Not So Much
I had been looking foward to reading this book for quite a while. From the great reviews I've read here and Laurie Notaro's thumbs up (Inside the book), I thought I had picked a winner. Like another reviewer stated, I may have cracked a few smiles but it just was not that funny to me...and I am southern! Bless her heart.

On the Mark
S. Murphy was wrong to give this book only one star!The South does have niches of different culture - if you'll notice, this book also portrays many facets of living in the South!Many of which are RIGHT ON THE MONEY!
Extremely Disappointing
I feel compelled to get in touch right now to let you know that if you have not obtained a copy of We're Just Like You, Only Prettier, I recommend that you do not go to the trouble.This book does not begin to live up to the positive reviews that were listed on Amazon.Having read the book, I am puzzled as to what the title refers.In my opinion, the blather of this book has nothing really to do with being "southern" except for every 10 chapters or so making an oblique reference to "southern".It seems to be rather just a collection of the ramblings of a sort of lazy, not-nearly-on the ball, "rednecky `wannabe' and proud" type person.There's nothing wrong with that, but I am disappointed that this book is/was marketed to be representative of southern culture and literature.I'm no expert on "being Southern".In my opinion, there are no experts on this because each area and region of the south has different characteristics.For what it's worth, I grew up in South Carolina and North Carolina. ... Relatable Disfunctional Perfection
Ok, so not everyone comes from a family written out of an extended family's fortune because of deviant scheming.But that didn't leave me out of feeling a strong connection to the characters in this book.In every hero, villain, or combination, there was something that reminded me of someone I knew, and I laughed out loud.Plus, I was a big fan of "Tough Jews" and "Lake Effect".But it seems as though Mr. Cohen has found a voice he was reaching for earlier.He is concise and witty.And, although it's a personal story, I wasn't able to put the book down, and gleaned the love (and forgiveness) he has for his family.This book is delicious.

Enthralling
Blankets is enthralling and demonstrates what the comic medium can do. This is escapist literature grounded in reality. Craig Thompson makes you identify with the protaganist as he journeys from troubled youth and adolescence to adulthood. Highly recommended, even if you don't normally read comics. It's that good.

A story that comes alive off of the pages and into your heart and mind forever awakening feelings that u might have long hidden
You will completely lose yourself in this story.This is the type of story you can read at a horrible place like the doctor's office and completely forget where you are!This is a true life story.A story about a first love and growing up in general, but also in a very religious family.This book will make you laugh, make you want to cry, and make you feel completely at peace.I was genuinely upset when this book ended.I read it in 3 days!I almost want to read it again because the photos contain so much emotion and useful background that they are worth a second look.I took a lot away from this story that I will not soon forget.It awakened feelings in me and it will do the same for any and everyone that is human!Do not miss out on this one.Up until this point I was yet to find a graphic novel that I could really get into.I found storylines to be lacking and conclusions abrupt.This one was truly magical.(and its super cheesy that I just wrote that, but it's true)

compulsive reading
This is one of two graphic novels that have intensely gripped me and opened up to me a whole new literary world. (The other was Posy Simmond's 'Gemma Bovary'.) I'm often bewildered by comics which either have an interesting story but boring artwork, or tales with lovely artwork but which are nearly impossible to follow or have few references I can understand, or are just too male. This novel transcended all those difficulties.

Charming Coming of Age Story
Phillip Hoose remembers just about everything about growing up in Speedway, Indiana, during the height of the 1950s.In fact the clarity of his recollection is suspiciously clear, unless he remembers every schoolyard insult with Sony Trinitron transparency.But I think creative nonfiction has reached a point where we give our authors a lot of rope, and let them make up dozens of re-imagined conversations without doubting the substance overmuch.In young Hoose's case, he was a chubby little bespectacled kid with a passion for baseball that didn't cut him much ice when his father's job caused the family to movie to Speedway.But his stock rose dramatically when his dad revealed that Don Larsen, the Yankees pitcher, was a first cousin.
A Remarkable Story Well Told
Perfect, Once Removed, by Phillip Hoose is a delightful book, both because of what it is, and what it's not, and because it far transcends being just another book about baseball.

