5-0 out of 5 stars Hill 488 Tells it like it was
As a Marine I spent two tours in the Nam.My first trip over was in 1966 and my first assignment was Chu Lai. I was there when this took place. The author has done a fantastic job of researching the background and recreating the events of what took place. This story takes you there and places you in the middle of the action. It is a must read for any Veteren or anyone else who just want's to know what it was like to be in the Nam'

5-0 out of 5 stars One of best war books ever
I wish every American would read this book.I wish an honorable person in Hollywood like Mel Gibosn would make a movie of it since he kept "We Were Soldiers" true to the real events. This is an awsome book and tells the honor and courage many Viet Nam vets had that the media and particularly Hollywood never wanted to tell about, insteat churning our negatives and lies.I am not a hero but did serve in VN in same area but with US Army Ammo Supply.

4-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Information and Great Retelling
I liked how there was a lot of background information given before the action started. It helped keep the reader in the perspective of the Marines. It did mean that readers, who aren't inclined to know anything about the actual Marines involved, had to wade through a bunch of detail. However, that detail is what made the book good. The authors retold the story of that night very well.

5-0 out of 5 stars War is Hell, but it's also awfully bureaucratic
Company Aytch may not be unique in the annals of war books, but it is certainly unusual. Plenty of soldiers have kept journals of their war days, and plenty of historians have quilted together pretty vivid accounts of various wars from such journals. I haven't read Thucydides multi-volume account of the Peloponnesian war, but based on excerpts his works come to mind, perhaps because like Company Aytch it was also written during a horrible civil war. Thucydides was a general, though, and Watkins was a foot soldier, and thus he gives us the terror, tedium, and even humor of war through the eyes of everyman. The sheer horror of "The Elephant" as the southerners called the battle, comes through even though the unblinking eye of the veteran of many campaigns has grown used to it. My uncle once told me you could get used to hanging if you did it long enough, and I suppose that happened a bit to these battle-hardened men, but still the process is fascinating, and for good or ill, we are also spared vivid descriptions of the worst of the horrors, even though at Franklin and other places he encountered them aplenty.
5-0 out of 5 stars Indespensible for the re-enactor
I was introduced to this masterpiece a few years back when I was a novice to re-enacting and I wanted to know more about the soldier's experience. It is a true treasure-trove of information regarding the frontline experiences of a Confederate soldier.
4-0 out of 5 stars Great insight to a Private Soldier's Civil War
This is a first-hand account of Civil War life and battles as exprienced by a private in the C.S.A. Army, Sam Watkins.Watkins explains throughout that he is NOT a historian nor should his writings ever be considered history. But, if you want to know what went on in the minds of those young men, then this is a must read.I bought this one after browsing through a friend's book, Company Aytch by Sam Watkins, and I recommend this one as it does contain additional writings (sketches) by Watkins as well as a glossary of definitions, which I found necessary.Thomas Ingle does not edit nor rewite Watkin's writings but simply includes additional material. Also, this edition has been fixed of all previous typos. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Outstanding and riveting memoir
We reviewed this title in hardcover and gave it special recommendation for its gutsy, blunt tone and insights into the modern world of the army and the female experience in combat: in paperback now, LOVE MY RIFLE MORE THAN YOU: YOUNG AND FEMALE IN THE US ARMY will reach an even wider audience with its outstanding and riveting memoir.
4-0 out of 5 stars Great Book
Really gives good insight to what it is like being female in the Army.Been there, totally related to the book.Very good book!Every male in the military should have to read this book!

3-0 out of 5 stars It could have been better!
Kayla Williams and Michael E Staub put together a raw and intense book. Kayla was an Arabic Linguist with the Army's 311th Military Intelligence Battalion attached to the 101st Airborne Division. She deployed February 2003 for the initial push into Iraq and remained there until February 2004.

