5-0 out of 5 stars A companero to us all
Frederick John Dalton is to be congratulated for this beautifully written and spiritually inspiring study of the moral vision that underlay Cesar Chavez's activism.Following in the tradition of Jesus, Dorothy Day and the Catholic Worker movement, and the Berrigan brothers, Chavez's orientation was biblical to the core.He preached and practiced nonviolent resistance, personal and group sacrifice, the transformative power of love and forgiveness, and individual prayer and meditation as essential tools in working for peace and justice.Unlike so many activists then and now, Chavez wasn't concerned with protesting and demonstrating just to say "No."More fundamentally, he was interested in working for social and economic conditions that would affirm people with a resounding "Yes!"Chavez's deep faith in God and the Gospel of justice and peace grounded that "Yes" and made it truly prophetic. As he himself said, "What keeps me going?Well, it's like a fire--a consuming, nagging everyday and every-moment demand of my soul to just do it.It's difficult to explain.I like to think it's the good Spirit asking me to do it.I hope so...If you really want something, you have to sacrifice.Because of my faith the concept of sacrifice is understood" (p. 162).Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Introduction to Jung
This is one of the best introductions to the thought and life of Carl Jung.It covers all of his major psychological concepts in clear and concise language. The author has also included several "exercises" to help the reader in their own journey towards wholeness. For example, in one section, the reader answers a series of questions and then one is able to determine what "Psychological Type" they are.Several other exercises focus on Jung's method of active imagination and confronting one's own shadow. The book, then, is not just a dry academic presentation of Jung's psychology.Instead one becomes actively engaged with Jung's theories and through the exercises one can see how his ideas relate to our day to day life.In this sense, the author has made Jung much more enagaging and richer than many other standard "textbook" type introductions. The book is well illustrated with several photos of Jung and his world.I highy recommend this for anyone who is new to Jung and wants a good introduction to his thought.I have suggested this book to many of my friends and despite its brevity, it does an excellent job of capturing the heart of Jung's ideas on human nature.

5-0 out of 5 stars "Must" reading for all students of Jungian psychology.
Carl Gustav Jung (1875-1961) is an amazing man whose personal researches and inquiries into the mystical traditions of Hinduism, Buddhism, Zen, Taoism, Protestant and Catholic Christianity, Gnosticism, mythology, andpsychology, created a profound influence on succeeding generations of truthseekers is presented and surveyed in a single volume that does full andcomplete justice to the man and his thoughts. Jung: A Journey OfTransformation will enable the student of metaphysical, spiritual, andpsychological insight to fully grasp this original thinker's manifoldobservations, insights, ideas, and findings. 5-0 out of 5 stars Well worth the effort
The book is a detailed chronological account of nearly three years of difficult travel between Zanzibar and Lake Tanganyika, circa the late 1850's. Nothing escapes Burton's observation. He writes of everything from the local hairstyles to the price of pombe (African beer). He gives detailed descriptions of the landscape, geography, flora, and fauna. He writes of Arabs and the Eastern slave trade. He depicts safari life in the days of human porters and mules. He tells of the people he encounters, though his descriptions of Africans may be offensive to some. There is a wealth of information here, something for everyone with an interest in Eastern Africa, or exploration, or imperialism. The place names have sometimes changed from Burton's time to ours, as have the English spelling conventions of Swahili words. Anyone with any interest in Eastern Africa, especially the precolonial period, should arm themselves with a good atlas and reference book and read Burton. Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A Different and Vital Perspective
I thought the book was excellent!I have read dozens of books about the Holocaust and this document certainly offers a different and vital perspective that has not previously been covered in the literature. As you progress through the book, it is quite clear that the after-effects for Holocaust survivors are persistent and nagging, and greatly affect them for the rest of their lives.Sophia Richman's experience demonstrates that tragic events that surround young children can stalk in their minds like "A Wolf in the Attic".