Beautifully Written
Those of us who have a story to share should do so, and this story is beautifully written; WHAT REMAINS is a unique one, worth telling, and would be even if it did not involve America's single most famous family. The details Carole Radziwill reveals are intimate, yet never give away more than those connected and still living would find intrusive. At times her pain is almost palpable, and she seems still slightly bewildered about her life and the tragic turn it took during the summer of 1999. The very fact that she did live it and came through it gives her every right to tell about it, and I am glad she chose to do so.

A Moving Memoir Of Love & Death
This is not the memoir of Carole Radziwill. It is a memoir for each person who reads the moving story.
In the end, did they have in common besides ABC news?
In one of what appears to be Carole Radizwill's not-so-subtle jabs at her mother-in-law (and at many of the extended family), she implies Lee wondered what exactly her son saw in Carole ... something along the lines of "how much do they have in common beides ABC?"After finishing this book, I have to say I have no idea what, if anything, they did have in common, nor, more importantly, what it was that first caused them to fall in love.While I can understand and appreciate the author's reservations about revealing too much of their personal relationship, I think she fails to convey why they even had any relationship in the first place.As has been commented on by many reveiwers, she sounds much more passionate when she writes of Carolyn Bessette Kennedy (again, not in a lesbian way, but in an idealized school-girl crush way).I found myself wondering if they really were as close as Carole portrays, or if this book is a rather sad attempt to publicly attach herself to Carolyn forever. ... a Cape Cod time machine
George Howe Colt has written an amazing book of a family hoping to hold on to the past through a home that truly is a "time machine." Things don't get fixed, or picked up or even updated for fear of changing what was into what could be.
The Big House: A Century in the Life of an American Summer House
I loved the first part of the book describing how the house came to be and the great vacations spent in it. I was not hapy with the later emphasis on the elite Boston family from which the author is descended. I never could keep the ancestors straight! I love Cape Cod and that's why I selected the book.
The end of an era
"The Big House" is a delightful read for all those who have known (or wished they had known) the joys and magic of inhabiting for a time each season the classic shingle-style (or its equivalent)summer places. WASP's, that endangered species, will especially enjoy Colt's log of a century of family life on the shores of Buzzards Bay; and the traditions, habits, pleasures and sorrows of a large family struggling to keep up appearances as the world they have known crumbles around them. Leaves you wanting more....
This book is such a page-turner that at 3am I had to force myself to stop.It is a wonderful memoir about her growing up and her various media jobs.I enjoyed the sections on her family as much if not more than the sections on her interviews with stars, musicians, etc.I appreciated that it was not a tell-all or flaunting the witnessing of the seedy side of the celebrity lifestyles.It was simply written to engage the reader with the warmer side of those covered in Rolling Stone, US Weekly, etc. and to see how the girl-next-door gets caught up in the party til dawn lifestyle and yet she was broke the downward spiral to return back to herself.In spite of that, this is not a depressing book, rather an very fun and fast ride.If you want something that shows you the real side of stars you've grown up with but can do without the vulgar language, sexual exploits, sensationalism and dirty laundry then this is the book for you!I sincerely hope there is a sequel!!

Highly enjoyable!
In "But Enough About Me: A Jersey Girl's Unlikely Adventures Among the Absurdly Famous," Jancee Dunn wrote about how it was for her to work as a reporter/columnist for Rolling Stones magazine, where her biggest responsibility was to interview famous celebrities. The book read like a memoir of her growing her in New Jersey, never finishing college and somehow landed a job in Rolling Stones. She also chronicled her career from then on and besides writing about her career, she also provided details about her love life (or sometimes the lack of it).
Pleasant and irreverant memoir
Let me state upfront that I had never heard about Jancee Dunn before, but when I saw this book, and reading the inside flap teaser about her writing for Rolling Stone and other magazines, I just couldn't resist picking it up.

