5-0 out of 5 stars An Excellent Life Story
This book is a joy to read. George Elsey has told the story of his experiences with clarity and continuity that makes history reading fun. The word serendipity came to mind numerous times while George relates the fortuitous events in his life. He does not belabor the reader with oft-told events that are common knowledge. His narrative style paints a vivid picture of how important and significant world affairs melded together through the 40s, 50s and 60s. Persons who also grew up in this time-frame will immediately relate to the events. George Mckee Elsey still exhibited his sharpness of mind during a recent radio program on NPR called, The Book Guys.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great
George Elsey was one of the architects of Truman's upset of 1948. Truman even predicted the outcome some weeks before the election to Elsey and Elsey put the prediction in a safe place. Truman was a little optimistic, but he really defied the odds and the bookmakers in Nevada by beating Tom Dewey.
5-0 out of 5 stars A Great Insider View
While the title of this book could fit most of our lives, most of us do not get to go to Princeton, and then assigned to work in the White House through World War II and beyond.

5-0 out of 5 stars Shockingly candid
I have not read that many books about Elvis Presley, but I do consider myself an Elvis fan.Joe Esposito is more candid about Elvis' affairs with women than I had expected of him.You do realize that Elvis was flawed, but only because he was human. There were parts of the book that were almost shocking.Joe even talks briefly about some of Elvis' sexual practices. He picks up, in detail, about the very night he met Elvis and travels on to the day Elvis died, which is also in detail.Joe talks about the funeral arrangements and how he was in on the cover-up about the drugs.Among all the hundreds of books about Elvis, this one is worth the read. You just cannot dismiss Joe Esposito. He was really and truly as close to Elvis as anyone ever was.Joe has probably more first hand knowledge of Elvis than anyone.

I have read many Elvis books and really liked this one it gives you an inside look into the life of Elvis and the guys around him. i thought Joe was very honest in telling the story. i also liked the fact that this book tells what happened the day elvis died. it really is a great read if you are an elvis fan. good job joe i loved it! ... Finding out about someone by reading their correspondence is a fundamentally different thing than reading their biography. Letters offer both more intimacy with the subject and at the same time a crucial distance--the exact distance the letter-writer intended from the people to whom he was writing. In Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Hey, part of it is missing!!!
The Augustine part is fine and the translator did a wonderful job, but why were the parts edited out? Saint Augustine was just like us in his struggles to not only come to Christianity but also to live the Christian life after his conversion. He writes about his screw-ups, failures, and triumphs in such a humble, heart rendering manner I wish I had articulated it that way first. All Christians should have this book in their library to be read and re-read often. PAX, bb

5-0 out of 5 stars Unique look into a brilliant mind
The Confessions offer a deep look into St. Augustine's mind as he battles through questions about time and memory. It is, quite personally, an account of a once atheist who, through tragedy and an insatiable desire for truth, becomes spiritually connected to God. Augustine presents age old questions about existence and purpose, and provides his own unique and intelligent viewpoint. Augustine's confessions are uplifting to read through, and his gentle and eloquent praises to God are remarkably written. I gave this book five stars, in light of its uniqueness and the personal betterment I felt when I read it.

