Editorial Review

In 1975, four teenagers from Mount Temple School in Dublin gathered in a crowded kitchen to discuss forming a band. The drum kit just about fit into the room, the lead guitarist was playing a homemade guitar, the bassist could barely play at all and nobody wanted to sing. Over thirty years later, Bono, The Edge, Adam Clayton and Larry Mullen Jr. are still together, bound by intense loyalty, passionate idealism and a relentless belief in the power of rock and roll to change the world.

5-0 out of 5 stars U2 from the Band Members.
I can't express enough how GLAD I am to own this book. The photographs are exceptional and personal, and the band members open and up front about their (very) humble beginnings, all the way to stardom... which doesn't impress them much. It is the perfect Time for this book. The Band's willingness to put together this volume is a gift to the millions of us who have been touched by the greatest rock band in all the history of rock 'n' roll.

5-0 out of 5 stars A gift to the world!
I would like to thank U2 for giving us this book. It really made me feel part of their history together. I've been a U2 fan for more than half of my life and looking at those amazing pictures, reading their own words is priceless. If you like U2 is the perfect thing for you to have; if you don't, after reading this book you will.
5-0 out of 5 stars The Beatles Anthology Book Done U2 Style
If anyone here owns the Beatles Anthology companion book to the TV series/CD's, this isn't much different. The story is "written" by the band, quotes culled from over 150 hours of interviews done for Neil McCormick. Every phase of the band's career, from it's earliest days straight through to "How to Dismantle an Atomic Bomb" is told solely through quotes from each band member, making this is as definitive, brutally honest, unflinching and uncompromising a book on the band as we'll ever see. These aren't moments plagiarized from magazine articles or other books, but personal recollections.

5-0 out of 5 stars behind andy's camel
Out of all The Police guys, Andy had the most wicked sense of humor. He saw, and still sees, things a tad differently than the rest of us. Having chatted with him a few times in person, I can say he is a most interesting man. I had no idea he wrote so well. I was a bit surprised when I heard this book was coming out. Andy, despite his mischief in The Police, always seemed the most private of the three. I also learned a few things I didn't know. And,to me,that's incredible. I have listened to his music since I was a teenager. Part of his appeal as a guitarist is his love for his instrument, of course. But Andy is also one of those rare performers that thinks more of "the song." He's not a flashy-solo kinda guy. The song is more important than any one member's part in it. A highly enjoyable read to be sure.

4-0 out of 5 stars Rock 'n' Roll Story
When I was in junior high, The Police was one of the biggest bands in the world and I was a huge fan.I had grown up listening mainly to sixties music like the Beatles, Simon & Garfunkel, etc.The Police was the first band I came to on my own and from my own era.No music group before or since has meant as much to me.
5-0 out of 5 stars A funny blitz-force adventure of the highest order!
This is an amazing "life story" told with heaping amounts of humor and insight -- easily accessible to both the hardcore Police fan, and the reader simply interested in gaining perspective on the churnings of themusic business amidst a more spiritual pursuit.Andy uses his fantastic sense of humor to great effect here.I was constantly giggling at the absolute mayhem surrounding him at every turn.I had no idea he was such a roving wild man -- but from the man who wrote the classic "Behind My Camel" -- who would expect otherwise.I admire someone who enjoys Spinal Tap and Camus.

4-0 out of 5 stars Bad Vibrations
Hopefully this is the final book on a genius, Brian Wilson. There's not much more to say and this book's fault is it may say it in much too much detail.Brian Wilson, founder of the Beach Boys and brilliant composer/arranger begins a descent into drugs and mental illness.Everyone knows the story. What this book does is not tell the surface story but rather give every detail of virtually every song written as well as the band member relationships focusing mainly on the dysfunction.
5-0 out of 5 stars The best book on Brian Wilson to date

