    4-0 out of 5 stars Legacy--4.5 stars
This autobiography is unusual to say the least. It is replete with deep, profound, mystifying, eye-opening, tantalizing personal experiences rather than mundane happenings. It reads, at times, like a fantasy novel.I'd call this powerful book an impressionistic painting of Jung's life and work. It's very personal and very revealing. It's no wonder he left it to the very end of his life.Fortunately for us, he did provide the data & it was posthumously published. It provides a depth of context for his work that is available nowhere else.It is, however, expurgated--presumably by his family who didn't want all his dirty laundry (e.g. affairs with clients etc.) made public. After all, it was published not long after his death. There is much to learn from this book--even by those offended by it.As Jung says, p.247 "Everything that irritates us about others can lead us to an understanding of ourselves."George MacDonald said "Those don't know England who only England know."Jung asks, p. 246 "How, for example, can we become conscious of national peculiarities if we have never had the opportunity to regard our own nation from outside?Regarding it from outside means regarding it from the standpoint of another nation."Similar to his more scientific works, this one contains innovative thinking & timeless observations.
5-0 out of 5 stars You gotta be crazy to analyze crazy people
If a regular person described the things that Jung describes in this biography, you'd say "this person is completely insane".
5-0 out of 5 stars "But Who Manipulates The Apparatus?"
More than any other work in his oeuvre, Carl Jung's biography, Memories, Dreams, Reflections (1961) takes the reader inside the mind of the eminent Swiss psychologist.Jung was both a self-admitted gnostic and an introvert, and this very personal account of his life, which he was completing at the time of his death, is correspondingly subjective in tone.

5-0 out of 5 stars Thank You!
Thanks so much for this book about Jesse Jackson. Jesse Jackson is for himself. He has exploited Black people and used them for his own good. Where ever there is a cause he's present. Not so much for the sake of those involved, but more or less for his own benefit. It's ashame that he has to speak for the common good of man for a fee. Before he speaks he wants to come to a payment agreement. He uses Black people. A Black problem is his gain. Black people please get hip. Jesse Jackson is a pimp in the worse way. He pimps and profits from Black problems.
5-0 out of 5 stars A Great Book about a complete Fraud!
I've always had a thought about "REVERAND" Jackson, and this book proves it! Jesse jackson isn't black -He's just a white man that's so full of s**t tha his body long ago lost the ability to absorb it!

5-0 out of 5 stars Mr Jackson is what Fela Kuti would call a pen robber
If the Abacha/Nigeria/Abiola story revealed in this book is fact, Mr. Jackson should be jailed for the part he played in Abiola's death. Concerning the son, if a congressman earning $26,000 owns 5 cars worth $300,000 it proves the truism that the apple does not fall far from the tree.

    Editorial Review

A biography of Meriwether Lewis that relies heavily on the journals of both Lewis and Clark, this book is also backed up by the author's personal travels along Lewis and Clark's route to the Pacific. Ambrose is not content to simply chronicle the events of the "Corps of Discovery" as the explorers called their ventures. He often pauses to assess the military leadership of Lewis and Clark, how they negotiated with various native peoples and what they reported to Jefferson. Though the expedition failed to find Jefferson's hoped for water route to the Pacific, it fired interest among fur traders and other Americans, changing the face of the West forever. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Vivid and entertaining
When I read this book it helped me get ahead in history amazingly. I may just be one of those odd people, but to me, the 200 year old mistakes and goof-ups were hilarious. Although he is descriptive, Ambrose does not mince words.
5-0 out of 5 stars great book
i loved this book. i knew i would before picking it up, and i wonder if that had anything to do with the 5 star approval on my part. ambrose can tell history like no other. i tried a few other lewis and clark books, but i like a good story rather than history books, and this one is both.

5-0 out of 5 stars Absolutely Wonderful Reading
Stephen Ambrose takes history and turns it into a fascinating, easy read. It was exciting to learn so much while at the same time enjoying every turn. History has never been this much fun! The author writes in such a way that you feel as if you are actually watching the events take place before your very eyes. This is a definate, must read!

5-0 out of 5 stars The most brilliant mind in today's mediocre world
Although this author once bashed a book I had written, I refused to turn away from this writer and miss out on the writings of the most brilliant mind and greatest wordsmith since Winston Churchill.I never tire of seeing him on talk shows where his brillance simply overpowers everyone attempting to put him down.I buy and read every book written by this author, and his output is unbelievable -- obviously thoughts flow from his mind straight onto the page.Reading one of this author's books remind me of being thrust into the midst of a mind feast.Like your mother's best Sunday dinner, it's just impossible to push back.I'm now reading his latest, THOMAS JEFFERSON, and I recommend it, as I highly recommend all of Hitchen's books to you.Jean Sasson, author of Mayada, Daughter of Iraq