4-0 out of 5 stars A Unique Perspective on the Holocaust
"A Wolf in the Attic", a memoir by Dr. Sophia Richman adds a valuable perspective to the literature of the Holocaust. Dr. Richman was a hidden child in Poland who survived to tell her story of what it meant to transcend such an ordeal and then go on to try to strive for and fit in with normal life. This work is a unique exposition of a journey to overcome a traumatic past and to engage fully in life under renewed circumstances yet with the past just under the surface. The process of coming to terms with this dicotomy is at the heart of the work and is very moving.Dr. Richman has created a compelling narrative which reveals the two faceted experience of a life of achievement and momentum amidst unconscious symbols of tragedy. The fact that the author was successful in so many ways in overcoming her trauma is an inspiration. Her story is a special one amongst Holocaust memoirs. Dr. Richman's work is highly recommended for its humanity, complexity and poignancy. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Fame and the family
This very moving and fascinating book is a must read on several different levels. On one level, Sue Bloland is addressing an issue we are all so familiar with - fame and the human fascination with either achieving it or connecting with someone who has achieved it. Certainly, as she explains so simply and clearly, it is very human to idealize, envy and project many of our own fantasies (and power)onto the most successful people in whatever field they excel. As an analyst, the story she tells about her life with her father, Erik Erikson, expands and illuminates why some people are driven relentlessly to seek fame; what many issues the famous struggle with internally and silently, and what it is like to be the child in their shadow. She succeeds without jargon or over-intellectualizing in bringing to light the complexities of all these issues and in inspiring compassion for both the admired and the admiring.
2-0 out of 5 stars Ego Identity vs Despair
In the final stage of ego development, Erikson suggests that an acceptance of one's life is an indication of conflict resolution and maturity leading to end-life satisfaction. Having purchased the book because I knew and admired Harland Bloland prior to his recent death,I was eager to explore how this marriage and associationsmight have influenced thisbrilliant, humble and patient man who lived so generously in the shadow of others. Many of my questions have been answered about Harland, and my admiration for him has grown. While I did not have the opportunity to know Harland better, it is clear that he was, perhaps, the most centered member of the Erkison clan while he was with them.

5-0 out of 5 stars Another great book from Manhein.
Manhein gives an outstanding look at what is involved in being a forensic anthropologist. The book is full of inspiring stories about lost souls that finally find their way home, as a result of hard work by the police and Manhein's team of experts.
5-0 out of 5 stars The heart of their stories. . .
Mary Manhein's "Trail of Bones" is a wonderful book that offers practical insight into the lives of real people in law enforcement, victims, evidence and everything in between. Mary does not have to be overly descriptive in her accounts because the importance relies on the the truth and not some sensationalized version of truth. I like to think that captivating people are writing their own stories. She seems to care a great deal about the effect her work has on others. She does not try to impress us with terminology that is purely mechanical. I think this creates greater credibility to her work. She is someone who really inspires others like me in law enforement to never stop caring about the victims.

5-0 out of 5 stars Amazing Book!
This book was well written.Ms. Manhein always shows great dignity to a body when she is describing her work. She also shows great compassion for the family members of any victim.I love the type of work that she does. She gives credit where credit is due and inspires her helpers to the highest level, while expecting them to perform there. I hope she will write more books with such compassion. An Avid Reader. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Great overview of the influences on Einstein
This book gave a valuable overview of the influences of Newton, Faraday, and Maxwell, and how their discoveries led from Newton's inverse square law of gravitation, Faraday's electric and magnetic fields, and to Maxwell's work that mathematically described electromagnetic waves are the same as light waves. The book contains a few equations, but those do not need to be understood to appreciate the discoveries and contributions of the scientists who contributed to our current knowledge.
3-0 out of 5 stars The Precursors of Modern Astronomy.
Physics is the science of describing the physical world at its most fundamental level, and math is the language physicists use, the world of equations."Mathematics is our language -- a sublime creation of the human mind, built by countless generations from all parts of the world.A language of unity, both culturally and philosphically. It has given us a synthesis of waves and particles, energy and matter, language and reality, just as it embodies in its very grammar and symbols a synthesis of intellectual contributions from the East, the Middle East and the West. And it has changed forever the way we think about reality, and about our place in the universe."

