Editorial Review

A compelling chronicle of a nation and its leaders during the period when modern America was created. With an uncanny feel for detail and a novelist's grasp of drama and depth, Doris Kearns Goodwin brilliantly narrates the interrelationship between the inner workings of the Roosevelt White House and the destiny of the United States. Goodwin paints a comprehensive, intimate portrait that fills in a historical gap in the story of our nation under the Roosevelts. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars One of the very best books ever written!
Doris Kearns Goodwin is a marvelous writer. She combines real history and real people in a way that is non-judgmental, educational and very redable. All of her books are a MUST.
5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderfully Portrayed History
Excellent book. Unfortunately educational textbooks only give a surface version about the lives and interaction between Franklin and Eleanor. This book peels layer by layer about their relationship (negative and postive) and the reality of what the United States went through pre-war, during and post-war.
5-0 out of 5 stars Worthy of its Pulitzer - Biography at its best.
Goodwin takes a really interesting approach here to what is essentially the biography of a couple.Doing a biography of a couple is fairly unique as a starting point, but Goodwin gets more creative, using the time period of the Second World War as a magnifying glass to really bring the traits of her subjects into focus. The result is amazingly well done.

4-0 out of 5 stars Too much detail about the design of his shoe.
BUT, if you take anything out of this book, it's the fact that Jordan works harder than his peers, whether it was basketball or business. His inner drive and desire to succeed and give it his all is what I took away from the book.I would skim the parts on shoe design and focus mainly on his words and advice, especially on work ethic.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Man Greater than the Myths
In this small but valuable volume, Oates explores the reality beyond the two sources of Lincoln myth: the primary myth of a saintly and folkloric Lincoln of Carl Sandburg and a secondary myth of the 'white honky' Lincoln of the 1970's revisionists. Oates emphasizes that Lincoln drew deeply upon the "spirit of his age", which was a profoundly revolutionary time across the world. Oates relates how Lincoln absorbed one of the core lessons of America from the example of Henry Clay: : "in this country one can scarcely be so poor, but that, if he will, he can acquire sufficient education to get through the world respectably".
5-0 out of 5 stars A Concise, Readable Study of our Greatest President.
If you're interested in understanding what the man Abraham Lincoln was like, this is the book for you. This short, well-documented study of our sixteenth President cuts through the myths and the utter nonsense that have been written about Lincoln to expose the real hero behind these tales. This work shows Lincoln as the driven, courageous yet fallible man who never gave up on his dream of freedom for all men. Highly recommended!

2-0 out of 5 stars It did not elaborate on the question of Lincoln's parentage.
As an amateur genealogist I discovered that I was a sixth cousin, five times removed to President Abraham Lincoln through the Lincoln and Holmes families. On page 21 ( Abraham Lincoln, The man Behind The Myths )Mr. Oates wrote that there was a mistaken belief that Thomas Lincoln wasnot Abraham's real father rather it was a Senator John C. Calhoun or aHenry Clay. If this was true it would mean that I was not related toPresident Abraham Lincoln. How would such a rumour start ? Is there anydocumented evidence that Nancy Lincoln had an affair with one of these menwhile being married to Thomas Lincoln. At the time I am trying tolocate Stephen B. Oates so I can get this matter cleared up. Sincerely, Mr. Blair E. Bartlett, 87 Shillington Road, Saint John, NewBrunswick, Canada, E2J 4K7 1-506-696-6175 ... Read more

To read the latest Trump tale is to be reminded of writer Fran Lebowitz' comment that there are only two social classes in America--the celebrities and the audience. Business biographer Robert Slater, who spent 100 hours with Donald Trump, provides an intriguing link between the two in Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars A Good Read!
This admiring biography of real estate billionaire Donald Trump begins with a reference to Trump's "swept-back blonde mane" - although his thinning forward comb-over is probably the most famous weird hairdo in America. Perhaps author Robert Slater picked up a bit of his subject's tendency toward what Trump calls "truthful hyperbole." Slater's writing is interesting and accessible, in a breathless sort of way. However, despite being based on 150 interviews, this biography doesn't contain a lot of information that Trump has not already disseminated through his books, TV show and softball press interviews. Slater seems to regard Trump's exaggerations as charming foibles and, given tremendous access, apparently accepts Trump's self-assessment that he is a skilled negotiator, shrewd investor and efficient administrator - even when the author's own anecdotes show Trump in another guise: as a bullying micro-manager. Of course, the insight that negative publicity isn't always a bad thing is a primary theme. We recommend this close-up meeting with Trump to general readers who find that his outsized ego, lifestyle and accomplishments hold a certain fascination and to businesspeople who just want to know how he always lands on his feet. (Hint: he delivers the goods.)

