes a tremendous toll on your personality and your self worth.

All of New Jersey and the country were probably anticipating the release of former Governor Jim Mcgreevey's book. Some of the hype may have been due to the scandal involving his sexual encounters. I am completing the book and am very impressed with the wealth of information included.
The people have lost a great man
Isn't it sad that we dispose of gay people like they were garbage once it is found out that someone is gay?Governor McGreevey was an excellent politician, with a keen intellect.Who knows what good he could have done for the people of this country had he stayed in politics?Instead, we force people like this to resign.This is a great loss to society.Many gay and lesbian people have great gifts to offer and yet...we throw them out with the bath water.It is our loss, not their's. ... A Million Little Pieces - James Frey
This is a book written from the heart; filled with deep soul searching and honesty. I'm familiar with alcohol and drug addiction. I'm familiar with treatment centers. For those of you who know this road - this book touches home. For those of you who don't - don't be the first to throw that proverbial 'stone'. I've heard the reports of the 'untruths' regarding this publication. I read it anyway. Pain is an immense ocean. The depth of that ocean is different for each of us. This 'message' could be a gift for many; a starting point, a different way of looking at life and it's unkind lessons. This book offers an open hand to start you on a journey towards reality; toward clarity. For those of you who belittled this book - be it truth or sensationalism - be cautious! You never know what life holds for you or yours around the next bend. The information offered here, the idea of taking that 'first step towards recovery', the process of becoming HONEST with yourself and others, could well be the salvation for someone you love. Yep, it's got some rough language. Did you really expect anything else from a drug addict? Common! Gimme' a break! Get real with yourself! Keep an open mind and dig into this book! It's a good read!
Frey touched my heart
I have always wondered what happens in a Treatment center. How do people stop being an addict? What do they do all day? What kind of people are in a treatment center? This book answers those questions and shows that there's hope for every addict. I think it's an excellent read. A gift to all addicts.It's exiting, I couldn't put it down and I thought about it quit a lot.

As authentic as a daytime soap opera
I'd heard the buzz (both pro and con) and thought I'd take an independent read. I was dismayed with this book.

A poignant and insightful story
What does it take to overcome great obstacles and find the best in oneself? The author found a young man named Cedric Jennings to explore this question. The author observes Cedric's life in a uniquely honest way. We are able to experience first-hand the often painful and complicated emotions of young people who grow up in socially disadvantaged neighborhoods and broken homes. The day to day experiences of these young people often necessitate the need to focus on emotional and financial survival, rather than intellectual pursuits or personal aspirations.
A tale of a boy who made it out...
This book would typically not be on my list of interesting reading; but the book was for college so I thought I would read it.To my great suprise, the book actually made emotions run through my body when I read it.It wasn't that these experiences were personal for me; but I recognized the struggle I had seen so often and how I seemed to be a part of the "majority" who didn't know any better.This seemed to bother me the most, I kept asking myself, "Am I really that ignorant?".The answer unfortunetly was yes, I really had become just another example of something the minority had to struggle so hard against to succeed.The idea that my suburban schools were far ahead of all the inner city schools seemed almost ludicrous.The more I looked into it, the more I realized that this struggle has been going on longer than I have lived, and that even though I feel bad for the minority; I still continue to live my life casually without sticking my neck out for others.

The best book for recovering bulimics I have ever read
This is the best book that I have read thus far in my recovery. Jenni touches on all of the emotions, insanity, and obsession of the disease with humor and strength. She provides hope for all of us trying to recover. It is a great book .

Life Without Ed is one of the only books I have read on eating disorders that is NOT triggering (Jenni does not give any tips or tricks).I find hope and inspiration every time I read it. I actually carry it with me daily just in case I need to refer back to it.

Everyone should read this book
Whether or not you have personally experienced mental illness in your family or have experience in the criminial justice system, this book will open your eyes. I want to thank the author for bringing this difficult and stigmatized subject the the attention of the average citizen. A very important book that will hopefully bring about change in both the mental health system and the criminal justice system.