5-0 out of 5 stars A Hard Book To Put Down, A Joy To Read
This is a great book for any Beach Boys/Brian Wilson fan. As a hardcore fan like myself you may want more detail but he points out other sources like Timothy White's book "The Nearest Faraway Place" where he drew information and where I am headed next after finishing this one. You really end up feeling like you know Brian Wilson and his bandmates after reading this. You get a real picture of what happened- this is extremely fluid- really well done. There are a few areas that would have been nice to have more detail on, like David Marks for example, although he is interviewed here. The book is good enough though that I would buy the next edition which I hope might include the reunion of Wilson/Love/Jardine/Marks/Johnston on the rooftop of Capital Records recently and the Wilson/Jardine reunion for the mini Pet Sounds tour. ... Right in time for the Grateful Dead's 40th anniversary, eccentric bass player extraordinaire Phil Lesh has delivered fans a most welcome gift: his autobiography. There are many books out there about the Dead told from the perspective of roadies, journalists, third party observers, and fans. However, with the exceptions of Jerry Garcia's ramblings in Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Phil Rules
Another good biography looking into the world of the dead
4-0 out of 5 stars Honest, melancholy, emotional
I was only a minor league dead head, but Phil Lesh's bass was always a huge part of why I loved the Dead's music.I listened to this book on audio cd, so I got to hear Lesh himself read his words. His writing style takes a little getting used to, sometimes overwrought, academic and even clumsy. But that becomes easy to forgive as the story of the 30 odd year journey he took with the Dead unfolds. The magic of the beginnings, the breakthrough into full "group mind" improvisation, the meltdown of the summer of love, the disappointments of their major appearances (Lesh regrets staying in the van at Altamont, and reports that due to tech difficulties no one could hear them at Woodstock), the growth into a stadium touring band, and the grind of touring leading them all into drug use.
5-0 out of 5 stars I found the sound.

5-0 out of 5 stars 2 Live Crue!
I only listen to music that I can do The Sprinkler to. Testify! (And I don't mean a literal sprinkler, like the Crue did in Hotel rooms and fruit bowls). But Motley Crue does heavy metal. So what does this fan of rap and GQ sweatsuits (me) think of these frazzled tomcats? Not much.At least regarding their music. But as writers, they have a certain sizzle! As DJ Spry sampled from the once great Billy Joel, "Honesty is such a lonely word. And mostly what I want from you." These Crue boys bring the honesty uncut, and let it flow like Kristal down the Sunset gutter! My, my, my look what the cat dragged in, STRAIGHT up! Like most rappers, the Crue get more tail than an Addams house cat, write LARGE cliche song hooks, and party. (Nikki gets busy with Prince muse Vanity!). Unlike most rappers, they get into hard drugs and don't dress very dapper or even fly.(The book has lots of pics and full page glossies -- what the?!).And unlike ANY rappers, they write a lot about psychotherapy stuff. Rappers building a commercial empire don't have time for that, nowatimsayn?!! But the Crue are white, and we see that they're human... and every rose has its thorn.
5-0 out of 5 stars Loved this book, didn't even like Motley Crue before this.....
I recommend this book to anybody who is interested on the real life of rock and roll bands who don't burn out and break up after one or two years.Being in a band is like being married to 4 people. It is hard to get along, but they managed to do it without killing each other or themselves. It got hairy at the end between Vince and Tommy, Vince trying to snitch on Tommy to get him thrown back in jail, what a pansy! But from the beginning to the end, there just wasn't any boring spots.I could have done without the "shooting" remarks, I'll let the readers figure that one out.But I just ignore that stuff and stuck to the literary genius these guys put out. Many Kudo's.You will love this book too.

5-0 out of 5 stars What a page turner.
I just loved this book. Neil Strauss and the motley crue boys have a written a masterpiece.

5-0 out of 5 stars Sex,Drugs, and.... More Sex!
I absolitely LOVE the RHCP's, and I love this book. Though it's more about sex and drugs than anything else, it does take you inside the mind of a real rock star, and shows the rises and loads of downfalls stardom can take you to. i would recommend this book to anyone who loves the RHCP, it's a real eye opener.

