5-0 out of 5 stars The wisdom of a young man: the folly of an old man
Horst Altaus has done here an excellent job.We are curious about philosophers as men and women because philosophy is somewhat more intimate than science, and Hegel was present at a time of rapid change: during the Napoleonic wars, he saw first hand his "dialectic" in which the German states were turned topsy-turvy by world souls on horseback.Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars unusual angel, jargony and a bit mean
I found this book to have used jargon and brevity at the points when it critiques LW and to be mean-spirited when it mentions the works of others. The author also takes an approach to LW's worh through a questionable diagnosis that he was dyslexic. While this an interesting angle, it's not enough to hang an introduction on.
1-0 out of 5 stars An utterly useless and ill-informed book
Hintikka has no sensibility whatsoever for understanding Wittgenstein's achievements in logic and the philosophy of psychology. He treats LW as a 'dyslexic' with personality issues due to his abandonment of great wealth. Rarely have I read a published work on LW which shows so little understanding of what he accomplished, especially in his post-TRACTATUS period of enormous intellectual fertility. LW's LATER work has been a source of inspiration in psychology, sociology, anthropology and linguistics to those who truly made the effort to understand what he was doing. Hintikka strikes me as utterly out of his depth here, perhaps because he is incapable of liberating himself from his irritating proclivity toward logicist regimentation. There is not a shred of insight in this meagre little book, but a whole load of self-flattery. Indeed, Hintikka regales the fine work of Peter Hacker as "less ambitious" - and that about a man who has spent his entire academic life producing several lengthy volumes of exegesis on the work of Wittgenstein, as well as several highly original Wittgensteinian analyses in book form. This was a paltry and often contemptuous little piece of work. Ignore it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Concise, helpful
I hesitated to review Hintikka's book, for having found it helpful marks me as one who isn't in a position to know if Hintikka isn't perhaps dead wrong in his interpretations. Nevertheless, I feel compelled to endorse this book. Many of us who have been introduced to W through his posthumously published Philosophical Investigations (PI) have, at some point, attempted to make sense of the Tractatus (the only book W published in his lifetime) and of the continuities and breaks between W's early, middle, and later work. Hintikka outlines a striking and plausible story of development in W's thought. Hintikka does an especially nice job in explaining the elementary objects of the Tractatus and of interpreting them as tightly related to but crucially distinct from Russell's (phenomenological) objects of acquaintance. Next, Hintikka presents specific problems that W grappled with in his unpublished notebooks, problems that led W (in 1929) to give up aiming at phenomenological language and to treat of physical language. Hintikka follows with a discussion of problems that later led W to focus on language games. Hintikka distinguishes between "primary" and "secondary" language games and uses the distinction to mark central points in the PI. Hintikka also gives advice for reading W's works, taking into account their structural tendencies, tendencies that Hintikka believes were exacerbated by W's (purported) dyslexia. Be advised that a few sentences, located in various spots in Hintikka's book, got mangled somewhere along the production line. But the attentive reader should be able to translate what was intended. To conclude: even if Hintikka's interpretation were shown to be wrong, he has produced a concise introduction that enables its reader to follow up by actually reading the Tractatus (I did). This is no small feat! ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars demise of public space
With a variety of historical references and cultural events to offer a sound foundation for the events thwarted and formulated by Debord, Jappe constructs an informative synopsis of the development of the situationalists. The transformative evolution from the LI (Letterist International) to the SI (Situationalist International)is explored, as are multiple situations which gained both groups recognition by intellectual circles. Well referenced, well written.

4-0 out of 5 stars Approaching comprehension with great praise
It has been so long since the original German version of this biography of Kant was written by Ernst Cassirer in 1916 (and first published in 1918, due to "the delay inflicted by the war on the progress of the edition of the complete works," (p. 2) according to the Foreword by Ernst Cassirer dated August 14, 1918) that it might be considered quite proper that the recent biography of Kant by Manfred Kuehn deserves to be much more modern in its point of view.My review of Kuehn's book emphasized how modern Kant ought to be considered for someone who lived in his times.Kuehn also put a major emphasis on Kant's desire for perpetual peace, a topic which might have been considered questionable for anyone writing in German at the time when Cassirer was writing this book for use as a supplement to the study of Kant's complete works.5-0 out of 5 stars What is Enlightenment?
One of the mysteries of the rise of the modern world is the sudden appearance of the grand phase of German philosophy beginning with the work of Kant, as his thought suddenly flowered late in life with his precipitousCritique of Pure Reason. Like an echo reverberating across the ages, Kant'sbreakthrough both recovered and surpassed the height to which philosophyhad reached in Plato. This thunderclap just at the takeoff of therevolutionary passage to a new era is the prelude to an entire new universeof thinking, and joins the world of science, the Enlightenment, with aworld as ancient as the Upanishads and as futuristic as Quantum Mechanics.Cassirer's philosophical biography is one of the clearest and most cogentintroductions to the Kant's life and work and is a classic in its ownright.