5-0 out of 5 stars Showman, Showoff Or Sage?
If you are interested in the business world or not, there has been no other business leader consistently in the news more then Donald Trump over the last 20 years. If you think he is an attention starved ego driven showman or just a smart business leader in the right place at the right time, the fact is you have an opinion of him.Few other business leaders share his celebrity. It is this celebrity that prompted me to pick up this book for no other reason then to see what all the fuss was about. As a bit of a perspective to this review I have not watched one episode of his TV show and I have always felt that his biggest skill was an uncanny knack for finding television cameras. If you mentioned Trump to me the only thing I would think was oversized ego.
5-0 out of 5 stars Trumping the Business World with "Truthful Hyperbole"
I have read and reviewed many of Slater's previous books and consider him to be among the most perceptive and eloquent commentators on the contemporary business world. It came as no surprise, therefore, that Trump agreed to cooperate with Slater on the writing of this book but only after checking him out with those who had already had a close working relationship with him, notably Jack Welch. There is probably no other executive who has a tighter schedule than does Trump. However, on numerous occasions, beginning in June of 2004, he agreed to meet with Slater or talk with him on the telephone. Trump also arranged for Slater to attend various private meetings related to Trump's building projects; to travel with him to a building site in Manhattan and observe his inspection of it; to journey with Trump for a book promotion appearance at QVC, the shopping channel; and to fly with him on his jet to a "demolition party" in Chicago where Trump planned to build a 90-story $800-million luxury tower on what had been the site of the Chicago Sun-Times. Slater was also allowed to observe a casting call for the third season of The Apprentice television program at during the filming of one of the episodes for its third season. Finally, Trump helped to facilitate many of the interviews of those best qualified to discuss both his business career and the celebrity synonymous with it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Review ofMemoirs of US Grant
General Grant's use of the English language is very interesting and informative.Absolutely a pleasure to read.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Masterpiece
This book is a must-read for any Civil War or American history buff. Grant's writing is consistently clear, elegant, beautiful. He gives an engaging account of his wartime experiences that are accurate to the best of his ability, and he writes with introspection and humility. The personal letters at the end of the volume reveal much about this fascinating man, and are a welcome addition. Please read this one! Another wonderful book in this series is the volume containing Frederick Douglass's autobiographical works.

5-0 out of 5 stars A History Buff's Wet Dream...
This is certainly a great book, and in parts, it is a good book. Grant has a very terse, matter-of-fact style, which makes for easy reading. The bulk of the book is devoted to the Civil War, and there are dry patches, and multitudes of "We went to the ridge, and then to the river, and moved our artillery up to the picket" and such-like. But that is what happened, and so you can't fault Grant for his meticulous detailing of troop movements, correspondence with fellow officers, etc. As I said, the great majority of the book is devoted to the Civil War, and there is not a word about Grant's tenure in the White House. Personally, of all topics covered by Grant, I find him to be most fascinating on the subject of the Mexican-American War of 1847. This is not something commonly focused on in history classes, but Grant's account is riveting. Additionally, Grant's remembrances of Lincoln are very interesting, as is his almost awed reverence for the military abilities of Sherman. The book is long, but it doesn't seem long, and if you have a love of history, this is indispensable stuff. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Epic biography of one of our greatest presidents (before he is president)
With a book over 700 pages long, it first seems like it may be a rambling book, but The Rise of Theodore Roosevelt is anything but that. Morris gives great detail of Roosevelt's adventures from birth to the time he is Vice President. The book makes you feel as if you become a very close observer of Roosevelt's life before he becomes President of the United States. Morris sharply describes the political struggles and fights that Roosevelt endures in all the different jobs from his cattle ranching days in the West to the battles when he is Governor of New York. What is nice about Morris is that he does seem to admire the personality and energy of Roosevelt, but also balances that admiration with the critical observations of the contradictions of Roosevelt's mindset and upbringing. Throughout the book, you see many hilarious anecdotes as well as the sobering ones. There is not a dull area in this book. I felt that after reading this book that I knew the character of Roosevelt as well as I know the character of my best friend. Anyone thinking that days in the past were very simple, should read this book to understand the complexity of building a political career and succeeding in politics in the late 1800's to the early 1900's of U.S. history. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars "Like Roots, Only White"
That description from one of the opening chapter headings is a good indication of what's in store! This book is a roller coaster ride from humor so subtle and intuitive that you conclude that the authors are actually channeling Bush to wit so ascerbic and wickedly funny that you cringe in puritan guilt while laughing so hard that tears roll.I loved the forward "by" Dick Cheney. He ends his remarks with those similar to ones he has made on the floor of the Senate (anyone remember that?).The audio book is also really entertaining, with loads of added sketches and gags narrated by the voice of Bush from [...].If we cant' be rid of this bunch, at least we can laugh through the next (painful) 2+ years!

