5-0 out of 5 stars Life Changing
I read this book when encountering the crossroads of my own limited mindset. However, upon reading about Dr. Carson's life and philosophy I was drawn to this book and it has definitely been a catalyst in my personal and spiritual development. It's a small price to pay for something that can really help you...if you need it. Break out of that small mindset and get out there and do your best...then let God do the rest, as Dr. Carson says!

5-0 out of 5 stars Recommended reading for students
Since discovering the first printing of Dr. Carson's THINK BIG and GIFTED HANDS, I have been of the strong opinion that either or both should actually be required reading for middle school and high school students. I remember being forced to read Bulfinch's Mythology, The Scarlet Letter, and other really unhelpful books, to delve into them and learn everything about them--how does that help pre-teens and teens, who are starting to question who they are and where they belong in life? Those books were useless. But Dr. Carson has MANY real answers for us all, and I believe that if everyone read his books, there would be a lot less negativity in the world, and much more kindness, caring, and a sense of worth and purpose for every individual, and isn't that what we're all really looking for?

5-0 out of 5 stars Awesome
This book is awesome. Very good read. Very moving. Very real. Someone you wish you could meet. The book is just awesome to see a young man come from tenements to tops. I pray he continues to do a service to all people. Get the book and THINK BIG. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Completely accurate account on living with short-term memory loss
Ms. Osborn is a godsend to have created this book. I am a survivor of an illness which greatly affected my short-term memory, and although it is difficult for me to remember the details of the book overall, I could 100% relate to each and every sentence as I read it. If you are friend or family to one with short-term memory loss, or if you simply wish to understand life with virtually no short-term memory, read this book. You will have a completely different outlook on life once you do.

5-0 out of 5 stars An Instructive Read for the Head Injured
This was a well done piece that describes some of the many deficits head injured people suffer. This is particularly valuable since so little literature is available to lay persons interested in head injuries. I found myself clearly identifying with Claudia and feeling very fortunate not to have suffered quite as much as she.

5-0 out of 5 stars This Book Rocks My Socks!!
This book is REALLY awesome. I like how Taylor makes St. Luke ( Lucanus) like a real person instead of some holy guy that you can't relate yourself to. It's full of Israelites, Romans, and Lucanus' quest to find who he is and what God calls him to do. It's truely hard to put down and is a beautiful story. I'm 13 and I reccomend this book to kids my age and up. If you want a really good book to read... this book is for you!

5-0 out of 5 stars A great novel. Truly inspiring.
I just read this book and found it hard to put down. Ms Caldwell's description of the Roman world along with the portrait of the main character make this novel a must whether you are a religious person or simply a lover of history.

4-0 out of 5 stars Dear and Glorious Physician is a Great Novel
This is not only a great period read, but a truly outstanding novel. I thoroughly enjoyed every page of this book. Caldwell's research of the time period helps make the novel more believable, and makes the reader feel as if they were in the first century Roman Empire. Caldwell pays fine attention to detail when describing her settings, emotional natures, and physical traits of her characters. An example can be found on page 493; "The earth danced in heat waves; the sea flashed like blue fire." Here Caldwell personifies the earth, and uses simile to provide imagery of Lucanus's searching, and his attempts to record the life of Jesus. Again in the journey narrative, Caldwell uses metaphor to bring an ominous atmosphere to the mind's eye saying, "The moon was a yellow skull in the dark sky." Caldwell is careful not to clutter the work with description; she develops the plot well. I found her writing style easy to follow, which engages the reader and keeps them wanting more. There is no overwhelming theme of the novel; the book follows one man's journey, Lucanus (St. Luke), to come to know God and document the life of Christ. Although the book is religous in nature, Caldwell gives an objective perspective and does not preach to the reader. This is a great novel for people of all walks of life. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Intriguing story
I read this over the summer as my summer reading for an Advanced Placement Psychology course (I got to choose the book.)I found it striking how I had never heard of this form of stalking, yet it is a very real thing. This made me think twice about going into psychology as a major, but after a while the edge wore off.The book is a must-read for anyone into psych, especially abnormal psych.

5-0 out of 5 stars Not just frightening for women!
As a male Sophomore in college reading this book I was thoroghly terrified! It is noted that this does not just happen to women, but to men as well. Many times after reading this book was I looking around my carbefore getting into it, just making sure Fran Nightingale wasn't lurkingbehind it!Genuinly frightening (moreso because its a true story) read foreither gender!

