5-0 out of 5 stars Woes of a wobbly-one.
I recently gave away my copy of this marvelous book to my son. It wasn't too long before I went into withdrawal and bought myself another copy. Bob Mason is a truly honest man, which is not to say that he never lied, cheated, or stole, but that he is one of those rare individuals who can look at himself in the mirror and see himself as he really is, warts and all. That takes an admirable form of courage that most of us don't have. I couldn't do a memoir the way he did. I had to resort to an alter-ego in my own book. I won't claim more warts than Bob, but the ones I have I don't like.
1-0 out of 5 stars Garbage
What a waste of time, and money. I tossed it the trashcan where it belongs.

5-0 out of 5 stars The best read ever
This is by far the best book about Vietnam ever written.I really enjoy his sense of humor coupled with his cynicism.Being in the military myself, I found this right at home.

1-0 out of 5 stars There is no such thing as an accidental soldier
I was a reservist that was called up to active duty to serve in afghanistan. The author pretty much uses most of the book to complain about being deployed. If he joined the military for the college money never wanting to get deployed, then he was wrong for that. Everyone joins the military knowing that they may be called up to serve in a war. He shows what the war was like, but for the most part makes the reservist and national guardsman look bad by complaining about how he was deployed just shortly before graduating college... that's the risk we run as soldiers... there is no accident about that.

1-0 out of 5 stars A lesson in entitlement mentality that plagues our society
Even the title contradicts itself, proclaiming it to be a true story while also declaring him to be an "accidental" soldier.Had Crawford been under the impression he was joining the U.S. Rowing Team rather than the NATIONAL GUARD, perhaps he would be just in his incessant complaining.Instead, he sounds like that guy everyone of us who have served in the military knew, constantly unsatisfied, except in his dissatisfaction.
5-0 out of 5 stars Unbelievably Raw. Great Book
Given that Crawfords account of the Iraq war is the first true account Ive read, I am taken aback. I assumed the worst in Iraq....violence, corruption, poverty, disgust; I just didnt realize how accurate my imagination was to the real thing. John Crawford depicts a putrid image of a real life human hellhole. Carcass, feces, dirt, and heat overwhelms the setting; a meaningless war takes over the theme. This is truly a novel set to prove to the world that the war in Iraq is not what our government portrays it to be. Iraq is not an epic battle of heroism, rather, Iraq seems to be a war of countless tradgeies. John Crawford illustrates that his time there was as pointless and life-changing as our initial search for WMDs, and proves beyond a doubt that war in itself creates overwhelming evil. Read this book, I've recommended it to everyone I know. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Honor Indeed!
Scott O'Grady truly did return with Honor after a very difficult experience. On a routine mission, his F-16 was shot down over Bosnia. He gave great detail about his preparation for such an event and exactly what happened. He survived because of the training that he had previously received and the grace of God. He gives credit where credit is due throughout the story. You will enjoy reading the details of a true American hero's difficult few days. As an American, I am proud to know that we have men like Scott O'Grady on our side.

4-0 out of 5 stars The rescue of Basher Five Two.
As some of the other reviewers have already related, I thought I would not like this book, but I did.Scott O'Grady is an inspiration. Not only did he survive a SAM-6 shoot down, but he become more focused in his life and belief in God.During his evasion of Serb para military forces, he focused his energies on surviving another day despite food and water.

5-0 out of 5 stars Dedicated Statesman to his times!
Since becoming interested in the 19th Century, and the oasis of information concerning that time period, I'm still baffled as to why the 21st Century historian cannot understand the greatness of men like Jefferson Davis. All the modern historian can do is point out cultural problems of times past (slavery: as if the South was the only place on earth that had them). After reading the standard review from Amazon, I had to chime in on this great book.I've read William J. Cooper's Jefferson Davis as well asJefferson Davis himself. Is it not interesting that modern day Jefferson Davis antagonists' (Just read James Mcpherson's preface in 'The Rise and Fall of the Confederate Government") can only talk of slavery, as if this is the only motivating factor which drove J. Davis to become a relunctant secessionist, while ignoring our own cultural problems that are far worse and grandiose in scope.Modern day/ post-modern historians cannot grasp the larger picture of history.Their worldview does not allow for such truth gazing.F. Allen does a supurb job of showing us a Davis who was triumphant, depressed, ultimately defeated, caring for Negros, and a dedicated Episcopalian who knew who his Saviour was. Many of J. Davis' associates supported gradual emancipation (Bishop Meade of Va and Bishop Leonidas Polk) as to help assimulate the Negro into society. The Northern invasion of the South precluded any such cultural assimilation to take place.Read this book- It is partisan, but isn't every historian coming to work the task of history with his/her presuppositions?F. Allen is not ashamed of this and her logical conclusions about the man and his times is as accurate as a historian can get.Cheers for independent scholars who have not abdicated the task of passing story to fellow countrymen!