In depth and accurate
I found myself fascinated from the point of view of nurse, police dispatcher, and victim of a brutal assault by a man who had gone off his meds.I like the way he writes and plan to read more of his books.

The Education of Little Tree By: Forrest Carter
This book is about a boy orphaned very young who is adopted by his Cherokee Grandmother and half Cherokee Grandfather in the Appalachian Mountains of Tennesse during the Great Depression. He Grandparents named him Little Tree. He is taught how to hunt and survive the mountains the Cherokee way, taking only what is needed by his Grandfather. He is taught the joys of reading and education by his Grandmother. He also learns the way of white businessmen and tax collectors and how Grandfather scared the away. Little Tree is sent off to an indian boarding school run by whites. We learn of the cruelty of indian children. Little Tree learns how the world differs from the Cherokee way.
The WORST book I ever recorded...
When I was first chosen to narrate this book, I knew nothing of the racist past of it's author -- I knew only that it was the single worst book I'd ever been assigned.The negative AudioFile Magazine review of my recording (quoted here on Amazon) is completely fair.Reading the book to myself in order to prepare to record it, I found it annoying in the extreme -- the so-called prose is precious and poorly written, and the allegedly authentic colloquialisms are grating.When it came time to say it all aloud, for the first time ever (and I've narrated upwards of 200 audiobooks) I found it impossible to invest this piece literary flotsam with any emotional content whatsoever.As declining the job was no longer an option, I merely tried to stay out of the way and give it as simple and logical a performance as I could, but I was unable to compensate for the God awful writing, and unable to disguise my contempt for the entire enterprise.It remains the worst recording I have ever done, and I was, for a time, quite ashamed of it.Now that I discover more about it's hate mongering author, I'm actually pleased that the recording stinks.I now believe I gave this garbage exactly the reading it deserved.(I must add that I learned a valuable lesson: never record a book you loathe.I was subsequently offered the execrable "Left Behind" series for young adults, but having suffered through "Little Tree," knew better than to lend my voice to the spewing of "Christian" hate.)

Loved the courage of this child
It Seems like everyone is trying to compare him with his brother. It shouldn't matter who got beaten the worse, their both strong and brave because they survived. I think the brothers should have help each other alot more. And their dad was a disgrace. It's just ashamed the community let this happen, And did not put her in jail for all the harsh stuff she did and they also had proof of it.
Following his brothers footsteps
I read all of David's books and was very moved..however Richard's seemed to hit alot of the same incidents..in either case I can't believe no one ever spoke up to help..I do feel David's books were better written .. I feel bad anyone would have to go through life as they did.. I wouldn't pass this book as I feel it almost reads the same as David's

Amazing story
This book was amazing. The hell Richard Pelzer and his brother David were put through makes you wonder how a mother could ever harm their child. I couldn't put this book down as I couldn't put David Pelzer's books down either. A book close to my heart
The book has been the best book I have ever read.
Where does one get the strenght to carry on?
A marvelous book in which a man tells his personal experiences and thoughts in dealing with a stroke that left him completely paralysed,speechless and able only to move one eyelid. It is amazing that he found a way to tell his story and it will show the reader what a slender thread it is by which we all cling on to life. It is a wonderful moving read and will surely leave one with much to think about. I also read many of the very personal reviews that customers have written.
Unbelievably beautiful
With every page, every sentence, every word....every letter....I try to put myself in Bauby's stiff-backed wheelchair and imagine the pain (physical, mental, spiritual and emotional) he was going through at the time. And you know what? I probably didn't even scratch the surface.

Save yourself the time.... Xmarks the worst book
Save yourself the time, money, and paper and simply find a friend who likes to tell their life events in a melodramatic and neurotic way. Listen to that person jab for 5 hours and you've officially read the book! This book asserted my wish to NEVER be a therapist because I would simply tell patients like her as one of her therapist did to kill herself.It's harsh but my goodness after this book I just felt like a leech sucked all the life out of me.

