Meyhaley Lancaster is truly the most weirdly interesting creatures to come along in the 20th century. what makes it more interesting, is that her nephew and i was very good friends .Joe Arrington was the son of Marvin and Mary Arrington ,born about 1927.There was nothing weird about joe but he said years after mehayles passing the locals kids were still finding coins under her cabin.

4-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Political Biography
J. R. Parten was a different type of Texas oilman and this well researched and documented study of his life is a fitting tribute to a man who gave much to civil liberties.Parten had to grow into being a champion ofliberties, and this excellentbiography of Parten political involvementtells the story in detail. What is missing is the rest of Parten's lifethe reader learns little of his business activities and less of hispersonal life. What kind of business manger was Parten? After reading thebook I don't know. His family life and personal relationships are skimmedover. This book presents a different story on the founding of theGreat Northern Oil company than J. Howard Marshall told in hisautobiography. The author interviewed Marshall, but discounted his pointof view.I would also like to know how Parten managed his relationshipwith Fred C. Koch, one of the founders of the John Birch Society when theywere both on the board of directors for Great Northern.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Best Mountain Writer
Chuck Kinder's redneck roots have served him well. Last Mountain Dancer, his "meta-memoir," is taken up with his childhood home of West Virginia. Readers are treated to everything from his adolescent years as a bona fide outlaw, pulling armed robberies with a sociopathic father figure named Morris Hacket; to buying all his dear old mother's crocheted comforters from an "artsy-fartsy artiste type" proprietor of a craft store so that his mother, with months of no sales, wouldn't feel "lower than whale bowels on the bottom of the ocean;" to packing a half-dozen brazed possum sandwiches and long necked Budweisers and driving the West Virginia hills with his sister and brother-in-law; to his fascination with a paranoid West Virginia Elvis impersonator named Jessico White, the last mountain dancer of the title; to an impassioned defense of Sid Hatfield, the fabled coal miner's advocate murdered by West Virginian authorities in 1921. The book is stunning both for its honesty and for the force of his prose. Often, Kinder's most beautifully written prose accompanies descriptions of horrible events or the most painful self-discoveries. For example:

5-0 out of 5 stars Beautiful Character Weaving
Janice Holt Giles takes you to a small place in Appalacia and begins weaving a picture of the people, the ways of life, the long time traditions, and the religion that is deep in the heart of the country. She does it in a way that actually made me fall in love with the people and yearn for a simpler life (even though logically, I know I would have a hard time adapting to such a life). It took me a long time to decide to read this book because the cover is not engaging, but once I had started, I had a hard time putting it down!

1-0 out of 5 stars 40 Acres and No Plot
This was the worst book I have ever had the misfortune of reading. You see, I had to read it for school. I am 13 years old. Now, don't get me wrong, I'm not just a stupid 13 year old who hates everything to do with reading; I LOVE to read. I usually like all the books I read, this is the first one I absolutely hated. No offense to the author or anything, but do people really care how she likes her biscuts? Or does she really think we care about the music for the song "Jesus Hold My Hand"? I mean, give me a break! So those of you who want to read this book, please consider this before wasting your precious money on this excuse for a book.

5-0 out of 5 stars What a wonderful book!

This book was extremely disappointing to me.I found so many incorrectstatements that I wonder about the parts with which I am not familiar. Maryland history is of great interest to me, therefore I was anxious toread Builders of Annapolis. In the very beginning of the book it is writtenthat settlers of Maryland were mostly Catholic. It takes very littleresearch to determine that is an incorrect statement. The errors went onfrom there -- too numerous to enumerate. The author had such aninteresting idea for writing about some of the early Annapolitians.Whydidn't he do a better job with his research?I am sorry I bought thisbook. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Stunningly Beautiful, Moving Portraits Capture Texans
This is a beautifully photographed coffee table book picturing Texans from small towns and large cities all over the state. Photographed by Michael O'Brien, a photographer with a background in photojournalism, the book spotlights Texans as diverse as Willie Nelson, Lady Bird Johnson, ZZ Top, small town chearleaders, ranch families, and Laura and George Bush.Michael's wife, Elizabeth O'Brien, a writer, captures each person in a sensitive, personal interview which describes each Texan in that moment in time. The Face of Texas would be a wonderful gift for anyone who lives in the state of Texas or has friends or relatives there, or for anyone who appreciates beautiful photography or Americana.