5-0 out of 5 stars True Hero
CPT Dave Rozelle is a true hero and American Patriot. This amazing true story is a must read for any of the War on Terrorism's many critics.Whereas many in our great country sit back and point fingers at those making decisions and fighting overseas, CPT Rozelle is actually doing his part. It's easy to sit on the sidelines, but Dave has fought, been severely wounded, and fought again. He now commands amputees at Walter Reed, getting them in shape to fight again. You can't help but feel even greater respect for our men and women in uniform after reading this one.CPT Rozelle and his men are true Americans, and need to be acknowledged by reading this book.

3-0 out of 5 stars Interesting
This book was tough for me.As a military wife I was drawn to Capt. Rozelle's story. However, his book didn't live up to my expectations.Don't get me wrong, Capt. Rozelle is to be commended for all that he has accomplished and all that he is still accomplishing. The problem, for me, was that in his attempt to show the military in such a great light he came off as somewhat unrelatable.During the first part of the book, he seemed unable to show any sort of failure or flaw.It wasn't until after his injury that he let the reader see his humanity. He finally told stories of how he let himself down and how he eventually picked himself up and went forward. My only gripe is that he failed to show this same side of himself in the earlier portions of the book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Don't believe the lack of hype
If you believe that troop-morale is low this book should change your mind. I've heard Capt. Rozelle on Laura Ingraham's show telling his story and each time I hear him I'm more confident, proud and optimistic about what we're doing in Iraq. Rozelle provides great insight on what's really going on and is highly critical of the poor press coverage of the War in Iraq. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Bayerlein:From Afrikakorps to Panzer Lehr
Outstanding work went into this book.Very easy to read, great of publisher to make room for many pictures, instead of the obligatory 12-16 most have in the center of the book. The author dug well and deep to aquire pictures and many personal facts one ordinarily would not find. Most readers of the African and Normandy campigns discover Fritz Bayerlein as a footnote for someone else's exploits extroidinaire. This book illustrates the degree that General Bayerlein enhanced the careers of such luminaries as Rommel and Guderian, as well as being a field commander in his own right.Major props to P.A. Spayd, keep us posted for the next work of this author.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Work on a German General's Life
Ms. Spayd has done a tremendous job of putting together the life of one of Germany's most accomplished generals. If a person is wanting to see a micro-study on the life and times of a German commander during WWII, then this book has much to offer. And last, anyone who is interested in the Afrika Korps must have this book since it closely looks at Rommel's command and warfare in Africa.Ms. Spayd has significantly contributed to the body of knowledge on the operational level of warfare during World War II and she has done so by putting a human face on it.

5-0 out of 5 stars An excellent viewof one of Rommel's principal generals.
This book gives an in depth look at an important German general we have heard little about. General Bayerlein was a key participant in the North African, Russian and European campaigns. Of special interest to me was his role as commander of the Panzer Lehr Division during the Normandy invasion. His personal views of the orders he received to advance to the front in daylight while being attacked by Allied aircraft was especially interesting. A German officer who served in all of the major Euopean theaters of WWII and survived had to be someone special. The author, through her use of Bayerlein's own words and unpublished photographs gives a unique view of the man and the soldier. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Understanding those who serve.
Letters from the Front Lines is a compilation of war letters, e-mails, and blogs from soldiers, sailors, marines, and even one civilian mom. Although there are other letter-type books, this one is valuable because each chapter is comprised of one person's letters, e-mails, or blogs from one person's perspective of the war and the events that play out in a combat zone. The book is neither pro nor anti-war; it's simply what it is.

