5-0 out of 5 stars John Cook[e]: a brave man of principle
I confess: I like the way Geoffrey Robertson thinks and the way he writes even if I don't always agree with his conclusions. This book is a great read.If you can suspend your knowledge of the history (and any associated bias) and look at the events through the perspective of the law, then this is a wonderful fresh look at the legal issues uncovered/exposed by these events.
5-0 out of 5 stars Speaking Truth to Power at a Horrible Cost
Along with Dickens' Bleak House, this book is a must read for all common law lawyers and those who aspire to join the profession (to be read after Bleak House!!).It is a riveting story unto itself, describing the first piercing (and the last for another 300 years)of the shield of sovereign immunity by a low-born, commoner barrister whose courage, character and conviction allowed him to face down and bring to book one of the most brutal dictators of his day, King Charles Stuart I of England. The parallels between the trial of Charles 360 years ago and those of Milosevic and Saddam today are unnerving to say the least.
5-0 out of 5 stars Afflict the Comfortable
This is a book that should be read by all American lawyers and law students. It puts the lie to the various myths about the development of Anglo-American law and its near godlike propagandists like Coke and Hale. With a little thought we see exactly what the framers of the American constitution hoped to avoid when they put limits on the power of the government.Thank God, so to speak, that we no longer draw and quarter (as revoltingly described in great, yet necessary, detail) as punishment. The United States and the Commonwealth are fortunate to have inheirited their legal systems well after this dark period.

5-0 out of 5 stars Texas Tornado
The book is not only a rich history of the fight for women's rights in Texas and the US but a wonderful look into the life of an incredible woman. The story is told with such warmth that you end up loving this tough, spunky, little woman. The book is a must read for every lawyer in the state of Texas while also a wonderful example of a dedicated wife (under often horrid circumstances) and a devoted mother. 5-0 out of 5 stars Great Insight into The Mind of a Judge
This book is, as President Teddy Roosevelt would say, DELIGHTFUL.
4-0 out of 5 stars Tolerance, peace, and wit
It's not every day that you read a book containing the full text of a consent agreement between parties to a health statute dispute and still find it very enjoyable. It's just as uncommon for a federal appeals court judge to write a book about the time he oversaw the peaceful assembly of thousands of middle-aged hippies in the woods of North Carolina. But that's what Judge Dave and the Rainbow People is about.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Author & subject both "salt of the earth"
As the folks at Amazon could tell you, I read many novels and very few biographies.I am a corporate lawyer, and have not practiced constitutional law since I clerked for Judge Ferren, the author of this Rutledge bio, more than 20 years ago.I picked up this book because of my connection to the author, but I stuck with it for other reasons.First, the writing is elegant and precise; it is a very readable book. The book tells the story of a good man (and very good lawyer/dean/judge) who is concerned with doing his job right, respected others, was respected by others in return, and achieved great things -- what an encouraging, uncynical story!(Not dissimilar to the author's own story, a fact that creates an extra richness of texture in this book, especially in its descriptions of the life of an appellate judge.)In addition, the constitutional issues that the Court dealt with during WWII and the immediate post-war era remain fascinating -- and very timely. These issues are made understandable to nonexperts without being oversimplified.I learned a lot, and greatly enjoyed the process.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Fine Biography of a Neglected Justice
At long last, thanks to Judge Ferren, we have a complete biography of Justice Wiley Rutledge. While Rutledge is not much remembered today, and his tenure on the Supreme Court was relatively brief (1943-49), his significance merits more attention than he has received.Judge Ferren employs a completely different approach than the only other biography of the Justice, Harper's "Justice Rutledge and the Bright Constellation" (1965).Harper focused almost exclusively upon Justice Rutledge's decisions. Judge Ferren does not get Rutledge on the court until page 222 (out of 548).While one might conclude that perhaps too much detail occupies the pre-Court discussion, I can't think of another judicial biography that so effectively affords one a feeling of becoming so intimately familiar with its subject. This initial section is particularly effective in discussing the political maneuvering that accompanied filling several vacancies on the Court, including Rutledge's. The book's central focus, Rutledge on the Court, is very well developed.Judge Ferren not only brings his own insight into the judicial process to his analysis, but discusses some unique aspects as well, such as Rutledge's habit of asking trusted law faculty members their opinions on issues before the court, and Rutledge's exhaustive preparation for writing opinions. The book also adds to our understanding of the personal interplay in that most bombastic of Supreme Courts, that chaired by Chief Justice Stone. Interspersed with the discussion of Court cases is additional biographical material relating to the Justice. Finally, the underlying research is simply awesome--truly a labor of love. While it is a very long book, if you are interested in Justice Rutledge or his period on the Court, it makes for indispensable reading. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars The First Complete Biography of Thurman Arnold
Thurman Arnold (1891-1969) is a rather interesting figure we don't hear much about today; those of us in Washington, however, are constantly reminded of him due to the "Thurman Arnold Building" which houses the law firm of Arnold & Porter. Until now, those interested in Arnold were limited to his autobiography ("Fair Fights and Foul") and a collection of his letters ("Voltaire and the Cowboy"). That limitation has now been corrected with the publication of this informative biography.

