4-0 out of 5 stars A Good Book But I Prefer Jack's Own
I bought this book before reading Jack's "Straight from the Gut". When I read this book I thought it was 5 stars and I re-read this book at least once looking for clues to help my own business. Then I read Jack's book and realized his was better. In any case this covers all the basic aspects of Jack's methods including the educational meetings at the GE "university", cleaning house, picking winning companies, eliminating small market share companies, and promoting top performers and eliminating underperformers. It shows how he is hands on.
2-0 out of 5 stars Disappointing
When I read a book I expect to learn something I don't already know or at least revisit something I already know from a new perspective or explain it in a uniquely articulate way. This book fails on all three measures.Walsh shares no secret insights -- he only discusses his introduction of a number of standard business practices to GE.This include 6-Sigma, downsizing, A-B-C rating of managers, etc.-- The usual mix of management science, art and business fad typical in pop management books. And even the discussions of how these management tools were implemented at GE is filled with extrainious details about the meetings at which these policies were introduced and other non-value added story telling. This only leads me to believe that it was added as filler to get the page count up to the size required for a book.
2-0 out of 5 stars Author Paid By The Word
Good overview of the Jack Welch way, including a variety of innovative business ideas that brought GE forward.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A fitting tribute to one of the greatest thinkers of all time
Anyone who has taken a course in macroeconomics knows who Keynes is. Economics is full of camps, conflicting doctrines, feuds, rivalries, etc. Keynes was unique in that, unlike other economists who are indoctrinated or are in love with a theory, he was never scared of giving up an idea that did not work. If one was to read his "Tract on Monetary Reform" one might be fooled into thinking that it was Milton Friedman that was writing and not the J.M Keynes who revolutionized economic thought with his General Theory. This pragmatism is what sets Keynes apart from every other economist. But why Keynes was so different from others is something students never learn. This biography does an admirable job of tracing Keynes' upbringing, his education, career, and contributions in the light of circumstances that Keynes lived through and shaped his ideas. It is also full of nuggets about Keynes' idiosyncracies which humanizes the biography and shows the real person behind the aura. The book is long, but 63 years of action-packed life requires such detail. The Chinese say, May we live in interesting times. Keynes certainly lived in interesting times with the result that this book is just as interesting.

