4-0 out of 5 stars I had brain surgery...too!
I had the pleasure of somewhat relearning how to read using this book after I had brain surgery also. If there is anyone out there that has had brain surgery or knows someone who has had it, it is a must read to get a small taste of what the effects before and after the surgery are. The little scetches in the book are great to add a bit of humor to a huge situation, which is much needed to sit back and laugh at.

4-0 out of 5 stars Humorist Reflects on her Brain Surgery
Author and illustrator Suzy Becker writes about her experience being diagnosed with a brain tumor and having brain surgery. Her great sense of humor (including the book title) and her little drawings throughout the book keep the reader's interest while she still manages to tell her painful story with honesty. It is especially helpful that she focuses on the unintended, temporary damage that can come from brain surgery and the long, difficult road to recovery. Brain surgery survivors will identify with her struggle; hopefully, other readers will gain a better understanding of those who undergo this type of surgery.

5-0 out of 5 stars Realistic from a professional's point of view
I am a speech language pathologist who has worked with patients following brain surgery in a variety of settings.Ms. Becker's narrative was highly moving and realistic - minus any self-pity component.I could appreciate her valid perceptions of the limitations of therapy and the formulaic responses of some of her therapists, e.g. the neuropsychologist. Her book underscored to me that it was her determination, her support system, the natural healing process that brought her so far along the road to recovery.I recommend this fascinating, beautifully written and humorous book. One cannot help having empathy for her plight and applauding her resilience. ... Editorial Review

In this outstanding collection of stories and "lessons," Pamela Grim, an emergency medicine physician, reveals the painful truths learned from the daily witnessing of the underside of life, where most who enter are addicts, idiots, drunks, and psychotics whose poor choices have led them to the end of the line. The ER is a more tragic, chaotic, and weird place than any TV show has ever portrayed. A man walks in with a butcher knife imbedded in his skull, a teenage girl asks incredulously, "I'm pregnant?" 3-0 out of 5 stars disappointing
Overall the book is an OKread - it would have been much better if the author could get over herself.I'm glad she became a doctor and I'm glad she helped out in areas of the world that desperately need medical professionals. If the writting had been more about the situations themselves and less about getting the reader to worship or pity the author then it would have been a good book. Many of her comments made me feel sorry for those who had her as a doctor -I hope that the treatment of those patients was more caring than the write ups.

4-0 out of 5 stars a grear look at emergancy room life
In "Just here trying to save a few lives" Dr. Pamela Grim paints us a vivid picture of life in the ER. As an EMT student I found the book captivating and informative. The book started a little slow but quickly picked up the pace. As we travel with Dr. Grim from hospital to hospital and from country to country we see the struggles and trials that doctors face every day. There was a lot of medical language that, had I not been an EMT student I would have not understood but would still be able to follow the story. Overall this was a very good book and I would recommend it to any one interested in going in to the medical filed or to anyone who is curious of what doctors face in their profession.

4-0 out of 5 stars Grim determination to make a difference
Seasoned ER doctor Pamela Grim gives us a bleak and visceral view of her experiences in the ER and doing voluntary service for Medecins sans Frontieres. Unlike glossy TV programs and other stylised reports from these hostile territories, she does nothing to glamorise her work.