4-0 out of 5 stars Inspiring
The Attorney General is honest in sharing his Christian worldview and how it shapes his decisions. He takes readers through a chronology of his life, however he doesn't spend a lot of time on details. What he does is highlight the major impact his dad had on his life. A significant amount of the book discusses the principles he learned from his dad and how he applied them to his own life. This intangible legacy, the legacy of Christian faith is one that has cause him to say he cares more about his eternal reputation rather than his place in history (which is temporal). There are some mundane matters his dad passed on to him as well, such as suggesting that he always dress for a position above the one he currently held to create the proper image. Overall this book provides an insight into the thinking of the author.

1-0 out of 5 stars SCARY!!
This is a good primer on how to lie to the public and still try to look good.

1-0 out of 5 stars ...
I probably shouldn't publicly criticize the neo-J Edgar Hoover, but what the heck, I'm feeling brave! (kinda, since I clicked the anonymous button on my review!) This purpose of this review is to spark debate about the fusion of Jerry Falwell and J Edgar Hoover (as Julian Bond so eloquently put it), aka John Ashcroft. Scientists have successfully bonded religious fanaticism with Orwellian tactics. The result is our attny. general. A man who speaks at Bob Jones University, praising their "values" (segregation, racism, and general intolerance). Now don't get me wrong, he is allowed to believe whatever he wants to believe, he has that right as a citizen of the United States. But, his beliefs make him extremely bias, therefore should not be allowed to hold a position that requires TOTAL neutrality. (I know, Reno wasn't a star either in regards to Waco and Ruby Ridge, and the other Clinton DoJ foul ups). But the new DoJ is 10x worse. One of the most important (if not the most important) positions of power is that of Attorney General. This person holds OUR civil liberties in their hands, they are entrusted not to abuse the power given to them. Ashcroft has abused those powers. It may not seem like it right now, but history will look back on Ashcroft's actions and label him as a tyrant. What is scary is that he thinks he is right, that he has direct contact with God, and that he does God's bidding ... . Keep in mind that Ashcroft and Bin Laden are one in the same, both give their respective religions a bad name. Some non-Christian may hear Ashcroft spitting gross intolerances towards other cultures and think that all Christians are like him. Just as we see Bin Laden murder innocent civilians in the name of Islam, we think all Muslims are blood thirsty psychos. To those who share Ashcroft's beliefs, sorry to offend you, but people with your beliefs have no place in public service. As a free country we must keep zealots out of government. People with extreme (be it left of right) views have no right to dictate extreme policy to a public that is mostly moderate. That is called tyranny of the minority. Democracy rests on the principal of tyranny of the majority. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars From the 'Hood to the Hill
This is a fascinating book about an affable and intelligent man who overcame incredible odds. I tried to envision him as a bouncer on the Sunset Strip but could not. I've seen him speak and he was funny and witty, both traits sorely missing in our stiff Congress. Don't be surprised to see him back in action representing the OC in DC.