4-0 out of 5 stars An excellent,nontechnical biography of J M Keynes
This book is Skidelsky's one volume abridged version of his previous three volume biography(1983,1992,2000)on J M Keynes.Skidelsky successfully weaves all of the different aspects and strands(personal, familial, historical, social, political, economic) of Keynes's life into a beautifully constructed historical tapestry that will keep the reader's attention from the first page to the last. All of the different talents Keynes possessed and displayed during his lifetime come alive on the pages of this book.Skidelsky is the master of his material as long as he concentrates on the vast nontechnical aspects of the life of his subject.Skidelsky has clearlymastered the historical and chronological events and interrelationships that occurred during Keynes's life.Unfortunately,Skidelsky does not have the necessary formal training in mathematics, logic, statistics or probability in order to properly understand or assess any of those parts of Keynes's scholarship that involves the use of formal logical and mathematicalmethods or analysis. These technical deficiencies in Skidelsky'sacademic training arethe maindefect, not only in this book but in the entire corpus of Skidelsky's writings on Keynes going back over 30 years.I will concentrate on Skidelsky's error filled statements concerning Keynes's A Treatise on Probability(1921;TP) and the logical theory of probability. On p.95,Skidelsky conflates the principle of indifference(poi) with the principle of insufficient reason. They are not the same.Keynes's poi requires a balance or symmetry of the relevant, available evidence or factors involved before equiprobabilities are assigned. The poi can't be applied if there is no relevant evidence.Advocates of the principle of insufficient reason,on the other hand, argue that equiprobabilities can be applied in states where no relevant evidence exists.Keynes always rejected this kind of reasoning.Skidelsky bases his assessment of Keynes's logical theory of probability on the error filled work of A. Carabelli and R.O'Donnell.Carabelli and O'Donnell base their assessments of the TP on four sources:1)Keynes's introductory guide to the measurement of probability in chapter III of the TP;2)F. Ramsey's 1922 book review of the TP in The Cambridge Magazine;3)F.Ramsey's 1926 book review of the TP in his article,"Truth and Probability",published in 1931 in a book of articles;and 4)Keynes's 4 page eulogy and very brief review of the book in 1931.In chapter III,Keynes had already made it clear to the alert reader, who had a mind of his/her own (and would not ape the preposterous ,nonsensical claims made by F. Ramsey that by nonnumerical and nonmeasurable Keynes meant that numbers could not be used in general to estimate probabilities,i.e.,that Keynesian probabilities were like a surveyor assigning nonnumerical heights to a mountain hidden in the mist)that the vast majority of Keynesian probabilities used in common discourse were/are interval estimates.John Maynard Keynes is the originator and founder of the interval estimate approach to probability.Keynes spells it out in a number of places in the TP:"...we judge that the probability of the actual argument lies between these two(numbers;reviewers note).Since our standards, therefore, are referred to numerical measures in many cases where actual measurement is impossible, and since the probability lies BETWEEN(Keynes's emphasis)two numerical measures..."(1921,p.32).After warning the reader not to reach any conclusions based on chapter III alone until after Part II of the TP was reached(p.37),Keynes gives his definition of nonnumerical in chapter 15 of Part II on p.160 of the TP.On pp.161-163 and pp.186-194(ch.17),Keynes presents his approximation approach .It has nothing to do with ordinal rankings(see Skidelsky's queer claims on pp.284-285,for instance). An upper bound and a lower bound are specified for some 13 worked out probability problems. One of these problems(a revision of Boole's problem 10)is then made the foundation for Part III of the TP.Part III is then made the logical foundation for Part V. Carabelli's and O'Donnell's "reading" of Keynes's TP is very poor,at best.Skidelsky's conclusions, based on their very poor reading, are very poor.Skidelsky also appears to have been misled by Richard Kahn and Joan Robinson into believing that Keynes was a strictly literary economist, who was a poor mathematician by 1927. Supposedly,Keynes had never taken the twenty minutes that was necessary to understand the theory of value(microeconomics).Based on these bizarre beliefs,Skidelsky comes to the queer conclusion that Keynes deliberately refused to present any formal mathematical model of his general theory in the General Theory(1936;GT).Any mathematically trained reader can find Keynes's completely worked out model, with the results presented in the form of elasticities so that a reader of the GT can compare Keynes's results with those of A C Pigou,in chapters 19,20,and 21 of the GT.Keynes then compares and contrasts his model with Pigou's model, who had also presented his results in the form of elasticities, in the appendix to chapter 19 of the GT.A technically trained economist should purchase a copy of the GT instead of this book. ... What you typically hear about Victor Niederhoffer is that he trades for "the great Soros," that he doesn't wear shoes in his office, that the only newspaper he reads is the National Enquirer, and that a picture of the Titanic hangs in his office. Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A fun and educational read
It's not surprising that this guy blew out his hedge fund when you read the "slice of life" recounts of what his trading was like. You get the feel that he was always on the edge, leveraged to the max, one sudden market surge away from bankruptcy every time he was in a trade. I don't know how true to reality those descriptions are, but they make for some great reading. I wonder if he really had a bum sleeping in his closet that helped him enter and liquidate large currency positions?
5-0 out of 5 stars Best book on investing
I avoided this book for months. It sat on the shelf at my library, but I ignored it. "I don't want to be a speculator. I don't even want to be a trader! I want to be an investor."
3-0 out of 5 stars Investment advice from a Nutcase may well be
the first thought entering your mind when you start reading this book. But there is a bit more to it. Vic Niederhoffer (VN) takes you fairly quickly through his childhood into his investment career. For the rest of the book he refers back to his childhood and teenager experiences and other mind-blowing events and how those shaped his investment acumen. I liked the chapter on the nature of games. I also found the chapter on essential board games (checkers in VN's case) quite excellent, especially the `Rules of the Game' and there especially `The character of a winner' because it struck me as a good blueprint for a good investor. Similarly, to others here, I did wonder if VN follows his own advice. His description often struck me as if he trades at the top of his mind rather than following any strategy at all. This book was published back in 1998 and you should not have found it too difficult to make some money in `the markets' since. If you haven't you ought to read this book again and even if it is not a terrible good guide and how to make money, there are one or two pieces of advice you may find useful. Besides, it is an amusing read. ... Read more

