Editorial Review

In this lively biography, Edmund Morris returns to the gifted, energetic, and thoroughly controversial man whom the novelist Henry James called "King Theodore." In his two terms as president of the United States, Roosevelt forged an American empire, and he behaved as if it was his destiny. In this sequel to his Pulitzer Prize-winning biography Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful survey of TR's terms as President
I would be remiss if I did not mention first that Edmund Morris is a literary and scholarly master and has performed an outstand feat in communicating Theodore Roosevelt's two terms as President of the United States.
5-0 out of 5 stars A great biography.
This being the second of three(the third is not out yet) biography's of Teddy Roosevelt makes me anxious to read the third book.

4-0 out of 5 stars Pure political energy
Edmund Morris' book on the Presidency of Theodore Roosevelt is well documented with a minimum amount of literary license, sticking to the facts and relating those facts in chronological order.By following the Presidency almost in a month by month account, the reader has to keep domestic issues/themes and international issues/themes organized since these issues develop over time, simultaneous to each other. This is somewhat of a different writing style from the approach David McCullough takes with the life and presidency of John Adams. McCullough is more likely to relate a series of international events/issues making it a bit more easy for the reader to see themes and actions within historic context.Morris is more literal and adheres to a more choronological approach to the presidency of Theodore Roosevelt, and thus the reader ties the multiple themes of the presidency together more slowly. However the themes do emerge over time as does the reader's appreciation of Theodore Roosevelt's incredible political instincts and personality, intellectual mastery of complex issues, conservation foresight, and a totally American perspective on the destiny of the country and its relationship with the community of other nations.

Editorial Review

Books on Buddhism may overflow the shelves, but the life story of the Buddha himself has remained obscure despite over 2,500 years of influence on millions of people around the world. In an attempt to rectify this, and to make the Buddha and Buddhism accessible to Westerners, the beloved scholar and author of such sweeping religious studies as Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars To understand the Buddha be his goal
Karen Armstrong's biography of the Buddha on grounds of history is good. However, her understanding of the Buddha and his percepts is naive. Buddhahood and not the Buddha is the goal. While she amply brings out the essence of this, she pays an equal attention to myths which to my mind are senseless and even detract one trying to understand the Buddha's teachings. A biography of the Buddha is pointless unless the essence of his teachings are brought out. While in all fairness Ms Armstrong does attempt this, she falls short of being able to comprehend the Goal. She brings out the Buddha as a missionary rather than someone that reveals the Truth. In the East the concept of religion is not water tight, the sense of being a Buddhist or a Hindu are not essential for seeking Nirvana or Brahman as is understood in the east. There is no concept of salvation in the East, simply because that implies bondage which implies reality of being. The Buddhist thought as does all eastern thought, speaks of the world as being unreal, therefore even bondage is an illusion therefore by that twist of logic salvation or freedomtoo is illusory, therefore the state of Nirvana or Brahman as spoken of in the east is considered one's natural state which is realised when all that one is not is understood. Ms Armstrong's effort at understanding the Buddha while comendable falls short of understanding what the Buddha teaches and therefore in a sense the Buddha. All said, Ms Armstrong definitely has done justice to placing the Buddha in a historical age and understading him from a point of view of society as it was then.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good stuff if you're intellectual
Karen Armstrong, an established author, has given us the story of Siddartha Gautama, who eventually became the Buddha, while also delving into Eastern thinking and philosphy and culture. If you're just looking for the story of Buddha's life, this is probably more involved than what you're looking for, but as a scholarly introduction to Buddha AND Buddhism, this is a wonderful book!

2-0 out of 5 stars What's the point?
The Buddha didn't want to be worshipped and no reliable historical account of him exists. The whole book is speculation. If you want to study buddhism read a book about buddhism not this book. ... Read more

Jmaes Joyce takes us on Stephen Daedalus' interior journey from pre-teen as son of a country gentleman to young adult who wanders the streets of Dublin, struggling with sin, salvation, intellect, ambivalence about his homeland, and his father's decline. It is not a linear path, but then whose is?The story is not so much about the artist as a young man, but about a young man's journey to artistic sensibility, its pretensions and exhilirations.

5-0 out of 5 stars Inspiring Audrey style
I think Audrey Hepburn will be eternally remembered not only as one of the kindest and most generous women that has ever volunteered for Unicef, but to us women as a timeless, most graceful role model of style. She's the perfect embodiment of the adagio that in elegance less is more. Her streamlined, understated style that yet made one of the biggest statements in fashion history continues to be an inspiration to us women of the 21st century despite the forty years that separate us from "Breakfast at Tiffany's." Clarke Keogh's book captures Audrey's spirit like no other. It is beautifully illustrated and there are contributions from Hubert de Givenchy, Ralph Lauren or Gregory Peck, among other people who generously share with us souvenirs of this angel of grace that they had the chance to meet in person. Her wardrobe and makeup are meticulously reviewed and this book will prove an invaluable tool and source of inspiration for all those women who want to bring more elegance and refinement into their lives. One of the best assets in your style bookcase and one that you will gladly pass down to generations of graceful women to come.