4-0 out of 5 stars HItch is so brilliant, I sometimes think that I must be stupid
However, Reading his books, make me feel like I get a chance to understand what it must be like to be brilliant. I loved this book on Jefferson, an easier read than most of his books, becasue I love what Jefferson understood. In spite of the new revisionist history that is being taught today in American schools ( Jefforson came to America for his own financial benfits, he was a slave owner, he raped women, etc. etcl.etc.)I found this book to be refreshing, as it tells of one of the most important founders of this democracy that allows teachers to teach drivel to my child, which I must un-do when he returns home. If I could only get the teachers to read this book, perhaps saying the Pledge of Alligence would not be "nerdy" and would be stated wth pride, as I fear that we are losing our country, to political correctness, lack of values, loss of religion (I know Hitchens hates religion, but we have to agree to disagree)and values of democracy being bitten away by Islam and the desire to resetablish a Caliphate here in America. Read this book, and be proud to live in the best country in the world.

4-0 out of 5 stars Best one-volume biography of a controversial president
Few presidents generate as much debate today as Lyndon Baines Johnson. From relatively humble roots in Texas, he rose to the pinnacle of power in American politics.Brash and domineering to the point of obnoxiousness, he turned the position of Senate majority leader into the key office in that body through a mastery of wheeling and dealing that served him well as president and ensured the passage of a vast range of legislation that transformed the nation.Yet all of this is weighed against the controversial involvement in the Vietnam War, a topic that still triggers fervent discussion.
4-0 out of 5 stars Well written but an amazing number or factual errors
First, let me say that this book is well written and never dull.It is also a fairly objective view of LBJ, very welcome after Caro's multi-volumes of character assassination. The frustrating part of the book, however, is a barrage of incorrect facts, leading to the question of whether anyone actually edited this book.Lister Hill is repeatedly identified as a senator form Florida (he represented Alabama), Huey Long is described, in a very famous episode, as helping Hattie Carraway get elected to the Governorship of Arkansas (she was running for and was elected to the Senate) and Douglas MacArthur is described as a "young brigadier general" at the time he routed the "bonus" army from Washington. He was actually the 52 year old chief of staff of the U.S. Army at this time, holding four star rank.

2-0 out of 5 stars Don't mess with Texas
The author has unearthed a large amount of information, as you would expect from a professional historian and academic. And he wishes to share a lot of it with the reader. His style is flat, clear and in the tradition of some of the better Wikipedia entries. If you are fond of reading histories by David McCullough, think of this as the anti-McCullough.Long paragraphs full of detailed information, and a very long book.Minimal amount of interpretation, synthesis and story-telling.Tough-sledding if, like me, you had the impression from Caro's books that LBJ was an unsavory man whose lack of courage and honor kept him from ending the war when he knew he should. There is a tidal wave of information here, data overload. Not sure what the point is, though.A more thoughtful, interpretative, argumentative approach would have been far better.Do we really need to know everything he did on so many days? ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Too much detail about the design of his shoe.
BUT, if you take anything out of this book, it's the fact that Jordan works harder than his peers, whether it was basketball or business. His inner drive and desire to succeed and give it his all is what I took away from the book.I would skim the parts on shoe design and focus mainly on his words and advice, especially on work ethic.

5-0 out of 5 stars The writings of a one of the Great Americans - a must have!
What a difference of few decades make. When I was a youngster the founders were all revered and taught in school.Nowadays, they are almost ignored and condemned for not conforming to our modern view of morality.Of course, the present view is both arrogant and ignorant because we assume that future generations will believe as we do and lacks the humility to realize that the human condition is fraught with weakness and sin as well as triumph and wisdom.

1-0 out of 5 stars Seriously Lacking
This book was not at all what I expected from Brands, who was a Pulitzer Prize finalist for his biography of Benjamin Franklin, First American. In trying to make an academic biography accessible to the reading public, Brands' writing suffers greatly and becomes far too colloquial. At one point, when discussing Indian-White relations, he goes so far as to call the whites "Palefaces."It was a chore to get through, and while it heightened my knowledge of Jackson, nothing was particularly memorable except what I already knew or, perhaps, the actions I disagreed with (his invasion of Florida or his use of martial law after the Battle of New Orleans).Particularly when discussing Jackson's historically far reaching actions, such as kicking the Cherokees out of Georgia, or his battle with Biddle and eventual destruction of the Bank of the United States, Brands does a deplorable job of explaining what happened.Elements of background, and why Jackson did whatever it was he did exactly, as the reader will be confused on that point, are conspicuously missing.I have read similarly poor reviews of another biography by Brands, TR: The Last Romantic, and if First American is at all similar in style, I know why he didn't win that Pulitzer.

4-0 out of 5 stars Fine Biography of Andrew Jackson
Andrew Jackson was a major figure in American history from his service in the War of 1812 through his presidency. And even in retirement after his departure from Washington, D. C., he was still an important figure in American politics.