The best emotional and spiritual support for artists
I read this book so long ago but still reference it often. This book explains how to live with many universal feelings and experiences of being a writer/artist. Cameron's writing has helped me make crucial decisions, bolstered me when motivation waned, taught me that insecurity comes with the territory, shown me to contain my work until it's ready to withstand critiques, when group support is not supportive, and how to set boundaries to improve productivity. I'm grateful to Cameron's generosity in teaching many things I didn't have to stumble over myself until I figured them out.
The Next Step
I read and completed the exercises in THE ARTIST WAY about ten years ago--and it changed my life. I'm an admitted self-help junkie, but Julia Cameron goes way, way beyond the typical self-help hype. Her words resonate like a tuning fork against my sternum.
THIS BOOK IS EXACTLY WHAT I NEEDED
Get this book if you are STUCK. Or even if you just need something new to inspire you in the wee hours... For me, it was like a tonic after a long period of not feeling very creative. After reading only the first few chapters, I realized that I WAS feeling creative, but I had definitely stifled my impulses. I read The Artist's Way years ago and loved it, but "poo-poohed" the morning pages (oh no! more work! who needs that! yuk...). Then, after reading the first chapter of Cameron's sequel,I got up one morning and sat, practically pouting in my pajamas with pen in hand. "Ha!" I thought, "I still won't have anything to say!" And then the stuff started pouring out in my scrawls. Then, toward the end of my three pages, I was using ALL CAPS to express repressed wishes and hopes. That same day I began to take action out of the energy and innate confidence, and believe it or not, things began to "happen." I continue to find the book very motivating in this very way...it makes me want to get on with things and stop hesitating. There is a bit of magic in doing what she proposes that is something that you won't be able to explain. And, this book is not only for artists--it is for anyone who wants to move forward. A very special read - I related to every word Firoozeh wrote
This book was a gift from a colleague; at the time I was reading 3 other books - business and biographies - I had to put them down as I started reading Firoozeh's stories. It was truly as if she was writing my experiences, my stories, my sadness, my happiness, my joys and my disappointments, but most of all my gratitude over the years, as I grew up Iranian in America....! This book brought me to tears and made me laugh, and now my husband is reading it. I was so moved I emailed Firoozeh, to which she responded in less than 1 day - she was just as wonderful in email as I had imagined her to be from her stories. The stories will stay with me. This is truly a special read. I so highly recommend for everyone.

It’s best to know this from the start: Augusten Burroughs is mean. Augusten Burroughs is also outrageously X-rated. If you can get past those two things, Burroughs might just be the most refreshing voice in American books today, and his collection of acerbic essays will have you laughing out loud even while cringing in your seat. Whether he is stepping on the fingers of little children or giving you the blow-by-blow on a very unholy act, Burroughs manages to do it in a way that fills conflicted fans with both horror and glee. I Love This Guy!!
Augusten Burroughs is hilarious. He says the things I am thinking and have thought about in the past. His pop culture references are dead-on. I would recommend this book to most 30-somethings and up who will really relate to his comments about Donny and Marie, Tony Olando, and Flair pens. His writing is not for the faint of heart, however, and I wouldn't suggest this book to my parents, or any of their friends for that matter. But for open-minded, not easily offended adults there is no one today who can beat Burroughs at his genre. Check this book out, you'll be hooked!!

I just finished reading this book and I didn't want it to end. It was truly hilarious. True, Augusten Burroughs doesn't appear apologetic or like he "learned a lesson" from his experiences but that's exactly what I like about him. Lessons are overrated. Humor is underrated. I laughed out loud while reading this on the eliptical machine at the gym and almost lost my footing which helped me learn a lesson; next time I'm exercising better stick to Newsweek.

Goes back and forth between pathetic and funny. Too much of the former.
I don't for a second believe that Burroughs is telling the truth about his life -- but I gobbled up his other books anyway.He's funny and there's something endearing about the way he writes -- yes he's gay, and yes that necessarily "colors" his worldview -- but talking about a job you hate, a family you loathe, and a partner who amazingly tolerates you are necessarily universal.

Absorbing and real
I found the book exciting and moving. Of course any book can not describe all events in great detail . But what it chooses to describe, it does well in a straightforward approach. The narration is simple and to the point, which is what I like.

A GREAT STORY BUT POORLY WRITTEN AND POORLY EDITED...
This is a book that on its face held a lot of promise. Any story in which a mother and her children, as well as faithful family retainers, are unjustly imprisoned in squalid conditions for twenty years for an ostensible crime comitted by the familial patriarch would certainly be of interest. Wrong! This is a tepid and disappointing book, poorly written and, most certainly, poorly edited. It is so filled with contraditions and inconsistencies, as to create somewhat of a credibility gap for the reader.
Engrossing story worthy of notice--but horribly written
I honestly didn't finish this book.