3-0 out of 5 stars Welcome Reaction from a Family Therapist
Lauren Slater presents a vivid tale of a therapist' s sojourn, examining mental illness from both an insider's and outsider' s perspective. Slater takes us on a journey through her own work in hospital settings, culminating in a personal coda. She confronts unbelievable countertransference at Mount Vernon, the same place she was hospitalized, with a client suffering from a similar constellation of symptoms. She is unique in the mental health community, populated by professionals attempting to abstract themselves from their clientele in the name of objectivity.Although, my psychoanalytic frame dictates an objective stance, I was deeply touched by her sincere humanism and willingness to explore the subjective world of her clients' alien worlds.
4-0 out of 5 stars The Art of Vulnerability
Her work is not a work of non-fiction.She admits that she has changed the identities she has written about and confounded their settings. Therefore "Welcome To My Country" should be regarded as a work of fiction. But that is nothing to spit on.
5-0 out of 5 stars writes like an angel
Read this in the library of Slater's secondary school when I was in hs, but didn't know it was by a graduate.Looked at it from that perspective of knowing who it was by this time w/out knowing that I had read it.I knew that I had read it because I remembered Marie's cracking peach nail polish.I have remembered that image forever; it has been echoing in my mind.I think that I was skimming the book, and hadn't read the personal part before too.So, if I remembered parts of the book after probably 7 years, this has to be an extraordinarily poetic book. After I read the book, I remember thinking maybe I should become a psychologist (i really don't know what i am going to do yet, but the book really did make an impression on me nevertheless). So, this book deserves really to be in any library, and not on the basis of the author graduating from that school! The author comes across as being very compassionate and well spoken. She writes like an angel. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Not for ladies only?
OK, I'm humble enough to admit I was wrong. When one of my best friends, a Volvo-driving soccer mom if there ever was one, suggested that I read and PURCHASE "Into The Blue", I was skeptical at best. Scenario: author and sister rehabilitate stroke-afflicted father so he can - *gag* - fly again. Yet another "chick" book. Ho-hum.
4-0 out of 5 stars A fascinating story
This book is the fascinating story of two sisters and their dad who was suffering froma stroke. The sisters are determined to get him back to his airplane. In this book the author underlines the support a patient needs from his doctor for a fast and safe recovery. This book will definitely be a welcome read to any one suffered from a stroke.
4-0 out of 5 stars Exhilarating Read!
I loved this book! The writing was so sharp and funny, and the story is heartwarming and hilarious, without being overly sentimental.

5-0 out of 5 stars An inspiring and personal history
From the very start, the first person accounts of war in Mark Littleton and Chuck Wright's "DOC" bring you immediately into the experiences of life and death in the battles fought by American sons and daughters since World War I.Each account from a medic or from one of the countless souls saved by a medic on some foreign shore reminds you of the millions of soldiers, marines, sailors and airmen who have put themselves in harm's way to defend our precious way of life. From Marine Jerry Jolly's quest to find the corpsman who saved his life in Korea to Wheeler Lipes' courageous performance of an emergency appendectomy in the austere conditions of a USN submarine on patrol, these stories will stir your heart. The medics, corpsmen, and nurses measure up admirably, facing horrifying injuries and using their determination and ingenuity to save lives and comfort the injured as best they can in the chaos of combat. As an Air Force surgeon, this book demonstrated to me the fine tradition of American military wartime medical care preceding me and the large footsteps I have to fill. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars a good introduction to freud's ideas
well organized/categorized and very readable. but i found all the small typos annoying.

5-0 out of 5 stars Analysing Freud...
Pamela Thurschwell's text on Sigmund Freud is part of a recent series put out by the Routledge Press, designed under the general editorial direction of Robert Eaglestone (Royal Holloway, University of London), to explore the most recent and exciting ideas in intellectual development during the past century or so. To this end, figures such as Martin Heidegger, Jacques Derrida, Friedrich Nietzsche, Paul Ricoeur, and other influential thinkers in critical thought are highlighted in the series, planned to include at least 21 volumes in all.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars to think i knew emily way back when ...
ok, i admit it - i went to med school with Dr. Transue so I am biased - I like her personally. But while that may bias my opinion of the book, it also lets me assess the book from a first hand perspective. Her writing really "captures the moment". It is so accurate that I kept waiting for the part where she mentioned my name or had me walking through the door.Never happened, but regardless - the stories she told were very realistic, and the emotions she conveyed were the same types of feelings that most of us experienced as we went through our medical training.great job emily - waiting for the sequel!
5-0 out of 5 stars Very well written, compassionate stories
Being a Registered Nurse myself and also being married to a physician, I'm very aware of all the hospital stories that occur during training. In fact, I dated many medical students when I was young and working at a teaching hospital. I also now live in Seattle. So this book was a "given" that I would read it.