4-0 out of 5 stars A Must-Read for ALL young women. It can happen to anyone.
This is the first real Pop-psych book that describes the Stalking Phenomenon in correct and accurate Mental Health language. This book was recommended to me by a City Prosecuter who felt it would help me understandwhy My Ex-boyfriend stalked me with the aid of his new wife (of allpeople!). Stalking is NOT just ex-boyfriends and Yes, women can becomeerotically obsessed with other women in a non-sexual manner OR, as in mycase, they can be motivated to carry on an Erotomanic pursuit of a targetwhom their lover has been stalking which can resultin a whole new range ofStalking behavior. This particular book deals with a Patient stalking herPsychiatrist with whom she has become obsessed - a common subset ofErotomania. However, the book also attempts and manages to cover prettywell the basics of Erotomaniacally motivated Stalkings in general whichmakes it a valuable addition to anyone's Library.ANYONE can become atarget and Young Women should read a book like this before they leave homeor college to enter the workforce.Even that may not be soon enough sinceI know of a few cases where friends of mine have had their highschool andjunior high aged daughters subjected to such behavior.Even so.. I feel itis fair to say this is an essential book for Young Women. Men of all agesshould and can read this as well, but statisically, women are at a higherrisk which is why I singled them out as a group.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A Must Read for Health Care Professionals
Book:"Into the Unknown, The Remarkable Life of Hans Kraus" by Susan Schwartz
5-0 out of 5 stars GREAT READ FOR HISTORY BUFFS
"Into the Unknown" is a compelling read for both the casual reader and for anyone interested in modern presidential history. As a biography of a fascinating character, it is difficult to put down. More significantly it is a 'must' for anyone interested in unravelling the mysteries of President Kennedy's health and the conflicts amongst the crowd of doctors who treated him.

4-0 out of 5 stars Kaplin hits the mark.
I'm something of a junkie for medical narrative but Kaplin has it down to an art form. Kaplin's extensive experience working as a physician in the worlds most underserved and dangerous, war torn areas combined with his gift as a storyteller make for an engaging read. The books flows nicely for the most part, but the author occasionally slips into dry, self-indulgent commentaries on world affairs.

5-0 out of 5 stars An amazingly broad and insightful personal account.
This book was appealing to me on two levels; it gave me some insight on what life is like as a physician, and also allowed me to experience a wide variety of social microcosms.
4-0 out of 5 stars interesting and worthwhile reading
I found this book to be a real page-turner, and very thought provoking too.The chapters detail the authors travels, and medical practice around the globe. Most of the featured locales are very much off-the-beaten path, and relatively unstable. This makes the non-fiction book read somewhat like a good adventure novel, and I found it to be pretty exciting. There is a lot more to it than tales of adventure though. The author makes observations on politics and medicine that, while you may or may not agree with, will probably make you do a little bit of critical thinking.Any book that can do all that, is in my opinion worth reading. While I highly recommend this book for those with an interest in emergency medicine or international affairs, others with little interest in these fields may well appreciate this book just as much. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Devastating, beautiful and true
'Borrowed Time' is the most unpretentious, cliche free account of love I've read. So much of it's power lies in what Paul does not say about his lover: describing him most often as his most precious 'friend' he asks the reader to understand, to implicitly know the strength of his passion. The simple assumption that readers across cities, countries, cultures will understand his emotions is what gives the story so much beauty. I fell in love with both Paul and Roger, or more specifically, the strength of what they had together.
5-0 out of 5 stars One of the best books ever.
I don't know how this book didn't win every award the publishing world has to offer.Quite simply, this one volume is the most emotionally devastating work I've ever read.I've read about hate crimes, political assassination and Nazi persecution, but none touch this.Several times I had to set the book down because I was no longer able to read through great, racking sobs and eyes nearly swollen shut.I grieved.
5-0 out of 5 stars If you want to know what love is
I listened to Paul Monette read from his memoir on a recorded book; and the experience was unforgettable, profound, wholly human, and perhaps the best meditation on love I've ever read.Without going into the details of the 1980's AIDS "scene," which this book also authentically and accurately portrays, this "love story" depicts and explored and revealed so tenderly and so poetically that it should be placed on all the bookstores in the relatinship section of the major chains--and recommended for straight and gay couples. And while the booksellers are at it, they should remainder all the John Gray, Dr. Phil and every other "author" who address relationships in a vapid, moronic, demeaning way. This book may be the best argument for "gay marriage," although I hesitate in recommending this in fear that such a beautiful relationship as portrayed in this work could be subsumed under such a shaky institution. It would also be a d_mn good book for heterosexual, especially "conservative Christian" couples, men and women to read together: Not necessarily to change minds about the law, but at least to change misconceived perceptions about their fellow humans. And a note to women, if you would like your guy to be a better "listener" and a better "lover," read this book--not those goofball "women's magazines."This book might also make some right-wing ideologues re-think some of their kneeejerk definitions of "values" and realize that perhaps it is THEIR values that need some looking into.N.B.I am not gay.I am a straight male. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars She nailed it!
I completely enjoyed this book, not because of the subject matter, but because someone finally put into words what I was feeling.Part of the illness of compulsive eating is the aloneness.Suddenly, I don't feel so alone.Ann Pia was able to love her sister unconditionally and that is what everyone is looking for in this life. She has helped me find my own voice, by giving me words for the emotions.I would recommend this book for anyone that struggles with complusive eating or anyone that loves someone that eats compulsively.