5-0 out of 5 stars A little too true to life
Obviously, if you're a fan of the weekly satire at weeklyradioaddress.com, then this book is for you. But the book succeeds on its own (lack of) merits, and while it's clear some people will call it mean for the stuff on Laura, that's probably the funniest part of the book. Why has Laura been off-limits? Hillary, Nancy, Rosalyn sure weren't. I think people are overprotective because they feel a little bit sorry for her...
2-0 out of 5 stars a disappointment

5-0 out of 5 stars Easily the most interesting and honest Cash book!
Marshall Grant, despite what others might believe, would know more about J.R. Cash and Johnny Cash than others who have managed to pick the bones of the legendary singer over the last few years. Unlike others who seem to want to make the man greater than his legacy, Marshall Grant opens that dangerous door of letting the reader know exactly what kind of performer Cash was while never ignoring his all too human dark side - which was darker than some might want to hear about. Grant forces readers to face the fact (in a very untabloid-ish manner that grabs your attention and demands your respect) that while Johnny Cash only seemed like someone who redeemed himself to achieve the god-like status he has been cloaked in, he was way more flawed and damaged a person than most people might imagine...He had some very nasty demons who chased him nearly all of his life and who made themselves known in horrible ways - including Cash's unfair firing of Grant in 1980, the unfair rumors of Grant's departure which evolved into a major lawsuit, the enormous amount of money withheld from both Grant and Luther Perkins estate, Cash's questionable financial habits, the fallout from his numerous "no-shows," his demanding nature to act above everything and everyone around him at times, his constant battle of never completely ridding himself of pills again and again, and his many indulgences that were as destructive to the people around him as they were to the singer himself. Grant also balances out his portrait of John Cash by offering many recollections of the many acts of generosity and his uncanny identification with those far less fortunate than him. Above all, Marshall Grant finally gives the late Luther Perkins the enomrous credit so many others might trivialize. If you want to hear the truth from someone who was closer to Cash than anyone except June Carter than Marshall Grant's book (endorsed by Cash's daughter Roseanne) is certainly well worth reading.

After the fall of France in June 1940, Winston Churchill was begging USA President Roosevelt for military aid (in fact, all sorts of support was then needed) as no one knew what would the 'fate' of the French fleet was going to be.
5-0 out of 5 stars absolutely a delight to read
I was adrift when I finished this volume.
5-0 out of 5 stars solitary courage
No better profile of Churchill 1932-40 exists. Whetted with acrimony and disdain, Churchill is ultimately proved right (and his real task commences).

Editorial Review

A thoughtful companion volume to the earlierSurely You Are Joking Mr. Feynman!. Perhaps the most intriguing parts of the book are the behind-the-scenes descriptions of science and policy colliding in the presidential commission to determine the cause of the Challenger space shuttle explosion; and the scientific sleuthing behind his famously elegantO-ring-in-ice-water demonstration. Not as rollicking as his other memoirs, but in some ways more profound. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Not as entertaining as SYJ
This book starts off pretty interesting, but gets bogged down in criticism of NASA management. While I agree with Mr. Feynman on this, I kind of got tired of it after a while.Still, this is a worthwhile read, and if you're a Feynman fan I'd say get it.If you've never read Feynman before I'd strongly suggest Surely You're Joking Mr. Feynman!
5-0 out of 5 stars Enjoyable
This book was great. It won't be the literary testament of the 20th century but the stories are thought-provoking, humourous and edifying. This book dwells a lot on the Challenger incident and the ensuing investigation. There is a fair amount of detail there which may not interest some readers but this reader found it to be a good mix of technical information into a very human story.I have actually not read Surely You're Joking yet so I cannot compare it.In short, recommended to anyone interested in the whole Feynman persona and more generally, the inner workings of a genius.

4-0 out of 5 stars A Truly Nutty Professor Makes for Great Reading
More stories of the great physicist. In this book he tells of his early family life and the story of his first marriage. He also explains in great detail his role on the ChallengerCommission, and how the problem with the O rings came out. Great reading. Feynman was bigger than life. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars I want John Canemaker's privileges
Once again John Canemaker has made me envious of his access to such beautiful artwork. The behind-the-scene stories of the personalities who created the characters we grew up with is wonderful. A gorgeous book with illustrations that make it worth the money all by themselves.