3-0 out of 5 stars Interesting...
This was an interesting book and I feel that I learned a number of things about medical school education. However, I must agree with the other reviewers that Mr. Konner is a bit of a narcissist and a little too pessimistic. If you can ignore his self-aggrandizing tone and slight pessimism, this can be a fairly interesting and informative read. As far as the literature on medical education, I can't say this book really stands out. I recommend reading "Intern Blues" first.

4-0 out of 5 stars Candid, yet Idealistic
Konner's "Becoming A Doctor" chronicles the experiences, perceptions, & problems he had as a third-year medical student.Konner repeatedly remarks that he was much older than most of his peers as well as many of the residents, but what he doesn't explicitly articulate is his different perspective on patient care and, well, his compassion. He seems more idealistic than most of the other characters in his narrative -- I suspect this may be a consequence of his age & life experiences.Nevertheless, I enjoyed and appreciated the experiences he shared, especially since they are told from the perspective of a man in a different phase of life. There are several books that chronicle life as a medical student --- this is just one --- and this book ought to be regarded as one that deserves a peek for what it is:medical school as experienced from a well-educated man on the verge of middle-age.

3-0 out of 5 stars Interesting, but seriously flawed and dated
Although I did enjoy portions of this book, I was also particularly annoyed at his constant misogynistic tone -- women, be they patients or fellow physicians -- are often first described physically, with particular note paid to their attractiveness. It seems that Konner clearly believes he is superior to many of his co-workers, as he repeatedly interrupts the medical narrative to mention his status in the anthropological field. This isn't a terrible book, but it certainly isn't a book I'd recommend to very many people. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars A remarkable, heartfelt narrative about dialysis & humanity
My fiancee bought me this book along with a few others on kidney disease after my grandfather was told that he would soon begin dialysis treatments. I am really grateful that I had the opportunity to read it. It is informative, enjoyable, and most of all, insightful. I have purchased 3 more copies --- 1 for my mother; 1 for my grandpa's two living sisters to share; and 1 for his nephrologist to keep in his office.
5-0 out of 5 stars *Educational, personal and entertaining... well-written....*
I am not a dialysis patient but a good friend of mine is and I really got a lot out of this book. David keeps his story on a light and informative note. His endurance and strength are an inspiration to many people who have to deal with illnesses or even with everyday life challenges. I thoroughly enjoyed this book and will recommend it to anyone who needs a boost and a few hours of quiet time and reflection. Thank you for sharing your story, David.

1-0 out of 5 stars Potential for a good book, just potential though
Wissing accomplished the task of flattening the Himalayas with his two dimensional portrayal of the Sheltons, the Chinese, the Tibetans, and the continent of Asia.He glossed over the Unequal Treaties, Opium War, or any other conflicts with the West that would cast doubt on the altruistic motives of the missionaries and ruin his "feel good" story. The book lacked any perspective to place the Sheltons in, and thereby deprived a lot of their work of meaning.I was left with no clue that they rode out a two revolutions, that Dr. Shelton was a great diplomat, or even how high up Tibet is, other than an occasional sideways reference. There was a lot of potential for a very good and interesting book about Dr. Shelton, but either by accident or intent it was left with the substance of a "Chicken Soup" book.

2-0 out of 5 stars Boring
Reads like a medical chart.Stacatic and abrupt.I've read many vet books and the only redeeming factor in this book is that it is about animals.James Herriot he is not!

4-0 out of 5 stars Heartwarming vignettes
The short stories in Pet ER give you greater compassion and care for your pets.Dr. Porter shares story after story of animals in need of medical attention and how animal, owner and veterinarian worked together to bring healing.A good book for casual reading.