4-0 out of 5 stars The original book of Shackleton's adventure
When the Endurance steamed south into the splitting ice pack of the Weddel Sea in the summer of 1914, she carried aboard the renowned British explorer Earnest Shackleton. The Endurance was specially designed and massively constructed by one of the world's finest shipyards, staffed with scientists and qualified volunteers and outfitted with meticulously tested equipment. Shackleton himself was an experienced polar veteran who had once come within a day's march of being the first to reach the south pole. But in spite of careful planning, the Endurance was doomed, and this expedition would be Shackleton's last Antarctic voyage.Unexpected cold weather froze the ship solidly into the ice, and 7 months later, the mounting pressure of millions of tons of ice crushed the three-foot wooden hull. The Endurance sank into the black water, and left the 30 exhausted men marooned on the treacherous melting ice flows of the storm-churned antarctic sea.For six months the poorly-equipped castaways wouldstruggle under inconceivable hardship until the drifting ice broke up enough for Shackleton to lead his expedition in three open lifeboats through freezing open water to a lifeless bit of rock called Elephant Island. With 5 companions aboard the remaining battered lifeboat, Shackleton left his crew and stuck out across the open ocean in a desperate attempt to reach a remote whaling station to obtain help. His faithful men would remain behind to weather the winter storms sleeping under the upended wreckage of a lifeboat -- their lives dangling by the frail promise that he wouldsomeday return. Alfred Lancing is an experienced journalist whose detailed research combines with direct and perfectly-paced prose and a handful of the expedition's original photographs. It is a tale ofleadership, unflagging courage, and determination in the face of impossible odds. But maybe the real definition of heroism is to be undaunted by the impossible. After sixteen days covering 900 miles of water in an amazing feat of open boat navigation, Shackleton struck land at South Georgia Island -- and after a three-day sleepless march over the 10,000 foot mountains in the huge island's interior, Shackleton and his remaining companions finally stumbled into a remote whaling outpost. And 450 days after being shipwrecked, after 5 attempts in three different ships, Shackleton managed to return to Elephant island to rescue his 22 remaining crew members in a tugboat borrowed from the Chilean government -- finally delivering all 29 of his men without the loss of a single life --and making Endurance one of the most inspiring stories of human survival every written.
4-0 out of 5 stars An account of breathtaking courage
The author has clearly been rigorous in piecing together diary extracts and interview notes to put together this account of an adventure, or perhaps ordeal, which required of its survivors a degree of courage, composure and determination that cannot fail to humble yet uplift and inspire the reader. The style of narrative is rather matter-of-fact, rather than dramatic, and its coverage is limited to the expedition itself without dwelling much on the lives of the key players before or after.