4-0 out of 5 stars What I Like About Scar Tissue
In this dissertation on the first forty years of his time on planet earth, Anthony Kiedis neither glorified his life(style) nor used what he had to say about it as a platform to make the point, "See how low I sank?" Kiedis was simply honest and left, one frequently gets the impression, nothing unmentioned in this memoir about a creative, sometimes sleazy life that was filled with risk-taking, extreme drug abuse, and excesses of every sort. Kiedis is a bright man with a questioning nature who doesn't try to hide anything he did along the way to where he is today, an unlikely survivor and spiritual pilgrim. Scar Tissue tells about death, crime, fame, music, sex, pain, loss, the celebrated and the infamous, and provides us with the ultimate backstage pass to twenty years of existence within The Red Hot Chili Peppers.

5-0 out of 5 stars Enlightening
I'm sure that there are many musicians/actors who would like to think they had a rough upbringing or caught some tough breaks in life.I have a difficult time imagining that many of their autobiographies can even come close to that of Anthony Kiedis.I was taken aback by the completely honest, naked telling of his life up until a few years ago.Unlike many other musicians, he has managed to maintain a high level of privacy to his love life and addiction. Most people would cherish that image and refuse to open themselves up for the whole world to see/read but Kiedis shares his personal trials and professional triumphs with mutual detail.I didn't want it to end and hope he'll write another one in 10 more years. ... Editorial Review

One doesn't usually think of rock stars as insightful, but, against all odds, glam-trash superstar Marilyn Manson has written a book that is actually an intelligent look at growing up. This autobiographical bildungsroman brings out the creepiest aspects of childhood, conveying the terror and fascination that young Marilyn (then called Brian) felt when looking through his grandfather's pornography, getting his first French kiss, and being taunted by the girls he wanted to "date." Manson has the benefit of having grown up as an outcast and loser and then having become a star without forgetting what he went through. This gives him an incredibly broad perspective, which he brings to bear on his ordinary life in order to convey the more potent and frightening moments that shaped him into the pale-skinned weirdo that the Christian Right loves to hate.Best of all, Manson is shockingly honest, and portrays himself as occasionally stupid, self-centered, over-sensitive, ignoble, and, mostly, highly fallible and human. It's a long way from the auto-hagiographies that other stars have written, and it's easily one of the best reads in celebrity bio. Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars entertaining, yes.substance, no
This book tells some very interesting stories about the crazy life of being in such a popular band and all the usuals that go along with it: groupies, drugs, etc.The thing that annoyed me about this book is Marilyn Manson's belief that society somehow molded him into becoming the person that he is or that he is a product of extreme circumstances (he references always being reminded that he was different). While his childhood was definitely not what most people think of as normal, I got the impression that he is who he is by personal choice and nothing else. This does give a sense of empowerment in the way that it says to people, you can be as different as you want to be without having to have an excuse for it.However, this isn't the message this book tries to deliver; this book claims that it's not about choice it's about cause and effect (at least in my opinion).
5-0 out of 5 stars Marilyn Manson scares me
Well, not so much him as his image.Throughout the entire book I found myself covering many of the pictures and even avoiding viewing the cover.
4-0 out of 5 stars I actually read this in one sitting
It was when I lived in Iowa and was bored one day trying to find books that I wanted to add to my collection, too broke to own this one I decided to sit in the book store and read it from cover to cover just to see what made him tick.