5-0 out of 5 stars A True American
What Mrs. Allen succeeds so brilliantly at is showing the human side of the man. I must admit that I was no fan of Jefferson Davis in his role as the President of the CSA. However, thanks to Mrs. Allen, I was able to see him in a much different light - as an American patriot and a human being. In the passions that colour anything dealing with the War of Northern Aggression, it is sometimes difficult to remember that everyone involved had a life before that tragic conflict. I can't help but be grateful for the way in which Mrs. Allen brought that point home in her book. While I will still take issue with many of his wartime decisions, I can't help but be proud that our nation produced a man like Jefferson Davis. Thanks for the insight and the education Mrs. Allen!

4-0 out of 5 stars good biography of a good man
This is a good book to read for anyone wanting to see how a good man dealt with adversity.Allen places much emphasis upon Davis' Christian faith, and how it helped him to be the sort of man who can be worthily imitated. The book also contains a goodly amount of historical information which is not commonly known. It could have used some tighter editing, as there were a few points where I was not quite sure about whom Allen was writing, and had to go back and re-read the paragraph, but, all in all, I was both informed and edified by this book.About the review by Kirkus, I can only conclude that that reviewer is an anti-Christian, anti-Southern bigot, as he obviously had already decided about the book before reading it. ... Editorial Review

Long before he entered politics, when he was just in his early 20s,South Dakotan George McGovern flew 35 bomber missions over Nazi-occupied Europe, earning a Distinguished Flying Cross for bravery under fire. Stephen Ambrose, the industrious historian, focuses on McGovern and the young crew of his B-24bomber, volunteers all, in this vivid study of the air war in Europe.Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars A SOLID READ - IF NOT THE AUTHOR'S BEST
While I enjoyed this one, it certainly was not the author's best work.It did draw attention to a group of very brave men, the B-24 crew members in the European Theater, which was good as this group and this plane is often overlooked. It did seem to me though that the author, on one side was trying to write a biography of George McGovern, or if he was trying to cover the air war during the last part of WWII.I did enjoy his trade mark technique of telling the stories of different men who participated, but he would always go back to McGovern.Perhaps if he had stuck to one or the other the book would have had more of an impact.Parts of this work did drag and were rather repetative. On the other hand, the author did not try to over dramatize McGovern's part in the war.The work was well crafted and you certainy would not waste your time in reading it.I suppose it is not quite fare to compare this work with other works by this author. After all, no one bats a thousand all the time.Overall, recommend this one with reservations. It is about very brave young men and we do need to know as much about them as possible.

5-0 out of 5 stars Almost to dramatic to be believed
The only other Ambrose book I've read was "Band of brothers" so I really can't compare it to his other works. But I had to comment after reading the negative reviews. They must have skipped around a lot. This book was so exciting and dramatic it was almost unbelievable. McGovern shows himself to be an exceptional pilot and a true hero. The book is full of unforgetable moments and breath-taking action. After reading it I immediatly started looking up more information on line. I consider it a must read.

2-0 out of 5 stars Mr. Mc Govern's book.
I have read better books by Stephen Ambrose(or his team of writers...). This one is dull, tiringsome, centered in one person. Ok the guy was supposed to be charismatic in spite of not wining a presidential election long ago forgotten.

5-0 out of 5 stars Rommel - the origin of 'JUST DO IT'
I imagine a good business lecturer would translate lessons from this book into 'Rommel on Business'.However, for me, it will suffice to say that Rommel writes an exciting account of the terrible and sometimes gruesomeconditions of war in World War One.His clear examples of 'leadership byexample', and 'be a bold risk taker' would seem self-confidence overblown, were it not for the historical reality of his successes in the battlesnamed. There is also an element here and there of the blind nationalismthat would lead him and many of his fellow officers into the follow-onfiasco a mere 20+ years later.A 'must read' for modern militaryhistorians and Rommel fans.