4-0 out of 5 stars From Pretend Priest to Renowned Spiritual Writer
This biography of Henri Nouwen, who died in 1996, personalizes the Dutch priest, who was one of the most popular spiritual writers of his time. We learn early in the story that he was an outgoing, charismatic man who wrote about prayer and spirituality as well as issues such as solitude and the divide between rich and poor, always expressing his ideas in terms of personal experience. We see Nouwen growing up in Holland and moving to the U.S., where he entered a doctoral program in psychology, which he finished, despite growing discomfort with certain theories but more with questions about his suitability for this arena. We witness his special devotion to the liturgy, which first surfaced when he was eight and constructed a miniature chapel in the family attic where he delivered sermons to family and friends and carefully reenacted the Eucharist. Finally we see him find a true home living among those with mental difficulties at l'Arche Toronto
5-0 out of 5 stars A Familiar Figure Rates a First-Rate Spiritual Biography
Michael O'Laughlin enjoyed a close professional assocation and personal relationship for two decades with popular Dutch priest and spiritual writer Henri J. M. Nouwen. His biography reveals an insider's perspective and emerges as a true "labor of love."Strong suits of this treatment include chapters on Henri and the Eucharist, the centrality of Jesus in Henri's spirituality and Henri and prayer. The biographical data in the opening chapter and the section that follows that assesses Henri's psychology in light of Myers-Briggs categories are enlightening and balanced.Overall, this work strikes me as one of the most outstanding secondary sources available that treats the Nouwen legacy. As one who knew Henri over the course of three decades, I can honestly say that I learned more about him from this book than any other biography, including Michael Ford's excellent recent treatment. Helpful footnotes complement the text. It's affordable, highly readable, and enthusiastically recommended.-- Reverend Gerald S. Twomey, Ph.D.

Perhaps they really are just a pair of lucky people, but Milton and Rose Friedman are so perfectly matched that destiny must have played some part in their coming together. 5-0 out of 5 stars Probably the Best Autobiography I Have Ever Read!
This is a great book for anyone who is interested in Milton Friedman, economics, The University of Chicago, twentieth-century intellectual history, university politics, or rags-to-riches stories. Both authors have led very interesting lives and the tone throughout the book is upbeat and positive. This is one of the best and most-influential books I have ever read. Milton Friedman is one of the most clear-thinking, intelligent people of the twentieth-century and our country would be better off if more of his ideas on economics, education, and freedom were put into practice.
5-0 out of 5 stars God helps those who help themselves
Milton Friedman is one the of tough guy who always support the free market idea.He is the first guy who builds the monetary school and also a good story teller. He does do a great job and I guess that is not just luck.

5-0 out of 5 stars A fascinating account of two remarkable lives
The memoirs extend from the Friedmans' early years to 1997. The earliest times are recounted in separate voices by Rose and Milton, each telling her or his own story seriatim. For the later years, their narrative voices arepresented sometimes jointly and sometimes in tandem. This method adds agreat deal to the readability and interest of their story. It allows thereader to get different impressions of the same people and places andbrings out the (rare) disagreements between the two authors. It providesmore information and presents a more vivid picture than is typically thecase in memoirs by a single author....Read more

"Parallel Time" was an interesting book. It told a story about Brent's life and his struggle to be a writer. The message I got out of this book was that you are your own person and that you have total control over your life. I was able to read and visualize how Brent grew up as a black child, and how hard it was. By reading this story I have a better picture of how difficult being black in America was.

He had to deal with his father being an abusive alcoholic, and the obsitcals of growing up black and white. He went into good detail when he talked about each event that happend when he was young. he also talks about his brother being a drug dealer. He gives support of why his brother was already dead to him in his mind. He list all the things that were important to him. He was responsible in taking the role of his father. 5-0 out of 5 stars An incredible story about being human
This is such a wonderful read on so many levels. The title is a perfect play on words, considering the doctor's specialty. The actual story of the gifted ob's misjudgement is fascinating. The account of the therapy which restored her ability to function professionally is equally fascinating. It is tremendously life-affirming to see the humanity of the doctor. Realizing how deeply she cares makes me appreciate my professional colleagues even more. Too often in today's healthcare environment we see people focused on billing and it is easy to lose sight of the sincere desire to help and do good which draws people to the practice of medicine. This book should be required reading for every medical school and residency program.