4-0 out of 5 stars Outstanding!!
The Face of Texas stands out within the array of Texas books that have been published in recent years. The photographs by Michael O'Brien--portraits of Texans, both famous and ordinary--are stunning; and the subjects themselves, from celebrities like Earl Campbell and Lady Bird Johnson to regular folks like painter Ran Horn of Van Horn, TX, the self-described "Van Gogh of Van Horn," and Ila Johnston, the beloved, retired Spur, TX high school teacher who just renewed her Texas driver's license at the age of 97, are fascinating individuals. The pictures in The Face of Texas are accompanied by well-written, plainspoken stories by Elizabeth O'Brien about each subject. The text and photographs combine to create a substantial picture of each person that transcends the visual; both writer and photographer treat their subjects with warmth and respect. The book is not meant to be a definitive portrait of Texas; as photographer Michael O'Brien says in his introduction, it is simply a collection of his favorite portraits taken over the years on assignment, primarily for various magazines. Bravo for O'Brien--what a phenomenal photographic journey!

5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful portraits of Texans
This is a beautiful and expressive collection of portraits of a wide variety of Texans, from the famous to unknown, real Texans. O'Brien has a great sense of light and clearly connects with his subjects, who are often pictured in their environment, so that you get a real feeling for the place as well as the people.I highly recommend this book for anyone interested in photography or Texas. ... I purchased this book a couple of years ago. I was taken with it right away. It brings back wonderful old memories of Christmas long gone. It is beautifully illustrated!! The illustrations attracted me to the book, the words won my heart!

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Christmas gift!
I loved this story of a time in rural Texas before life was so rushed and hectic. This is a beautifully written and illustrated story and a wonderful Christmas gift. I originally was interested because of the author, Elithe Hamilton Kirkland. And this book gives a new look at her altogether. I gather it is a true story written by Kirkland for friends and family and then this publisher picked it up to share it with a larger audience. My husband and I have given many copies of this book to friends who have loved it. They all identify with the relationship between the girl and her family and the wonderful old-fashioned Christmas. What a great Christmas gift for such a reasonable price! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Much needed biography is very well written
When I began reading everything I could find on the history of Amarillo, Texas, one name kept coming up: Mathew "Bones" Hooks.I could find nothing in the library that was devoted to such an interesting man, so it was fantastic to learn about the publication of this book.It details the story of a man that did not let the customs of the time lessen his dignity or influence. He may not be as famous as other minority leaders, but Mathew Hooks, in my opinion, deserves this book and a place of honor in history.I am grateful to the author for the thorough research--the addresses for long-forgotten community hubs add to the fascination, as well as the interview material from people who remember Hooks. The author does a good job of documenting and explaining the various ways in which Hooks made the Panhandle of Texas a more peaceful place for people of all races. ... Interpretations of books may differ, but most readers agree that an author's lot in life is to unlock diaries, tell secrets, and share the intimate thoughts of their characters. But when it comes to sharing theirlives, some authors are more willing to bare their pasts and share theirinspiration than others. Eudora Welty did not embrace the notion of herlife populating pages of a biography, yet Ann Waldron portrays the authorin EUDORA: A Writer's Life in a way that will surely prompt a renewedinterest in her works.5-0 out of 5 stars Rewarding glimpses into a remarkable life
I spent most of the weekend immersed in this book--and becoming enchanted with Eudora Welty.Monday I was at the library getting several of her works.I wanted to start at the beginning, so I read her first shortstory--Death of a Traveling Salesman. It was as gripping and powerful as Ihad hoped. This biography is respectful and insightful. It provides youwith a strong sense of a gentle, talented southern lady who was absolutelytrue to herself and the world in which she spent her life and nurtured hertalents. I am looking forward to reading everything Eudora Welty wrote andgetting to know her.And it all began with this biography.