5-0 out of 5 stars wow...powerful, moving, personal
This book grabbed my soul as it chronicles a real life tragedy unfolding in slow motion from both first person and third person point of view. Beautifully written, insightful, engrossing, and personal. Sometimes as I read it I almost felt like I was in the movie "Being John Malkovich" as I really saw life through Joyce's eyes.I can't decide if I should describe the emotions felt while reading this as being "brutally honest", or "beautifully honest".
5-0 out of 5 stars Remarkably Compelling Memoir
Ann Pai has set herself apart from other memoirists by transcending her topic to embrace the larger themes of sisterhood, compulusion, and familial responsibility. While the story itself is gripping, what is even more fascinating is Pai's unique ability to view the tragedy of her sister's life and death as both an insider and a curious observer.Honest and unflinching, and devoid of unnecessary sentimentality, My Other Body will speak to anyone who has ever navigated the terrifying medical maze, only to find darkness at its end. ... I recently became a pediatric cardiac intensive care nurse.I never really understood what it was like to be a family, or cardiac surgeon until reading this book.It is so amazing that someone could write such as informational insiring book, that has no health background. It makes me proud to be a nurse for this type of unit.

4-0 out of 5 stars A very focused look at one surgical team and congenital heart defects
I love to read medical non-fiction, and have read Danielle Ofri, Tilda Shalof, Atul Gawande, and about fifteen other authors who have written about their own journey as a medical student, resident, doctor, surgeon, or nurse. The time I spent as a teen in the hospital for a lung problem left me with a strong desire to understand how hospitals work and how people in the medical field think.

Once I started reading The Presidents' Doctor, I found it difficult to put the book down. What especially intrigued me were the insights into the personal sides of Presidents Harding, Coolidge and Hoover as seen by Dr. Joel Boone, who served as a White House physician during their administrations.Despite their prominence, the three Presidents had individual and family joys, sorrows and challenges just as everyone else.5-0 out of 5 stars Incredible Man - Incredible Feats

Editorial Review

Serving as doctor to the Americans "wintering over" at the South Pole in 1999, Jerri Nielsen made headlines when she discovered a lump in her breast that a self-administered biopsy revealed to be an aggressive, fast-growing cancer. No flights in or out of Antarctica are possible during the continent's long winter, and Nielsen's account of giving herself chemotherapy while she and her fellow "Polies" waited for the weather to break is even more gripping than the news reports at the time. She's candid about her pain and fear; the media battle waged by her embittered ex-husband makes her ordeal even more challenging. Interestingly enough, however, this high drama does not overshadow Nielsen's deeper narrative of a woman who came "to the Ice" seeking new meaning in a life shattered by divorce and estrangement from her children. In the back-to-basics world of Antarctic medicine, with outdated equipment, few supplies, and no assistants, she rediscovered her vocation as a doctor, free from the imperatives of corporate-directed medicine. More importantly, Nielsen found spiritual solace in the world's most extreme environment, where she was "introduced slowly to the notion of giving more than you have and using less than you need ... of knowing that all you really own are your own thoughts." She makes the glories of the Pole so palpable that, by the end, readers will not even be surprised when she signs an e-mail to her family, "from the wonderful Ice." Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Warm and Beautiful, not gruesome.
This book was a fascinating portrait of the American South Pole Station and the people who winter over there. It is rich with details that one would never have thought of, like the difficulty of contacting the outside world when the communications satellite only peeks over the horizon for a brief time each day.All the people at the station are portrayed as exceptional, (maybe eccentric), strong, very human people who survive in part because of the great love and respect with which they treat each other--not to mention a strong sense of humor!Really inspiring.Made me want to go there myself.

4-0 out of 5 stars Where Life and Death Meet the Ice
"Ice Bound" is three stories that come together to create one indelible experience: a woman's struggle and escape from an abusive marriage, a travel adventure to the South Pole, and a life and death fight against cancer. Dr. Jerri Nielsen lived all three of these stories and writes about how they merged into one phenomenal journey.
3-0 out of 5 stars What Coulda Been Great Turned Out Just Good...
Dr. Jerri Nielsen's trek to the South Pole would have been filled with danger no matter what...most of the people that head down there must have a few screws loose to want to spend a year in complete darkness, with extremely cold temperatures, only to lose (in part) their social skills, their memories, and their sanity. What makes her story somewhat extraordinary is the fact that as the only trained medical professional 'wintering over' at the South Pole, she diagnosed and was forced to treat her own breast cancer with a small untrained support staff.