4-0 out of 5 stars A Rewarding Read
Over the past few years, I had increasingly developed an interest in the Kantian system.I had approached several of Kant's most important works in order to gain an understanding of his thought, but I found that I oftenstruggled to make clear sense of many of his ideas.Although I hadobtained a basic knowledge of his philosophy and some lasting insights fromthese works, I found that Kant's method of presentation often presentedsome difficulties regarding a complete understanding of them.Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars weird illustrations
I decided to pick this book up because I liked some other books of this serie. I have no prior knowledge of Barthes's theories, so I can't say whether the book itself is accurate. Overall the book is easy to follow, and the author seems very knowledgeable on the subject.5-0 out of 5 stars One of the Best from an Uneven series
I have now read several of the books from this series and, I think it is safe to say that the usefulness and quality of the books varies greatly. I like the idea of using cartoons to assist the reader in understanding difficult ideas. Unfortunately, the illustrations in some of the books add nothing to them but confusion. In addition, the writing can be flat and thick, the writer having failed to take the playfulness of the series into account. Introducing Kant is a perfect example. That having been said, Introducing Barthes is without a doubt the best of the 10 or so books of the Introducing series I have read so far. The writer shows a deep sensitivity when discussing Barthes both as a thinker and as a person, and he illustates a great deal of personal reflection regarding Barthes' ideas--this is not stuff straight off the shelf. This book was written by someone who has a deep appreciation of Barthes, and it shows. This is what most impressed me. Clearly, this text reflects the intentions of the series in its attempt to bring a difficult subject down to earth. If you want to get a foothold into Barthes, this is an excellent place to begin.

1-0 out of 5 stars A total disgrace to literary theory and criticism
This book is an extremely superficial review of Barthes' theories. The illustrations are disgusting and totally not appropriate for this book. Roland Barthes was one of the greatest mid-20th century critics and philosophers and this is not the type of book he deserves. Whoever is interested in Roland Barthes is definitely not looking for this type of book. It is a total disgrace to his books and his persona. ... Read more

Editorial Review

Easily the most engaging writer of Western intellectual history in the English language, Will Durant breathes life into philosophers and their ideas. He is colorful, witty, and above all, informative. Beginning with Socrates and ending with American philosopher John Dewey, Durant summarizes the lives and influence of philosophy's greatest thinkers, painting them with humanity and adding a few of his own wise platitudes. Seventy-some years after its first printing, Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars still the best
Even though they are long gone, Will and Arial Durant still Rock.I have been in love with philosophy for twenty years now and this is still my favorite.Truth doesn't change with time.

4-0 out of 5 stars Hail Philosophy
I enojoyed The Story of Philosophy.Durant did a nice job at explaining the various views of the philosophers and gave some interesting background information about each.I could see how their philosophies were related to their circumstances. It was nice that Durant gave a few criticisms at the end of each section.Durant does leave out many philosophers and sometimes whole periods. The main absentees were Augustine, Aquinas, Descartes, Locke, Hume, Marx, and Mill to name a few, but I don't think it takes away from the book. All who don't write many volumes have to make choices. It was written in the 1920's and so a lot of philosophers have came after or grew in importance who are not found here. You won't read about Kierkegaard, Heidegger, and Sartre. You won't get Wittegenstein, the analytic philosophers, or men like Derrida or Foucault, but it's nice to see the importance and explanations a historian of philosophy gives to certain philosophers.Durant started off with the timeless Plato and his down to earth successor Aristotle. Some interesting choices which I have yet to see as a main focal points in other books of this category were Francis Bacon and Voltaire.I gained a new appreciation for Voltaire. I though Durant gave very good simple explanation of the complex philosophy of Kant and an excellent job of explaining Schopenhauer's depressing philosophy, which I can definitely relate to. You really get a taste of Nietzsche's astounding insanity. Wow, just wow.I say he surely was the Prophet of Satan and some of his prophecies have came true...After Nietzsche, Durant gives less time to each philospher, but you still get a taste of each's views. It was quite interesting how after Darwin, the idea of evolution permeated the views people formulated on every area of study and the creative way Bergson used it in his philosophy.I must say science has always has an impact on philosophy.

5-0 out of 5 stars another great overview
This book is a classic as far as introductory philosophy books go. The reason is it covers many of the important philosophers of history in a clear and efficient way.