5-0 out of 5 stars Amazing and inspiring read!
I was a fan of Angelina's prior to buying this book, but after reading it, I gained more respect for her as a humanitarian worker. This is a fascinating insight into her work with UNHCR as she traveled through several countries and kept a journal. These are her journal entries as she was working within the countries. I couldn't put the book down and learned so much about UNHCR and other orgranizations working within countries. It is well-worth reading and I gurantee that you will learn a tremendous deal about UNHCR and gain respect for the refugees as well as admire Angelina for her work with the agency.

5-0 out of 5 stars Incredible & Horrifying
I admire Angelina Jolie for leaving behind her Hollywood sanctuary to become a Goodwill Ambassador for the UNHCR and taking the trips as she describes in these journals. The stories she tells are so real and scary, it's a sad reminder of what goes on in other parts of the world. Don't expect exceptional writing, but stark reality as noted during the events that Jolie witnessed.I would love to see another set of her journals from trips in later years.

5-0 out of 5 stars Inspiring Book
I've always liked Angelina Jolie but had sometimes had doubt in her charity work as more than a publicity ploy. Once you read this book it is impossible to doubt her sincerity. It is a quick and easy read but still a very good one. As someone wanting to work with NGOs and be a International Social Worker this book just reinforced that going down that track was not only a great idea but much needed. I think everyone should read this book if for nothing else it helps you to realize just how lucky you are. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Terrific Book
Robert Caro is just flat out a great writer.I marvelled at half page paragraphs in which he would paint the most intricate and vivid picture about some minor point.Such economy and elegance.I loved it.Overall, his work on LBJ is just awesome.
5-0 out of 5 stars Can't Wait for the Next Installment!
Absolutely one of the best biographies I have ever read.Fascinating, insightful and brilliantly written! As I finished reading it, I found myself longing for the next installment about the vice presidency and the presidency.I will be reading it as soon as it comes out!

5-0 out of 5 stars Amazing History
Robert Caro has produced another, long masterpiece with the continuation of his biography of Lyndon B. Johnson. This is the second Caro book I have read and the first LBJ book (the other book was The Power Broker, his epic about Robert Moses).

Good book for research, but by itself more a statement of the man who put it together..
4-0 out of 5 stars Jefferson was ahead of his time
This book is an editing of what Thomas Jefferson thought was the real truth buried in the Gospels. He deleted the miracles, resurrection and any strange theological statements he felt was placed in Jesus's mouth at a later date. He was like the Jesus Seminar of the 1800's. I have nothing but respect for Jefferson on having the guts in his time to think for himself and see the logical fallacies in believing in the super natural aspects of the gospels. In reading this I see a lot of similarities to the Gospel of Thomas found at Nag Hammadi in 1946. Jefferson would have been pleased. He searched the Gospels for the "GEMS" the real Jesus spoke and found them.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Must Read
To avoid trying to be inspirational, let me just say this book, along with Norman Thomas Remick's book on Jefferson's secular thinking, "West Point: Thomas Jefferson: Character..." combine to bring the heart and mind of Thomas Jefferson into clear focus, in spite of the fact others still like to portray him to be as mysterious as a sphinx. All of the "Jefferson Bible" books are a must read, but this one I felt was particularly well done. Highly recommended. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Enough to prove the short-sightedness of human hope and human prudence
The War of 1812 is one of the American conflicts that is less well known to the general public.Beyond the White House being burned, the composition of "The Star Spangled Banner" as the British assaulted Fort McHenry at Baltimore, and some vague notions of the Battle of New Orleans (and that from the pop song from 1959 by Jimmy Driftwood and sung by Johnny Horton), it doesn't hold much of a place in our already too weak sense of our own history.
5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent telling of the Battle and those that fought there
Mr Groom has done it again. An excellent telling of this importantbattle, the men involved and he details what the British endured before, during and after the battle. It shed plenty of light on the British side of the fight as well as the other key cast members: Jackson (he sure did hate the British with a passion, Jean Lafitte and company, the various militia groups and esteemed citizenry of New Orleans and elsewhere.
    5-0 out of 5 stars Wellington's FinestHumbled
Many people will recognize Winston Groom as the creator of "Forrest Gump."But Groom is also an accomplished chronicler of military history, and here he applies his considerable narrative talents to the climactic engagement of the War of 1812, the Battle of New Orleans.

    Editorial Review

It's not easy imagining a volume capable of capturing the grace, the joy, the flamboyance, and the wizardry of Michael Jordan, but this hybrid--melding autobiography, celebration, spectacular photography, and cutting-edge graphics--comes awfully close. Like Jordan driving the lane, it's a thing of beauty; harder to analyze than it is to admire, accept, gaze at, and enjoy.Read more

Even if you are not good at something at first then you should not give up and keep on trying untill you get good at the thing. And that you should not just stick with one thing but, try other things. You might be goo