4-0 out of 5 stars A Niche Version of Primarily Devotional Interest
I, with other reviewers, was deeply disappointed to find that this book (purchased elsewhere) was an undisclosed abridged version of Augustine's work and had to re-acquire it.There is no excuse for omitting this fact everywhere but a brief mention in the forward.(Note: this is the reason for 4 *'s as I'd never be so presuptuous to give Augustine less than 5)The text is of little value for historical interest. There is no mention of his concubine and even the famous pear trauma of his youth is omitted. It is worth noting, however, what is included. In a very readable "translation," is much of his devotional prose and repeated prayers of exaltation, self evaluation and gratitude. So, despite my disappointment, I have actually started recommending this text for those who do not have a philosophical, theological or historical interest in the great church father but would be interested in exploring his writings devotionally. It serves a significant purpose as an accessible window to Augustine's spiritual life and will serve particular readers quite well. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Excellent autobiography even if its slightly bias......
I found Eric von Manstein's autobiography to be highly enlightening and insightful in its presentation. Eric von Manstein is considered by anyone who knows anything about World War II as one of the war's finest military commanders, on par with history's great captains. Von Manstein's accomplishments easily put - Patton's for example, to sad shame. As much as our American egos get ruffled at such statement, its pretty clear that von Manstein was the brain behind many of the greatest German military accomplishments in that war. It was therefore, quite interesting to have his take on how he developed the "sickle" plan which led to the fall of France in 1940, or his Crimean campaign and his effort to restored the Eastern Front after Stalingrad. His concept of mobile defensive warfare often ran countered to Hitler's rather entrenched warfare mode. The difference led to the dismissal of the field marshal.4-0 out of 5 stars A good firsthand account from an important general
This book will be valuable to a military historian and possibly even to officers in the current military. What I found most interesting was Mansteins firsthand accounts of the decision-making process that Hitler and the commanders of the Wehrmacht went through; their urgency to invade France in 1939.If you're interested in the personal experiences during the way, Manstein talks about places he stayed in France during the offensive of 1940, experiences with the people on his staff, and conditions he himself endured in Russia.4-0 out of 5 stars Excellent First Person Account
This is a good read and there is alot of interesting information in this book. But also get: "Stalingrad: Memories and Reassessments", which has a rebuttal of a large part of this book by a Stalingrad survivor. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Great book for all!
I teach second grade in a public school in a large Catholic nieghborhood. I get invited to many first communions. I am not Catholic, but growing up in this nieghborhood I know a lot about this deep faith. The story of St.Francis reaches out to everyone no matter thier religion. It has always interested me. So when this book was released I borrowed it from the library. I was taken back by it. I now buy this book for all of my students that receive their first communion, and I personally inscribe each one. My students love this story!

3-0 out of 5 stars My two cents about the man on the penny.
Richard Carwardine's previous works dealt with Evangelical Christians in America, and he brings his knowledge of this movement into nearly every chapter of this study of Abraham Lincoln. The first three chapters of the book deal with Lincoln's pre-Presidential years: his ambitions, his ability to interpret public opinion, and his involvement with the nascent Republican Party.I take issue with the section on the religious roots of Lincoln's moral power. From the outset of his political career he aspired to the moral high ground opposing the expansion of slavery in the new territories.Although his knowledge of the Bible stemmed from his formative years, and he used passages frequently in speeches and conversations, he confessed he had been a religious skeptic. He only progressed toward serious Christian inquiry during the soul-wrenching years of the Civil War, and never shook his skepticism. It seems that if there's any relation, it's that his moral power served as a gateway to faith, and not vice versa.
5-0 out of 5 stars An Oxford Professor's "Neutral" View of Lincoln
I concur with other reviewers who praise this book for its organization, clarity, and insight. It departs from the usual chronological order followed by most biographies to concentrate on the development of Lincoln's character, party connections, and administrative abilities. At different times Lincoln is described as "shrewd," "cunning," "inefficient," "firm," "diligent," "energetic," and hard-working.
5-0 out of 5 stars An Intelligently Conceived Book
There is no shortage of biographies and other studies on Abraham Lincoln, America's Sixteenth President, often ranked as America's greatest president. Richard Carwardine's book is not, as he states, a personal biography of Lincoln, but rather analyzes the forces both internal and external that shaped Lincoln into the leader he became and how he used those forces. Carwardine's book is a well conceived and very well written book on a truly remarkable man.

5-0 out of 5 stars Good Collection of Nash Writings!
I only rate books that I really enjoy reading. While this one has some techy chapters, readers without a strong math background can still enjoy it.5-0 out of 5 stars excellent
Personally, I found this book to be very interestring. The proofs and ideas are presented in clear and non-rigomorphic fashion. One is able to read the works of Nash in the way he himself presented them, and hopefully appropriate some mental strategies used by this genius. There is much that goes on behind the scene of creation of proofs.I think mathematicians of today would greatly benefit from availability of larger number of books which would contain the mathematical works in the way they were originally presented. This is certainly a major step in that direction.

