4-0 out of 5 stars A remarkable book
This is a remarkable book. It is a primary account of a child's life growing up in Montana and Canada in the early part of the twentieth century. Margaret (Peggy) Bell's life spanned some 94 years, from 1888-1982, and her story is as exciting and troubling as any account one is likely to read, fiction or non-fiction. That the book is edited by Mary Clearman Blew makes it not only highly readable but lends it undeniable credibility.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Expert Journalism on Thought
This is a very easy book to read; I hold this out as a virtue since George Grant was a very complicated man. Christian does well to stick to the facts of Grant's life and then when necessary add insight to the scaffolding. There is a human quality present throughout. The all-too-human is nottotally absent; although, it is obvious the author greatly admires Grant, and it is apparent Grant was his ad-hoc tutor, friend and dinner guest onmany occasions. The fruits of this familiarity are gossipy tidbits aboutGrant's dinner with Leo Strauss and Grant's squabbles with Fulton Andersonof the University of Toronto, among other stories. This biography can serveas an introduction to many of Grant's philosophical inspirations- SimoneWeil, Martin Heidegger, and Leo Strauss- as well as documenting animportant part of Canada's political and social progress (maybe Grant woulduse a word other than progress) from a colonial state to the fragileposition it now holds in the modern world. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Same old...same old...
I thought this book was more or less a summary of the other three books about Shania that I have read. It did have a few new things that I did not know and the pictures in the book are great, but I wish it wouldn't havebashed her on one page and then prasied her on another. I give it fourstars just because I love Shania and I really would read anything abouther.

3-0 out of 5 stars it was ok
i think this book was ok, but it was better than the one by dallas williams, and way worse than the one by barbara hager.3-0 out of 5 stars Could Have Been Better....
I am a come lately fan of Shania's and I was excited when I found the last copy of this at a local bookstore. The book was packaged as having some new and interesting insights on her life and work. Personally, I didn't likeit. It was simply a patchwork collection of old articles and rumors. Hepainted her in contradictory shades of hometown girl and calculatingmegastar. One has a hard time believeing that the woman he writes as beingvery in touch with her roots is also the kind of woman that would fire afaithful friend, by way of Fed Express. I think he should have enlisted thehelp of friends and Shania insiders in compiling his information in thisbook. There are some very nice pictures of Shania, but I think the boastthat they were never before seen photos are also inaccurate. All in all Idon't reccommend this book. ... Read more
