5-0 out of 5 stars Terrific
In another sterling volume of the Leaders in Action series, Stephen Mansfield here outlines the life and character of Booker T. Washington. In vivacious voice and moving magniloquence, Mansfield traces Washington's path from slavery to his founding of Tuskegee Institute. He shows the difficulties Washington surpassed in reaching his goals, and the principles that helped him make it. In the words of Washington, "Success is to be measured not so much by the position that one has reached in life as by the obstacles which he has overcome while trying to succed." By this standard, Booker T. Washington was an astonishingly successful man.5-0 out of 5 stars Outstanding biography of an outstanding Black American.
Then Darkness Fled is a celebration of the life of Booker T. Washinghton and tells of a man who dined with heads of state and became the first Afro-American to receive honorary degrees from Harvard and Dartmouth.Chapters survey both his achievements and his life in this lively coverage. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars A fascinating book of an academic pioneer and his work
Seeing Language In Sign: The Work Of William C. Stokoe by Jane Maher (Assistant Professor, Basic Education Program, Nassau Community College, Garden City, New York) is an informed and informative examination of the life and ground breaking work of William Stokoe, the man who dared to challenge the commonly held belief that sign language is not a true "language" in and of itself. Stokoe's study and intense research into the beauty, complexity, and linguistic formatives of what would come to be called American Sign Language forever transformed how the linguistic community would view the language of the deaf. A fascinating book of an academic pioneer and his work, Seeing Language In Sign is a highly recommended and invaluable addition to Linguistic Studies supplemental reading lists and academic reference collections.

5-0 out of 5 stars Seeing Language in Sign
Seeing Language in Sign, by Jane Maher, held my attention to the last page.It is a true story about one of the most influencial hearing individuals in Deaf Society.William Stokoe was a true hero in his brilliance, committment and sacrifices to bring the true nature of American Sign Language to light. His story is inspiring and infuriating, as the reader learns of the obsticles placed in Stokoe's way as he strove to prove that ASL is a true language, full of all the richness and bredth of any spoken language. I was moved to tears several times and as I read the last page I wanted to meet this incredible man in person. The author wrote in such a manner that I felt as though I knew him personally. In my opinion, he deserves the Nobel Prize in Education. This book is a MUST READ for anyone who is serious about understanding ASL and Deaf Culture. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Gratuated from Penn Grad school during his reign
Education, street smart (partially due to his street friends of youth), networking ability, social skills, socializing selectively among the most influential, are contributors to this author's achievements in life thus far.
5-0 out of 5 stars An improbable Yet Authentic Armenian-American Success Story
Vartan Gregorian's autobiographic tract,"A Road to Home," tells an extraordinary story. It is the quintessential American Success Story. Here is an Armenian immigrant who comes from a village in Northern Iran, with his high school education completed in Jemaran, the Armenian School of considerable note in Beirut, who earns a BA and a PhD from Stanford (in history, specialty: Afghanistan), teaches at San Francisco State and UT, Austin, ends up being Dean, Provost and almost the President of U. Penn., rescues and forges the renaissance of the New York City public library system from imminent disaster by taking over as president for eight years, becomes the president of Brown University for the next nine years and along the way, turns down the Chancellorship of UC Berkeley, the Presidency of Columbia Univ., Univ. of Miami, Univ. of Michigan, Univ. of Rochester and many others, before becoming president of the Carnegie Corporation.
5-0 out of 5 stars Gregorian is enchanting in this delightful memoir
I first learned of Vartan Gregorian when he became provost of the University of Pennsylvania while I was attending grad school there. He was a colorful figure who seemed to be as much at odds with the university as the contentious students during the turbulent late 70's. Later, he went on to head the New York Public Library and then Brown University. He seemed to have a magical way to become influential and well-liked. After reading this book, I liked him a lot and wished I'd had a chance to know him while I was at Penn. Gregorian is a man of letters and great charisma.