I can't begin to express how deeply satisfying it was to peruse these papers by John Nash. You almost felt you were right there at his side, as he penned them.Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars A good biography of the Virgin Queen by Tudor Scholar Erickson
Carolly Erickson has done her homework on the Tudors of England and in her 1984 biography of Queen Elizabeth (1533-1603)
4-0 out of 5 stars Nearly reads like a novel ...
I tend to read mostly fiction, but for some reason earlier this year I decided to foray into biographies. This book gives you a peek into Elizabethan life, gives you insight into Elizabeth I's personality, and you learn quite a lot of history, scandals, and rumours-of-the-day along the way.4-0 out of 5 stars First Elizabeth a reading pleasure
The major difference in "The First Elizabeth" by Carolly Erickson and "The Life of Elizabeth I" by Alison Weir is stylistic. Both women are thoroughly versed in the life of their royal subject, and obviously enthusiastic about her as well.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A true desert island book....
Anyone who is ever at a point in their life where they are doing any type of soul-searching would find the thoughts and words expressed here invaluable. After experiencing the worst tragedy, Robert Kennedy makes an incredible change....inside and then outside. Those of us who were not alive or old enough to remember do have books and videos to try and tell us his story. But his son goes beyond that and really gives us something more by sharing all the ideas that made up the man.

For those who missed the time in which those now called "Reagan Democrats" and those opposed to the ongoing war in Vietnam were inspired by the same voice, especially who cannot even begin to imagine how that could be, this small book is a must-read that will enable you to experience what is possible through inspiring [rather than angry divisive cynical] leadership.

Editorial Review

Benjamin Franklin may have been the most remarkable American ever to live: a printer, scientist, inventor, politician, diplomat, and--finally--an icon. His life was so sweeping that this comprehensive biography by H.W. Brands at times reads like a history of the United States during the 18th century. Franklin was at the center of America's transition from British colony to new nation, and was a kind of Founding Grandfather to the Founding Fathers; he was a full generation older than George Washington, John Adams, Thomas Jefferson, and Patrick Henry, and they all viewed him with deep respect. "Of those patriots who made independence possible, none mattered more than Franklin, and only Washington mattered as much," writes Brands (author of a well-received Teddy Roosevelt biography, Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Terrific story and superb author
Brand's has a great style with a smart wit and feel for the times as well as anecdotal material that gives great depth to his writing.

5-0 out of 5 stars The best BF bio out there.
There are quite a few bios on Ben Franklin out there, as you probably have noticed, but I think that this is the one to read. If you just want a quick book, with the basic info, then you might turn to Edmund Morgan's or elsewhere. But if you want the whole story, then this is the way to go. The book is quite long, yet still very readable and always interesting. Franklin's life was amazing, and Brands does a great job telling his story. Highly recommended!

1-0 out of 5 stars Typical pop biography
I never thought of Carolly Erickson as a first rate biographer, even though her "Bloody Mary" some years ago met with some critical acclaim. However, since her pulp novel "Hidden Diary of Marie Antoinette" hit the shelves, I have lost all confidence in her as a historian. I read "To the Scaffold" and at first found it charming, with the loveliness of the young queen brought to life but then it descends intothe same old cliche. The beautiful queen with the fat, indifferent husband who takes a lover out of boredom - this does not match with the information we are given about Marie-Antoinette in her letters to her mother and in the memoirs of those who knew her. Erickson chose sensationalism over facts. Anything to make a buck....