3-0 out of 5 stars Recommended, but With Several Reservations
I have always been a huge fan of Bob Dylan's music, and am now probably a bigger fan than ever. As I listen to his older music, some of it for the first time, and compare it to the tripe from other acts that record companies "manufacture" these days, Dylan's music is a true treasure.
4-0 out of 5 stars Tangled up ...
I had always wondered about the gal on the cover of Dylan's second album, "The Freewheelin' Bob Dylan." I had read elsewhere that she was Dylan's girlfriend soon after arriving in NYC. Reading "Chronicles I," you getDylan's take on Suze Rotolo, the girl on the cover, and her role in his life. Dylan gives you a small sense of her as a love interest, a muse, a girl of the sixties. More importantly, Chronicles offers a jumbled, messy, non-chronological, but insightful view of Dylan's life, the trappings of fame, and his attempts to recoil from expectations by the adoring fans. The chapters detailing his earlier periods seem more interesting probably because of our greater familiarity with the music he released then. I found it useful to have a listen to the album Oh Mercy!while reading the chapter devoted to putting the album together in New Orleans with Daniel Lanois.
5-0 out of 5 stars Can't wait for Bob Dylan's next book (hurry Bob!)
Not many books hold my attention. They sit around my house half unread. Add to that my short attention span and that I don't want to bother reading any fictional words from an unknown somebody's book.I'm old enough to be Bob Dylan's daughter and have never owned one of his albums.Of course I know his music classics that other people have covered over the years...many I didn't know Bob had written until reading this book. I came to this book with an open mind, not a 4 decades follower of Bob Dylan like many of the other reviewers. With that background info in mind......I started Bob Dylan's book Chronicles Volume 1 and could not put it down.It opened a door into the sixties and Folk music era that took place when I was a wee toddler but have always been very curious about. It provides real, personal moments as Bob talks and you sense his enthusiasm or other emotions all intertwined. His words and phrasing bounced my mind around on the page and into different years and descriptions in each sentence.I learned about the music world then, his contacts, friends, desires, wishes, ups/downs, a life event here and there, and I was spellbound by the the visual imagery he succinctly provided thru a few words when telling of places, events, people, his journey and personal moments in his life - one after another.I thought many of his ways/wordings were very salt-of-the-earth "Midwestern" that someone not raised in the Midwest wouldn't recognize or be able to smile about while reading...I should know since I'm from Missouri. I laughed several times. He's funny as well. Bob, please write your next book soon.I'm waiting for it impatiently.Until then, I purchased my first Bob Dylan album and listened last night (Modern Times).Songs 4 and 7 made me cry. The words & images in both his songs and book are intriguing, beautiful, real, unexpected. The tunes can grip the mind. Thanks to Bob Dylan for opening up the door to his life after all these years. He didn't have to and could've just faded away like so many others. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars 850 pages never read so fast
It's a fine testament to Spitz's writing skills that he can take you on an 850 page journey without ever making you feel like the story lags.In fact, when the book ended, I wished it had kept going.I've read a lot about the Beatles, but this book provided an overall context to better understand their rise and their fall.

4-0 out of 5 stars The Whole Story
This is certainly the most comprehensive biography of the Beatles that I have read. Bob Spitz leaves no myth unexamined as we see nightmare of Beatlemania, the tortured life of Brian Epstein and the eventual self destruction of the greatest band in history. It is surprisingly readable although it is often more like a horror story than a rock bio.
4-0 out of 5 stars Comprehensive biography adds to beatlesanthology
Mr. Spitz has done a commendable job overall in this detailed and well annotated publication. Granted there are some errors with the text accompanying the photographs. The authors access to Albert Goldman's original recorded interviews adds depth and detail that would otherwise have been neglected given his controversial 'biography' of John Lennon.

5-0 out of 5 stars ROCK AND ROLL ! THATS ALL IT NEEDS TO BE, PEOPLE! ROCK AND ROLL!

3-0 out of 5 stars Readable, informative, overdone.
Led Zeppelin is either the most over-rated band in rock history, or the least respected great band of all time. You decide. In this book, Led Zep,the ultimate arena band of the '70's is subjected to a prose review that alternates between a sycophant's fawning praise and a reporter's damning crtique. Somewhere in the middle of those extremes a picture emerges of four blues-loving musicians with clashing egos, a lot of talent, and a wild streak that found expression on a canvas of orgies, drinking marathons and obliterated hotel suites. In among details of the bandmembers insatiable lusts for drugs, booze, fast cars and faster women, we are reminded this quartet from the English midlands also gave us Stairway To Heaven,Black Dog, In The Light, No Quarter, and a score of other all-time great recordings. Hammer of the Gods is a fun,no-holds barred read that once in a while comes off as having needed one more round of pre-publication facts-checking, but it's still a spirited road trip with a band sure to be among the titans of rock and roll.