3-0 out of 5 stars Pleasant, but very light
This was a strange read, because the author continually expresses her surprise for certain techniques and methods of the book conservators craft as she discovers them during her early learning and apprenticeship.I find this odd, as I've done a bit of self-taught bookbinding, and have encountered most of this knowledge through reading, and that the author purports to be a reader and decent student.
5-0 out of 5 stars accessible, delicate, honest
Wilcox artfully narrates her experience as an apprentice for Bill Anthony, a famous book binder and conservator. She artfully interspeses observations about books she is restoring with phases of her life as an apprentice and other texts. She evokes the spirit of craftmanship, of taking many years, much time, and much patience to develop mastery of her craft.Great for book art students, art students, or those considering an apprenticeship of any kind.Of particular interest to those who've made books before, because they will understand vividly the technical descriptions of her project (thought these are accessible to the lay person as well).

5-0 out of 5 stars Illuminations
Someone who knew that I was in the Interdisciplinary Book and Paper MFA program at Columbia College Chicago gave this memoir to me. It's a really nice read---especially since the bookbinding world is a small one, and everyone in it knows everyone else, as people travel around the country giving workshops. Always interesting to read about people who you've had as teachers. I found it very well written, an evocative and accurate depiction of an obscure art/craft/lifestyle choice, an illuminated window into a small, specialized world. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Powerful
Thomas Sowell's autobiography is powerfully written, insightful, and a great American story.Dr. Sowell doesn't box himself into any category, but shows himself to be a free thinker and independent spirit.I couldn't put this book down (reading it at 3 a.m.).
5-0 out of 5 stars The Making of a Hero
Like anyone who would bother to read an autobiography on someone like Thomas Sowell I am obviously a huge fan of the man. Throughout the years I have found his books and articles not only informative on a variety of topics but also personally instructive into a style of thinking and analysis that I've tried to adopt in my day-to-day life. Dr. Sowell has helped make me much smarter than I actually am.
5-0 out of 5 stars THREE CHEERS
My current favorite Sowell-saying is, `Reality constrains them' (in `Basic Economics', early on). Although long a well-known US economist, Thomas Sowell has little profile in the UK, but having read the aforementioned excellent and eye-opening `Basic Economics' (through a recommendation on my favorite radio show), and having picked up a few morsels on the Stanford University Hoover Institution site, I just had to read this autobiography - it is more a series of life snapshots really - and also to order a few more of his works, of which I have the highest hopes. He is a man with a steely grasp of certain realities. Born in North Carolina, he grew up poor but not unhappy, and moved a few hundred miles north to New York. By the age of twelve he was beginning to show his ability in school. He was the first black boy to be sent to a certain summer camp, and they got him there by telling him there would be other black kids. His comment: `It was...my first encounter with the notion that people who think they are doing something noble don't have to tell the truth.' (p.25). That's Socialism for you.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Wonderful Effort at Resurrecting a Great Founding Father
I found this fantastic book on the clearance stack at Border's.I became aware of Webster's importance from references to him in other books on the Founding Fathers. However, it wasn't until I read Unger's work that I fully appreciate how important Webster really was.Soon after graduating from Yale, the Connecticut native embarked on a lifelong dream of improving the educational system of the fledgling country to both unify it and to instill the young with the moral and intellectual virtues necessary to maintain a free republic.
5-0 out of 5 stars An outstanding biography
This is an outstanding biography of a person who, because he never held high political office, is less well known than he deserves to be.In reading about Webster's life, one also learns much about the politicalcontroversies of the early United States--how many know, for example, thatGeorge Washington had bitter political enemies while President, or that theWar of 1812 was so unpopular in New England that it prompted many there(including Webster) to discuss seceding from the Union? This biographydeserves to be widely read.

5-0 out of 5 stars Engrossing and enlightening
In his preface, the author notes that Noah Webster is so famous for his dictionary that it's overshadowed his many other achievements. Too true! I was amazed to learn of Mr. Webster's achievements in politics and educationreform, particularly the influential role he played in shaping the U.S.Constitution. This book is a Must Read for anyone who wants a deeper andmore accurate view into early American history. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Don't bother, Michael Landon fans.
As a Michael Landon fan, I was totally disappointed in this book.Cheryl is riding on her father's name here. Her philosophy in this book has nothing to do with Michael Landon's legacy. After all the research I've done on him, I think he'd be disappointed with her far-fetched ideas. If this is the way she wants to live and believe, fine:If she wants to write a book about it, fine. But don't attribute it to Michael.