5-0 out of 5 stars Nine Lives
So much has been written and said about several of these nine legendary Disney animators that I very much doubted a lot of new ground was going to be broken, especially in a Hyperion release, but Canemaker rises to the task here, and then some.I was most interested in artists like Les Clark and Johnny Lounsbery, who have received less attention than some of the others. Canemaker not only brings them vividly to life with meticulous research, but he also manages to bring new information and fresh insight to all nine of his fascinating subjects. No matter how well you thought you knew the Nine Old Men and their work, there's plenty here for you. This book reveals the lives and personalities of these men, analyzes their contributions extraordinarily well, and also their working and personal relationships with each other, and presents great new visual material from their lives in and away from the studio. The Kimball stuff is a special treat.4-0 out of 5 stars Discovering the Genius Of Exactly What Made Disney "Disney"
John Canemaker has given readers the Disney animation book that's been missing for decades. Only it's the Readers Digest version. Canemaker is forced to compact nine amazing biographies into one book. Each of his nine subjects - the core group of gifted animators who defined the look and feel of Disney animation from the 1930's through the 1970's - is deserving of far more time and space than a single volume can deliver. Nevertheless, he's done an amazing job, and he introduces us to these men with the same careful critical objectivity he did in "Before the Animation Begins", Canemaker's marvelous 1996 book focusing on the great Disney visual development and story artists. 5-0 out of 5 stars The writings of a one of the Great Americans - a must have!
What a difference of few decades make. When I was a youngster the founders were all revered and taught in school.Nowadays, they are almost ignored and condemned for not conforming to our modern view of morality.Of course, the present view is both arrogant and ignorant because we assume that future generations will believe as we do and lacks the humility to realize that the human condition is fraught with weakness and sin as well as triumph and wisdom.
5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Comprehensive Collection
This edition of Jefferson's writings is an excellent comrehensive collection. Edited by Jefferson biographer Merrill Peterson this volume is a treasure.5-0 out of 5 stars Jefferson, a renaissance man.

1-0 out of 5 stars Seriously Lacking
This book was not at all what I expected from Brands, who was a Pulitzer Prize finalist for his biography of Benjamin Franklin, First American. In trying to make an academic biography accessible to the reading public, Brands' writing suffers greatly and becomes far too colloquial. At one point, when discussing Indian-White relations, he goes so far as to call the whites "Palefaces."It was a chore to get through, and while it heightened my knowledge of Jackson, nothing was particularly memorable except what I already knew or, perhaps, the actions I disagreed with (his invasion of Florida or his use of martial law after the Battle of New Orleans).Particularly when discussing Jackson's historically far reaching actions, such as kicking the Cherokees out of Georgia, or his battle with Biddle and eventual destruction of the Bank of the United States, Brands does a deplorable job of explaining what happened.Elements of background, and why Jackson did whatever it was he did exactly, as the reader will be confused on that point, are conspicuously missing.I have read similarly poor reviews of another biography by Brands, TR: The Last Romantic, and if First American is at all similar in style, I know why he didn't win that Pulitzer.

4-0 out of 5 stars Fine Biography of Andrew Jackson
Andrew Jackson was a major figure in American history from his service in the War of 1812 through his presidency. And even in retirement after his departure from Washington, D. C., he was still an important figure in American politics.
5-0 out of 5 stars Great work by a fabulous author
Brand's has a great style with a smart wit and feel for the times as well as anecdotal material that gives great depth to his writing. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Was he taking a nap on this one?
Any book Trump pens is a good investment, and in this his second offering, he tells stories, names names, and provides worthwhile insight. But compared to The Art of the Deal and his third book, The Art of the Comeback, he seems to have done this one lying down. There is significantly less material, fewer hot scoops, and less of the bottom-line rhetoric Trump has made his style.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good insight
Who knows more about Trump than Trump himself? This is a good book if you want to know more about Trump. At times he is sincere; like when he tells of the various disadvantaged people he has helped. At times he sounds really fake; he mentions how he admires the courage of gamblers. That is alot of boloney. At times he is boastful; the Trump Princess is the best yacht ever built. But hate him or love him, he says it like it is.He seems very vindictive as evident with his numerous attacks on some very famous people throughout the book. But for those who are his friends, he has nothing but praise for them.He doesn't play politics, but what he does do is make deals and makes a whole bunch of them in this book. One of the recurring themes of the book is to wait for the right price even if it means giving it up and not to let emotions dictate the price. In many instances, the deal comes back to him and at an even better price than ever.