1-0 out of 5 stars The Petrified Biographer
This is a terrible, mean-spirited attack against our greatest living writer, attacking her looks, her private life, etc. Eudora Welty has said throughout her life that she didn't want a biography written about her. This woman obviously does not respect her or she would respect her wishes. And why do such a book at this late date, with Miss Welty about to turn90?? The author coyly pretends to be an admirer and then makes endlesslurid allusions to a lady who basically has devoted her whole life tocultivating her art. Our most gifted writer is dismissed as a homely, unwanted "fag hag." (Judging by the photo of the dust jacket,Miss Waldron is no Hedy Lamarr herself). What would Edna Earle say aboutsuch a woman!!Don't buy this garbage. Buy another copy of one of MissEudora's books instead. You'll love it and it won't upset your stomach. To think some poor trees had to be slaughtered for this trash!!By theway, Happy 90th Birthday to Miss Eudora Welty who will certainly survivesuch a infantileattack as this. And someday an HONORABLE biography abouther no will doubt be written. ... 2-0 out of 5 stars Son Of The Rough South
My granddaughter recommended this book to me.She is studying the civil rights movement at Rutgers University. It is one of the most outstanding books I have ever read.It is sad, funny, colorful, and true.
5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent reading
I was motivated to buy this after hearing the author interviewed on NPR.A native of Mississippi, I was interested in his accounts of the Neshoba County murders of three civil rights workers, and of the riot which occurred on the Ole Miss campus when National Guardsmen arrived to help James Meredith enroll there. The author has been present to record, and sometimes participate in, history, but the most interesting part was his recollection of his impoverished Depression-era childhood. The writing style is conversational and easy to read. You can definitely tell he's a journalist by trade.Well worth any price you pay.

5-0 out of 5 stars Tells Us a Lot About Ourselves... Excellent!
Son of the Rough South is a journey back into a meaner time and a gentler time, a time of grace, and a time hardness, a time of brutality, and a time of courage, and above all, a time of dignity and nobility, the best stuff of humankind. It is the true story of Karl Fleming, a hardworking reporter for Newsweek magazine, who in his role as southern district correspondent covered the civil rights movement from 1961 to 1968 and had a front row seat for such tumultuous events as the desegregation of Ol' Miss University by James Meredith, the bombing of the 16th Street Baptist Church, which galvanized Martin Luther King and his followers, the shooting of Medger Evers, the murders of the three young civil rights workers Schwerner, Goodman and Chaney, and the assassination of Bobby Kennedy.

5-0 out of 5 stars Delightful
David Hunter pens a wistful memoir of his childhood in the hills of East Tennessee (with a short stint in South Carolina). As a child, Hunter was precocious and imaginative - a boy who could make arrows out of reeds and bottle tops, turn an adding machine into the control board of a space ship, and transform any number of common household items into innovative toys. Always tagging along was his little brother, Larry, reminding this reviewer of a 20th century Tom Sawyer and Huckleberry Finn. The stories told are delivered with humor and wit, in an engaging style. Hidden within the text of each chapter is a subtle moral learned by the delightfully adroit David. Hunter has grown from an imaginative boy into an imaginative man, whose creativity as a writer brings pleasure to his host of fans, of which I am one. I thoroughly enjoyed reading this book and recommend it highly.
5-0 out of 5 stars Perfect gems
Hunter's collection of memories are perfect gems. Each is a complete story that tells us about a childhood incident. It is a warm retelling of childhood adventures and misadventures. His honesty andhumor shine through the entire book making it a pleasure to read and a great break from a hectic day.It doesnt make me long for those long lost days, but Hunter's book makes me glad he lived them and is willing to share with us.

