5-0 out of 5 stars Canada, Please Let Dick North finish his quest
Awesome read, very well written with plenty of facts to back up Mr. North's work. You appreciate his passion for a definitive answer to who A.Johnson truely was. It is sad that the Canadian's refused to solve the mystery. Nevertheless, I am one of the believer's John Johnson was the Mad Trapper.

5-0 out of 5 stars Where' the justice?
Thes is a very interesting story. It is well written and well researched. It was also done by Rudy Weibe and Thomas P.Kelley.4-0 out of 5 stars Rat River Trapper: Mad or Misanthropic?
It was a bitterly cold December 26, 1931 when four members of the RCMP approached the small cabin of a mysterious trapper named Albert Johnson. There sole intent was to question Johnson about a complaint made by a neighbouring trapper concerning traps that had been tampered with. But without a word, the trapper fired upon the constables, injuring one. Shortly thereafter, Johnson had disappeared into the bush, thus instigating an epic manhunt that would last close to fifty days, and span some 150 miles.Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Dissapointing
Ordered this because it was suggested by Amazon as a book that might be of interest. This because I am so very fond of David Petersen's writing. Kerasote can't hold a candle to Petersen! He does not enlarge his subject to include any of the larger insights or issues, of which there are many imbedded in the subject of man and nature. From Melville to Petersen, we have struggled to describe and comprehend our relationship to society and nature. Kerasote adds little to the discussion.

4-0 out of 5 stars Sometimes we need to be wired
Enjoyed this great little book as I always do Kerasote's writing.I wanted to read it because he had written an article in an outdoor magazine 15 years ago on "Camping Beyond Aid" and I wanted to compare his thoughts then and now.
5-0 out of 5 stars Brilliant Outdoor Writing
This book was the first time I have read Kerasote - I completed it in two sessions.I thought it was brilliantly written. It had an educated style, which means I enjoyed occasionally checking some less common words (but cleverly appropriate)in my dictionary. This was an enthralling account of two basically dissimilar friends undertaking a great canoe trip down the Horton River toward the Arctic Ocean.I just wasn't willing to put the book down until the trip was over - the reader was right there with them.At one stage, I hoped for some photographs to supplement the map in the book - but then again Kerasote's writing was so good that I had a clear word picture of the events.Perhaps this was in keeping with the general theme of making do without everything on a platter?I found the historical notes provided a fascinating context for the modern day adventure. The professionalism of their outdoor skills was evident, and important for such a remote adventure. The potential 'clash' of the satphone was very much secondary to the description of the wonderful river trip itself. Actually, I thought the satphone was skillfully considered from a philosophical viewpoint - it was an issue that is very relevant now to modern mans interaction with serious wilderness adventure. This book was just brilliant stuff. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Best Of The West!
The Alaska-Yukon Gold Rush, a time at the turn of the century, when the gold camps were booming and the dust flowed like wine.Leaving behind law and many of the constraints of the Post-Victorian era, men and women went north to find adventure and wealth. Most found death among the cold frozen mountains and rivers but a few survived to find money, power and, sometimes, even love.
2-0 out of 5 stars Not Real Interesting
I was disappointed in this book, it seemed more like a history of the men of the Yukon and Gold Rush . There were some stories about some of these women in there, but they were not very interesting to me, just sort of dry and lacking the quality that you could see and picture the people-which is a quality I look for in books of a historical nature. If you like just a history of cut and dry facts about the Gold Rush and the men etc., this might be ok, but overall, the book failed to be interesting to me.

4-0 out of 5 stars Interesting side to the "gold miners"
Well, the men mined the gold, and the women mined the miners. All had unhealthy jobs but it would appear that more womem made money than the men from this book.It is also interesting that many of the women ended their trade by marrying the miners. So while to some they were "soiled doves" to the miners they were princesses.

4-0 out of 5 stars Really two stories in one book.
Krajick has written one of many books detailing the hunt for diamonds in the Canadian North.Unlike several of the other writers, Krajick devoted the first part of this book to the land itself. In a fascinating historical journey readers get to follow early explorers and native inhabitants across the most unforgiving wilderness on earth, with stops in the American Southwest, Africa, and South America thrown in to heighten the story.
4-0 out of 5 stars Fascinating
This book illuminates the possibilities of the frozen north unlike anything else I've read.

4-0 out of 5 stars UNDER POLARIS, AN ARCTIC QUEST. By Tahoe Talbot Washburn. Se
This marvelous book is a blend of adventure story, scientific diary, and ethnographic study. The author, Tahoe Talbot Washburn, accompanied her husband, Lincoln Washburn, to the Canadian Arctic in 1938-1941, helping himdo his graduate field work in the glacial geology of the region. The authorwas a keen observer of native people and their way of life. She recordedwhat we now see in retrospect as the waning years of a nomadic way of lifefor the Inuit of the Canadian Arctic Archipelago. Prior to World War II,many Inuit roamed freely across the high Arctic, camping in snow houses(igloos) constructed along the trail at the end of the day. The CanadianArctic Inuit were still essentially nomads; they did not live in or visitpermanent settlements, except for a few important events each year.Accordingly, governmental authorities and missionaries had to go onexpeditions to meet with the Inuit. Soon after the war, this patternchanged dramatically, and seemingly irrevocably, towards a more settledway of life. This book is made all the more fascinating because it providesmany glimpses into a way of life perched on the cusp of radical change. The Washburns were much more than casual visitors to the Canadian Arctic. They lived there for months at a time, including one extended stay fromAugust, 1940 to February, 1941. They spent precious little time indoors, preferring to move about the Arctic islands, hiking, boating, camping, anddog-sledding in winter. The scientific aim of this multi-year project wasto determine the extent of regional glaciation in the late Pleistocene, amuch-debated topic of that day. By collecting marine fossils and mappingtraces of glacial scouring in bedrock, Lincoln Washburn was able to beginthe process of reconstructing the extent of ice sheets during the lastglaciation. This thesis project marked the beginning of his long andillustrious career in glacial geology. However, geologic research is onlyincidental to this book. It brought the Washburns to Arctic Canada, butonce there, they fell in love with the land and its people. Both Lincolnand Tahoe relished the arduous Arctic lifestyle, where physical enduranceand mental acuity often make the difference between survival and death. They marveled at the ingenuity, patience, and sense of humor that seemed tosustain the Inuit through manifold hardships. Tahoe Washburn spent manymonths emulating the role of Inuit women, including daily food preparation(for both people and sled dogs), sewing of leather garments, and hidepreparation (including chewing caribou hides to soften them). Althoughlimited by not understanding the Inuit language, she learned byobservation. Her Native companions appreciated her efforts to follow theirways, and took the time to teach her many skills that few outsiders everlearned. The book is richly illustrated, with 107 photos and six maps.Although the material in the book was taken from diaries, it has beenwell-edited, never becoming dull or repetitive. I heartily recommend thisbook to readers interested in the natural history and ethnography of theArctic.Read more
