5-0 out of 5 stars EXCELLENTbook from a bygone era
Born in the 1800's, Mr. Woodcock relates his experiencesfrom 50 years in the "tall timber".Ahead of his time, he expounds on the wisdom of closed seasons and game management. If you enjoy hunting; if you daydream of life in the mountains;this is a MUST read! In his folksy 'down home' way, he tells story after story of the rugged life in the mountains of Pennsylvania, as well as hunts in the west and south. If your son (or daughter) is new to hunting, GET THEM THIS BOOK!READ IT YOURSELF!Oh, to have been born in that long ago, forgotten era!Being from Pennsylvania myself, this has long been one of my favorite outdoor books, as I am sure it will be for you. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars A great book!
The greatest compliment I can give a book is that the writing is honest, because only with honesty can truth be gleaned. David Wyatt's memoir based on the events in his life after 9-11 does an excellent--and honest--job of capturing the contradictory emotions felt by many. But what I found most interesting about his book was his notion that small collisions or accidents between people and their lives often have far-reaching implications. I am glad that I took time to read David Wyatt's memoir--a truly transforming book.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Must-Read!
In a time when memoirs are lining the bookstore shelves like never before, Wyatt's _And The War Came_ emerges as one of those books that you'll read more than once, and then never forget. This is a writer who pays attention, a writer who knows the necessity for words as we navigate through the upheavals-and delights-of our lives. And so with the events of September 11th, Wyatt took to the page, chronicling "the days" that followed:
5-0 out of 5 stars Thoughtful, Emotional, Deeply Understanding
9/11 is one of those days that we all remember, I was in my office about 35 miles from the World Trade Center. Our controllers husband was on the 106th floor of one of the buildings -- they found him about 11 days later. There were a lot of stories that I remember. But I never thought to write them down and then to compile them into a book.

5-0 out of 5 stars About homelessness
I was hooked after I read the first few pages! A true story, that reads like a mystery! Laurie Anthony has captured the reality of homelessness through her experience with a homeless man. She tells his story (and hers) in such a honest, soul-searching way that I also examined my own beliefs and misconceptions about the homeless. In addition, the research she sites about homelessness, poverty, mental illness, shelters, welfare, and unemployment was informative and helpful. This book can be read as a memoir, a self-help book, or an introductory text to the problem of homelessness.

5-0 out of 5 stars One Women's Writing Retreat Review
Have a Great One! A Homeless Man's Story is about a panhandler named J.C. struggling to survive in New York City. But it is also the story of a womanon a journey of self-discovery. It is the story of the bond that can form between two people who make a connection by chance, and find enough courage to tell each other the truth. It's about coming to an understanding: that some mistakes in life can be rectified, while others never will. Yet, the message in the book is uplifting. If you let go of blame and let in compassion, you can grow and make a difference in the world...

5-0 out of 5 stars A Jersey Gem
Mike Kelly is the Jimmy Breslin of New Jersey, a writer with a deft touch who can portray the human side of issues, politics, and other areas where people become statistics or political rallying points. This is a wonderful collection of pieces displaying Kelly's empathetic touch. New Jersey receives a ton of bad press, but Kelly manages to portray the diversity, humor and underlying heart and toughness of the state in a way which blows the stereotypes out of the water. Highly recommended.

5-0 out of 5 stars Took me Home
I left Jersey twenty-five years ago, but the characters and places in Fresh Jersey brought it all warmly to life for me. There's a world view from the ground in NJ that becomes more clear after living on the other coast, and it springs to life in these pages. My personal favorite column was about the shad fisherman in the Hudson River. This is great stuff to give someone in the other 49 states who hails from NJ. Mine's going to another Jersey ex-pat. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars LIGHTWEIGHT, SILLY AND MARVELOUSLY MOCKING!
If he can make it there, he can make it anywhere. But Alexander Chancellor did not make it in New York, N.Y. -- the British writer was hired in 1995 by then-"New Yorker" Big Cheese Tina Brown to edit the magazine's mythical "Talk of the Town" section, and he failed. Miserably. His book -- the latest to join the rather long list of tomes "celebrating" the fabled magazine's 75th anniversary -- dishes as much dirt as Renata Adler's "Gone: The Last Days of 'The New Yorker'" (the best of the bunch), but Chancellor's Brit wit keeps them tamer -- with himself often the brunt of the jokes. He admits Brown had "her blind spots" and that "maybe appointing me had been one of them." Largely lightweight, sometimes silly, marvelously mocking.