Damn Right
4-0 out of 5 stars Insightful!
Charlie Munger's life story is a version of the classic American Dream: a hard-working young man builds a billion-dollar fortune through hard work and honest business deals, all the while raising eight children with the help of an intelligent, devoted wife. Author Janet Lowe brings this story and Munger's personality to life with well-chosen anecdotes from family, friends and business associates. These include, most notably, Warren Buffett, with whom she already enjoyed a rapport thanks to her work on a previous bestseller, Warren Buffett Speaks. Because Munger's business history is so complex, the chapters are organized thematically rather than strictly chronologically, which can be a bit confusing. Thankfully, Lowe provides a handy timeline in an appendix. We suggest this book to investors, Buffett fans (who may underestimate the contributions others such as Munger have made to the Berkshire Hathaway empire) and to those dismayed by corporate corruption who could use this tale of honest success to renew their faith in capitalism. ... This book was very good.It encouraged people to respect each person as an individual and help them build ownership and self respect in their work ethics. It also shared the rewarding value of performing service and giving credit where credit is due.

5-0 out of 5 stars Very Motivational
Great reading and very inspirational. God is a wonderful business partner. My husband serves on our city council and recieved this book as a gift from the mayor of our town. My husband, after reading it and enjoying it so much, ordered this book for all our store managers(we are self employed). All our managers have found it to be great reading and inspirational as well.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good story for good people
This was a fun read and a nice story about a guy and his family who kept working and stuck to their principles and succeeded. I dont know if there are a lot of lessons on business here other than work hard, do good and treat people right which of course is enough in most cases. But enjoyed the book and its nice when nice people make it and not the bums at the top of most of Americas so called 'top companies'. Worth the price and your time. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars BREEZY, DOWN TO EARTH, AND BURSTING WITH DISH !

5-0 out of 5 stars Intelligent, funny, logical and honest narrative
i deplore fashion and beauty magazines and I have never read Lucky- haven't read Elle in years- so I am in the minority of readership. However, I liked the sidebars especially, finding them full of practical information. As well, the dishy gossip on corporate politics a la fashion- I thought were very realistic without being cynical or cliched. The writer seems down to earth and perceptive, and funny and warm. I breezed right through the book and may just become a fan. the beauty business is HUGE and nary a modern woman of any ilk can be considered on the sidelines- everyone brushes their teeth, washes their face and hair- this is not an elite category- Indeed the items needed for absolute basic items constitute a hefty enough portion of take home pay and information is power- we need "scientists" like the author to navigate through the aisles of the real world

3-0 out of 5 stars It Must Be Nice...
...to be this author.Godfrey-June's book starts strongly, with a brisk introduction to her Devil-Wears-Prada-ish experiences at Elle magazine. The dishiness wears off, however, when the author goes on about her reluctantly privileged lifestyle in her yuppie-hippy town. And a privileged lifestyle it is, with all of the free products, fashion shows, etc.(Instead of bemoaning the hundreds of beauty products that clutter their homes, why don't beauty editors donate unwanted things to a local women's shelter?)This book is a fun read for fans of Lucky magazine, and the book definitely promotes the magazine. The sidebars are actually fun additions to her book, and her writing style is fresh and casual.Overall, a fine beach or bus book; something to breeze through and return to the library or pass on to someone else.

3-0 out of 5 stars Joe Volpe: The Good and the Bad
I saw and heard Volpe talk about his book in Philadelphia a few days before reading "The Toughest Show on Earth." Volpe was charming, funny with a hint of acid during the interview. Well into the Q&A with the audience, a well dressed man asked Volpe about his dealings with agents. A different Volpe immediately appeared. He never looked at the questioner, asked him if he was an agent (no, lawyer) and was very flip in his non answer. I wasn't surprised that Volpe had that side to his personality; he needed it to run the Met. I was shocked that Volpe felt so comfortable showing it in public.
5-0 out of 5 stars Part autobiography, part history of the Met, and part stories about the performers
Opera is dramatic and bigger than life on stage and back stage. Now we learn about all the drama that also goes on in managing the Metropolitan Opera, the largest opera company in the world and an arts organization that puts on more opera performances each year than any other company on earth. Its budget is more than $200 million for something like 240 performances per year.I was quite surprised to read how the monies to fund this huge budget are raised. No, it isn't the government, corporate, or even the richest donors that provide the bulk of the money as I had suspected.
5-0 out of 5 stars The House of Diva
Joseph Volpe's "The Toughest Show on Earth" is a remarkably comprehensive look at the recent history of the Metropolitan Opera as told through the eyes of the retiring general manager, himself. Volpe has the best "view" in the house and no wonder...he's been there for over forty years.