Editorial Review

Dr. Elders, with David Chanoff, has written a folksy and humble account of her life's journey from sharecropper's daughter in rural Arkansas to Surgeon General of the United States. Interestingly, given the controversial circumstances of her forced resignation when she was demonized by the Republican right for open discussion of sexuality, Dr. Elders reveals an upbringing suffused with the sort of family values that she was accused of destroying. "There wasn't any alcoholism," she writes, "nor was there any talk of men beating their wives, or of separation or divorce either." Her own sex education was typically scant, and indeed one has the impression of a woman who remained somewhat naive on such matters even as she gained an education beyond the comprehension of her parents. ... 1-0 out of 5 stars It scares me that this women become the Surgeon General
I bought this book because I had heard many things about Elders that made me think, "God Lord, how did she ever become the Surgeon General, she sounds like a radical sex obsessed idiot." then i read the book, and it confirmed my previous hypothesis. And from watching Fox news, I've also learned that she is promoting a book about how pre pubecents should engage in sex and be given condoms in school. She has also previously tried to have Grade Schools teach MASTURBATION to children. She sounds like a lunatic who came into power not from intelligence or morality, but because of other reasons that I will not say because people tend to get up in arms about certain topics. I Found the book to be badly written, and though she only CO WROTE it, I can only imagine how it would have been if she had written by herself...

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Book had me crying and cheering all at the same time
Dr. Elders memories are both inspirational and heartbreaking. She is truly a woman who came up from the depths of despair and poverty by her own bootstraps. She never backed down from those hypocrites in Washington andArkansas and in her book she makes no apologies for anything that she hassaid or done.I feel like I know her better now that I've read her book,it is truly heartwarming and worth a read. The writing was well done andvery well presented. This book deserves more than five stars. You goJoycelyn!!!! This book has made me believe that I want to dedicate my lifeto helping those of our country who are less fortunate, helping them willconcrete goals and ideas, instead of empty promises that leave them hungryand homeless with no hope.Joycelyn is truly an American hero, and one ofthe greatest women of the century ... 5-0 out of 5 stars "What would you do to save your brother's life?"
A couple of years ago I had a cancer scare. There was a growth in my kidney that the doctors said was either a dense cyst or a tumor. So I had to have a CAT scan every six months for a year in order to monitor the growth. If it stayed the same, I was OK.But if it expanded, cancer was the most likely diagnosis.Fortunately, it turned out to be a cyst. But I came away from that experience with the knowledge that things can go terribly wrong in my body even if I do everything right. How do you deal with such a worst-case scenario, and how far do you go for a cure?
3-0 out of 5 stars Science vs. Profitability vs. Humanity
The book itself is compelling as it glides you through the journey Jaime Heywood (the protagonist) takes in order to engineer a cure for his brother who has been diagnosed with ALS.
5-0 out of 5 stars Heartbreaking and uplifting:
I read a review of this book and instantly wanted to read it.It is a heartbreaking story of an amazing family and the sacrifices one brother makes for another. It is well researched and although science is one of the major stars here, the author makes it understandable to the lay person.Itmade me laugh and cry along with the family - the kind of book you save to read again.I will follow Steven's progress with care and keep this family in my heart for long after the book is finished. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Another Great Book by a Great Author
Colin Evans has written a number of excellent books on forensics and this one is just as much of an edge-of-your-seat page-turner as the others, if not more so. The book's focus is on a subset of the many cases in which Britain's Sir Bernard Spilsbury was involved as the much revered, indeed legendary, forensic pathologist. The main highlights of Spilsbury's life are also included. The author's writing style is as witty as it is engaging, often tongue-in-cheek. The words that he uses to describing these many cases seem to be very carefully selected and put together. But it is much more likely that this excellent style of writing simply comes naturally to this most gifted author; I cannot praise it enough. This book will be indispensable to anyone who enjoys reading well-crafted true crime stories in which forensics plays an important role. Very highly recommended!

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Examination of an Early Forensic Pioneer
I've read accounts of other forensic pathologists at the turn of the century, but this one is easiest to digest. It has a smooth reading style, lays out the crimes in sufficient detail that you can follow the 'plot' and then shows how Spilsbury and his associates helped lay the forensic groundwork for conviction. Cases include such well-known murders as "The Brides in the Bath," among others.

5-0 out of 5 stars Poignant, Unpretentious, and Moving
I stumbled across this book in a used book store and read it because I hadnothing else on hand. It gripped me from the first page, where the authordescribes his four year old son, Max, staring down at the author on thefloor as he suffers a heart attack. Before this book, I knew little aboutheart diseaseof any sort. I've learned a lot about heart disease, but alsoabout courage and determination. This book will appeal to a broad range ofreaders. It is beautifully written, often amusing, and always gripping. Ibarely survived his heart transplant, and have a new awe for anybody whocontemplates undergoing this procedure.