4-0 out of 5 stars Alex and Tina
I was one of the many New Yorker subscribers who were dismayed at the announcement of Tina Brown's editorship of The New Yorker. This Brit, who came fresh from the glitzy "Vanity Fair", was to be at the helm of our elegant New Yorker? I felt her tenure was a disaster, and the only thing of which I approved was the addition of a much-needed Table of Contents.5-0 out of 5 stars A "must" for any fan of the New Yorker magazine.
A British journalist examines behind the scenes life at the New Yorker magazine in a blend of biography, gossip, Americana and social observation. Some Times in America provides an outsider's view of American culture andNew Yorker politics, with a special focus on Tina Brown. A 'must' for anyfan of the publication. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Truly wonderful
I did not grow up in an ethnically rich city like Passaic. In fact, the opposite was true, as I grew up in a suburb of Washington, DC. However, even though I did not grow up in the same town or even the same decade, there were amazing parallels.5-0 out of 5 stars A dance through time
Robert Rosenthal's book is a glorious narrative memoir. His style, naive, gentle and kind, takes the reader back into the uncomplicated moments of youth. In recounting his memories, we are transported through the history of Possaic, a town brimming with multiethnic culture. It is the essence of America and it touches your heart. I recommend this book ...it is a joy to read.

5-0 out of 5 stars A nostalgic look at a typical American town
I've been in New Jersey on a couple of occasions, each time just passing through on the way from somewhere to somewhere else.To the best of my recollections, I've never set foot in Passaic. But, after reading Bob Rosenthal's recently published book, Wonderful Passaic, I wish I had.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars "Life Happens" While You Are Planning Something Else
If you like books about real people in real situations, then this book is for you. Here is the story of a family, their struggle to achieve their dreams, and the obstacles they encounter along the way. Their dream of living in and off the country sounds simple enough, but... Where do you begin? What should you do? and How do you gather the courage to leave the comfort of your current lifestyle? These questions, and more, are answered as the Antony family builds an azalea nursery in the foothills of the Virginia Blue Ridge Mountains. 5-0 out of 5 stars REAL Life in Rappahannock County, Va
Anyone contemplating a move to a rural area should read this book. We all have romantic ideas of what it is like to live in the "country". This book will give you the reality. You will learn what challenges you will face and what rewards you will reap. If you are thinking of starting a plant nursery [after reading the New York Times article about Rappahannock] here is a great place to begin. Not only is this book packed with great information but it is also a well written book.[not always easy to find these days.] You will fall in love with this family's story. It reads like a novel and even gets off to a very quick start!. Buy it, read it, take notes, and enjoy it! PS If you move there I am sure you will meet them as everyone seems to know everyone there.

5-0 out of 5 stars An inspirational and enjoyable partial memoir
By nature, I'm a bit skeptical of books of this nature. But having said that, I must say that Mr. Antony quickly won me over with his honesty and humility.I tremendously enjoyed the thought processess, trials, tribulations, and joys that he describes -- what an amazing life, and what an amazing family. If this book doesn't provide an impetus to do just a little more with the short amount of time we're given, then I don't know what does. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Memories - for all of us baby-boomers!
Diana Dell has a talent for transporting the mind back in time and place - to the times that us baby boomers still remember with fondness. Her look backwards is also her way of dealing with the loss of her brother - without reminding us of that fact all the time. She has loving respect for her roots - her family and her neighborhood. She has captured those times and people and given us a snap shot of her heart as she grew up. The reader will find that they will get involved in all these people's lives that she introduces in the book. It is a book for both men and women to read. It makes a nice weekend reading journey as I have done this weekend.

5-0 out of 5 stars Memories Are Like Clouds
Memories Are Like Clouds is a beautiful, evocative memory of the bucolic and misty 1950s in a small town in Pennsylvania. Diana Dell's love of Kenny, her younger brother, her family and her 'place' screams off the page. I found myself chuckling often and when not chuckling, a twinkle nestled in my eye side-to-side to a stray tear or a chill.5-0 out of 5 stars Recollections of growing up in a small ethnic community
I enjoyed this book. The title is perfect for a work that snapshots growing up in a Polish community. My grandparents were Russian Jews (both sets) who came to America about 1912.Both my parents were born here.So much of the anecdotal tales of local characters, mom and pop shops, numbers running, close communities, mirrored so much of what I remember as a child. Overlaying the story and presented initially is the loss of a loved one in Viet Nam.This book relates how immigrant families sacrificed for their children encouraging their education that resulted in 2nd generation Doctors, Lawyers, Accountants etc. Its a wonderful book to read and struck many chords for me. ...