Put the keys in the ignition and take this book for a ride.As you watch where you're heading, Dan paints a breath-taking portrait of the landscape.Like Mom's Marijuana, the focus is a patient's struggle through devastating illness, but this time Dan is the caregiver rather than patient. It's compelling.Once again, I only stopped reading when I was overwhelmed by sleep in the not so wee hours of the morning. You'll laugh and cry, and grow.

5-0 out of 5 stars a great read
If you are a fan of the narrative non-fiction genre, you will love this book. The author does a wonderful job of telling Dr. Amelia's story through his sessions with her, but also relates it to his own experiences of being a patient himself. It's hard not to be drawn to Dr. Amelia's character - and identify with her and what she's going through. Beautifully written, Dan Shapiro tells this story in a way that's clever and humorous, and has you captivated from the start. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars What a woman!
Great autobiography of Dr. Ruth! So many things that I didn't know about her: fled Nazi Germany at age 10, never saw her family again, lived on a kibbutz in Israel, was a soldier for the Haganah, then came to the USA, where she found her career and true love.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Great introduction to Freud with amazing illustrated slides.
The 'xxx for beginners' are marvellous not just because they give you a valuable grounding in forbidding subjects, allowing you to approach primary texts with more confidence, but because they are so entertaining, even in subjects you have little interest in.Though this book is a much-needed introduction to and exposition of Freud's basic theories, making you feel clever as you join the dots you always knew were there but for the intimidating jargon, the real joy is in the irreverent presentation, especially the illustrations. These are full of in-jokes about Freud's life and times which are not always treated explicitely in the text, as well as being technically expert, imaginative and, sometimes, bracingly shocking. So while it is pleasing, in these anti-Freudian times, to be reminded of the man's incalculable importance and influence, the illustrations offer an in-built critique that puts everything in perspective.Great fun.

5-0 out of 5 stars Sometimes a Book is just a Book
This book is just a book, but a better book than its successor of the same title by Richard Osborne. Mostly because it does not hang onto the relationship between Jung and Freud as long and focuses more on the theories of Freud. In fact, what I really enjoyed about this book is that gave a good round about summary of most of Freuds theories inside each book. Certainly acts a good stepping stone for those who need to know Freud in a hurry and wants the gist of his work. Richard Appignanesi displays good understanding of Freuds work and summarizes it well and concise. Reccomended for the prodigal psychologist.

5-0 out of 5 stars "I MAKE the world! This is my GIFT!"
(See page 79 for explanation and a very funny illustration of the second stage of psychosexual development). This book, in addition to being very informative, is also incredibly funny.Very well written and drawn; thoughin the form of a comic book, it is nevertheless a splendid introduction toFreud's life and work. The author and illustrator are quite witty as wellas knowledgeable, and in this book they have succeeded at what should bethe goal of all beginners' book writers: piqued my interest in the subjectand made me want to learn more.Would be a great supplementary text in acourse on Freud or on psychology/psychoanalysis in general.Highlyrecommended! ... 3-0 out of 5 stars Burn Victim's Experience
I was disappointed that there were only a few photos (which were printed on the page, not photo plates).I sympathize greatly with Ms. McBride's experience, which I have no doubt was absolutely terrible. When I received the book, I paged through it and was disappointed with the almost constant repetition of thought-lines that became rather tediious. If one were to cut out the repetition, the book would be about 1/3 its length.Very little is said about the OLA fire itself, and even the months of treatment and recuperation - while one could never say this should be "interesting", one would not expect it to be verbosely boring.By contrast, I found "To Sleep With The Angels" to be spellbinding and sobering.