2-0 out of 5 stars Rogan and friends are total hypocrites
I lived across the hall from one of Rogan's "Mission buddies" for nearly a year in Culver City.
4-0 out of 5 stars Shades of greatness, but something was missing
On the whole, this was an awe-inspiring story, the type of rags to riches and pull yourself up by your bootstraps book that everybody can appreciate. Mr. Rogan spends far too long though discussing his bartending stories, and far too little time discussing the reasons I bought the book 1) To read more about his time in state government 2)to understand more compleatly the reasons when he became a Republican...his 'switch' was profound and I wanted to better understand how it came to happen and 3) more about his role in the impeachment hearings. On the plus side, the stories about how he became involved in politics and the people he met were frankly awe-inspiring. The world would be better served if more youngsters had a passion for politics like Rogan had. Solid beginning, okay middle, great close, gets this book a 4. ... Read more

Editorial Review

William Jennings Bryan is one of the most influential "failures" of American politics: a three-time Democratic nominee for president who, although he never won the office, transformed his party into an institution "pledged," in biographer Robert W. Cherny's words, "to use the power of government on behalf of those displaced and disadvantaged by the advance of industrialization and the emergence of corporate behemoths." Although he is best remembered for two events--his electrifying "cross of gold" speech at the 1896 Democratic convention and his work for the prosecution in the Scopes trial of 1925--his career was extremely rich in incident. Cherny draws amply upon Bryan's own writings and correspondence to produce a portrait of the lifelong political crusader that, while comparatively short in length, offers a substantial evaluation of his legacy. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars THE BOY ORATOR OF THE PLATTE
William Jennings Bryan is a rather interesting and paradoxical figure in American political history. In this man one can observe an apparently sincere political fighter who supported many progressive issues vital to the rural and urban working classes of the day, a vanishing type of politician, then as now. Although he was the Democratic Party candidate for President in 1896 I do not believe that party would be his home today, nor would his progressive politics resonant with the substance of Democratic politics today. It is odd that over a century later Bryan's politics would far to the left of what passes for the Democratic center today. At the same time we see the limits that even a sincerely religious man can bring to political discourse. His Christian fundamentalism never let him really fight to the end for the program of agrarian relief and industrial reform that he articulated so well.
4-0 out of 5 stars Solid
I agree with the gentleman from Missouri that no writer yet has fully evoked Bryan. This particular book covers his life well but without digging heavily into psychology and I'm fine with that. The film "Inherit the Wind" made far too much of the fictionalized Bryan's endless talking and eating in some ham-headed attempt to conjure up an oral fixation or something. In the late Fifties to mid-Sixties every socially conscious filmmaker was a psychologist. Today, the same can be said about biographers.
4-0 out of 5 stars A Short and Concise review of Bryan's Life
This brief, concise review of the life of William Jennings Bryan is a quick and easy way to familiarize yourself with this important American politician. While Bryan's only official politrical positions was as a two-term congressman and secretary of state for a little over two years, he was one of the most influential politicians for the thirty years he was active in Democratic politics. The three-time losing presidential candidate popularized (thought did not originate) many of the progressive issues of the period, championing many causes that eventually became law.Examples of this include the direct election of senators, the right to vote for women, and regulation of business and industry.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Fine Concise Biography of the Justice
Who better to write a short biography of Justice Holmes than the author of the virtually definitive major biography of the Justice, "Justice Oliver Wendell Holmes: Law and the Inner Self."This short biography is part of Oxford's "Lives and Legacies" series.I had some concern that the book would either be so short as to not really discuss much detail about Holmes, or that it would be so simplified for a more general audience as to lose the incisive vigor of White's previous books on Holmes.Happily, neither fear was confirmed: there is plenty of meat on the skeleton and, while White takes time to explain some key legal concepts for the non-specialist, his analysis still sparkles.

No one came out of the O.J. Simpson murder trial mess with colors flying higher than the lead defense attorney, Johnnie Cochran, and no book from the key figures in the trial could be expected to shed more light on the successful defense strategy than Cochran's. Cochran, however, has chosen to write a pious, slippery memoir whose passages on his boyhood in Shreveport, Louisiana, are much more compelling than those on the trial itself. Cochran's charisma and his preacher's voice are on display here, as is his bitterness toward Christopher Darden, Robert Shapiro, his ex-wife, and just about anyone else who crossed or disbelieved him during his most famous case. ... I read this book a few years ago.I was very intrigued about Mr. Cochran especially after the O.J. Simpson trial. This book is awesome and so is Johnnie Cochran!!The racism he had to put up with, as well as the numerous times he confronted the L.A.P.D.!!He lays it on the line about himself, his life and his growth. If you liked the man, you'll love him after reading this book.If you don't know the man, you'll gain the greatest respect for him after reading this book!!

to my grandmother, a native New Yorker who knew Judge Crater's wife, Stella. She devoured it and can't stop talking about it.