5-0 out of 5 stars Poor, spoiled Marie
This biography of Marie Antionette is well-written, well-researched, and quite enjoyable. It portrays Antoinette with as many personality facets as most of have: at times naive, sheltered, spoiled, lonely, materialistic, prideful, humble, cunning, generous... it doesn't show her as the evil Queen that the French made her out to be, nor does it try to show her as purely a victim.(Although, I do pity her unfortunate match with the young Dauphin, Louis XIV - yick!)
5-0 out of 5 stars Really interesting....
This was a very interesting, very detailed description of Marie Antoinette. This is the first historical book on the subject that I've read, but I definitely want to find out what happened after the end of the book.I always liked history as a kid, and this book has reopened that facination. ... the book is really boring, its like an interminable speech

4-0 out of 5 stars A Sample of Dr. Martin Luther King
This book is merely a sample of Dr. King and his words of wisdom.Originally penned in 1964, it expresses King's views on pacifism and why the time was right for the civil rights movement.King proves to be a gifted writer as he use metaphors and concrete examples to state his case.It only leaves reader to wonder how Dr. King would feel if he were alive today.

Editorial Review

You won't come away from this energetic biography thinking much of the French emperor either as a man or as a general. Historian Alan Schom depicts Napoleon (1769-1821) as a cold-hearted manipulator: Schom's blistering accounts of the 1798-99 Egyptian campaign and the disastrous 1812 retreat from Russia show the French army decimated due to its leader's failure to inform himself about the lands he was invading or to properly plan for provisioning his troops. The fun of this book comes from vigorous prose that vividly evokes Bonaparte's titanic personality and the colorful band of schemers surrounding him. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars French glory is always preferable to the truth eh?
Napoleon was a butcher, the Hitler of his age.Three million dead from the armies or europe, millions more forced into his armies and taken from their homes, only to return mangled both physically andmentally. He created a police state, with a vast internal spy network, with no real freedom, his enemies siezed and executed. He stole and extorted from everyone, particularly his own people. He destroyed the entire economy of europe and particularly France. He reintroduced slavery to France's colonies. He turned a potential democracy into a dictatorship and used his power for his own glory and enrichment without a thought to the death and destruction he left in his wake.He routinely executed prisoners of war, and despite repeated pleadings from his docotrs, he never established even the most basic care for the wounded, allowing them to die in the ditches and fields where they fell - nothing to him anymore. He lied incessently and constantly overstated his victories and his role in them. He was a coward and deserted his armies at least three times (Egypt, Russia, Waterloo) and in the end he lost far more than he won.
1-0 out of 5 stars Poorly written
After several attempts, I gave up on this book at about page 20. It reads like a high school book report.

3-0 out of 5 stars ugly but decent
I agree with the basic points of other reviewers: this book is extremely biased against Napoleon even though the author proclaims himself neutral; the maps are inadequate; and the treatment of psychology and motivation is shallow.I want to add that the writing style is primitive, poorly edited, with awkward grammar, sometimes confusing basic points. It reads like the work of an amateur scholar. The author is in command of his facts but not of his story.Nonetheless, the facts are there, and the inherent quality of the subject matter makes up for bad craftsmanship. This a readable book, though not a great one.Somebody tell us if another book is better: McLynn?Tulard? ... Editorial Review

"Ulysses S. Grant was a perceptive and surprisingly modern manager," writes Al Kaltman. "A pragmatist who learned from his own and others' successes and failures, he brought new dimensions to strategic planning. He was adept at seizing and exploiting opportunities as they presented themselves, and he boldly shattered paradigms long before the term Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Well written book, with good advice.
I found it both intertaining to read, and thought provoking. It is full of logical advice, and real-world examples.

5-0 out of 5 stars A great book on managing, leading and facing life's issues!
Identical to the book on leadership using Robert E. Lee, Kaltman has taken issues faced by Ulysses S. Grant and placed them in similar context.Issues managers and people in general face are brought forth on how to deal with adversity, changes, demands, employees and other popular concepts are clearly written. Kaltman has put together a great book in regards to managing work related and also non-work related issues that can be very beneficial to anyone. The book is a rather quick read and covers many topics or situations Grant faced that could be represented towards leadership scenarios from his early beginnings to after the war. This book is full of great insight and lessons to be learned from either failures or successes that Grant went through. Many people can benefit from reading this facinating book on leadership and take what they learned and use it in everyday life.5 STARS!!!