Not the most exciting book out there. But if you like minor league baseball, this book's worth a quick read.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great topic, mediocre writing = a fascinating book
Despite the fact that the book seems quickly written and is organized rather poorly, Jerry Crasnick offers a fascinating study of the sports agent's life."License to Deal" causes one to root for the up-and-coming agents and against the behemoths, like Scott Boras, that control so many of the top free agents in baseball.

Few biographers convey their subjects' business abilities and personalities with equal acuity, but Washington-based journalist Christopher Ogden has done just that in this accomplished portrait of Moses Annenberg (1877-1942) and his son, Walter. Depicting Prussian-born Moe's rise in American publishing, Ogden captures the innovative circulation gimmicks and bare-knuckled competitive tactics that fueled the success of newspapers like the Read more

Legacy does an accurate job of portraying POP the way he wanted it and believe me, he certainly controlled the content. As one who is most familiar as an insider, I can say that his goal was to build the image of greatness.Yes, Pop, you were great and no matter what the cost.In the end you won. To the family, you know how he was. Gbird if you get this, im still here, faithful as ever, yet still controlled by old walter from the grave.

Ascoli (an academician and the grandson of Julius Rosenwald) is the definitive biography of Rosenwald, a pioneer not only in transforming Sears, Roebuck into the greatest mail-order firm in the world, but also in philanthropy. He helped build more than 5,300 schools in the American South, among other efforts to improve the lives of his fellow citizens such as the Rosenwald Fund. Exhaustively researched and packed cover to cover with minute detail, Julius Rosenwald is highly recommended reading given its author's considerable accomplishments in business and humanitarian spheres alike.
5-0 out of 5 stars A book that needed to be written
This is a fascinating book about a man who was a well-known business man and philanthropist in his day and is all but unheard of today. In his well-researched and interestingly written account of Julius Rosenwald, Peter Ascoli vividly portrays a man who was ambitious, idealistic, groundbreaking in many ways, and humble. While JR, as the author calls him, is known mainly for his excellent management and leadership at Sears, it was his philanthropy that made JR stand out.In these days of the super rich, business scandals such as Enron, and Warren Buffet's recent gift to the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, this story of an upstanding business man with morals, and a humble philanthropist this is biography is extremely relevent, and it is a story that needed to be told. ... Editorial Review

Michael Lewis was supposed to be writing about how Jim Clark, the founder of Silicon Graphics and Netscape, was going to turn health care on its ear by launching Healtheon, which would bring the vast majority of the industry's transactions online. So why was he spending so much time on a computerized yacht, each feature installed because, as one technician put it, "someone saw it on Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Classic Michael Lewis on Silicon Valley
If you have read any of Michael Lewis's other books and found them enjoyable (either writing style or topic), you will find this a good read, worthy of your time. You will learn a little about the atmosphere of Silicon Valley during the height of the bubble / late 90s as well as about a very unique figure who helped (over exagerated, per Economist) start it all.

4-0 out of 5 stars How Silicon Valley Was Built and the Next Gen Entrepreneur!
A must read for any entrepreneur or intrapreneur(someone within a company who must innovate). Lewis opens with stories about Jim Clark -- reknown Silicon Valley entrepreneur and innovatorand his boat that 'built Netscape"...the book talks about Netscape which Lewis says launched the Information age (it may or may not have but it certainly ushered in the IPO era and online businesses. Interesting what has since happened to Silicon Graphics and Healtheon that was supposed to turn the health care industry 'on it's head'. The inside cover talks about --- what else-- Paradigm shift in American culture-- from conventional business models (the old economy) to the new economy. Yet in retrospect we know that a mix of the best of both is really probably the way to go. The titles of the chapter are more clever than the chapters themselves. I personally would have liked to see more about different innovators not just Clarke but then I didn't write the book. The chapter titles include "Pasts in a Box" Disorganization Man, Home of the Future God Mode -- How Chickents Become Pork, Cheese Sandwiches for Breakfast, Chasing Ghosts, The Turning Point and The New New Thing....