1-0 out of 5 stars Oh dear.
It's from this book that Led Zeppelin's reputation as rock n roll "bad boys" is largely responsible. If you are a teenage boy or have the mentality of a teenage boy, it no doubt illicits great admiration and hero worship and you will enjoy this book. But to anyone else the individual band members simply come across as sh*ts. Even so, I still think they are worthy of a better book than this. Wild on the road behaviour-which is the main contents of this book largely- is really very common place for a band from that era. I just simply can't understand why it's represented as being so unique. When infact, what is really great about Led Zeppelin is their fantastic music. The writer really fails to capture this or what makes the band as individuals tick. Although he can deliver some salcious tales it becomes pretty obvious he knows very little about them. The photographs are pretty uninspired too. I think the real Led Zeppelin story is full of the heights of success and the lows of human tragedy, and various trials and tribulations inbetween which constitutes their real growth as individuals and musicians. But I have quite honestly never seen any writer particularly, let alone this one- tackle this skillfully. Anything very meaningful tends to be brushed over in favour of petty gossip-mainly to impress a certain type of male fan.I still think the definative book about them which is more truly representive of their lives and music has yet to be written. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Ahhh the Arrogance....
Well, it's been a long time since I read this book. Though it left a lasting impression.
1-0 out of 5 stars I guess this doesn't surprise me...
I haven't read this book, therefore, I really don't deserve to comment on the lot of it. However, I had been a HUGE Rush fan throughout the many years that the band were together prior to the 80's. Reading some of the reviews of this book I seem to get a very clear picture of the kind of man that Neil Peart REALLY is, and have therefore nothing but disdain to offer him as a review in return.
5-0 out of 5 stars Motorcycles and emotion
I'm not an avid book reader by any means, but this one I read cover to cover in record time.I was drawn to it by the romantic idea of riding a motorcycle coast to coast and all over, but Neil's emotional situation really added to it the expirience.

5-0 out of 5 stars Ultimate Book TributeTo The King!!!!!!
I have read every Elvis book worth reading out there and by far this book surpasses them all, even though I am not a die hard Joe Esposito fan.
5-0 out of 5 stars Remember Elvis... This Book makes sure we will !
"Remember Elvis",produced by Joe Esposito,Elvis Presley's former body guard, road manager, and best friend is a "must-have" for Elvis fans. This book is primarily based on a 16 hr documentary consisting of interviews with Elvis's former girlfriends, co-stars, movie producers, friends, and others who personally knew him. Sales of this documentary DVD set called "Definitive Elvis" were halted due to allegations of copyright infringements.
5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful read
I could simply not get enough of this book, I was actually sad when I completed reading it. The only thing I wish this book had was more pages so it would never end. This is more than a book and needs to be in everyones collection. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars An intimate peek into the early Stones
The Rolling Stones: In the Beginning by Bent Rej is a marvelous look at the behind the scenes life of the Rolling Stones before they became the band we are so familiar with.As the book tells us, Bent Rej had unprecedented access to the band when they made their first European tour. Many of the photographs come from this trip.

Editorial Review

The art of Nirvana's Kurt Cobain was all about his private life, but written in a code as obscure as T.S. Eliot's. Now Charles Cross has cracked the code in the definitive biography Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars The Courtney sanitized version of events
Cross used Ms. Love as a source and the book is fraught with inconsistencies. Towards the final chapters, things like " kurt being the verbal tactician" while "courtney pleaded with him to get help and then had to be physically helped to the car" (paraphrased) read more like a plea for pity towards poor little courtney.Cross starts off very deeply looking into Cobain's psyche then pulling back and letting 'third party' narration carry the book towards the conclusion.Decent read, good photos.

5-0 out of 5 stars kurt kobain book reveiw
this book is great i love how the author puts so much detail into this book and care of kurt cobains life! i love the storyline and arangement into it and think it is very organized and well put out. i love how he puts quotes into the book from people that have met him because that is what makes a good book and what makes a biography even better than other books out their in this world. i also like how he describes how he feels at times in his life and thing in the book of what he have said. i recomend this book to other fanns of kurts or even the band nirvana or any other people looking for a great book to read but cant find one. trust me this is a good book and you will like it

5-0 out of 5 stars Charles Cross is DA MAN!
Quite simply a riveting and very informative and enlightening book.