Interesting
I found the book to be very interesting and well-written. It explained a lot of different reasons why people have heart attacks and heart problems. But, I was ultimately disappointed because Dr. Guarnei didn't give any suggestions on how patients could help themselves. Well, yes, certainly one could move to the San Diego area and attend her alternative healing sessions - at $50.00 a pop - and you have to do two to three a week! Not for nothing is the site located in one of the wealtiert communities in the nation - La Jolla. I'm sure a lot of heart patients wish they had an extra $600 a month to learn to breathe. I would have been more empressed if the doctor had included a section of things real, normal people can do.

If we listen to the patient, they will provide their diagnosis....
Dr. Guarneri's book The Heart Speaks is full of realities in patient health. It is interesting to me to see the journey that Dr. Guarneri has made to provide quality of care rather than quantity of care to her patients. She has had to challenge what she has been taught and believed in order to develop as a doctor. She has had to adjust her own life so that she can try to understand what her patients need.
Excellent book, much needed in medicine
I loved this book. The Author takes you through her life in such a way that you understand medical school, her background and the philosophy in medicine we all live with. More importantly she details her transformation to a balanced view of medicine and what is needed today with a more spiritual, healing side along with the science. She also gives us a ground breaking view of the heart - which pardon the pun, but it will do your heart good. Excellent work. ... Read more

A rare glimpse into the Heian mindset and lifestyle
The Pillow Book and the Tale of Genji continue to amaze me--they are each a thousand (!) years old and yet continue to captivate generations not only in their native Japan but around the world.One can easily picture Sei Shonagon being secretly quite pleased by her Pillow Book's popularity, all the while blushingly pleading her embarrassment that her modest writings have seen the light of day.

A lot of spirit is lost in translation. I would like to discribe the text anyway as, personal, very feminin, sometimes poetic, impressionistic and emotional.

A tour de force into a secretive world...
What I got out of this book was insight into a world of submission, dominace and BDSM. It is about a relationship, too, and has similar tones (in my opinion) to the "Story of O". However, the relationship isn't all just based on pain--giving and receiving.
Where was the editor?
Technically this was an exercise in tautology, and albeit the author admits that they are events not presented chronologically/linerally, the whole thing came off as a repetitive scrapbook of free associative ramblings. Cultural allusions were off and revealed just a shallow dip into areas of interest; just deep enough to create a character for a sexual fantasy.

More Like Kafka

An engrossing, condemning eyewitness account
The author was a second-generation British Muslim born and raised in England, and was seized from his family home in Pakistan in 2002, accused by the U.S. of being a terrorist, and held for over three years. His story of his imprisonment and detention including two years at Guantanamo Bay provides the first account by a detainee of life inside the prison. From his intense interrogations to his release in 2005, this account is co-authored by Victoria Brittain, former foreign editor of the UK Guardian, and provides an engrossing, condemning eyewitness account of the US prison system and civil rights pertaining to terrorist suspects.
1/3 through the book - this is a poorly edited book
So far, I've made it through about a hundred pages, and this book sounds hollow and fake. The author jumps around in his timeframes, and by changing his vocabulary and perspective, makes it very difficult for the reader to keep a perspective on his actions and history.

extraordinary American memoir
I read the book (536 pages) in 4 or 5 sittings. To me it's a masterpiece. Yes, it is a bit slow going in the beginning but then the story takes off. I found Jentz's book to be overwhelmingly rich in symbolism of the forces between good and evil. Also present are the themes all of us can relate to in small town everyday American life. I couldn't stop reading it. I found myself completely drawn into the awesome horror, bewildering twists and eyebrow-knitting circumstances that occurred during and after the attack. The research done for this book is compelling by itself.
an exploration of evil and violence
Strange Piece of Paradise is true crime with a supremely ironic twist-the true crime story is written not by an investigative reporter or a psychologist, but by the victim. Terri Jentz has managed to cope with the absolute horror of an incredibly vicious attack by facing the situation head on. Her assailant was never apprehended, and many years later she returned to the small town where she and a college roommate experienced such extreme violence that the roommate refused to ever discuss it. The result of Terri's investigation is a profound book exploring a society that promulgates violence and evil.
Read In Cold Blood
I am on the last leg of this book, much to my relief.It is terribly over-written, redundant and irritating to read.