5-0 out of 5 stars Loved it.Tells it like it is.
This is an account of the boyhood of David Hunter, a retired police officer from Tennessee. He is now a columnist for the Knoxville News-Sentinel.His book touches the heart, truly, with its frank account of his humble beginnings, which have culminated with him as published author of some six - eight books, I've lost track. His other books are about his police experiences, and will make you laugh and cry.His stories are funnier than any cop stories I've ever read, and more true to life than anything of Wambaugh's (they ARE true, every one but JigsawMan, which is a fictionalized account of a true story).Read the other books, they're even better than this one. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars MY FAMILY'S STORY
Dr.Kibler told me that the most common remark he heard when he was signing books for his first promotion of Our Father's Fields was "this is my family's story." I believe anyone from the South who has knowledge of their ancestral past can say the same thing after reading this book.It does have a common theme of settling, nurturing, and loving a land and the people who helped make that land what it was and to some extent, still is today.Painstaking research was done over many many hours as detailed in this book.Having visited this home twice I can tell you that you feel the history and people here. The only warning I would give you is do not buy this book if you are looking for the usual pablum issued forth by the New York Times best sellers about the South. However,if you want a healthy dose of truth about her and her people then you can't do better then Our Father's Fields.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Love for the Land
James Kibler does a masterful job of relating the story of a South Carolina family and their home on the Tyger River. Not only does Kibler tell a compelling story, he conveys the uniquely Southern question of the property ownership.Do you own land or does the land own you?In the South, one does not just own property. He does not simply possess a piece of real estate. The land has prior claim and possesses its owner. In turn, the owner of record becomes its custodian and responsible for all that came before him.5-0 out of 5 stars An Ancestors' Repsonse
This work by Dr. Kibler reveals the history of this family, their life style, the impact that the members of the family had on southern society during that time period, and the impact of that time period on thefamily.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars The strength of spirit
Though Emma writes from the perspective of the losing side of the Civil War, and though her beliefs on race clash greatly with our times, her persistence in the face of horrible suffering is a magnificent example to us all.She stands as testimony to the powerful spirit of the South and of Southern women in particular. Were we as committed to the ideals of our day as she was to those of her day, ours would be a powerful society indeed. Her diary is all the more shocking when you realize that she was only seventeen when she began writing ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Papaw
I am thrilled to see this book so readily available. Rob Storter was my Great Grandfather and was a wonderful man. His experiences and stories were remarkable. Although most know him as Rob Storter, we all refered to him as Papaw. As a family member I received a paperback copy of the original release and enjoyed reading it repeatedly. Not only because it is regarding my heritage, but because it was educational and entertaining. I highly recommend this to everyone!

5-0 out of 5 stars they lived here before the park
capt. rob storter never owned a camera, so when he wasn't fishing or working on a boat he drew or painted pictures and wrote a note netx to it telling about the scene. this book was compiled with those photo's and drawings by my friend betty briggs savage, the granddaughter of capt. rob. it is a testament to hardships of the mullet fishermen, local hunters and the women that lived in a time before manatee and wake zones fishing & hunting permits and the park put an end to a much better way of life. is a look at south florida before it was all gone and told by a man that lived it. thank's robert

5-0 out of 5 stars Knowing Captain Rob
I have not had the opportunity to meet Peter Mathiessen, but I could relate to his mention of sitting and listening to Captain Rob's tales, because I, too, have had that privilege. The book, Cracker in the Glade,is a collection of his ledger and it is written in his conversational tone. It is a recount of how Captain Rob saw the evolution of the growth inpopulation in south Florida and the consequential degredation of theenvironment as he knew it.He is not judgmental in his description, ratherit is matter of fact.Just as he viewed the hardships of living in Floridain the early 1900's as matter of fact. The reader is left with the sensethat he knows the history of the Collier County area, and the inhabitantsthat endured the hardships together. While they were separate familieswith their own trials, they were one as a family of pioneers in area thatwas as rife with dangers as it was beautiful in the pristene sense of thetropical paradise.Betty Briggs is to be complimented for her sharing ofher grandfather with the rest of us, so that we, too can know theadventures and evolution of this part of the Everglades. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Crackers.
Crackers were NOT the colorful common folk of Florida. Crackers were NOT Florida cowboys with whips. 'Crackers' were the bottom of the white social order in 19th Century Florida. Achille Murat, an early pioneer of Florida, said of them, "poor citizens, generally not very industrious who, not possessing the means of buying lands, live upon those of others, and work them until they are expelled by the proprietors. Their poverty is entirely the fruit of their idle and drunken habits.....every dispute is amicably terminated by the fist." 'Crackers' were vagrants and drunks and poachers and thieves and beggars. So the authors need to re-consider the title of their book. No self-respecting Floridians of the 19th Century would think of themselves as 'Crackers." The white-trash were 'Crackers.'

5-0 out of 5 stars This book is GREAT!
This book is a great book for anyone who enjoys a good, humourus, story. The first narrator, Geroge Gillet, is the Florida equivlent to Mark Twain. His humor and writing styles are remnants of a time long ago. The second narrator, Sarah Pamela, is a southern daughter caught in problems not of her time. It is her diary and her story of live in historic Florida. This book illustrates Florida as it has long been forgotten as the expanse of condos on the beach has given it a new face. This is a story of old Florida as it will never be totally forgotten. ... Read more