4-0 out of 5 stars Unbelievable but thought provoking
Unbelievable I say not as a skeptic, but as a true rational person. This same skepticism opens up other horizons in one's thinking - is this all true? Yogi Paramahamsa, the author, renders in this charming and lucid storytelling, facts he came across in his life - like his Master being able to 'know' that they will have guests arriving in the middle of the night; another yogi predicting the author's arrival and telling him of what he did miles away and many more such incidents.
2-0 out of 5 stars A fantasy book not a spiritual guide
This book is full of stories, or perhaps lies might be a better word, because nowhere is it indicated that the stories are not the truth.
5-0 out of 5 stars Best book for possibilities of Self Awareness and Spiritual insight
A great introduction to saints, saintly lifestyle, Yogic siddhis, miracles, Krishna Consciousness, etc is easily found in the engaging book of Sri Paramahansa Yogananda - Autobiography of a Yogi . It has given inspiration to do spiritual labour to me whenever I glance at its devotional pages.

5-0 out of 5 stars Living in Accordance with Belief
Simone Weil and her brother Andre were prodigies.Andre had learned advanced math, Sanskrit, Greek, and how to play the violin by age 12.In the first decades of the twentieth cenury there was developed a myth of the happy Weil family.Selma Weil, a forceful woman, made the decisions about the children's education.Simone had severe eating problems as an adolescent.(Selma was nearly phobic about contagion.)
4-0 out of 5 stars Swift, Gripping, Living Room-Style Book Chat
The most memorable and the most compelling thread in Gray's narrative for me is the new focus on Weil's relationship with her parents: they made great sacrifices to ensure that Simone was safe, living well, or at living decently, throughout her many willfull and ruinous physcial and spiritual experiences. Weil's mother followed her from town to town as she took on different teaching posts or factory jobs, making sure her living quarters were at least semi-satisfactory and slipping money to local food merchants so they would give her more than she would normally buy for herself. These accounts are gut wrenching in their way. Gray suggests the intensity of the relationship between parents and child through these kinds of accounts, their strenuous attempts to simply keep their child alive, but the deeper psychological attachments and tussels remain a mystery. Gray says that it was Simone who safely saw her parents to New York in the early 1940s, in escape of the war, but perhaps it was the other way around. I wonder if, when Simone then swiftly decided to return to Europe to plunge herself head first into the annilation of war her parents realized she was essentially committing suicide? How could they have let her go? And yet, how could they have made her stay? Gray doesn't say. All biographers bring something of themselves to their subjects and it was only after Gray's biography of her own parents, entitled Them, recently came out that I understood why her focus on Weil's parents was so loaded with poignancy and meaning.

5-0 out of 5 stars an excellent biography of a flawed philosopher
Francine Du Plessix Gray has done a phenomenal job in distilling the life and and thoughts of Simone Weil. Most importantly, while illuminating the experiences, insights, and influences of the noted French philosopher, Du Plessix Gray has not shied away from Weil's darker sides, including her virulent Jewish self-hatred. It is sad that such a deep thinker could be so blind to the suffering of her fellow Jews when they faced the greatest catastrophe in their history. This is a book to be read not only for those who wish to understand modern French thought, but also for those who need to understand the limits of the intellect as well. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars A excellent commentary on a true classic of history
Now in it's second edition featuring a new Introduction and additional Bibliography, Josephus: The Historian And His Societyis a excellent commentary on a true classic of history by Tessa Rajak (Reader in Classics at the University of Reading). A Jerusalem upperclass priest and Pharisee, and a controversial Jewish general in the great and doomed revolt against their Roman occupiers by the Jewish populace in 66-73 CE, Josephus was the author of two ancient history texts: "Jewish Wars" and "Jewish Antiquities" which became seminal works of importance to both Jewish and Greco-Roman history. These works were combined under one cover and became known to academia as an indispensable reference resource for scholars and non-specialist general readers with an interest in ancient history. Well versed in both Greek and Hebrew, Tessa Rajak is particularly positioned to assess diverse source materials and provide contemporary readers with a sociological account of the Jewish revolt and its cultural context, as well as the role of Josephus himself in the events in which he participated and/or personally observed, as well as his chronicled accounts of Jewish and Roman personalities and politics.

3-0 out of 5 stars Historical raisons dêtre of Descartes intellectual pursuit
Gaukroger ends his introduction with the words: "An intellectual biography forces one to think in very specific terms, hopefully yielding a kind of understanding which historians of philosophy of science have missed". This point of view marks one of the strengths as well as one of the weaknesses of this work on Descartes. 5-0 out of 5 stars Great exposition of Descartes
Anyone interested in the ideas of Rene Descartes would be mad to miss this book. As the title suggests, emphasis is placed on the development of his ideas, placing them in context and giving a clear exposition of the concepts involved, with only as much personal background as is interesting and necessary to this end. Gaukroger is justly regarded as one of the world's leading Descartes scholars. And I'm sure he is very kind to dogs.