5-0 out of 5 stars An incredible book
Alfred Lansing's book, Endurance, dramatically details the 1914 expedition to the Antarctic led by Sir Ernest Shackleton.Although a non-fiction book, Lansing manages to make it read like a thriller, adventure. He wrote his story using first person accounts, interviews of survivors, journal entries, etc. While sometimes history can be a bit dry, this novel truly makes you feel a part of the adventure and reads very quickly.Ernest Shackleton's leadership abilities ensure not only the survival of the crew, but demonstrate his character as a man.Crew and officers were treated alike and shared in the duties of survival.Order was maintained and his personality and command of the situation enabled the group to survive what could have been a disaster. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Living the oridinary extraordinarily: Reminiscences of a Catholic convert.
The Long Loneliness by Dorothy Day has long been held to be an important social document as well as a meaningful written Catholic memoir, because it delves deeply into the intimate conversion experience whereby there is a moving epiphany that changes that person so completely and totally. And The Long Loneliness illustrates that point quite clearly. Even before the Catholic Worker was ever founded by Dorothy Day and Peter Maurin, their approach to religious activism was almost on par with other lay Catholic social orgaizations, mirroring the motto of Catholic Action, founded in 1868, the best, whose battle cry is: Prayer. Action. Sacrifice. However, what makes this memoir so appealing is that it is outlined in a belief framework of pragmatic thought and a consistent work ethic, like Opus Dei. Dorothy Day, in the recounting of her conversion and the afteraffects of it, is not given to flights of supernatural fancy or prone to self-created mystical experiences or visions, which, when people do have them, are psychosomatic or psychotic, at best.
5-0 out of 5 stars Enriching Exploration of the Discovery of Faith
"The Long Loneliness," is one of the most enriching testimonies of an individual's search and discovery of faith that I have ever read, although I found the first 60 pages a bit slow (about her background and coming of age). I am very happy I persevered, because it only got better and more inspirational, as she began to perceive glimpses of God and tried to learn how best to follow Him.
3-0 out of 5 stars The Long Loneliness
This book is Dorothy Day's own autobiography. I know she was a remarkable woman. Everything that I have seen and heard about her has been outstanding. I was excited when I found this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars An excellent overview.
Does character define destiny? Here's a fine comparative biography of two greats in GEORGE WASHINGTON AND BENEDICT ARNOLD: A TALE OF TWO PATRIOTS, which contrasts personalities, objectives, lives and achievements. One rose above his enemies, the other joined them. Psychological and historical insights blend in an excellent overview.
5-0 out of 5 stars An excellent history of the Revolution and an examination of the character of its hero and its great villain
This book was a pleasure to read.It presents aspects of the Revolutionary Warin ways that are often not given us.Too often, the founding is presented as a united band of enlightened brethren who created the founding documents with only minor differences.Washington is often depicted as the transcendent leader who was universally lauded. And Benedict Arnold is the brand name for traitor.Well, this terrific history by Dave R. Palmer, who was the superintendent of West Point, presents a realistic picture of the struggles Washington had in leading the armed forces and all those who had designs in removing him and advancing themselves or a favorite in his place. And the heroic contributions of Benedict Arnold in important battles through Saratoga are also noted.
5-0 out of 5 stars This books answers a lot of questions
Like most Americans, my knowledge of Benedict Arnold was limited.I never fully understood why he betrayed his country nor did I appreciate all he meant to the war effort before he did, until I read this book.It fills in all the blanks.Arnold was a complicated man whose ego was his undoing. It's also fascinating to see the trajectory of his life compared to his contemporary, George Washington.I highly recommend this one.

Let's get one thing straight: Carl Hiaasen doesn't like the Walt Disney Company. Whenever the giant entertainment conglomerate stumbles, as it did with its proposed Civil War theme park in Virginia, Hiaasen cheers. When a rhinoceros mysteriously dies at Disney's new theme park, Animal Kingdom, Hiaasen secretly hopes for the worst, because, as he writes, "no scandal is so delectable as a Disney scandal." 3-0 out of 5 stars Fundimentally flawed, but a fun think piece.
In Team Rodent, Carl Hiaasen delivers an honestly entertaining picture of his own reservations at what he sees as the Disney Corporation's attempts at becoming a culturally omnipotent force. This piece is more of a political pamphlet in format: it's too long to be considered a simple essay, but it's certainly short enough to be read in a single sitting.
3-0 out of 5 stars A quick, fun read for Hiaasen's fans
Not much to add beyond the title of this review. Yup, Carl despises Disney.A very lucid and well written diatribe.

4-0 out of 5 stars Carl Hiaasen Takes on the Mouse
In this essay-style book, Hiaasen takes on Disney and all its decadence from the point of view of a true Floridian. Very funny and full of disturbing Disney facts (including one about the mysterious torture and death of an Animal Kingdom rhino; ties between Disney and the destruction caused by Hurricane Andrew; and all the yucky deals made between the rat and the state of FL's government). Good read, highly entertaining for Floridians, tourists, and anyone who loves Hiaasen. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Amazing and inspiring read!
I was a fan of Angelina's prior to buying this book, but after reading it, I gained more respect for her as a humanitarian worker. This is a fascinating insight into her work with UNHCR as she traveled through several countries and kept a journal. These are her journal entries as she was working within the countries. I couldn't put the book down and learned so much about UNHCR and other orgranizations working within countries. It is well-worth reading and I gurantee that you will learn a tremendous deal about UNHCR and gain respect for the refugees as well as admire Angelina for her work with the agency.

5-0 out of 5 stars Incredible & Horrifying
I admire Angelina Jolie for leaving behind her Hollywood sanctuary to become a Goodwill Ambassador for the UNHCR and taking the trips as she describes in these journals. The stories she tells are so real and scary, it's a sad reminder of what goes on in other parts of the world. Don't expect exceptional writing, but stark reality as noted during the events that Jolie witnessed.I would love to see another set of her journals from trips in later years.