5-0 out of 5 stars Deeply moving
I read this book when it was first published about ten years ago and the moving experience has remained with me since I finished the final sentence. It is an incredibly vivid book that you will not be able to put down.
5-0 out of 5 stars Exceptional true story of survival and ulitmate forgiveness
An unforgettable story of endurance, cruelty and forgiveness. This is a story that stays with the reader, even years later. This is a true story of Mr. Lomax's experience during WWII. He was captured and tortured and almost died. At one time the only thing that kept him alive was practically throwing himself down a flight of stairs so he was transferred to hospital from the dreaded prison. After the War, Mr. Lomax, like many other Veterans was unable to lead a normal life with emotions. Having experienced dreadful torture at the hands of the Japanese he learnt to cut himself off from his feelings, in order to survive. All his life he never forgot the interrupter that was present during his torture, he dreamed of revenge someday. In a miraculous turn of events he mets up with this man, whom it turns out was unable to forget being part of the torture of Mr. Lomax, and it had haunted him all his life. The two men agree to meet, and the most remarkable thing happens they become friends, forgiveness and understanding occurs. This is one of the best books I have read about the POW experience during WWII, it is tragic, and yet has rewarding and true ending.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Special Book
This is a book that will move you.Eric Lomax is a man of depth, intelligence and keen perception. His writing is vivid, his story one that you can't put down.I strongly urge anyone interested in what the POW experience is like, and anyone interested in a powerful story, to buy and read this book. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Fascinating and Insightful
"The Generalship of Alexander the Great" is a fascinating book on Alexander the Great's life, political leadership and generalship. It was written by Fuller, a retired British General who is a world renowned military historian.
2-0 out of 5 stars Informative but hard to read
This book was the first text I ever read about Alexander and was a little bit disappointing. The information is all there (somewhere) but it is not presented in an interesting manner. I was given the book at Christmas and did not finish it yet (May, 02). More than often, the author describes the various conflicting sources of information but does not gives his opinion about which one is the most likely. This happens very frequently with the number of soldier involved in the battles he describes. The book is also rather poor in maps and figures and the text very often mentions places and roads without referring the reader to the existing maps. Some times you read through 2 or 3 pages without fully understanding the description just to find out that the map was there, some pages ahead. Finally, there is no detailed description of the battle units and armaments used at Alexander's times, leading the non-specialist reader to confusion.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent View of Alexander
There are many biographies of Alexander the Great out there. Most tend to look at his influence on the the times he lived in, as well as his legacy to the world. There are many ways to view the Macedonian juggernault. Here we have a unique perspective by a reknowned military historian.JFC Fuller takes Alexander's career and provides a first-rate look and analysis. The book is divided into two roughly equal parts. The first section provides a fast moving mini-bio of his life, emphisizing the major battles and campaigns of Alexander. The depth here is lacking, and purposely so, as this information is only provided in order to follow the discussion of his generalship.

5-0 out of 5 stars This book was excellent, I couldn't put it down.
As for the other half negative reviews, like it being for a young reader, don't pay any attention to that.Obviously those reviews are written by people that can't look or think beyond their own egos nor actually try to imagine what it must have been like, what the permanent affects were after such an altering event, and obvious emotional scars that must have continued on and on...After I finished the book, I re-read the preface and understood why there seemed to be pieces "I" wanted answers to, but understood why they weren't there.

3-0 out of 5 stars Operation Overflight: A Memoir of the U-2 Incident
This book is certainly a must have for the Cold War, Military Aviation and Spy afficionados out there! While the authors did their best to make the most of what little details Powers did/could provide them - especially about the actual missions he flew for the CIA - they failed to do justice to the historical significance of the event. Powers' actual flights and missions in the U-2 are not discussed in great detail (they never even mention the plane's actual altitude, there are no details about the U-2 except for some hearsay info on its imagined structural integrity (or lack thereof), and they assigned less than a page to discuss the other "special missions"), and there are very few details about the mission the book was actually written about. What you will nevertheless be able to read in detail about are his time spent in Russian prisons, the KGB interrogations, or his kind Latvian roomate Zigurd in Vladimir prison. The final section of the book is spent on the well-justified trashing of the CIA (afterall they gave him the shaft the same way NASA did to the Apollo 13 crew), and Powers provides some great insights into the personal dealings of the Agency.Reading it today, Powers' observations were way ahead of their time! You'll appreciate Powers Jr's epilogue that puts the entire book in perspective.Overall it is a great book, the only first-hand account of the U-2 incident you'll ever have, and as a matter of fact, I'll go and read it again!

