Although the subtitle of this touching, beautifully written volume indicates otherwise, the book is in fact a biography of the author's parents' troubled marriage.Writing with grace and generous doses of humor, Lyle (The Foraging Gourmet) describes her early years with her mother as a wonderful time when women in the community banded together to take care of each other.Family conflict began when her father, Marine Corps Brigadier General John Seymour Letcher ("the youngest officer in the history of the Marine Corps to have a General's command in battle") returned from the South Pacific of WWII an angry, controlling man who proceeded to grind his family into submission.The author explains that her mother had entered into a loveless union with a man who was by turns charming and viciously domineering largely because, as a woman, she was blocked form most other options.During the long marriage she was subject to depression, for which she was occasionally hospitalized.Lyle skillfully describes her own life-long struggle to differentiate herself from her father, in whom she saw many of her own traits magnified and distorted.Describing her journey to come to terms with him, she is as funny as she is frank, and emerges as a compelling figure, every bit as strong and capable as her father but without his apparently self-involved rage. ... Enormously entertaining!
I can't vouch for the accuracy or lack thereof,
Brown University should be embarassed!
Not that one of its students had to strip her way through school, but because it graduated such a terrible, sloppy writer! I bought the book as a joke for one of my friends, a Brown alum, and I couldn't resist reading it before I gave it to him. I marveled at how poor the writing was. Maybe she overscheduled herself at the strip club and had to pull an all nighter to meet her publishing deadline, because that's what the book read like. Brown should be a little more selective in its admission policy. At least if you admit a skank admit a smart, articulate one!

why all the hateful reviews?
I find the incredibly negative reviews of Ivy League Stripper interesting. I almost wonder if I read a different book than some of these people. Perhaps they were written by some of her rivals. Who knows?Read more

Delicious as Peruvian food

Being from neither here nor there
In Gringa Latina we have a character that his not Peruvian or Hispanicbecause her family comes from Italy, when she leaves Peru and comes to thestates she is a latina because she in not American, and so it goes that sheis never fully at home in either culture or though we get a brilliantportrayal of her youth in the South American continent. Excellent book.

A beautifully told story...
I really enjoyed this book.She did such a wonderful job describing Peru and the complexity of her feelings being a "Latina" based on geographic reasons, and "Gringa" according to her ethnicity.Ialso found it interesting how she was perceived when in America.Readingthis book also made me want to see Peru and all it's beauty. ...