5-0 out of 5 stars A Fascinating Insight into Silicon Valley
The July 1999 issue of Forbes magazine makes the astonishing observation that there are now 465 people who have a billion or more dollars. Incredibly, as this book notes, there are an estimated 180,000 Americans who are deca-millionaires (over ten million dollars in assets). An inventor or entrepreneur, upon reading these statistics, may note that not only has a great amount of wealth been created, but that it is not in the hands of just a handful of people.

1-0 out of 5 stars It's easy to think like a billion-aire ... if you are one.
I did pick up a couple of tib-bits and a few interesting facts from this book. You too will learn a lot about "The Donald" and how a billion-aire thinks, and when you're a billion-aire you can think like one. Don't expect to become a billion-aire by reading this book, but if you're really lucky you might become a hundred-aire.

1-0 out of 5 stars Not very interesting.I was expecting more from Mr. Trump
The book is way to shallow and doesnt offer any depth of advice for how to think like a billionaire. Its really a poor product that I would suggest not purchasing.

4-0 out of 5 stars AGreat Gameplan!
Mr. Trump delivers, once again! He makes complex subjects simple and easy to follow. All who are looking for a blueprint to success should follow his gameplan.

5-0 out of 5 stars A treasure-trove of information
This book is a treasure-trove of information. It is not only an in depth analysis of Robert Moses a study of Belle Moskowitz, Nelson Rockefellar, Al Dewey, Fiorella Laguardia, FDR and others.
4-0 out of 5 stars required reading in our house
"Robert Moses, he was a great man may he rot in hell," is a common expression in New York, especially for those New Yorkers who lived through his nearly 50-year reign as a never-elected public servant of the City. From the Triborough and Verrazano Bridges, to the city and state parkways, the famous Jones Beach (and its complete inaccessibility to public transportation, thanks to Moses' conscious decision to build overpasses too low to allow buses to get there) and the displacement of nearly 100,000 New Yorkers in the Bronx to build an expressway, not to mention both the 1939 and 1964 World's Fairs, Robert Moses left a mark more permanent in New York City than any mayor or developer in his time. For anyone who wonders how cities are built - and how opportunities to make them even more livable are lost - The Power Broker is a must-read.

5-0 out of 5 stars Monster of NY
Having read Caro's books on LBJ, I just had to read this Pulitzer Prize winning bio.I was not disappointed.Dare I say Moses was New York City's own little Hitler! There isvery little to admire about this man who tore great holes in NYC and catered to the rich.Read how he made sure that the overpasses that ran over the parkways that he built were made intentionally too low for busses to pass under. In doing that he insured that only those who could afford a car could get to his wonderful beaches. He also destroyed neighborhoods and people.Blind with ambition he only cared about building monuments to himself. You will not beleive how he stole power in NY and became the most powerful man in this country - even Roosevelt was beholden to him.He personally held the purse strings to the largest sums of money in the State and probably the nation. But it is a great story and well written. If you live and work in NYC you should not miss this one. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Book
I loved this book. Very neat in learning the family history of the Coors, their role in politics and how all this was reflected in their family brewery business. I would recommend this book to my family and friends.

5-0 out of 5 stars Fascinating tale of one of America's most hated corporations
That you can walk into just about any convenience store in America today and find Coors Light on the shelf should be considered one of the great miracles of modern business. 5-0 out of 5 stars Facinating!
Even tho' this is a business book, I found it hard to put down. The author writes in such away as told hold you spellbound to see what the next gaff the Coors family will make. I found that while Coors made a superb beer, they were clueless to the realities of contemperary marketing, and image building. They were lucky to survive. The book made me want to get an update on the brewers current status! Very enjoyable!! ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars I wonder if reviewers really read the book?
Do the reviewers on here really read the books? One reviewer abovestated that Katherine Graham found her husband after he had hanged himself. No, she found him after he had shot himself. This is no small point, as later in the book, she reveals how hurt she was by a sign carried in an anti-Post parade during the newspaper strike that read, "Phil shot the wrong Graham."This is a fascinating book, and anyone posting a review of it on a forum like this should at least give it the respect of getting the basic facts straight.

5-0 out of 5 stars What a wonderful combination of substance and opportunity!
Since I grew up in a house where the "Washington Post" was devoured daily, I was always aware of Katherine Graham.I read this book shortly after she passed away, and I was knocked off my feet.
