5-0 out of 5 stars Be Careful
This oft insightful, oft hilarious, oft irreverant book is a great read.I read it first over Christmas, and now I'm reading it with many of my Navajo students. They love it for his erudition and frankness.
5-0 out of 5 stars hysterical and insightful
lame deer's take on the white man's world is so truthful, poignant, and hilarious, make sure you are at liberty to laugh out loud when you pick it up. every few pages will have you smiling, chuckling, if not uproariously laughing while you put the book down, only to pause and then re-read the section for the pure delight of his frank and funny portrayl of a life as a holy man that ranges from wild and wreckless, somber and lonely, to mild and mature. but it's always funny and insightful! i highly recommend!!

5-0 out of 5 stars It is what it is
Pretty coffee table book...don't buy for the recipes unless you are a professional.I am a chef and have been at several for and five star establishments.I had the pleasure a few years ago to do a banquet with Susur and he is the real deal. Will his techniques translate to the amateur cook looking to learn from his book? No.These are professional recipes designed to be executed by a top class brigade with years of technique and time to prepare the needed mis en place. But as a professional, the way he approaches food as well as the culinary foundation that he has built for himself is unique and will be appreciated by those in the know. What isn't pretentious about a $50 coffee table book? This book gives exposure to a unique and talented chef who is grounded in solid technique and is able to translate that into well presented and balanced dishes that are not silly fusion.Definetly worth a look.

5-0 out of 5 stars Susur Lee
This book its all about creativity by a man who has been over looked for too many years as one of the worlds Top Chefs. This book is in one simple word "Awesome"

5-0 out of 5 stars Susur: Some Thoughts on Perfection in Cuisine
Given the acidity of previous reviews, let me start with some background on myself: I am an American not resident in Canada; I am a non-professional chef -- I cook for myself, my family and my friends. I love food, both from the philosophy that one can learn the history of a country or region by learning about its cuisine and from the perspective that I truly believe we are what we eat ... and the miserable record of American health and longevity is directly due to the poor quality of what we consume.

1-0 out of 5 stars I was born in Mexico and faced similar issues. This is awful.
Richard Rodriguez whines and complains in his book.I have similar experiences. I was born in Mexico.I was reared in America and went to Catholic schools.I have a darker than average complexion.People often ask me what country I was born in just by looking at me, but that did not warp my wife like it seemed to for Rodriguez. I have a friend who went to Stanford, like Rodriguez, on scholarship, but he did not whine about it.I googled Rodriguez and found a published speech where he continues to show weak character. Here is a quote from one of his speeches: "... if you really want to scare the United States of America, all you would have to say to the United States of America is "I'm going to marry you. I'm going to start dating your son." "This is pretty sad and tasteless.Besides showing weak character, Rodriguez is a poor writer.I have never seen so many sentence fragments. At one point in his book he admits he never liked writing when he was in school. It shows. This book is an insult to the Latin-American community from a condescending publisher. We deserve better.
1-0 out of 5 stars I hate this book.
This is one of the worst books I have ever read. I understand that is fine writing, but the book is tasteless. I find Rodriguez arrogant and lonely. Is he trying to say that the turning point of his life was when the nun's came to his parents home. I hate this book it is one of my worst reads ever.

5-0 out of 5 stars A superb job of capturing with words what many of us (first and second generation Americans) feel
I return to this book 8 years after I read if for the first time. Within minutes I find myself recalling the Sunday brunches my parents used to prepare for our entire family, the joyful sounds of my growing up in Virginia, after spending my early years in Eastern Europe. I intimately know the things Mr. Rodriguez writes about, because I've experienced them.

5-0 out of 5 stars Breaking the bonds of slavery
This nonfiction revels in importance simply because of its magnitude in not only the fight against slavery in the latter part of the 1800s (and the subsequent abolition), but also because of its brutal honesty for an individual who should be considered an ancestor of civil rights. Fredrick Douglass narrates in detail many of the terrors, horrors, and injustices that he and those around him had to endure during his years as a slave in Maryland. He describes the beatings, whippings, tortures and even deaths that he was close to and had no power to stop.He makes the point that slaveholders gained control over slaves by dehumanizing them, making them ignorant against their own accord, and ultimately having control over them. Frederick does everything in his power to negate this dehumanization, and begins to learn to read and write, but with more knowledge gained he has a stronger sense of loathing those who enslave him: "The more I read, the more I was led to abhor and detest my enslavers. I could regard them in no better light than a band of successful robbers who had left their homes, and gone to Africa, and stolen us from our homes..."
5-0 out of 5 stars Would you like to be a slave?
I have a doctorate and enjoy reading as my favorite past time. This book is one of my all time favorites and it was very intelligently written by an exslave. For all of you who mistakenly think that maybe some people were better off as slaves, you should really read this book.I plan to give it to one relative! The pain and frustration he felt will tear at your heart. Since we all look the same on the inside it amazes me that society could ever let this happen to anyone. The drama and plot are gripping and the vocabulary is first rate. His soul now rests above while this book serves to enlighten us all!