4-0 out of 5 stars We no longer need to wonder ; "where is Judge Crater"?
This was an intriguing story about a colorful character from one of the most interesting periods in our history.Forty pages from the end the New York Daily News ran an article possibly solving the mystery. That made the read all the more riveting.A must read (esp.when accom. by the updates to the story ) for all 20th century U.S. history buffs.

1-0 out of 5 stars Barely Mentions Judge Crater
Judge Crater left a New York restaurant on the evening of August 6, 1930 and was never seen again. A female friend who was there with him disappeared several weeks later. He'd been a judge for just three months. The problem with the book is the author is not interested in this mystery; he really wants to write about Tammany Hall and that's what he devotes almost the entire book to, apparently citing Crater only to lure in readers. I felt ripped off. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars disregard the marketing-focus on the first-rate war stories
John Tucker offers a wealth of tactical insights gleaned from an impressive career as a litigator, mixing the pathos of legal practice for good causes with the legal theories deployed on behalf of a wide array of clients.
5-0 out of 5 stars An extraordinary insight into the law and lawyers
For any who lack faith in the America's legal system or think all lawyers are worthy subjects of jokes, Tucker's book is the proverbial lightbulb in the cave. Tucker recounts his journey through a lengthy career as a trial lawyer and along the way demonstrates that our judicial system, while short of perfect, is still the best in the world. Tucker helped the poor, the wealthy, the politically powerful and powerless and the reviled through the judicial system. Some cases he won; some he lost.5-0 out of 5 stars A PRIMER ON THE LAW....FOR EVERYONE
Twenty-one different courtroom cases are covered in this book by a most successful attorney who has his head on straight; by that I mean he mixes the intricacies of the law with living a "normal" life.He certainly puts in long hours in preparation, but that goes along with his job.The author states, "In the American Legal System, a lawyer's job is not to seek justice, but to win the case for his client."He relates many interesting cases, but two exceptional ones are defending a rapist who is truly mentally defective and one about defending the "Chicago Eight" in 1968.A lot of detailed information about that political incident is fascinating.Mr. Tucker does a lot of pro bono work and one of this type was defending the Contract Buyers League in Chicago...a race conflict of great proportions.Fine writing delineates complex legal cases that are most understandable. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars A Must Read
Meltsner's THE MAKING OF A CIVIL RIGHTS LAWYER is a powerful and timely book.It should be "required reading" for those of us who came of political age in the early sixties (that time of hope) and for all of us who now watch--helplessly and hoplessly--the corrupt, methodical erosion of those truths we hold to be self evident.

5-0 out of 5 stars Portrait of An Age
This is a first-rate read. The book is a biography no so much of a "civil rights lawyer" as of a critical period in US history--the coming of age of the Civil Rights movement. With the inside stories Meltsner provides, we see the exacting day to day (and night) work of people struggling for the rights of all of us. The bad guys are even worse than we thought--the good guys, in government, not nearly as good as we thought.

5-0 out of 5 stars An honest lawyer?
Are you one of the millions who think there is no such thing as an honest lawyer who cares more for righteousness, reason, and reality than for process, payoff, and power? You'd be wrong. Shelly Waxman was a made man, an insider who had only to protect the powerful and sacrifice the expendable to become a highly placed Federal lawyer, perhaps someday a judge.Instead he blew the whistle on prejudice, corruption, and even murder taking place behind the bar, for which act of justice he was thrown from the halls of power. Eschewing the paneled office, the Armani and the Rolex, and the favor of such luminaries as the paranoid J.Edgar Hoover, Shelly devoted himself to defending the truth. This book is not a tale of only one such courageous act, but of many such cases, some you will recognize from the front pages of the last thirty years of our history."In The Teeth Of The Wind" reads like pulp fiction, exciting and surprising, with a cast of quirky characters, but it is all true.If you care about the degeneration of the American system of justice, and you would like to know about one man's lifelong struggle to keep it the honorable institution it was created to be, then put this book in your shopping cart now.

A captivating truly exhilirating book.Full of all kinds of fascinating details about Marshall's upbringing, his years as a litigator, and his judicial career.Truly captures the essence of a man who was irreverent, down to earth, compassionate, and fully committed to his cause.Demonstrates the numerous ways in which Marshall's achievements have made life better for all American's.More entertaining than a work of fiction.Made me want to read Rowan's other books.