5-0 out of 5 stars The U-2 Incident with Francis Gary Powers:
The Flt of the U-2 is a most inspiring book. I sat on the edge of my seat while reading it and finished it in one sitting wishing there was more to read, but happy that the Russians got their "just day in court" and finally Francis Gary Powers was exchanged for Rudolph Abel. Such a high flying plane, to be shot out of the skies, is unreal to me - what went wrong? No matter what Powers' wrote, we will never know the complete truth, will we? Thank God he came home safe, as he *almost* gave his life forhis country. A well done book and may he rest in peace as his son recounts his father's service to his country. God Bless. Trish Schiesser, whose brother SSGT Phil Noland served in the USAFSecurity Service during the time Powers took off and went missing in Russia.
5-0 out of 5 stars An espionage reader
Enjoyed it immensely. A hard to put down, revealing look at thishistorical, military, political event of the 1960's. 5-0 out of 5 stars A Great "American" Autobiography
Geronimo: His Own Story is an endlessly fascinating autobiography that belongs in the pantheon of other great American works of autobiography and memoir. This book should take its place alonside other great works of personal non-fiction such as The Autobiography of Malcom X, A Moveable Feast, The Autobiography of Mark Twain, Narrative of the Life of Frederick Douglass, and (arguably the best of the bunch) The Autobiography of Alice B. Toklas. This is a strong statement, but after reading this short autobiography it's at least an idea that should be entertained. I found things in this book that I was not expecting, and it ended up being a far more complex and intriguing portrait of Geronimo than I had previously entertained. The most fascinating side of Geronimo that comes across in these two-hundred pages is not Geronimo the warrior but Geronimo the diplomat.
5-0 out of 5 stars A warrior's words
"Geronimo: His Own Story" has been revised and edited, with an introduction and notes, by Frederick Turner. This book is the autobiography of the legendary Apache warrior, as told to S. M. Barrett. The copyright page notes that the main text was originally published as "Geronimo's Story of His Life" in 1906.
4-0 out of 5 stars The story in his words...
Mr. Barrett interviewed Geronimo after several years of his captivity and this is his version of what happened in the Apache Wars.Definately an interesting read and a great story. Not what you should read if interested in a complete history of the Apache Wars and the part Geronimo had, but still worthwhile as it tells it from his prespective in his old age. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderfully thorough Research
I have now read several books both on T.E. Lawrence, the Middle East, World War I and English governmental history. This is by far the best biography on T.E. Lawrence and the situation in the Middle East that I have read.John Mack did an outstanding job of researching Lawrence for this book. One of the most interesting sections of the book was reading the endnotes. They provide even more information about Mack's research as well as to clarify some previous misstatements about Lawrence.
5-0 out of 5 stars Almost as eloquent as Lawrence himself
Dr. John Mack's study of Lawrence is one of the most absorbing reads I've ever enjoyed in my lifetime. As Irving Howe wrote, "What finally draws one to Lawrence, making him not merely an exceptional figure, but a representative man of our century, is his courage and vulnerability in bearing the burden of consciousness." The impact that the trial by fire in Arabia appears to have had on his post-war life is shocking, and teaches us once again not to envy our great heroes. Lawrence wrote of General Allenby that great men cannot be judged by ordinary standards, anymore than the sharpness of the bow of an ocean liner can be judged by the sharpness of a razor. After reading "A Prince of Our Disorder," I recognize now that Lawrence was probably thinking of himself while writing those kind words about his former master, asking that he not be be judged by his hidden afflictions, torments, and self-doubts, all the while laying out those same imperfections for all the world to read. Lawrence warned us,"The documents are liars ... No man ever yet tried to write down the entire truth of any action in which he has been engaged." No man is truly capable of understanding his own subconscious motivations, but I doubt that anyone has ever struggled harder than Lawrence to achieve self-understanding. We will have to try to read between the lines, learn what we can, and apply that knowledge to enrich our own poor lives.
5-0 out of 5 stars We Will Never See Its Like Again
For years, I have studied the life and works of T. E. Lawrence. My research has lead me across the pages of hundreds of books including his own Seven Pillars of Wisdom, but the best biography and analysis of Lawrence I have yet encountered is A Prince of Our Disorder. Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A Great Read of a Man Going through the FFL
Here's one good book that takes you on the journey from a skinny teenager entering the gates of the French Foreign Legion (FFL) to a rugged muscle man leaving. For anyone who ever wondered about the FFL to those who want to know more, this book Tony tellsyou what happened, how he felt and how he was treated.