Wurtzel seems to enjoy her misery
I read Prozac Nation because I had heard it was a good book and I myself have been struggling with depression for a lifetime.I have a family history of it (brothers and grandparent's suicides), plus traumatic childhood.
Please shut up
Anyone who has experienced severe depression for decades will not be willing -or able, in some cases -to put up with Wurtzel's whiny memoir.

Kitty Got it Right
In 1995 my husband had exhausted all traditional treatments for depression.The Duke neurologists sent us to Menninger in Topeka, KS for ECT. My husband had 15 treatments.He left the hospital the week after his last treatment.(He was a retired Executive who had become catatonic in his depressive-state).He then began living again...He returned to his Gentleman's Farm in North Carolina and re-took the reigns.He had more energy than I did, and I was 30 years younger...
Truly Informative
My Psychiatrist mentioned ECT Treatments some time ago and I immediately dismissed the suggestion based on my ignorance of it.I was uninformed and afraid of it.But, after reading this book, I'm going to bring up the subject of ECT Treatments next session.I don't know what will happen, but ECT is now an option for me to at least seriously consider.

The most amazing book I've ever read
This book touched me where no book has ever donw before... it changed my life and i think everyone should read it, because it applies to everyone with problems. What none of us realize is that borderline personality disorder is a much more common problem that any of us percieve it to be. Borderline Personality Disorder is just a name for a much deeper issue dealing with one's childhood that causes them to act the way they are. This is your neighbor that screams at her kids, this is your mailman who hates his job, this is you parents that you fail to understand, this is you and almost everyone around you. Everyone needs to read this book, once again, I'll repeat, it changed my life.

A must read!
While reading this book, I realized that I had experienced so many of the same things the author experienced.After 8 years of therapy, I realized along with my diagnosis of PTSD, I also suffer from BPD."Get Me Out Of Here" helped me face some of my own issues and has helped me open up new dialogue with my therapist so that I can heal too.I encourage anyone who suffers from BPD to read this book.I am on the road to recovery and consider this book to be a turning point in my own recovery.Thank you, Rachel Reiland, for your honesty and willingness to share your experience.