5-0 out of 5 stars Go get it.Read it.Learn.
No matter where you are from, what color you are, or what you think is important - if you have not done so, do yourself a favor and read this brief story. If you are an American and do not know of the life of one of America's greatest heroes, then please pick up a copy and read his story. Remember his story-and remember why we hold freedom so dear. If you are from anywhere else, this is your chance to read a true story, like none other, of a man, who, by his own human nature detests the bonds of slavery, and through incredible daring, indefatigable strength and unrelenting intellect, secures his own freedom. It is an easy and quick read (I went through it in a couple hours) but it is also a must read. This is truly a unique and unvarnished look at the terrors, tortures and dehumanization of slavery in Maryland, the fortitude and zeal of the northern abolitionists who safeguarded Douglass and the ultimate triumph of the human spirit over the forces of ignorance and bondage. An eye-opener, emotionally gut wrenching and, finally, uplifting.(For parents and teachers: It is also The Perfect Book to encourage reading!) ... Read more

SPIRIT OF HARLEM:A Portrait of America's Most Exciting Neighborhood5-0 out of 5 stars definitely worth buying
This book has fascinating stories of ordinary and extraodinary people. For each person interviewed, there is a picture or 2 and a story told by that individual. The writer did an excellent job at capturing these stories in first person...i felt like I was actually sitting in front of these people and listening to them tell me about a moving incident, their childhood, reflections on life... Some of these stories made me laugh and some made me cry.It was a neat experience to "meet" all these interesting people. The photography is beautiful

5-0 out of 5 stars A stark and revealing insight into the banality of evil
Ably translated by Carol Scherer and edited by Karl Schleunes, Legislating The Holocaust: The Bernhard Loesener Memoirs And Supporting Documents is the direct, recorded testimony of Bernhard Loesener. This is the man who personally drafted much of the legislation that disenfranchised and dehumanized the Jews of Nazi Germany. He also kept the minutes of inter-ministerial conferences concerned with the "Jewish Question." In 1950, Bernhard Loesener penned a memoir in which he sought to explain and justify his actions, as well as professing his horror of the Final Solution to which he so thoroughly and directly contributed. First published in 1961, Loesener's memoir has never appeared in English until now. Also included are an introduction and lengthy notes by editor Karl A. Schleunes, as well as Loesener's testimony before the Nuremberg Tribunal. An invaluable contribution to Holocaust studies and reference collections, Legislating The Holocaust is a stark and revealing insight into the banality of evil, and the bureaucratic mechanics of facilitating mass murder. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Template for Philanthropy - Now Being followed by Gates and Buffett
An absorbing account of Julius Rosenwald's rise in the mail-order world of merchandise and the changing world of class, politics and culture. Here was a man who made millions at the turn of the 20th Century and proceeded to give it to society in areas where he felt it lacked.A must read for all of those involved with and interested in the world of philanthropy, the African-American experience and history.

5-0 out of 5 stars The definitive biography of Rosenwald
Julius Rosenwald: The Man Who Built Sears, Roebuck And Advanced The Cause Of Black Education In The American South by Peter M. Ascoli (an academician and the grandson of Julius Rosenwald) is the definitive biography of Rosenwald, a pioneer not only in transforming Sears, Roebuck into the greatest mail-order firm in the world, but also in philanthropy. He helped build more than 5,300 schools in the American South, among other efforts to improve the lives of his fellow citizens such as the Rosenwald Fund. Exhaustively researched and packed cover to cover with minute detail, Julius Rosenwald is highly recommended reading given its author's considerable accomplishments in business and humanitarian spheres alike.
5-0 out of 5 stars A book that needed to be written
This is a fascinating book about a man who was a well-known business man and philanthropist in his day and is all but unheard of today. In his well-researched and interestingly written account of Julius Rosenwald, Peter Ascoli vividly portrays a man who was ambitious, idealistic, groundbreaking in many ways, and humble. While JR, as the author calls him, is known mainly for his excellent management and leadership at Sears, it was his philanthropy that made JR stand out.In these days of the super rich, business scandals such as Enron, and Warren Buffet's recent gift to the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, this story of an upstanding business man with morals, and a humble philanthropist this is biography is extremely relevent, and it is a story that needed to be told. ... This heartbreaking and inspiring book goes a long way toward fulfilling the wish one of its authors, LeAlan Jones, makes in his epigraph: "You must learn our America as we must learn your America, so that, maybe, someday, we can become one." It tells the story of the authors, LeAlan Jones and Lloyd Newman, as they make their way in the Ida B. Well's housing project and tell the story of a five year-old's death from one of the buildings. The book, which was written by the boys in collaboration with author David Isay, is part journalism, part activism and part reflection. It takes a very factual look at the events of the child's death, there are transcriptions from interviews, and there are their own ramblings and editorializing about what's going on in their part of the country.
5-0 out of 5 stars This book is so sad.
We read this book in school and I felt really bad for the kids. I don't know what I would have done if something like that happened to someone I know.
4-0 out of 5 stars South Side Chicago- Pocket Books-1997
This telling account of life on the south side of Chicago is worth reading to catch a glimpse of the struggles and hardships that marginalize this south side community. The narrative and accounts of life in Chicago's public housing complexes unveil the social conflict that is tucked away from viewing and ignored by outsiders.