4-0 out of 5 stars Accurate report
The brutal aspect of the Foreign Legion is quite accurate, a few colleagues who served recently confirmed same. Concerning the boozing and the hookers, anyone who served in the Army and in the merchant marine (which I did) can confirm that this is quite common also.

4-0 out of 5 stars A Story of Perserverance
This is a first person account of one man's five year tour in the French Foreign Legion. The quote on the front cover of the book pretty much describes the book in one sentence:``A gripping and at times brutal story of life inside the Legion''.Mr. Sloane, an Englishman, describes his wandering through France as a young man, his decision to join the Legion, and his subsequent life changing journey as a member of the 2nd REP (the elite paratroopers of the FFL).This is a very personal story in which the author expresses his thoughts and feelings about many of the things that he saw and experienced as a member of the FFL.Overall, this is an engaging book, and the author makes it clear how demanding life in the FFL really is.This is a somewhat different book than Ewan McGorman's.This is much more of a personal account of one man's time in the FFL, McGorman's is more of a general description of the functioning of the Legion as an institution. The two are quite complimentary in my view, and if you have read one and found it interesting, you will like the other.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Amazing Doctor Doolittle
One of the sad things about books, especially non-fiction books, is that sooner or later they always slip into the past and few people ever read them again. The same seems to be true of America's great heroes, most of them anyway. They too seem to slip into the past and before long they too are all but forgotten. If you said to most Americans today, for example, "What do you know about Doctor Doolittle?"They would likely say, "Oh, he's the amazing fellow who talks to the animals."True, but there was once another Dr. Doolittle, one much more amazing than that other fellow, and this is his story - the story of an aviation pioneer, a war hero, and a truly great American.
5-0 out of 5 stars So Much More to the Man Who Led the Tokyo Raid
Childhood in the wilds of Alaska, early aviation pioneer, test pilot, Shell Oil executive, Tokyo raider, 8th Air Force Commander, and so much more. When American hero James Doolittle passed way in 1993, he completed a life that would be difficult for a dozen men to replicate.Though acknowledged in history as the man who led the Doolittle Raid on Tokyo, Doolittle's autobiography, I COULD NEVER BE SO LUCKY AGAIN, shows that there was much more to the man than his daring bomber mission.Raised on the Alaskan frontier, Doolittle eventually relocated to California where he garnered a reputation as a prankster and daredevil.During the First World War he joined the fledgling Army Air Corps.Though Doolittle was retained in the United States throughout the war, he chose to remain in service and help advance military aviation. In the years that followed, Doolittle was a key figure in the development of more advanced avionics, instrument flying, and proponent for 100 octane gasoline for aircraft.Aside from breaking cross country flight records and chasing Mexican bandits in early air-to-ground missions, Doolittle tourned South America as an aircraft salesman.
5-0 out of 5 stars Superbly written and presented autobiography...
This book definitely stands out as one of the superior autobiographies to come out of a major World War II figures. Its come a bit late but I found it to be quite rewarding reading material. Perhaps he was right, he would never be this lucky again since his life story appears to be filled with eternal good fortune, blessed by a first class mind and abilities. I was surprised to learned how much time he spent in Alaska (my home state) and many other details of his life which most readers will not know about. The book proves to be quite addictive and I frankly, read it in a single sitting. The man have done and experience so much stuff that it must have seem to be like a dream to him, looking back. I considered the book a must read material for anyone interested in a major World War II figure or anyone with any interest in aviation history. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Overdue detailed study of a key commander in the first year of the Pacific War
This is an important book for any student of the Pacific War, because it corrects the largely unrefuted negative accounts of Admiral Frank Jack Fletcher's service as commander of the U.S. carrier task forces in the first three of the four carrier battles of 1942 (Coral Sea, Midway, and Eastern Solomons). In fact, there were only two carrier battles in history where he did not command the winning side - Santa Cruz in October 1942, and Philippine Sea in 1944.
