5-0 out of 5 stars Famous Men of Greece
This work is part of the "Famous Men" series brilliantly done byGreenleaf Press. Each book has a focus of a particular time period withshort biographies, and stories of those times. Some are legendary, but manyof the legends do have basis in fact. We are not full-fledged historians, either by academic training or career pursuit, but have found these booksto be a thrill to define the culture and thought of the time period. Theprimary challenge has been to keep the books in hand, as the kids love themand "borrow" them. It is fun since the stories are short and canbe acted out, or built with Legos, or enjoyed in any learning style. Theyare also easy to use, with questions for each lesson which you can discuss. For younger children(3rd-6th grades)it is a new experince, olderchildren(7th-12th grades) like the adult style of learning via discussion. In our experience, it can be helpful to get the small group of books thatcomes each "Famous Men" book, which will give you moreinformation (and neat things to do)in that time period. Each book is a treatboth visually and in the text.

5-0 out of 5 stars Whet their appetite for history!!
We used _Famous Men of Greece_ and the accompanying _Greenleaf Guide toFamous Men of Greece_ to teach ancient Greek history to our elementary agechildren. They loved it!The style is very story-like and makes a greatread-aloud.It cover Greek mythology, legendary historical characters, andall of the traditional famous men I wanted our children to know about. Although we are extremely conservative Christians, I found nothingobjectionable in the book.I think one of the other reviewers must betalking about another book!5-0 out of 5 stars Great series for history studies!!!
We are a homeschooling family and we have thoroughly enjoyed the"Famous Men" series for our world history studies. I highlyrecommend it!The "Famous Men" books are core texts and thestudy guides have helpful questions, vocabulary words, project ideas andrecommendations of other great books to expand the study. The "FamousMen" books were written in 1904.Greenleaf Press has republished themand written study guides to go with them. Contrary to the insinuation in aprevious review, the "Famous Men" books are not in use in the NewYork public school system unless an individual teacher chooses to provide her students with a classical education.Frankly, we chuckled at thepornography charge of the previous review. It is a bit of a stretch. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Something for everyone
I did not read this book: I devoured it in two days. And it's not a thin little leaflet by any means. This is a book that can be enjoyed by many audiences: those interested in the Amish culture (like myself,) health care professionals, and anyone who needs reminding that there are some outstanding people in this world.

4-0 out of 5 stars A look into the past
As an RN, I really enjoyed learning about how Dr. Lechman worked among the Amish, adapting his medical practice to fit the beliefs of the Amish and the sometimes limited supplies available to him. If you do not have a medical background you will still enjoy the book; the medical jargon is easy to understand and many times explained.

5-0 out of 5 stars Enormously entertaining!
I can't vouch for the accuracy or lack thereof,
1-0 out of 5 stars Brown University should be embarassed!
Not that one of its students had to strip her way through school, but because it graduated such a terrible, sloppy writer! I bought the book as a joke for one of my friends, a Brown alum, and I couldn't resist reading it before I gave it to him. I marveled at how poor the writing was. Maybe she overscheduled herself at the strip club and had to pull an all nighter to meet her publishing deadline, because that's what the book read like. Brown should be a little more selective in its admission policy. At least if you admit a skank admit a smart, articulate one!

4-0 out of 5 stars why all the hateful reviews?
I find the incredibly negative reviews of Ivy League Stripper interesting. I almost wonder if I read a different book than some of these people. Perhaps they were written by some of her rivals. Who knows?Read more

Editorial Review

Finding the right words at a time of loss can understandably cause a eulogist much angst and apprehension. How does one commemorate and honor a person whose life feels like a miracle and whose passing still feels incomprehensible? Fortunately, this book of eulogies can offer guidance as well as inspiration for the bereaved. For example, Wallace Stegner writes a specific yet universal memory to his mother Hilda: "I have a clear mental image of your pursed lips and your crinkling eyes, and I know that nothing I can say will persuade you that I was ever less than you thought me."Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars wonderful book of words from life's most difficult times
This book contains 50 eulogies (Rupert Brooke by Winston Churchill, Malcolm X by Ossie Davis, Robert Kennedy by Edward Kennedy, etc.); 42 letters of condolence (Herman Hesse to Thomas Mann, James Michener to his friends, RAF pilot to his mother, etc.); 50 elegies (songs or poems, by Langston Hughes, Emily Bronte, Noel Coward, etc.); and 110 epitaphs from the graves of Thomas Jefferson, T.S. Eliot, Hilaire Belloc and others -- my favorite:
5-0 out of 5 stars This book is amazing! Everyone should read it!
This is a great book. Everyone who is dealing with or has delt with the loss of someone should read this book! It will help them.

5-0 out of 5 stars Aphrodite in Jeans
Reading this introduction to single parent womanhood during what we men would call mid life crisis is a must read for all men who love women. This book, through I hope stretching reality, provides some insight into both the extended daily life and the sexual mindset of a midlife woman. Its ironic and satirical humor at time had me rolling on the floor. At other moments I would ask myself how women live through this.On the other hand I have a better understand of the game that is played so well by both sexes.Good book. You will not put it down until it has been consumed. Then I asked when to I get the next installment.