5-0 out of 5 stars The foundation of a brilliant General
Rommel lays out his own tactiacal ideas and concepts as he creates them in combat in WWI.Rommel shows the benefits of surprise, speed and how to take massive numbers of prisoners without firing a shot.Rommel lays the foundation which will make him the most famous general of the 20th century

4-0 out of 5 stars Successful offensive? You need SPEED and VIOLENCE.
This book, written while Rommel was a lieutenant colonel in the German War College, is a recounting of his days as a young soldier during WWI.The secret of his success:As simply stated by the future Field Marshal, "Any offensive should combine much speed and violence." A nitty-gritty book which really captures of the essence of Rommel in his own words.A must read for military historians and Desert Fox buffs ... Read more

Claude Thomas' inspiring account of his hellish journey and his eventual path to personal growth is one of the most profound stories I've read. Editorial Review

The lives of Ulysses S. Grant and William T. Sherman are classic underdog stories. Both of these "obscure failures" experienced more disappointment than success prior to the start of the Civil War. By 1861, they had each resigned from the U.S. Army and failed in several civilian pursuits between them, including farming, real estate, retail, and banking. Further, Grant was known as a drunk and Sherman was labeled insane. But once they threw themselves into the war effort, their best traits and talents began to reveal themselves. Even their motives were similar--both men joined the war not to eradicate slavery but to hold the Union together, believing that secession was equal to treason. This dual biography gracefully reveals how the two men grew to be "as brothers," why their partnership proved essential to victory for the Union, and how well they complemented and helped each other in their lives and careers, despite some major differences. For instance, though he possessed tremendous talent, Sherman was insecure and initially asked Abraham Lincoln never to give him a superior command. Grant, on the other hand, never doubted his ability to lead, and he quickly, if quietly, moved up the chain of command. Once he recognized Sherman's abilities, Grant made sure to keep him close, and they grew to depend upon each other completely. Through their near-daily interaction, even when separated by distance, both men honed their skills and eventually came up with a winning strategy for the war, which they executed in a brilliant two-pronged assault. 4-0 out of 5 stars Interesting but not completely satisfying
As other reviews note, this book is marred by some errors (e.g., it was not Grant who abrogated Kentucky's neutrality; most works I have read credit The Bishop General, Polk, with that accomplishment). It also promises more in the subtitle than it can deliver ("The Friendship That Won the Civil War").I just don't see the case made that their friendship led to victory. It was hardly irrelevant, of course, but the subtitle's claim sets a high standard to meet.
5-0 out of 5 stars Good friends
I own about twenty audio books on the Civil War and countless books and periodicals. I have already listened to this one twice and will probably listen a third time next week. Very enjoyable, very interesting, never boring. Thanks to the author, I'll be looking for more of his works.

3-0 out of 5 stars A good profile of the friendship between two great men
The strength of this book is that the narrative is very compelling and easy to read. This book is well-written and very enjoyable, and examines a very important, though sometimes underestimated, relationship between the two men who arguably did more to win the Civil War than anyone else. The friendship between Grant and Sherman has always been very interesting to me, having a great admiration for Sherman and a great deal of respect for Grant as well. The thing that most impresses me about these men is their unfailing loyalty to each other and seeming lack of selfish ambition, and Flood does a great job of profiling this.

Editorial Review

It's about time somebody wrote a biography of Winfield Scott, and reading this fascinatingaccount by accomplished military historian John S. D. Eisenhower, you'll wonder why nobody did itsooner. Scott's career spanned an astonishing 54 years and he spent most of it as a general. He was one ofthe few American heroes to emerge from the War of 1812; he launched a daring and successful invasion ofMexico in 1847; and he defended a vulnerable Washington, D.C., during the first months of the Lincolnadministration in 1861. Scott was a profoundly courageous man with a flair for the organizational side ofmilitary life. Yet an unseemly amount of ambition and vanity marred his character, even as these qualitieshelp make him an interesting subject for Eisenhower (who is, you guessed it, the son of Ike). Read more

I must say that Eisenhower's biography of "Old Fuss and Feathers" was truely incredible. I absolutely loved this biography so much that I read it in about 2 days. Eisenhower researched Scott very well and did a great job portraying this great American Hero. At the end of the book you really feel like you know Winfield Scott personally and you feel sorry for the fact that old age finally overtook him when his country needed him most.
5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Introductory Bio about General Scott
This is an excellent introduction to one of the United State's greatest military leaders. It is not an exhaustive account but it never claims to be one. I think this book is perfect for the military history buff who wants to find out who Scott was and what his accomplishments were. The book is less than 500 pages long so Eisenhower's treatment of Scott's over 50 years of Military service is concise. However, it highlights many (if not all) of Scott's successes and failures during his tenure. The book has whetted my appetite to find out more about this illustrous man.Read Eisenhower's book on the Mexican War, "So far from God" for a more in-depth examination of General Scott's masterful campaign to capture Mexico City and force the Mexican government to capitulate to the U.S.