5-0 out of 5 stars Well written and gives you an appreciation for modern medicine
With medical science now making great advances in treating burn victims using synthetic skin grafts (and hopefully with even greater advances on the way), this book brings home (through the personal experience of a survivor of the fire at Our Lady of the Angels) the deep physical and psychological scars that stay with a burn vicitm for life. The author refers to herself as a "burn," which also reflects her experience in a time when those with scars or handicaps were not viewed so much as people with difficulties, but instead as walking embodiments of their disfigurement. This book is well worth reading. I recommend it highly.

4-0 out of 5 stars Emotions will run the gamut from anger and sadness to joy
Michele McBride is an inspiration for all of us.Never again will I complain of little aches and pains, after reading what this woman endured for more than forty years after the tragic fire.I had no idea that being burned affects your muscles and joints making them practically unbendable, and also interferes with your circulation.Michele rose above the ashes of this tragedy and can teach us all how to cope with disaster. The most horrible part of the story is how the community in which it took place basically fell apart after the fire.Children, adults and clergy alike were encouraged NOT to talk about the fire at OLA, when talking and expressing grief would probably have been the best therapy for the survivors.I lived in that neighborhood and many people said that the neighborhood "changed" because of a shady real estate practice called blockbusting.I think the neighborhood changed because the heart went out of it when all those children died- the people couldn't cope and moved away.Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Entertaining; Hurmorous way of writing
This book is a really great read if you want to get a feel for Lillian Gilbreth's personality (which is a hurmorous, optimistic personality)or if you want to learn about her family life. But if you're writing a term paper, like I am, and trying just to get facts about her life and not cute stories about the children getting their tonsils out, then this is not the book for you. This is an interesting book, and I would recommend it, just not for the facts it gives you.

4-0 out of 5 stars Shedding light on an Oakland girlhood
As a city of Oakland resident, interested in 19th century life there, I was very happy to come across this book and read Mrs Gilbreth's childhood memories, visiting Lake Merritt, spending time with cousins, visiting her well to do grandfather at his grand estate (he is known as Oakland's first millionaire). I intend to share it with others I know who share an interest in Oakland's early history.

3-0 out of 5 stars Excellent for Gilbreth researchers; not for entertainment
While I agree with Ms. Collins' assessment of this book, and realize it is Mrs. Gilbreth's unedited writings, I found the book to be only a rather dry collection of memories.I guess I hoped to find another "Cheaper by the Dozen" or "Belles on Their Toes" for entertainment, which is a rather unfair expectation.Mrs. Gilbreth does not write to entertain. Her writing style is completely unadorned by either humor or color; she states facts alone (Frank and Ernestine must have inherited their father's humor).Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars highly recommended
It is refreshing to come across a biography of Freud--and an analytical biography at that--without an obvious agenda or an ax to grind:in other words, without idealization (Jones, Gay) or retaliation (Crews at his most sarcastic).
5-0 out of 5 stars "Darkness" is Illuminating
As one contemplates purchasing this biography, attention must be paid to the subtitle: "An Analytical Biography."This is not an all-encompensing portrait of Freud, in that it's not focussed on his many contributions.Rather, the biographer provides a rare glimpse into a man who's name has been omnipresent in all of psychology as well as the arts since his works first began to be published at the end of the 19th century.5-0 out of 5 stars Our Golden Sigi
He was the founder and autocratic (some would even say dictatorial) leader of one the most controversial, yet profoundly influential, intellectual movements of 20th century. While his own thought sought to systematically dismantle the prevailing medical orthodoxy of his era, it simultaneously introduced a new and even more rigid orthodoxy.Though he was largely uninterested in politics, he proved himself to be the consummate politician, always carefully calculating the effects his actions would have on his movement, the psychoanalytic movement, as a whole. He zealously recruited the best and brightest minds of the time, only to shackle and ultimately squander much of their individual creativity through an endless series of loyalty tests in which the more sycophantic and unquestioning you were, the higher you rose within the inner-circle.His fateful obstinacy extended even to his own physical well-being, as he continued to smoke his trademark pipe even after much of his lower jaw had rotted off from the cancer that eventually killed him.Read more