4-0 out of 5 stars Masterfully written
I'm not always a fan of reading other people's essays. There's a difficulty in reading the self-related experiences of others. Sometimes they filter their insights when you want more honesty, and other times they don't filter enough when you really wish they would just stop talking.
5-0 out of 5 stars GREAT STORIES + INSIGHTFUL + BEAUTIFULLY WRITTEN = A MUST READ!
As a relationship author and online advisor, I receive a lot of new books for authors and publishers to review and endorse. Some of the ones that I come across are only useful for a narrow audience, while others have tremendous value for the masses. This book definitely falls into the latter category.

5-0 out of 5 stars The World Needs More Richard Leutzingers
The more the world changes, the more it stays the same.Twenty years ago, hundreds of thousands of refugees entered Eastern Sudan to escape famine and civil war inneighboring Ethiopia.Today, millions inhabit refugee camps in Darfur(West Sudan) and Chad, driven from their villages by a brutal campaign of genocide, orchestrated by the Sudanese government. What both of these tragic episodes have in common, besides the geographic similarity,is the efforts of small bands of incredibly dedicated and courageous aid workers, selflessly risking their own health, safety, and comfort to help despirately ill and often starving residents in the refugee camps. Have you wondered what it would be like to be a humanitarian worker is such camps?Richard Leutzinger's book will give you a vivid account, based on his experiences in Eastern Sudan.Despite lack of electricity, water, decent food, medical supplies, and shelters in the hostile environment of 120 degree heat, roadless dessert terrain, swirling duststorms, and armies of flies, compassionate care was administered, lives were saved and were suffused with hope.Told with honesty, humor, and sensitivity,Richard Leutzinger's narrative will lift your spirits and make you thankful that peoplelike him roam this troubled planet.

5-0 out of 5 stars Real flesh-and-blood humans
Richard Leutzinger's A Scorching Hot Time in Sudan gives a vivid picture of what it's like to take part in a major relief effort.
5-0 out of 5 stars A look at the thrid world first hand
This book is a real eye opener to the poverty and health issues in eastern africa. The dedication and sacrifice of the individuals who take on this project, as described by the author, make you feel that you know them and are taking part in the health care they are providing. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars duller than I thought it would be
Certainly, the title character must have led an interesting life. But I found this book less interesting than I had hoped, just a listing of one event after another. However, I did get some sense of how difficult the lives of Jews were in Southern Europe; even Iberian Jews who converted to Christianity were never safe from Christians who were happy to accuse them of backsliding in order to have an excuse to confiscate their property.
4-0 out of 5 stars Hageriva (great, brave, and mighty woman)
This is the biography of Dona Gracia, a Jewish woman who lived in the 15th century and whose personality is characterized by intelligence, shrewdness, generosity, and religious devotion.Born in Spain, she went to Portugal in 1492, following the expulsion of the Jews.In Portugal she was forcibly converted to Christianity and became one amongst many "New Christians," "Marranos," or "Conversos."At the age of 18 she married Francisco Mendes, the richest merchant in Lisbon at that time.Seven years later she became a widow and successfully took over her husband's business.Determined to reach Turkey where under the protection of the Ottoman Empire she would be able to profess her faith freely, she embarked on a long journey, which took 17 years. This journey took her to London, Antwerp, Lyon, Venice, Ferrara, Ancona, Ragusa, Salonika and finally Constantinople.Throughout her perils she proved to be highly courageous and an excellent businesswoman. She used her wealth and contacts to help Jews escape the Inquisiton, became the self-appointed protector of the conversos, built houses of prayer and teaching, devoted herself to good works, and was know as "the heart of her people."5-0 out of 5 stars A great historical novel!

As a graduate student in English I have found this encyclopedia to be an invaluable resource because it centralizes a huge amount of information in the ever-expanding field of life writing very succinctly. This is the first encyclopedia of its kind and I would encourge more libraries to carry it as it is a great starting place for papers. Plus, the entries are extremely well-written and are by leading scholars in the field.

3-0 out of 5 stars Bland
This book is exactly what you'd expect from a book purchased at a gift shop at the Grand Canyon, bland.5-0 out of 5 stars fills an important gap
Although I agree with the reviewer who says that Mary Colter deserves a far better book, I still highly recommend this one, as at least it fills in a gap that's almost the same size as the canyon where Colter's buildings still stand today.More people should read it so that some will be inspired to write more!

3-0 out of 5 stars Mary Colter facinating but often overlooked architect.
"Builder upon the Red Earth" is not the slick tome of expensive color photographs and analytical drawings that Mary Colter's unique contribution to Twentieth Century American Architecture deserves. However, this essentially biographical book is the only one in print showing pictures and telling the history of Mary Colters extrodinary talent. It is not clear if Mary Colter's obscurity is due to the fact that she was a woman practicing architecture in a time when the field was dominated by men or if the remote Southwestern locations of her most interesting works kept them hidden form view, but it is high time more people took a serious look at her work. Colter's projects, which are "built ruins" foreshadow the work of Western deconstructionist architects like Antoine Predoc or Tom Maine.