5-0 out of 5 stars A heart warming story of a small animal veterinarian
Dr. Porter does a great job with his 'down home' style in bringing to life what happens to people who love their pets and want them taken care of.He shares the struggles of the pets, their families, and how he and his ownfamily tie into the complete story. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars An outstanding account of the terrible first years of the AIDS epidemic
The Zombie Curse: A Doctor's Twenty-Five-Year Journey Into The Heart Of The Aids Epidemic In Haiti by Arthur M. Fournier (Physician at the Jackson Memorial Hospital and Professor of Family Medicine and Internal Medicine and Vice-Chairman of Family Medicine and Associate Dean for Community Health in Miami, Florida) is the remarkable story of Dr. Fournier's passionate struggle to understanding the terrifying truths of the AIDS virus. Having first been introduced to an AIDS patient in 1979, Fournier determined to take action in helping to discover the cure for this lethal epidemic as it swiftly unfolded throughout the United States and the world. The Zombie Curse reveals the devastation experienced by the Haitian people as the prescriptions offered had little or no effect on the patients, and the broadening tragedy became increasingly pervasive through Haitian society. Very strongly recommended for all non-specialist general readers seeking a greater understanding of the early years of the AIDS outbreak, The Zombie Curse is an outstanding account of the terrible first years of AIDS epidemic and a first-hand account of the often empty pursuit of helping the Haitian victims AIDS.

5-0 out of 5 stars The End Of Time
This book is a very good book if you are interested in learning about 9/11 and how it happened. This book had a very good story line and it has gone into a lot of detail about everything it talks about. This book was very insightful. I enjoyed to read this book because it told me how everything happened at 9/11. It also teaches you life lessons and it does this without trying to. It makes you think about your life. This book also teaches you to live your life to the fullest because if you don'you might run out of time. That was the cancer part of the book. The man thought that he couldn't get cancer but then he did. This tells you that anything can happen at anytime.

5-0 out of 5 stars Poignant and, as usual, well written
I think Horowitz's political persona obscures important facts about him as a man and a writer: He is very obviously an honest and courageous guy, and he also pens beautiful prose. This book will, in no way, disappoint: surprisingly, I found it to be a quite pleasant, thought-provoking rumination on a difficult subject that I, like most others, would normally have steered clear of. Had I not already been a fan, it is certain that I would have missed an important opportunity at personal introspection. (Thanks, David.)

3-0 out of 5 stars Viva Velikovsky...he can help clear up agnostic doubts
My nephew recommended Tammy Bruce and David Horowitz to me...to clear my mind he probably supposes. As I glance through some of the reviews I noticed one which dismissed Zinn and Chomsky as "clowns".Apparently I am not an agnostic.I believe in clowns, just as I believe in life and respect for all of it.

Editorial Review

When Julia Tavalaro opened her eyes after spending seven months in a coma, she awoke to a nightmare. Nobody in the hospital ward to which she had been consignedeven noticed that she was alert. Paralyzed and unable to speak, Tavalaro had no way ofmaking them take notice. She spent the next six years languishing in her bed, andalthough able to hear everything around her, she was unable to communicate.Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Good Job Julia
I thought that the book was exelent and that Julia could have talked more about her family and more about Goldwater. Overall she did a fantastic job at writing this book.

4-0 out of 5 stars Make it mandatory reading for anyone in the medical field!
A nurse recommended the book to my sister. She said it changed the way she treats patients. My sister read it in one afternoon. It makes you think and reminds you to count your blessings!

5-0 out of 5 stars Look up, and up, and up, and up!
Those who weap because they have no shoes should meet this woman who has no feet, no hands, no voice, no normalcy.Andyetshe greets the day with poetry and refuses -- against odds few people could bear -- to loosen her grip on reality, on the future, on hope.Where some autobiographical writers might seek our pity, Julia demands our respect. Where some labor to generate tears, Julia aims to generate cheers -- and at times outbursts of profanity. Her story is a fast, easy-to-followread packed with flashbacks, present-day tales and, the most essential element of all, hope ... Read more