"Old Fuss and Feathers", Winfield Scott, is one of the most important soldiers in American history. He was breveted a Brigadier General during the War of 1812, his shadow passes across all of the American Army's actions during the first half of the 19th Century, and before retiring he came up with "The Anaconda Plan" as a strategy to win the Civil War.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars History written by a eyewitness
This really is a first-rate account of a process that has largely been ignored by writers and historians.I think it's a "given" that diving around sunken, fully armed and fueled battleships would be dangerous, but until I read this book I didn't realize just how MANY different hazards there were. For example, who would have known that it's dangerous to enter a previously-sealed but empty compartment that contains rust? (the formation of iron oxide [rust] depletes oxygen in the space)Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars The Nearly Impossible Job
The Secretary of Defense is in some ways the second most imporant man in Washington. The budget he overseas is $419 billion for the current year. His department is bigger than any other single department. He manages more people than all the rest of the Government agencies put together. Trying to manage all of this may be more than any one man can handle. He's got to please the President more than anyone else, but then there's Congress, the senior military officials, and other members of the cabinet, particularly the Secretary of State.

5-0 out of 5 stars Riveting
Johnson's propensity for detail is amazing. From the very first page I felt I was inside of a Huey helicopter at the controls. It was downhill from there. The action was so heart pounding and detailed, I could hardly put the book down.I even carried it in my truck so I could read while stopped at red lights. In between the action, the times at the various LZs were very entertaining and enlightening.Johnson really brought the other soldiers to life so that you felt you knew each man on a personal basis. The flashbacks to the time when he was in training was critical in relating how he reacted to his current situation.I highly recommend this book to all ages.

5-0 out of 5 stars Heroes
In Tom Johnson's TO THE LIMIT I have found the true heroes of my generation. In this book, Tom Johnson so vividly gives clarity to the men and women who fought and gave their lives in Vietnam. We can never show our true gratitude for what these people sacrificed for their country. What makes TO THE LIMIT so unique and different from all the many books I have read is that Tom Johnson writes this book from his heart. To write from your heart you must be in touch with your soul. He is a remarkable human being who allows his readers to empathize and share the reality and horrors that the men and women of the Vietnam War lived. Begin reading TO THE LIMIT and you will have a hard time laying it down until it is completed.

4-0 out of 5 stars Extremely detailed account
This book is an extremely detailed account of movements, units, personnel, and the commanders who played a role. I believe the book was lacking in the human perspective of the men who fought the war. More of a dry report at times.Nonetheless, it was a good read through the eyes of a man who fought on the German side during W.W.II. Heinz Guderian was a General in the Panzer Corps and led one of the Army Groups. He later became Inspector General of Armored Troops and then finally Chief of the General Staff. He was one of the greatest tacticians and leaders of the German military. Much like Patton, but more settled.

5-0 out of 5 stars World War II from the German side
This is a fascinating book from a general who can rightly be called the father of modern armoured warfare. Heinz Guderian was central to the development of Germany's mobile forces and was at the spearhead of the early Blitzkrieg campaigns. After being relieved of command in December 1941, he was recalled in 1943 to become Inspector General of Armoured Troops, with responsibility for re-organising and re-equipping the Panzer forces, and the following year was appointed Chief of the General Staff, a post he held until March 1945.

5-0 out of 5 stars Inspiring
I read this story years ago and remember being inspired by the courage of this young man.One reviewer stated that his plane was shot down, I thought that the bombs he was dropping detonated prematurely and caused the crash.Regardless, it's a great story about a guy who never gave up.

3-0 out of 5 stars Conflicted:
While I am inclined to agree with the title of a previous review "great story, terrible book", I would not go so far as to say it was a "terrible" book. However, for some reason (I am just a reader) McConnells writing did not pull me in and hold me.
5-0 out of 5 stars Into the Mouth of the Cat
I just re-read Into the Mouth of the Cat by the military historian, Malcolm McConnell. It is an undisputed classic--undisputed execpt for that jerk Amazon reviewer from Ft. Campbell, KY who stated, erroneously, in 2001 that Mcconnell "never served."He served as an Army enlistedman in 1957-58, but more importantly, he served as a civilian intelligence officer in the Congo in the 1960s and in Vietnam.I know because I was there with him.Unlike Ft. Campbell, McConnell knows what combat is. His book shows this. ... Read more
