4-0 out of 5 stars Daughter of a country doctor
Cora Frear Hawkins was born in Iowa in 1887. As the daughter of a rural doctor, Cora had the experience of travelling with her father on medical calls and assisting with his practice as she got older. This book is a memoir of those times with her father. It opens with a blizzard that he went out in just before she was born, and closes with his death more than forty years later. It is a slim volume and a quick, smooth read. The chapters are loosely grouped around subject areas such as the life of the wife of a doctor, the buggy and horses that the doctor used, and her period as an office assistant.

5-0 out of 5 stars A fine book
Among personal accounts of idyllic summers on a lake with kids and adults this may be the best. The author reprises her childhood on the lake (in Michigan) but knows that while she returns to camp there is no going back. Her writing is simple yet affecting. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars bias works both ways
The birth father of this poor boy was villified in the media merely for trying to get his son -- who was given up for adoption without his consent -- back. What parent wouldn't try to do that?
1-0 out of 5 stars Karen Moriarty's biases
I think before people read this book they should be aware that this 'therapist' is hardly an impartial counselor. She had a strong anti-adoption bias from the start, so any testimony from her on how Baby Richard is doing is automatically suspect. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Men who Made a Difference
Orville Wright, Wilbur Wright, James Cox, John Patterson, James Ritty, and other men have brought many great inventions and insight into the world of business, politics, and science. These guys are known mostly for their contributions to human progress but they also have one more thing in common: they all grew up and/or lived in the city of Dayton, Ohio, when they achieved greatness. Author Mike Bernstein wrote this book in 1996 to commemorate the bicentennial of the city of Dayton and to celebrate the many native men who helped change the world. 4-0 out of 5 stars Fascinating Review of Turn of the Century American Ingenuity
Mr. Bernstein does a great job bringing to life the interactions among the Wright Brothers, Boss Kettering, and John Patterson in turn of the century Dayton, Ohio.Did you know John Patterson (founder of National CashRegister)invented the canned sales pitch and direct mail marketing?Andthe way the book covers the five year period it took the Wright Brothers toconcur flight is spellbinding.I have purchased five copies of this bookto give to various friends, all of whom loved it. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Memories of My College Days at the U of M
My wife bought me this book for a Christmas present a few years ago.The author presents a very humorous account of his college days at the University of Michigan. Since I also lived in the same dormitory as the author,as well as in much of the same time period, I could vividly recall many of the people he descrbed in this narrative as well as many of the events.Jerry brought back to memory many humorous times in our lives as engineering students.I couldn't stop laughing because what he described was how it was in the 1950's and believe it or not those stories and events really did happen. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Once I started it, I couldn't put it down
'Sudden Death, Overtime' was one of the most inspirational books I have ever had the pleasure of reading. It was colorfully written and so attaching that I read for hours just to realize I had finished the book in one sitting.5-0 out of 5 stars Injustice in a small town!
My wife and I both just finished Sudden Death, Overtime.Despite quite a few typographical errors, it is the most compelling and best book I have read in years. Why?My bias may show, but 1. I am a teacher; 2. I know Dennis Courneya; 3. I lived in the town of Hancock for 3 years and could picture almost all the people he wrote about; and 4. my wife's father was the superintendent of schools in Hancock at the time Dennis was hired.I found this book to be straight forward (although, at times the trial transcripts were a bit confusing--the girls, like, really, like should like get rid of, like, too many "likes" in their vocabulary) and not an over glorification of the author. After reading the book I really felt like I was smacked in the face because, unfortunately, this could happen to any of us.I was appalled at the lack of action and concern by the teacher's union (yes, I am a member!), as well as the judge, the jury, and everyone else that was involved in this travesty.I also lost a lot of respect that I had for superintendent Larson and the school counselor, Carol Johnson. I applaud Dennis and his fortitude in surviving the trial, the prison, and everything else he has been subjected to.I'm not sure I would have survived it.I would LOVE to see this as a TV movie!

5-0 out of 5 stars Unacceptable Justice
Sudden Death Overtime is a spellbinding, compelling book that illustrates what should be unacceptable behavior by those involved in the legal system, including citizens on the jury.Read more