3-0 out of 5 stars Well written book; have remarks though.
It was Descartes whose analysis that dogs don't have feelings led to the justification of all manner of cruelty towards animals. For anyone planning to read this book, also expand your horizons and read "The Intelligence of Dogs" by Stanley Coren, psychologist and dog trainer ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A Spell-Binding Biography of a Most Remarkable Man
This story of Krishanurti's life is the most fascinating and complete biography I have ever read.It certainly helps that the book begins with intriguing accounts of Krishnamurti's unusual childhood, in which he was "found" by the Theosophical Society.... "Leadbetter suddenly noticed one of the boys, outwardly a rather skinny looking little boy with a shaved front to his head and a pigtail. He was about thirteen (actually fourteen but appeared much younger), and had a little brother with him.He saw that around this boy was an aura of such brightness and glory as he said no one else in Adyar had, and that was so outstanding to him that he at once made friends with the two brothers."5-0 out of 5 stars The man was his teaching
I first came across this book in a library and borrowed it, and the impression I got, sustained for 3 years to make me actually buy it. As Krishnaji would say, the only way of understanding and discovering your self is through the mirror of relationship, what better way of understanding Krishnaji than through the way he interacted with people from different parts of the world and with different perspectives? That said, Krishnaji still remains a mystery as he rightly should, but nevertheless a delightful mystery.....

5-0 out of 5 stars Absolutely enlightening
Krishnamurti, although interesting and intriguing, is not known for his entertainment value. He was as austere and uncompromising as he was fascinating. This book is entertaining, and interesting, and intriguing, and fascinating. It is my educated guess that Krishnamurti's teachings willbecome more well known in the years to come. Much more well known. Thisbook is an excellent introduction to his teaching as well as a supplementto his actual wealth of books. What other book offers an invitation to whatit means to being really aware and seeing truth, and also shares anecdotesof the like of which Krishnamuti is on a picnic with Charlie Chaplin,Paulette Goddard, and Aldous Huxley, to name a few. This book is awonderful gem, full of insight. Absolutely enlightening. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars A work of real meaning, despite,..
I could not quite make out how to perceive this book. On the one hand it is a testament of a lifelong friendship and love. On the other hand it seems to me it is an indictment of the beloved when they are no longer around to answer. And here the indictment comes not necessarily out of a desire to injure, but simply through stating the facts about certain aspects of Sartre's life. His capacity for multiple loyalty was very great especially when this had to do with young women. And according to other sources de Beauvoir's role in these relationships was not necessarily a very good one.
5-0 out of 5 stars Never thought that Sartre could make you cry?
Then you need to read this book.It is Simone de Beauvoir's first-person account of the last ten years of Sartre's life, and it is heartbreaking to read in several places. Her descriptions in particular of his final few days are wrenching, and I did actually cry as she described Sartre's death. The prose is characteristic of de Beauvoir: deeply and intimately detailed, meticulous, and dense in some places. But the reading is ultimately rewarding as it gives the reader an even more thorough understanding of the devoted side of de Beauvoir--and the very human and mortal side of the great philosopher Sartre.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Beaver's Tale
Simone de Beauvoir and Jean-Paul Sartre were *the* couple of the 20th century. For all the immense history they created, it may be beyond our ability to imagine just how and why they were first drawn together, or more why they *stayed* together right up until Sartre's death in 1980.This two-part memoir is remarkable for its poignant intimacy, first as an historical record from 1970-1980, and then as a transcription of de Beauvoir's own interviews with Sartre during that same period of time. These two were a rough mix, as though that was a revelation. And, ironically, it's perhaps de Beauvior's own deep emotional commitment that comes through most clearly in these pages. On the other hand, we're also offered a fascinating view of their long public life together. From the times of divided German-occupied France, to the political activism of the 60s and beyond...and, above all, the writings they produced! If anything, this book reveals how moot is the point of Sartre's caustic personality, and to what extent he may have "used" her.(As if a woman of this caliber *could* be used!)Their focus was always on the change they hoped to produce in the world.Well, and for de Beauvoir, at least, there was also the issue of their own personal relationship.Therein lies the charm of this book. You won't be disappointed. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars what a great diary
Well it isn't really a diary. It's more like reading his philosophy, but more intimate.Even though I like his philosophy, I preferred this the most.In this, he doesn't make subtle hints about his father and Regine. He completely bares his relationship with themand it's rather heartbreaking.Also4-0 out of 5 stars A Smattering of SK's Voluminous Journal Entries

4-0 out of 5 stars Good Rekindling of Philosophical Interest & Enjoyment
The names Kant, Popper, Russell and Schopenhauer don't exactly rock my world. I have, in fact, mentally decided unless I register for a B.Phil, no way I'm gonna read any of their original works. So when, not halfway into this book I find myself thirsting for books like The Open Society & Its Enemies (Popper's masterpiece) and The Critique of Pure Reason (Kant's), I know I've been hooked.