5-0 out of 5 stars Inspiring Book
I've always liked Angelina Jolie but had sometimes had doubt in her charity work as more than a publicity ploy. Once you read this book it is impossible to doubt her sincerity. It is a quick and easy read but still a very good one. As someone wanting to work with NGOs and be a International Social Worker this book just reinforced that going down that track was not only a great idea but much needed. I think everyone should read this book if for nothing else it helps you to realize just how lucky you are. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Great Read
Very Interesting and the photos are great. Beatle lovers will enjoy this anthology, but I would recommend the book The Beatles by Bob Spitz.

5-0 out of 5 stars Everything you'd want to know!
There really isn't much to say about this book other than the fact that it is the best Beatles book out there. It is told by The Beatles, and has so many fantastic photos that are so awesome. It goes through the span of The Beatles career year through year, and describes many great stories, and gives some background information to some of their songs which is cool.It is so cool though, because you really get to see how wise and intellegant the members of The Beatles were. You really don't need any other Beatles book than this one, so buy it!

5-0 out of 5 stars The Perfect Book About The Beatles -- Because It Was WRITTEN By The Beatles!
If you buy only one book about the Beatles, it needs to be this one. Not only does it contain unique information not found elsewhere, but this unique info comes right from the four guys who should know better than anyone -- John, Paul, George and Ringo. Even though this came out a few years ago, put it at the top of your xmas list for the Beatlemaniac in your life. There are a couple of other great Beatles books out there (TURN ME ON, DEAD MAN by Andru Reeve and JOHN by Cynthia Lennon are just two that come to mind), but be sure to get this one if you haven't already. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Queen Elizabeth I (Historic Lives)
Elizabeth I (The British Library, Historic Lives Series) by Susan Doran is a really superb book! Though I have read many books about Queen Elizabeth this one, though concise, thoroughly captures the essence of the history of Elizabeth and her England.Susan Doran provides us a captivating glimpse into the complicated world facing Elizabeth both in her personal and majestic life as she confronts the dynamic political and religious world developing around her and the England she loves.Elizabeth I was a complex person ruling in a complicated world. In a very even handed way, Susan Doran presents how a dynamic Queen Elizabeth, at her best and worst, navigates as best she can, through the perils and complexities confronting her and England.Susan Doran gives us an Elizabeth who is real. She shows Elizabeth as a Queen who has human frailities, who is adept in propaganda, can be as cruel as she is rewarding, yet whose monarchy enthralls and inspires us to this day. Susan Doran's adept use ofa superb collection of illustrations throughout the book really provides a wonderful dimension to her protrayal of Elizabeth as a dynamic queen of England. This is a book I recommend to anyone who has an interest in Elizabeth I, Queen of England.

5-0 out of 5 stars An Excellent Overview
This slim volume is only 144 pages including index. Susan Doran has written a complete, if brief, biography of Elizabeth I that hits all the main points of her life and rule. Nothing important seems to have been left out, and the narrative seems unhurried. One could read this book in a fairly short time, and have an understanding of Elizabeth's reign. However, for those who would like a bit more elaboration, Doran includes a Further Reading List at the end.Read more

Editorial Review

When Marta Sgubin joined Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis's household in 1969, she thought her job as companion to John Jr. and Caroline Kennedy temporary. Twenty-five years later, she was still with the family, as cook, household manager, and friend to "Madam," who urged Sgubin to compile her repertoire of simple but elegant dishes. Sgubin's Read more

This book is like a glimpse into LIFE ON THE OTHER SIDE..! What elegance!! Mrs. Onassis....what a lady..After perusing the recipes..I wonder how my diet is...(not good) I don't think much of us put the time and effort into the COOKING like the author does..Wow! What a book!

5-0 out of 5 stars Great format
This is an amazing book. You feel like you're right there in the home with them. The public Mrs. Onassis was a very graceful and dignified lady. This book gives you a little peek at another side. I really enjoyed reading that she enjoyed looking at Marta's seed catalogs every spring.Because of these 2 ladies, John and Caroline grew into some very nice adults. The food pictures are so lovely...you want to try each and every recipe. This is such a good format mixing the recipes and memories and telling the stories behind the dishes. This is one book I don't loan to anyone.

5-0 out of 5 stars a reader
like most everyone else i bought this book hoping for more of an inside glimpse into jacqueline kennedy onassis' life wondering what kind of food someone who had been everywhere and experienced almost everything life has to offer would have at home.what a pleasant surprise to find she enjoyed foods all of us can prepare at home without too much muss or fuss.who would have thought shepherds pie or brownies!what i found made the book a must for me though, is the antedote about aristotle onassis and the chocolate cake.i actually laughed.i can see why ms. sgubin fit into this family so nicely because she herself is so charming and kind.i think you'll enjoy "cooking for madame"even if you don't cook simply because it revisites someone we liked having in the world community so much.kudos marta! ...