5-0 out of 5 stars Blood Brothers:Recommended to anyone
Loved it!I would recommend it to anyone who hasn't heard a Christian Palestinian perspective on this issue. This book is one of the best on this topic that I have read.

3-0 out of 5 stars A Case Study in Hope
It seems that much has been written about the Middle East in terms of religion, culture, history, economics, geopolitical significance, etc.But it seems very little has been written about the region in terms of brotherhood. The notion almost rankles upon first utterance, yet Elias Chacour, a Christian Palestinian approaches the topic from this rather unique perspective.Having experienced the destruction of his home village of Biram by Israeli soldiers in 1951, one would expect him to have something to say. While portraying injustices honestly, he refuses to draw harsh generalizations. As Israeli soldiers or Zionist groups such as the Irgun destroy local villages, Chacour notes the sentiment of the native Jewish people in the area who were "shocked and disgusted" and who protested such activities via their religious leaders.Although the book is not enthralling in terms of literary quality, it is compelling in terms of ideas.5-0 out of 5 stars A personal interaction with the Israeli/Palestinian conflict
I would recommend this book to everybody. It gives us a fair, and much needed, insight into the Palestinian Christian perspective within the greater framework of the Middle East conflict. The personal testimony and example that Elias Chacour gives us is compelling and convicting. What if we all started to act with the faith, love and renconcilation Elias promotes in this inspiring account of his life. Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars rite of passage
I disagree with the "tad tedious" review. I just finished this book and felt uplifted by Robin's honesty about her transitions through life. The book is well-written -- her ability to intertwine her struggle with her own identity and religous hunger with her dad's illness is amazing. I hope to read more books by her.

3-0 out of 5 stars A TAD TEDIOUS...
This is a book that, at times, was ofsome interest, but, overall, I found it to be a tad tedious. The author, who is half Jewish, as her father was Jewish while her mother was Christian, had a mid-life crisis that manifested itself in the desire to find her Jewish roots and lead a life with a religious bent. What she seemed to have done was simply substitute religion for the place that drugs used to have in her life, as religion seems to provide for her the panacea that makes her life worth living.
4-0 out of 5 stars An exodus from rootlessness
Nobody plans to stumble across God in an unexpected place, least of all someone who doesn't believe in God at all.

4-0 out of 5 stars Life of a Japanese American during Relocation
I found this book intriguing. Uchida vividly explains her childhood as a Japanese American and illustrates the need to conform, like any other young child. As she ages, she realizes that her heritage can never be erased, and she is soon penalized for this, a thing she cannot help.
4-0 out of 5 stars Not so invisible any more, thank goodness
In addition to her writings about the Japanese and Japanese-American culture, Yoshiko Uchida wrote several fiction books that drew from her experiences as a Japanese American during World War II. The Invisible Thread, written for young adults, is an autobiography that tells of her life before, during her family's internment in a camp in Utah.
4-0 out of 5 stars Amazingly Addicting!
I'm only 12, so if you do not wish to read my review, I understand. However, I still wish to express my feelings of this book. I, normally, am not the type of person who reads autobiograpies or biographies, so I wasn't very excited when I discovered we would be starting a unit on them in school. However, the further I read in this book, the less "dull" it seemed. Though I didn't find the beginning very interesting, I quite enjoyed he book as I read on. I soon felt what I think the author did at that time. I was ashamed to discover what the United States Government did to the poor Japanese-Americans. I found that this book was hard to put down, even at 1:00 A.M. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars This is a must-use for any middle school classroom!
This true story written from the perspective of an 11-year-old immigrant, truly sums up the immigrant perspective. My 4th grade students, journaled each day as if he or she were the central character, and begged for each of the five chapters. This book alone, replaced a 4-week unit that I had used previously to emphasize the impact of immigration on our state.Written by the author's daughter, with photos showing then and now, it is wonderful.FYI: We used, as the final journal entry, an account written by Yehuda when he finds his journal 70 years later and recounts the years since arriving in America.

5-0 out of 5 stars Character traits nicely parallel our school's program.
The story reads well for any student needing to understand the trials and tribulations of people immigrating to the U.S.Important character traits are developed and their importance in reaching a goal are emphasized. Theartwork makes a dramatic statement to anyone who opens the book. Elementarystudents should be attracted by this outstanding feature. As a schooldirector and recently retired teacher, I purchased a copy for each of ourelementary libraries because of the qualiy of this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great book for all ages!
This review is from Debbie,Paul,Ryan and Melissa. We all modelled for the illustrator,Laurie McGaw, of this book. It was a wonderful experience since some of our grandparents left Russia and Poland because of the war and wefelt we could relate to the people in the book. The book has been presentedto the our childrens' school in conjunction with the Holocaust unit.Teachers and kids alike found the book to be very interesting andbeautifully illustrated. We recommend it to all nationalities and ages.Itis not only a book about Jewish people, but also a book about what anyimmigrants coming to North America might have experienced. ... Read more