Essential reading for mental healthcare counselors
Okay, I did not know what to expect when purchasing this book, but I was intrigued by the synopsis. As a Board Certified Member in Expert Stress (BCETS)and a member of the American Academy of Experts in Traumatic Stress (AAETS) actively involved in treating veterans returning from Iraq and Afghanistan, I suggest this should be required reading for EVERYONE in and considering on entering into the mental healthcare profession. Rachel eloquently elaborates on, not only what it is like to live with BPD, but describes the epitome of professionalism in counseling -- transference, boundaries, self-disclosure, and counseling metodology. I wish that I had read this book early in my journey in counseling. It is directly applicable, not only to BPD, but as dissociative identity disorder (DID) and other DSM-IV-TR disorders resulting from trauma in which transference is an issue. Fast paced, educating account of extreme mountaineering
Mr. Krakauer's account of the deadly trip to the top of Mt. Everest has a credibility to the story that many other action filled, non-fiction works have.Due mostly to the fact that Mr. Krakauer was a reporter who was there, a member of a team who witnessed the way the disaster unfolded in one of the most unforgiving environments in the world.His book is a chronicle of the things that went wrong with the expedition, things that were red-flags to those there but were not heeded.Some of the book deals with the commercialization of Everest, where if you have the money, you can find a guide that will risk your life, his life and others lives to get you to the top.Some of those who died were Everest guides, people who knew the signs of things going wrong, yet they still made the fateful decision of pressing on for the summit.Part of the book, about Beck Weathers is amazing and does give some hope to the extents and abuse the human body can take with a certain frame of mind.Albeit, it cost him his hands and part of his face, the fact that he survived is amazing none-the-less.
Read "The Climb," too...
I give "Above Thin Air" 5 stars because it is a magnificently written work about Everest, but Krakauer's venom towards Anatoli Boukreev was and is inexplicable when the facts of that night are laid bare.
Non-Fiction at Its Best
I couldn't put this book down. To be honest with you, I rarely enjoy non-fiction, yet the way with which Krakauer creates tension - something that most likely is not that difficult as Everest on its own is a formidable place - is as effective as some of the best fiction writers out there. I was also impressed with how he was able to situate the expedition and the characters involved within the rich tradition of Everest mountaineering. His descriptions of Hall and Fischer are remarkable and he has immortalized them for the general public as they have been immortalized with climbers for years. I also like the way with which Krakauer is honest about what he is and is not sure about concerning his account. Being above 26,000 ft. makes it very difficult to be sure of what took place. This book's controversial topic of cannibalism made it stand out from other books. Although some parts of the book dragged on, the book was overall a page turner. This book is about a clan of men and women: rugby players, their friends and family, and a few other passengers, that crash in the Andes. In the end, only sixteen men survive and to survive they have to eat the bodies of their dead friends. I like how this book describes the main characters' personalities in an accurate and honest way. It had Potential...
Avoid this book like the plague.
Achingly honest and touching memoir from a real human being
Many reviewers have beautifully reviewed this haunting memoir. I just wanted to add how touched I was by Lucy's struggle, not to be special, but to be normal. Her memoir describes acutely the psychic distress of finding oneself outside the norm in society. Despite Lucy's struggle for acceptance and normalcy, she still displays true wisdom and strength from her "outsider" perspective. Some think her stance toward others is unsympathetic, I found her to be as unflinching in revealing her thoughts and found her level of awareness of herself refreshing, if self-oriented, at times. There is something about standing out in an unwanted way that can create a barrier between us and the rest of the world and perhaps Lucy had a protective barrier that closedher off from others. Who am I to judge, I just stand in awe of the courage she displays time and again.Other reviewersalso criticize Lucy for not overcoming her need for acceptance, or normalcy. I can only thank Lucy for incarnating and being who she was, so honestly, so vulnerably, and for offering us an uncensored, heart-breaking, and ultimately revealing view of her experience of the world. I am sure many will resonate with the experience of being "outcast" and feel we have a friend and supporter in Lucy. Thanks Lucy, for not putting any masks on in your writing but allowing us to see youin your true complexity. I salute you wherever you may be.
The Spiral Staircase Revisited
This book was much better written than Karen Armstrong's The Spiral Staircase but it was the same whining and self-pitying all over again. The author had no real feelings about her father's death yet she can't understand how people lack compassion for her deformity. When a woman who had had a mastectomy spoke to her about her own deep feelings of ugliness and loss, she dismisses the other woman's feelings because no one else's suffering can be as great as her own. It seems like she could only think of herself, her own feelings and her complete misery at being "ugly" without the slightest inkling that other people might have feelings and tragedies in their own lives.

Reading Tuesday's With Morrie touched me deeply, since I struggle everyday with a congenital heart problem--and I never know when the next day may be my last.Morrie's wisdom, humor and expriences is brought through from Mitch Albom's terrific writing.Morrie's words cannot be more insightful and wise as my body is beginning to break down....I re-read his book quite often, so I can feel uplifted.

If you've read Tuesdays with Morrie, then this has to be a companion read.They cover the same material but In His Own Words definitely makes you, as the reader, think of your own immortality and how to better yourself so that in the end, you will have contributed all that is important to you.

Wise advice for the dying, plus a little bit for the not-so-dying
Schwartz, the protagonist of Mitch Albom's Tuesdays with Morrie, gives candid, helpful advice about making the most of your remaining days or months or years. I read Tuesdays with Morrie and thoroughly enjoyed the insights into listening to and caring about others. Albom did an effective job of culling out those parts of Morrie's advice that applied most readily to those of us who don't feel that our deaths are imminent.
